Being a Black Bull Rider in a Majority White Sport

  • In the heyday of America's Old West, roughly a fourth of the cowboys were black. But today, the world of professional bull riding, a sport rooted in ranching culture, is predominantly white.
On this episode of 'MINORITY REPORTS,' VICE sent Lee Adams to Texas to meet Neil Holmes and Ezekiel Mitchell-two black bull riders at different points in their careers-to find out what it’s like as a person of color trying to make it in the predominantly white world of professional bull riding. Holmes-an accomplished pro on the eve of his retirement-explains how he got into bull riding, and talks about leaving the sport as the only black pro ranked in the top 100 bull riders. Desperately trying to fill Holmes's shoes is Mitchell, who's struggled with the funds to travel, and has experienced racism in the sport first-hand.
We look into why one of the most popular sports in America has so few professional black athletes at its highest levels, and explore some of the barriers to entry that have made black representation difficult in the sport.

Yeah, the western part of the state is different. The culture is very much Hispanic. The Rodeo circuits here are mixed between White, Mexican and Brazilians. The actual cowboying on ranches is mostly Mexicans, or healthy mix from white and Mexican. But you don't see African Americans very often. You'd get looks from both, but just because you dont see it often if not at all. But you'd get encouraged because people want it to grow.

It’s sad when people try to take away from this guys experience. Regardless of how hard you may try to understand, unless you are a black competitor in an all white sport you may never understand his experience-but you CANT invalidate it. When a young boy sees this sport if he is a young black boy seeing a black man ride this bull may be the difference between feeling comfortable entering the sport and not. We need to encourage all people to do historically white sports, we all win when the best of the best competes and young black boys have a role model to look up to in an all white sport.

I'm so glad Ezekiel didn't back down against his peers when they were talking about race. And I wouldn't have blamed him if he had. I've definitely had moments in majority white spaces where I've ultimately decided to end the conversation. It can be absolutely draining to try to have a discussion with someone who does not plan on listening to you. Crazy how the one guy can acknowledge he is not coming from a black perspective, but also deny his own "friend's" experience.
I hope Ezekiel has community that will listen to him and raise him up. Need more people to understand that you don't improve racism by ignoring its presence.
And yes! Everyone in the comments who is saying they don't care about the color of the rider is missing the point. You may not. Doesn't change the fact that many still do.

You don’t have to be black to understand discrimination. There are people in this world that just don’t like “you”, wouldn’t matter what color you are. Is every white person I’ve had conflict with over the years a racist? .. no. The only people that make it about being black are black people. The real, reality is most black folk are good, just like most white folk, asian folk, hispanic folk, etc., etc., are good. The reality is there are just bad people in this world. Cowboys don’t see color only the man. If you don’t believe that, you’ve never met one.

His skin color is important though because as a black guy, a lot of people like him, but some people don’t. I can’t even begin to imagine how that must feel. White privileged guys like me will never know what that’s like, because pretty much everyone loves us, automatically, and if anyone ever doesn’t like us, they always have a really good reason for it. That’s totally different from how it is with black folks, who are only ever disliked because of their skin color alone, and for no other reason. We don’t have to have competitions for white people only, because we’re allowed to participate in any competition that we’re good enough to be in, except for the competitions that are only for black people, of course. Hopefully, one day there will be all-black competitions for every sport. Only then will we know that segregation is truly a thing of the past. Someday, the most qualified person will be hired for a job only after there are no black people available, just the way Dr. King wanted it to be. I have a dream!!

I grew up on the Great Plains and Native American cowboys were known to be among the best cowboys in our area of the country. Not just in the rodeo, but in life. They were well respected for their skills, but I'm sure they dealt with a good portion of racism.
Our hired hand was Native American and his son, Roland, was the only guy my dad would call for help with a horse behavior issue. He was a very talented horse trainer.
Whenever Roland was in a rodeo nearby we'd go to support him. I'll never forget how handsome he was in his white hat. 😍 I had a bit of a crush on him, actually, lol, starting when I was 4 or 5. 😁 I saw him recently at a funeral and we had a good laugh about what a nuisance I was. I told him I wasn't a brat, I was a woman in love. 😂😂

To be a black man or woman in the rodeo circuit is extraordinary to begin with. To be white and in the rodeo circuit is extraordinary. It is a lifestyle, not just something you're passionate about. It's a heart and soul life of tough folks with kind hearts. They're true ladies and gentlemen of yesteryear. To be a black bull rider is not just exceptional but tough enough...tough enough to not care or let any racists attitude keep you from achieving your dreams. When you do you are a shining example for the youth of poverty, inner-city hopelessness, a life of crime, being a part of a family which so many do not have. These are "gangs" of strength, Faith, Hope and amazing examples of the fact that you can do anything you set your heart too and dismiss your skin color. You're right easy for me to say but not impossible to achieve. Ezekiel has incredible talent and heart! He needs sponsorship and you Lee Adams are in the position to help this dream come true and help start healing the brokenness that BLM has created. Everyone out here should see the opportunity to help him reach the goals he has set for himself and the black youth that admires him. Please support him and in doing so we are working on healing this great Nation! All black cowboys are my hero's cuz I know the road is hard...I admire all cowboy's and cowgirls cuz y'all have heart as big as the bull's y'all ride. Keep on keepin' on! God bless!

His dream was to own bulls of his own, he owned 4-5 he had to sell them so he could buy his own land to keep them in. He cried for them and it broke my heart. We have land now, and he's getting more bulls for people to ride them, he has retired from riding them himself because my mom was worried he might not come out alive someday. He has pictures and his equipment:) im happy he got to do it for some time without getting hurt, he loved doing it.

I am Black and was born in SD California. My Mom and Dad were originally from south Texas a lil bit north of Houston. It was a culture shock for me when I met the Black kids in Texas vs California. I always dressed casually. I always wore loose fit jeans and maybe a polo or loose fit shirt and most of the times I got made fun of or picked on because I didn't dress like the other wannabe Black Cowboys and got called a thug or a gangster for dressing differently than them. Most of the Black friends I had growing up in Texas families were big into trail rides, zydeco music, country living and rodeos. For most of my youth I never really fit in growing up in Texas. I'm 37 now and still regret the move back to Texas. I am also retired military. A few years ago I was able to got back to California via the National Training Center. I remember meeting a local white person in Barstow. We talked for a good bit and he told me a joke about the weather and I got it the first time around. Even with going back to California via the NTC, I felt more at home in the middle of the desert for a month than I ever did in 37+ years in Texas. I currently live in central Texas. I like here for the diversity of the the community, but back home it was very lacking. When I graduated from high school, there was 6 Black kids in a whole school of 400. Even my wife who is Black her family is really big into this life style and most of my Aunts, uncles and cousins are even dressed out like Cowboys or Cowgirls at almost ever family reunion. I can recall to this day when my Grandpa was still living he always wore a Cowboy hat when he was 98 years old. This part of Texas is almost a whole different world if you have never been.

So, you prefer to be around people that have similar experiences and interests as you, people that are like you...fortunately you're black, otherwise you'd be known as a 'racist'.
Small hats...controlling the narrative in America for decades. If "they" can't convince you to hate your 'whiteness', then they'll train your children to hate you.
The black man's 'oppression' is a tool of powerful people behind the scenes.
      Take Vice for example...
      Vice Media Group LLC
Founders: Suroosh Alvi, Shane Smith, Gavin McInnes
Headquarters: Montreal, Quebec, Canada (1994-2001), Brooklyn, New York, United States (2001-present)
      CEO: Nancy Dubuc
Owner: Shane Smith (20%), The Walt Disney Company (16%), A&E Networks (20%), TPG Capital (44%), Soros Fund Management (10%)
If you take just a few minutes to look up who the top executives and owners of these companies are (Soros Fund is pretty obvious, Yeah, the same Soros funding BLM riots), you'll quickly realize that there is a common thread, from Google (RUclips) to Facebook, Walt Disney to Vice, the largest advertising agencies to their control of the smallest ones (and if you don't know that advertising plays a huge part in controlling the narrative, then you aren't paying attention)...the levers of power are in the hands of a very small minority of people that are fond of small hats...and hate Christian based White Western society.
... point being, from the CEO to the majority shareholders, there are a lot of small hats controlling the narrative, just as there were during the Civil Rights movement. Vice produced a lot of excellent informative content in its early years, but has since just become part of controlled media.

I don’t necessarily think it’s racist because most black children aren’t even interested in bull riding in the first place. No one is saying that you have to be white to participate in this sport, it’s just very unpopular because very few African Americans grow up with these customs

@@AutoSearPin I guess you missed the part where they said they've faced racism in the sport.
