- What’s the answer to the seemingly never-ending spate of mass shootings in the U.S.? VICE News visits Uvalde, Texas, where an 18-year-old killed 19 students and two teachers at an elementary school to find out what people are saying. And we hear a very different perspective from a survivor of the deadliest mass shooting in Texas history-the 2017 massacre of 26 churchgoers in Sunderland Springs.

I will never understand why you have to be 21 to drink alcohol, But it’s totally acceptable for an 18-year-old to buy a gun.
Because gun Lobbies own the GOP. Republican Party has been neutered for years now
How about an 18 year old joining the army, getting a gun and getting blown into pieces?
I learned why 21.
Because 18 years old would drinking on lunch breaks in school.
Southern states regularly hade held back students and wasn't uncommon for them to graduate at 20.
But what that proves is students couldn't simply go out and buy liquor at 18. It stopped them.
Now Americas unhealthy relationship with binge drinking and the taboos is a different conversation completely.
Maybe the age limit for alcohol should be lowered is the takeaway. America is practically the only country that doesn't allow 18 year olds to drink

I've been saying this a long time. As a Canadian, A LOT of their culture has been bleeding up here in the last 2 decades or so. Most of our gun violence is done with guns from the states. Unfortunately many of our citizens, drown themselves in American news stations all day and have kinda lost their own identities. "brain rott" is the biggest export America has these days, the violence in the media is normalized, guns are indoctrined into them as infants in many cases, it's honestly tragic. Guns are tools. Countries with low rates of gun related violence (such as in parts of East Asia and Europe) implement the following:
1. Require permit/license and age restriction of 21+ for pistol/rifle for hunting/self-defense valid for 5 years, no semiautomatic weapons unless for qualified and credentialed sport shooting athletes valid for 3 years
2. Mandatory gun safety education followed by written exam
3. Mandatory marksmanship proficiency exam (96% accuracy; pass/fail)
4. Mandatory legal and civil liability course + purchase of gun liability insurance
5. Mental health evaluation by qualified provider
6. Criminal background check
7. Interview with local police precinct/station of applicant and family of applicant
8. Declaration of location of gun/ammo safe with lock (firearm and ammunition must be separated)
Exactly. And it works. I'm in the UK and am ex British Army. I have a couple of shotguns and a .22 which I use for small game. I keep my weapons in a locked cabinet and my ammunition in a separate locked case. I have no desire for 'home defence; weapons.
This is 100% common sense. But the Republicans prioritize getting NRA money over the safety of the people they manipulated to vote for them.
It's much more of a mental health and culture issue in North America. But some changes to the gun laws would be a good thing.
1. Agree with age restriction, disagree with semi auto rifles, competitive sporting with semi rifles take a completely different skill set than pistols/shotguns/bolt guns for law-abiding average civilians.
2. 100%
3. Practical safety examination rather than marksmanship, for a beginner with no experience, expecting a 96% marksmanship score is unrealistic unless the targets were large and no more than 5 meters away. Along with safe storage of firearms.
4. 100%
5. Most definitely
6. Expensive policing hours for the sheer population of the states, but could be offset by fees.
7. Disagree for the US, full agreement for Canada. But home invasions are a problem in the US, this could severely impact response times of homeowners who are about to be victimized.
However, many criminals would completely bypass the licensing stage in the US. This could potentially, however, potentially reduce mentally unstable people from acquiring firearms.
It would be a huge help to ban all social media for youth under the age of 19. More time needs to be spent with peers in person, rather than through screens.
Yep people forget we still get guns here in the UK but you need a license. We still have shootings here but the death toll is way less since most of the time it's just a handgun, also no school shooting since 1996 because checks stop them from going to criminals and crazy people.
Well this won’t work here in the states because then people will just buy guns from others that don’t care and just want to sell their guns so if they want to is to stop they have a lot of work to do
As a gun owner, I want to make it clear, there's a huge difference between owning a rifle or two for hunting, owning a pistol for personal security; versus owning an AR-15, or as is more often the case, an arsenal of weapons of war. A good, law-abiding citizen has no problem with getting a license to own a gun, registering that ownership, and passing a safety course to prove you are capable of handling it responsibly. A responsible gun-owner knows first-hand that guns are dangerous tools that demand the utmost supervision and scrutiny. The group of gun advocates who oppose common-sense regulation are the same people who collect and covet weapons of war. Guns designed specifically for killing large numbers of people and nothing else. They all hold one belief in common: opposition to government. Period. I believe they are, by their own words, a threat to society, and a threat to our democratically elected government. They are also directly responsible for America's unique and horrific plague of mass-murders. Whenever I see that bumper-sticker that says something to the effect of "out of my cold, dead hands," I always think: "If that's what it takes, so be it." A safe America, is a sane America; and that will never be one where tools designed specifically for mass murder are available and easily acquired by anybody, anywhere, anytime without any scrutiny of any kind. That is very insanity we are now living in.
Well said. Thank you. Your first sentence especially, is exactly what I've always thought.
well said my man, we need more gun owners who think like you!
Very well said!
But not everyone is like you or thinks like you and that’s the sad thing. :(
The fundamental idea behind the second amendment in this country is having the right to oppose a tyrannical force. Not personal protection or hunting. Though ironically, the AR-15 is such a good platform that many people use it for personal protection, hunting, AND a precaution against a tyrannical force. Millions of AR 15s and other similarly designed rifles have been and still are owned, bought, and sold all across the country for many decades now. Yet these shootings happen extremely rarely compared to the amount of these guns you claim to cause them, and did not happen until the past couple of decades, specifically in the last ten years despite the rifle existing in the early 60's over 60 years ago. Correlation does not imply causation, people are not suddenly shooting up schools in the past ten years because guns have appeared in this time frame. Banning such weapons will not stop the violence.
Please understand that myself and many other gun owners do take safety very seriously. Any sane person is not going to argue against background checks (which we already have) to prevent giving guns to criminals. But not only do these checks not stop the shootings like we see here in the video, but banning specific firearms is a tried and true method of "common sense" gun control, it has not, and never will work. hundreds of guns, magazine types/capacity, moon clips, barrel lengths, optic styles, bump stocks, and many more have been banned in the US, yet crime and mass shootings continue to soar.
Having a proper conversation about what can be done to improve mental, financial, and social situations that plague many of the young men that do these horrible acts might go a long way. Having temporary armed guards and improved screening/metal detectors before entering and other precautions could be a good short term solution until we can address the underlying human issue at hand in these situations.
There are solutions. stricter gun laws against law-abiding citizens is not one of them.
These people are so delusional. “If I had a gun, I would have dealt with the shooter myself!”

DEVESTATION - I am truly sick over this horrific tragedy! I am furious when it is apparent a person in command absolutely failed to perform in the requirements of their position!!
I respectfully request that investigations be conducted thoroughly. Backgrounds must be reviewed to illicit past military experience, training records, and performance records of the scene commander and those 19 LEOs ordered to remain holding a safe static position outside the locked classroom’s doors. Something important may be revealed by such a study.
As a veteran US Marine SNCO, and retired police officer who served in three diverse police agencies including the NYPD’s Tactical Patrol Unit, there is no way I personally could have been capable of following what I would have perceived as such an awfully insane order to not do anything to “stop / terminate” the ongoing murders of captive helpless innocent school children behind a mere lock on a school classroom door!!!
Street cops, (not empty suits) particularly veterans from high crime urban environments, know what must be done to stop and neutralize deadly attacks. Running to engage an armed perp on a gun run job happens very often. All you think about is getting there to protect the others responding and to engage and stop / terminate the violent armed offender!
Having worked in smaller agencies one finds that the apparent potential for displays of procrastination, incompetent reasoning, cowardice and malfeasance are more problematic.
Further, those agencies are more likely to select a SRO for certain attributes which are apparently not indicative of a courageous LEO willing to challenge sudden lethal threats to students. Far too often assignment to a SRO detail was a gift to a particular MOS for the wrong reasons.
The PTSD and future chronic nightmares those at that horrific scene shall certainly sustain will be some measure of punitive consequence indeed.
Nice to see journalism is still around

Vice is owned by oligarch billionaires (HBO). Fox, MSNBC, CNN, and pretty much all mainstream Western mainstream media outlets are owned by millionaires who have an agenda to support the status quo. So they can do journalism but only as long as it doesn't threaten billionaires too much.
I did not expect this video from what I’ve seen recently from Vice.
I think this nails the problem with the problem on mass shootings. By that I mean that the problem is not simply possession of firearms but is The identity individuals in the collective we call America have. The Societal values that are shaping children and specifically that are causing such apathy and pain and anger for young men. America is the only country where this happens. All of the philosophies of capitalism that have shaped our culture must be addressed and criticized because from what I have seen in the news this horrific tragedy was caused by basically a child.
Tell women this in America and they will call you a misogynist sexist evil man. The media doesn't care and social unrest benefits these behemoths of news-based television networks. They will continue to push all men are evil and violent and that all white men are racist. It is how they make money

It's such a hard thing to talk to people about because everyone is emotional, but the solution is not armed guards and metal detectors, nor more background checks. It is investing in our children

My condolence to the victim families. I hope US will soon resolve this matter. U guys shouldn't let this kind of tragedy to continue happening. I have few friends from US, one of them just arrived when the mass shooting happened. We were talking about it and he told us that it happened once at his school. While we were talking, he sounded totally fine, like it was the past, it was no big deal. Suddenly a loud noise from a motorbike (we have a lot of motorbikes in our country) startled him, he almost jumped out of his seat. Honestly seeing his reaction made us feel kinda sad for him and US people. Hope this matter will stop one day.
Here's an interesting fact:
*"Throughout the late 1960s, the militant black nationalist group used their understanding of the finer details of California’s gun laws to underscore their political statements about the subjugation of African-Americans. In 1967, 30 members of the Black Panthers protested on the steps of the California statehouse armed with .357 Magnums, 12-gauge shotguns and .45-caliber pistols and announced, “The time has come for black people to arm themselves.”"*
*"The display so frightened politicians-including California governor Ronald Reagan-that it helped to pass the Mulford Act, a state bill prohibiting the open carry of loaded firearms, along with an addendum prohibiting loaded firearms in the state Capitol. The 1967 bill took California down the path to having some of the strictest gun laws in America and helped jumpstart a surge of national gun control restrictions."*
*“The law was part of a wave of laws that were passed in the late 1960s regulating guns, especially to target African-Americans,” says Adam Winkler, author of Gunfight: The Battle Over the Right to Bear Arms. “Including the Gun Control Act of 1968, which adopted new laws prohibiting certain people from owning guns, providing for beefed up licensing and inspections of gun dealers and restricting the importation of cheap Saturday night specials [pocket pistols] that were popular in some urban communities.”"*
*"In contrast to the NRA’s rigid opposition to gun control in today’s America, the organization fought alongside the government for stricter gun regulations in the 1960s. This was part of an effort to keep guns out of the hands of African-Americans as racial tensions in the nation grew. The NRA felt especially threatened by the Black Panthers, whose well-photographed carrying of weapons in public spaces was entirely legal in the state of California, where they were based."*
Something to think about.... #Ijs 🤷🏻♀️
Both our government & the NRA were more than willing to implement gun control when it was for racist reasons...
Oh & the NRA "adopted" (stole) the "pro-gun" stance from the Black Panthers.
The NRA started with teaching, training & assisting to establish gun laws back in the 30's. 💯

Make it challenging yet legal and fair for law-abiding American citizens to exercise their 2nd amendment right i.e. age restrictions, testing, training, vetting, background checks. Educate our population in order to teach them to honestly respect and appreciate firearms. This gun culture we have is pathetic, cancerous, and dangerous.
Education is the biggest issue at hand here. The culture is poisoned. This kid, and I mean that, kid was 18. 18! What is America teaching their children that at such a young age their already desensitized to violence to the point where they can pull this off. Sure mental health is a factor in many cases, but that leads back to education again. If kids were taught some degree of emotional intelligence and coping skills, they might not fly off the handle and go postal soo much. I agree with your points 100%, restrict the access to the 2nd amendment completely, but there needs to be more. the culture needs to be addressed as well.
Sounds great, just make it nearly impossible for individuals who have the mental capacity to safely handle firearms, while those with a blatant disregard for the law will continue to use firearms in anyway they see fit. Thats right, restriction is the only way to solve this issue, because people will totally listen when theyre told what to do!

more guns only lead to more death. okay - you're a teacher in a school, giving a lesson, maybe leaning over a student's desk to help with an issue, and suddenly you hear the door opening like normal followed by a pop. that's one student dead. you turn around, and in the time it takes for you to turn around, several more are shot. you'll probably feel paralyzing fear and not even remember you have a gun, but let's say you do realise it. in the time it takes to unholster, five more are shot. one of those might be you. if not, as soon as the shooter sees your gun, you're the target. you then need to win a gun battle against someone armed with multiple automatic weapons when all you've got is your pistol, unless of course you've been teaching armed like Rambo. of course many mass shooters wear protective gear, and by the way, how is your aim? not good enough, you're already dead. this old man Clint Eastwood fantasy is a good guy with a gun is stupid and is getting people killed.
