- American women are buying more guns than ever before, mostly to protect themselves. Manisha Krishnan heads to Texas for the annual A Girl and a Gun conference where women are being trained to fend off sexual assaults and home invasions with firearms. She's trying to find out whether gun culture among American women is fuelled by fact, or fear.

A gun is like a fire extinguisher. It's better to have one and not need it, than to need it and not have it.
J. Gona absolutely
A gun is like a fire extinguisher that kills your child.
Because nobody has ever been bludgeoned to death with a round, cylindrical object, like say.. a fire extinguisher, right? Spray some of that fire distinguishing media into your mouth and see how well it goes for you. (By the way, this happens all the the time, and it's usually by kids). The point is, no gun is spontaneously "jumping" into the hands of law-abiding citizens and firing at your family. A gun does what it is DIRECTED to do. Guns don't kill people, people kill people, and accidental deaths account for waaay more cases every year than from firearm deaths.
Your argument is unbelievably pathetic.

I'm speaking from 10 years in law enforcement in Texas. Citizens having guns and being able to protect themselves really makes a positive difference in two ways.
1) Because of the proliferation of carrying guns in Texas it really does reduce the likelihood of guns being used to victimize the populous.
2) Citizens have stopped crimes from completion keeping them there until we arrive and at other times literally defending themselves in their homes.
The problem with the removal of guns from a public safety prospective is that when someone is breaking into your house in the middle of the night and you call 911 with lights and sirens it will take us 10-15 minutes to arrive. That is simply too long when seconds count. Everytime I see people who are victimized it kills me because I can't get there fast enough or they didn't have a way to prevent it or stop it. When citizens take care of themselves it really makes me happy.
I do not believe the thought you are more likely to be killed by your own gun. I have never seen that in my 10 years as a cop.
I do not believe everyone should get a firearm. If you don't like firearms or are nervous you are better off to find another solution and you are free to choose. Why are people determine to remove the choice of defense for people who desire it?
You cannot tell people to be open minded when you yourself are closed minded to other people's beliefs.
THANK YOU!!
1) Evidence doesn't support your first claim. Facts don't support you at all
@@BrandonCorby-wr5nd can you cite credible sources for your statement?
Didn't you guys have a pretty well-known massacre like 2-3 months ago? Umm, you do realize if you're in your house and you can hear someone breaking in a knife is better for CQCB. Except you know when people are breaking into your home its more than likely to steal your tv, which isn't really worth anyone dying over with homeowners insurance? You don't believe people kill themselves with their guns? That seems like a stretch as someone that's been on a police force for 10 years. Only within the last five or so years was the 2nd amendment expanded from its original purpose of being used in a "well-regulated militia" to being construed as being used as a defensive weapon. So if you're arguing I'm closed minded because I stick to the original wording of the constitution then so be it.
@@jacoblee9455 If someone breaks in with a knife and you have a gun it is highly unlikely they will make it close enough for CQB. I would rather see them flee when the gun is presented rather than have to drop them, but someone breaks in your house with a weapon they are asking for trouble. Sadly people do kill themselves with their guns, but they do so much more frequently with their cars. In my whole life guns have been for self defense 36 years btw.
One phrase that I always respond with whenever people ask me if concealed carrying is a necessity is “I’d rather have it and not need it, than need it and both have it.”
It’s about being prepared for the worst possible scenario, and having the tools to deescalate that event or stop the threat if necessary.
I agree, USCCA has videos where they interview gun owners who used them to protect themselves and their families. People don't think about being attacked and having to deal with that.
I can't understand Americans. You massacre children and think it's still okay to carry because one day you might need it, wake up
@@Chill-mm4pn what people don't realise though is that it's not a safety thing, if everyone has as access to one how can it protect you
@@SergyMilitaryRankingsot everyone has one. Not everyone knows if you do. Not everyone has training even if they do have a gun. As many have said, I'd rather have the tools I need, know how to use them, and not need them, than the opposite. If you aren't willing to increase your odds of being safe, who do you think will take care of you?
@@prof113 you don't need Training to use a gun, point and shoot, this isn't a combat situation were things will be at a distance, majority of self defense will be close range, accuracy is meaningless
it's not increasing your odds though, statistics show that the US has far higher gun crime and mass shootings and overall crime in general than majority of developed nations (most gun crime and mass shootings by far) so this idea that guns make society safer is just nonsense.
The solution is the problem, people think we'll criminals have guns so I need to, not realising two things, first it's easy access to guns that give criminals such easy access in the first place as places with strict gun control in Europe have incredibly low gun crime even in organised crime and secondly you're not protecting yourself if the other person has a gun aswell, you're just increasing the chances you both die.
So best things for self defense is strict gun control with maybe a tazer or pepper spray, but the research and statistics is pretty clear, if I was in America I'd be armed purely because the majority of others are, but in Europe I don't need to be, and this is reflected in gun crime statistics, so you can support the second amendment all you like but don't try and say that guns make society safer because they very clearly have the opposite effect..

algierssolja a noble, if not tired & old, sentiment, but a greater concern arises when one considers carrying a cop for their personal protection, besides it being impractical and unrealistic, many if not most cops cannot be trusted and ALL cops, as ALL humans, are fallible, and then there’s the whole issue of outsourcing the responsibility of one’s own personal safety to a third-party, let alone the GOVERNMENT. Think about it.
I’d much rather be responsible for my own safety and carry the appropriate tools for the mission. Cops already do that so why shouldn’t we?
The issue is the culture. NRA appeals to the simplicity of it all.
Go out on a weekend and shoot at a human target.
They don't teach you to read the room, react to actual dangers, etc. They just paint this vivid image in your head that any stressful situation or show of aggression is life or death. It takes weekly training to be able to effectively react to a stressful situation. Something a large number of gun owners won't do, nor is their proper qualified classes for it.
The NRA is just bad for gun owners in general. They overhype ownership and make gun ownership an emotional thing rather than a tool. The day US fixes its gun problem is the day when gun owners actually understand the complexities of self-defense and it's not always drawing for the pistol.
The gun problems in America stem from criminals using guns not over eager people trying to defend themselves.

To me, all of it seems utterly irresponsible. they make it out to seem like having a gun will put you in control of every situation, no matter your level of training, and they hook new members on their sob lines about protecting your family.
The truth is, without that proper training and understanding, you will most likely be shaking in your boots if something ever happens.
I just hate gun culture here in the US. It’s basically a dick measuring contest, instead of being seen as a tool.
I admit it’s fun to shoot, and it’s actually the main reason I purchased one in the first place. But you can’t sell that end all be all protection facade to people who really end up needing proper training as well.

Both me and my dad got spanked when were little, but it is a thing from the past, that doesn't teach kids anything, so that cycle broke when I had my kids - no spanking, just learning and love and it has worked just as good, if not even better.
However... NONE of these things have NOTHING to do with this video. It isn't politicly motivated in any way - it is just REPORTING...

I mean that same person would've killed themselves somehow anyways 🤷♂️ glad they had a tool available which made it quick and painless
Guns are just a tool, and like all tools, they can be replaced. Criminals can use knives bombs cars, swords, rocks, and poison. With the increase in technology and the ability for people to build things at home easily new kinds of weapons can be made unregulated. Rather than focusing on the tools, we should be focusing on the people who did it. But besides crime has been falling for the past decades despite what popular belief is, statistics show a trend that violent crime is falling despite any major gun ban being passed this means guns are not the problem the people are.
I'm a gun owner, and the lady with the swimming pool analogy was correct IMO. I personally believe TRAINING should be the focus of gun legislation (particularly surrounding carry laws); however, if I can legally own a gun, I should be able to do the training and get my carry permit.

You’re more likely to die in a car accident every day then be shot don’t drive
You can’t downplay one problem be displaying another one
The difference being that you need a car but not a gun. In 2019 40 000 people died in car accidents in the us compared to the 15 000 that got shot. In a normal country like france or germany only around 100 people get shot so its easy to avoid these thousands of deaths by applying common sense and ban firearms.
@Kyle Mortensen funny you would say that without even knowing the homicide statistics. In the us there are 5.0 or 5.3 per 100.000 people depending on the source while in france for example it is 1.3 in the uk it is 1.2 in germany it is 0.9 and in norway it is only 0.5. So as you can see the homicide rate of the us is way higher than it is in other developed first world countries. And that mostly because of its loose gun restrictions.
@Kyle Mortensen i dont fear firearms in fact i find them quite intersting and fun but there is a difference between finding something interesting and beeing able to undestand how dangerous it is for a society
Cars are neccesary though. Guns aren't.
Speaking honestly, I understand the concern and can even agree with some points (or at least the motivations) made in gun control movements. The problem is that firearms are already plentiful in the United States, and it's very deeply seeded in our culture. Further restrictions on firearms are more likely to make criminals feel more confident that they are safe when conducting illegal activity than they are to remove guns from the hands of said criminals. Disarming morally conscientious people just makes them a target for those who don't care if they're breaking a collection of laws. This is something I almost never see counter points for, it's always dismissed or the conversation gets redirected when it's brought up.
One could argue that if we start now, in 100 years we might be able to see American society free of guns. Could we really though? With each passing decade it becomes easier and easier to fabricate your own firearms. We're essentially already at the point where 3D printed guns are functional enough to become a concern. I think restricting firearms to the extent that a lot of activists would like to see at this point is just going to create a modern prohibition type of atmosphere in the US.
And to touch on school shootings; I get that they're horrible, this isn't meant to sound insensitive or play down the terrible nature of these events. The problem is that people use these awful events as a way to push agenda. Pushing gun control laws that focus on school shootings would be like pushing laws making windows illegal because kids tend to fall out of them and die. There were something like 8 deaths, and 43 injuries due to school shootings in 2019 (for those interested, something like 12 kids under the age of 12 die from falling out of windows annually.) School shootings are statistically insignificant when it comes to gun crime, and are used as emotional bargaining chips when folks try to push for more firearm restrictions. I would think it would be far more effective to invest in understanding why these people are shooting up schools rather than how.
Frankly it just seems like no one's ever thought of the end game, and all these solutions being proposed are either willfully ignorant or just thoroughly short sighted. No one ever stops to just think these problems through, it's not as easy as just adding restrictions on purchasing and owning a firearm. It's all just one knee jerk reaction after another.
I don't really know what the right thing to do is, this is a complicated discussion that probably doesn't have a good solution, but in the spirit of this Vice reporter's methods I'll end on an anecdote. When I was going to college back in 2010-2015 I remember constantly seeing reports of people being mugged and beaten half to death on college campuses at night. My college had a strict policy against weapons of any kind. It happened literally every few nights. It seems to me that disarming the students was effectively painting a large target on their back, and folks would drive onto campus specifically to assault and steal from the people who are likely to have no way to fight back.
I feel like we shouldn't be focused on the tools of the crime but rather on the people that commit it we don't have a "gun violence epidemic" as many call it but rather a violence epidemic, we must confront the problem at the core most reason people commit a crime is either drugs, poverty, gang, or mental health issues. Banning guns just takes away one tool for the job people can always create a new method or tool that can be just as dangerous. All politicians are doing is feeding the fears of the people to get elected, the truth is violent crime is falling in America despite zero gun ban laws being passed.
Thank you. I feel as you do, but also thanks especially for highlighting a core issue in American politics; which is the fact that people want quick, easy answers on multiple subjects and don't like to challenge themselves to think it through and to try to see all ends of a proposed solution in the long term. We are paying for short term thinking. Ideally I would want guns off the planet, literally no guns, but that's not our reality, as you explained, it's more complicated than that.
Here in the uk we’ve got very strict fire arm laws, which I’ve 2 minds about, I believe we should have personal autonomy in all things we don’t need the state to nanny us, anyway, gun laws work we had one school shooting, amidst fairly tight laws, after that it went even stricter we’re at the point now in scotland where I can’t own an air gun ! Without a firearms certificate... but we have zero gun crime which is good. I envy the amount of wilderness country yous have over there, surely getting rid of guns that aren’t for hunting and having those left stored securely and registered wouldn’t be to much of an infringement.
@@gingerandthetramp what about all the other types of violence and crime that happens in the UK amidst the strict gun regulation? Criminals aren’t just not committing crime because they can’t get guns, taking away one thing just opens up a whole new method of inciting violence against people.
The proof of that is out of control in large violent gun controled cities. So called "gun" violence, which is actually just violence, is like nothing I"d ever thought I would see in my life. Criminals for the most part do not want to get shot, or hurt, they just want to steal from you, whether that is to steal food, money, your personal autonomy, oryour life, it is stealing, and they want easy victims, not those that will kill them.

I don't even know where to start with this. The gun lobby is still quoting the same discredited 500,000 - 2 million DGUs per year and most people who quote it claim that equals 500,000 to 2 million lives saved, which is a massive leap of faith to say the least. More recent and credible research puts the figure much lower. The NCVS, which examines every crime on a case-by-case basis reports around 65,000 per year. Even that does not equate to 65,000 lives saved because we simply don't have enough information to make that judgement..
*_"NRA probably doesn't care to speak anymore or they lied about trying to contact "_*
This is ridiculous. No credible outlet is ever going to do that. The first the NRA would do is call them out on it.
It seems that everyone here has the same problem: you simply can't tolerate balanced reporting. By balanced I mean showing both sides of the story. You regard that as bias, lies, agenda-driven, irresponsible...call it what you will. You only want your side covered. Anyone with a better than room-temperature IQ can see that the reporter here not only approached the gun range but the NRA as well, giving the gun lobby not one but two opportunities to speak. I would say that would have given the gun lobby well over half the air time, granting them a slightly unfair advantage. Journalism is reporting what some people don't want to hear. Everything else is salesmanship (Hearst).
@@thethirdman225 so you consider Vice a credible outlet? Sorry but they lost all credibility a long time ago. You can argue with the numbers but they are still there and they shouldn't be discarded. Idk about the NRA but at some point in time you really just don't have the time to sit with people who just want to turn your words around.
@@thethirdman225 The numbers of defensive gun uses (DGUs) each year is controversial. But one study ordered by the CDC and conducted by The National Academies’ Institute of Medicine and National Research Council reported that, “Defensive use of guns by crime victims is a common occurrence”:
Almost all national survey estimates indicate that defensive gun uses by victims are at least as common as offensive uses by criminals, with estimates of annual uses ranging from about 500,000 to more than 3 million, in the context of about 300,000 violent crimes involving firearms in 2008.
Another study estimates there are 1,029,615 DGUs per year “for self-protection or for the protection of property at home, work, or elsewhere” excluding “military service, police work, or work as a security guard,” (within the range of the National Academies’ paper), yielding an estimate of 162,000 cases per year where someone “almost certainly would have been killed” if they “had not used a gun for protection.”
(In comparison, there were 11,208 homicide deaths by firearm in the US in 2012. There were a total of 33,636 deaths due to “injury by firearms,” of which the majority were suicides, 21,175.)
In short the numbers are still there and they shouldn't be descreditded or disregarded. It should also be noted that many gun violence numbers often include suicide itself. I don't if they don't cover my side by journalism should always stay neutral....im watching this to get a different perspective but when they don't include the other side then how can I possibly consider them credible?
