Cycle to work scheme saves you around £1000 pound on the lower tax band making it a lot cheaper. That’s what I did, I now use my power fly 5 to commute to work everyday 24 mile round trip takes me 1 hour 20 mines on emtb mode
@@tooyoungtobeold8756 to be fair you could live anywhere in the UK on the cycle to work scheme, however in the long term a road bike is more suitable as a commuter for me anyway
If it's keeping you active and fit and getting you out to remote places then it can only be good. I'm just a bit younger at 57 and beginning to notice a little hip pain. An Ebike maybe on the cards for me one day too..!
I used to be on my racing bike just about every day of the year, with an average of 60km/day. Than, early 2015, I had a rather heavy accident with my crossmotor and broke my left forearm, elbow, shoulder, three ribs, left thigh bone and knee. The recovery went pretty well and by the summer of 2017 I was “good as new”. However, I was no longer able to ride my racing-bike as the position was hurtful to both my hip and shoulder. So, I put the bike aside and bought a TechnoGym hometrainer, which is an absolute must have if you wanna stay “fit” in times you’re pretty much immobilised. Swimming is ok for 15-20 minutes, that’s it. After a while you get sick of staring to the wall while you’re on that hometrainer, so you start making walks...and that’s ok for a mile or two and than your knee and hip remind you of a certain event you don’t wanna be reminded to. I’m not gonna lie, I was Fucking fed up with it. I became a couch potato and just watched the Tour de France and the Northern Classics on TV. January 1st 2020 my parents gave me an original present, a Trek Powerfly 5 (2019). I took it for a ride that same night, just to see how it felt. And it felt great. No pain in my back or shoulder, the fork suspension is a Godsend, and when I’m going uphill (that’s when I used to suffer terribly in my knee and hip) I got all the torque I need to simply iron the landscape out. I’m 43 now, according to many people way too young for an e-mtb, but I don’t give a flipping fuck about “people” anymore. I’m back on my bike, back in the outdoors, going for nice rides in the weekends with my friends on their classic mtb’s and going to work on my bike every day, which puts an additional 230€/month in my pocket, free of taxes. I should have done this years ago.
Great news Billie. That's a terrific testimony for e-mtbs. Someone shouted at me the other day that I was cheating. I cried back "How am I cheating, I'm not in a competition?" And that's how I see e-mtbs, they allow you to do your own thing. Work hard and sweat if the mood takes you, or just switch on and cruise if you fancy it. I reckon all bikes will be e-bikes in a few years, especially if they can get the price and weight down.
Cameron McNeish Couldn’t agree more. E-bikes are the way forward and when prices and weight are further reduced while the range grows, there’s no stopping them. And in regards to the people that make a competition out of everything I can say this. I was one of those people, I was always in for faster and harder. Wether it was on my racebike, my crossmotor or in my car. And it was also the case when I had my accident. That day I was also trying to go “faster and harder” then the rest, took risks that I shouldn’t have taken (although I had been taking them for years) and payed a hefty price. Now, thinking back at those months I was lying in a hospital bed I can’t recall one single time that I said to myself “I may be completely fucked up but that’s OK, over the years I’ve beaten so many other motor-bikers (in general competitive jackasses like myself) I can be perfectly happy in my current situation”. No...all you can do is thinking back at how stupid you’ve been. You cringe when you think about the many near-accidents you had over the years while racing your bike in roads full of unpredictable traffic, flying down from Alpe d’Huez at 80-90 km/h on a racing bike with classic brakes and super narrow tyres. And you cringe even more when you think about the way you responded to those near-hits...macho behaviour, doing it again and again, pushing it further and further... That’s why I’m glad my parents opted for a 25km/h-limited e-bike. My mom was dead anxious for me riding a fast e-bike, so she insisted on a slow version. And she did me a favour with that...put me on a real fast speed-pedellec and I will probably fall for the temptation to go “a bit faster and a bit harder” 😉
Cracking bike Cameron, looks the biz. I like how the battery slots into the frame and the range would get me to work and back (15 miles). However I'm not quite ready for ebike, but would never rule one out. Cannae wack a bike n' hike in the Highlands. PS. Looking forward to your gig in Musselburgh 👍🏼. Cheers Robin

Hello - I am looking to buy the same model second hand. Looking for advice as I know that the new 2020 CX motor is out and it states it removes the drag seen on the older CX motors. Is the drag a bad experience when you go over the 25KMH speed limit or is it still a good feeling to ride? This is my only concern in buying the bike as i will use it to commute on some nice roads where i will be able to get upto 30mph? Thanks
To be honest I never really notice when I go over the 15MPH speed. I guess because the bike is rolling along quite well at that speed you don't notice the motor switching off. I've never noticed any drag at all. However, it is a heavy bike and I think it would be very difficult to get it up to anything like 30mph, unless you were on a good downhill where the weight of the bike would be an advantage.
Excellent, how easily can you lift it over a style? I've not been out in the Highlands for a while but I seem to remember there are rather a lot of deer-fences around
Not easy Mark. These bikes are heavy. Having said that I more or less stick to tracks and trails where there are gates in the fences so no real issue. The main problem with the weight of these bikes is in transporting them. I use a towbar bike rack which is great but I wouldn't want to lift one on to a car roofrack. My bike is about 50 lbs.
@@CameronMcNeishOutdoors Well I'm a townie from England and have more trouble with anti-motorcycle obstacles than deer-fences, but the principle is similar. My mum has a trike (and disability which makes it impossible to ride a bike or lift the trike) and she finds many trails unpassable
