  • Most of the gun debate tends to focus on firearm production, distribution and consumerism as avenues for intervention. However, on Wednesday July 27th, the Committee on Oversight and Reform, will hold a hearing with the CEOs of gun manufacturers Daniel Defense, LLC, Smith & Wesson Brands, Inc., and Sturm, Ruger & Company, Inc. on their role in gun violence, specifically looking at the sales and marketing of their assault rifles.
There is currently no federal regulation on how guns are advertised, but many advocates for stricter firearm laws believe limiting the marketing of assault weapons could translate to fewer gun-related deaths.

The best marketing tool by far is from politicians promising to restrict or ban them.

I don't know... Electing a person of color to the Whitehouse seems to be the best tool, to me, even if restrictions or bans are never mentioned. Obama was probably the best thing to happen to gun and ammo sales in a long time. While Trump's victory cooled the fear, and sales went down. Although things like, Constitutional Carry, will help keep sales steady, I would say, darker skin in political authority produces the biggest concerns, and thus the biggest surges. However, it would be interesting to see what anomalies, like Hershel Walker, would do to gun sales.

Keep in mind that for most of the 20th century schools in the US not only had shooting clubs as part of school sports, but many schools had firearms training as part of the curriculum. But alas they disappeared, and along with it went societies respect for proper safety, maintenance, and usage of a firearm. School shootings are a relatively new phenomenon that never really happened back then.

I see the whole Remington settlement is continuing to be misused by people who don't realize the nuances of that case.
First off Remington did not settle anything because Remington is currently at defunct company. The insurance agency that represented Remington settled, they settled because they found it financially cheaper to subtle instead of fighting a lawsuit for a company that no longer exists (in fact one would question how you could properly represent a company that doesn't exist).
Second the plaintiffs had to shop for the proper Court to even find somebody who would take their lawsuit seriously.
Third in the lawsuit they highlight ads that related gun ownership to manhood, they called it toxic masculinity.
However the facts of the case don't back their theory.
The Sandy Hook shooter never saw these ads and decided to go purchase a firearm.
Sandy Hook shooter killed his mother and stole her firearms.
The in the lawsuit they never even try to prove the shooter saw these ads and it ignores the fact that if these ads contributed to the purchase of the weapons it was the mother who sold the ads and was influenced.
It's all really ironic because a lot of the people who are anti-gun seem to correlate with the people who say 'oh we need to remove money from politics the special interests have too much influence.'
But this lawsuit was funded by special interest groups, meaning that a lot of people are hypocrites.

I’ve been shooting since I was 15, 11 if you count a BB gun. I own many firearms and have never once bought one because of an add. My first gun I got new was a single shot 12 gauge and I still have it. I own a lever action rifle, bolt action rifle, ar15 a2 clone, a muzzle loader rifle, and quite a few handguns. I own them because I enjoy shooting and I enjoy different actions. The reason ar15s are used so much in shootings is because when you walk into a gun store it’s the most common rifle on the rack. A ruger mini 14 is practically the same gun but isn’t used, it’s also not scary looking. I can’t tell you how advertising effects gun owners because it didn’t affect me. I disagree with the thought that kids shouldn’t use firearms because many of us learn when we are kids, of course it should be under adult supervision at all times. I had guns at 15 but they weren’t under my control, it’s mine in that I shot it, I cleaned it but it was at my grandfather’s house, my parents are actually a little anti gun. Kids should learn to shoot under the supervision of their parents, personally I think they should learn a manual action firearm before a semiautomatic, and of course the firearms should be kept under the adults control. I feel some of the motivation is to stop a new generation from getting into firearms so that guns can in the future be taken away. The reason gun banns were supported in other countries is because most of the people weren’t into them, most didn’t even own guns and were afraid of them. If you can keep the younger generation from getting into firearms the 2nd amendment would be easy to repeal. Kids already can’t buy guns legally and rightfully so, the advertisements aimed at kids are really aimed at the kids parents.

This is hilarious- I'm on the wrong side of 50 years. Been around firearms & law enforcement as long as I can remember. Grandpa was lifelong NRA. Only place I've ever seen ads for firearms is in enthusiast magazines. Hunting, competitive shooting, even as olympic sports- the only people promoting violence with firearms is Hollywood, and much later, video game industry. Anyone connected to the NRA or the FPC only supports responsible ownership. Also, more people are beaten to death than shot dead with AR15 rifles every year according to the FBI. Also, something like 95% of guns used in crimes are possessed illegally. The majority of gun crime is also gang related and the majority of both victims & perps are minorities. Somebody please explain how limiting my rights as a law abiding person will convince criminals to follow our laws, please? Truly a one sided presentation.

The easiest way to advertise is to have the weapon included in a modern war shooter like Call of Duty or Battlefield. I'm very certain that kids probably saw modern guns in those games before they saw any social media advertisements. Then it becomes a matter of keeping people who are dangerous from getting those weapons, because that's really where our problem lies, keeping guns out of the hands of irresponsible or dangerous users. But as for marketing, video games are the easiest market because you can use them in a virtual environment where no one gets hurt.
