  • As the young survivors of the Florida school shooting keep up their marches and walkouts for gun control, the NRA is pushing back with its own go-to narrative: “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.”
In the aftermath of the Parkland shooting, lots of schools seemed to agree with that approach and moved to put more "good guys" in the classroom. This week, Gianna Toboni sees firsthand how some teachers are taking up arms and explores the deep divisions in America that make stopping these mass shootings seem nearly impossible.

You seem to be an idealist. You want a utopia where no one is evil and no one wants to murder. But you see, even though we all want this, this kind of world would never exist in real life. There will always be bad people as long as there are people. It is human nature. Now we can do things to minimize the chances of mass murder happening, such as addressing the root causes that drive some people to want to commit mass murder in the first place. After all, the rise in mass murders is but one symptom of the increase in mental illness, and our society would be vastly improved with better mental healthcare. But even if we somehow got rid of all insanity, there will still be some evil people who just want to kill. And gun control won’t be much help if that’s what you’re suggesting, as plenty of mass murders have been done without guns and with much higher casualties (OKC bombing, Kyoto arson attack, Daegu subway fire, Kunming knife attack, etc.). All in all, it doesn’t hurt to be prepared for the worst. You can hope for the best, but still be ready for the worst case scenario. Even if there is a one in a billion chance of something bad happening, I would still not take any chances when it comes to safety.

Except this doesn't help your argument as all as this just proves that handguns, the most basic firearm you can own, are incredibly lethal by themselves. Also, assault rifle kills may be relatively low, but they have high involvement in spree killings with high bodycounts (e.g. the Las Vegas shootings).
As an aside, the argument that armed teachers will protect students falls flat when you consider a) de-facto private security goes way beyond the purview of education and teaching contracts, b) there is no practical way to ensure regular training (or compel a teacher to be armed!), c) they're forced between constant carry risking accidents/theft due to negligence or constant storage which defeats the point, d) it compels shooters to actively target teachers, forcing aggression rather than evasion, and thus e) there is no guarantee friendly fire from teachers/law enforcement won't occur due to escalated conflict. And these are just the issues I can think of...

These two groups reached a middle ground by allowing the supreme Court to interpret the Constitution. Throughout history, Constitutional rights have been questioned and most of the time, a middle ground was reached.
However, with another interpretation of your comment. In s situation where someone is say, questioning the authority of the Constitution, a middle ground could still be reached, but I and most Americans would not support budging on the authority of the Constitution.
I believe that there is always a middle ground, but the middle ground that could be reached is necessarily a good thing.

"The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun." The biggest problem with this, is that good and bad is subjective. One group of people think one idea is good, and another group will think it is bad. As the idea gains more followers on each side, eventually we will all have guns, and great belief in our set of ideas. This is a very dangerous combination, when just about everyone can get a gun, because once the shots start popping off from the crazies who have certain ideas, and the other side fires to defend themselves, there can be a cascading series of events. Think about if this happened in a protest. This is the real danger of the laws of public bearing of arms in protests, the vitriol of modern society, and the growing unwavering belief of the different subsets in combination.

It is amazing what someone can do in a life and death situation. Time slows down. This is better than the alternative, especially with the astounding amount of guns already in America. There is a reason the targeted locations for these dispicable acts are most often in locations where law abiding citizens are not allowed to carry. Glad the doctor somewhat explains that it is the ammunition and not just the weapon.

In the cases the doctor is discussing, it's mostly a matter of muzzle velocity. A .223 rifle has about twice the muzzle velocity of a 9mm pistol. High velocity bullets produce very nasty exit wounds, even if they are not designed to expand or fragment. Yes, the composition of the bullet matters, it's an essential part of the equation, but only part of it.

In Canada, there are as much guns per people then in the United States. Yet, the last mass school shooting I’ve heard of happened before I was born. So what's the difference? I'll tell you what's the difference: the type of guns and the mentality around it. The great majority of guns in circulation are hunting rifles, heavy, slow and made for mid-long range. Nearly all assault rifles accumulate dust in collections and museums. Here, a gun isn't considered a extension of a person's freedom, but a tool of *dissuasion* in case of threats or attacks. Also, we rarely see guns in public, so it raises questions when we see one.
Gun control has an indisputable impact on the number of shootings. It's not about banning all guns, it's about restricting the relight type of guns.
