  • After the deadly mass-shooting at an elementary school in the town of Uvalde, the United States remains divided over the “right to bear arms”. For some, it is a fundamental right - for others, a fundamental evil.
The mass-shooting at Robb Elementary School shook the small town of Uvalde, Texas. It left twenty-one people dead, most of them children. As the first of the victims are laid to rest, political divisions are once again emerging across the US. On the one hand, there is a wave of solidarity with the victims' families, coupled with calls for stricter and more effective gun safety laws. On the other hand, there are the staunch defenders of an unrestricted right to bear arms. They believe it is people, not weapons, that cause such tragedies, and they use this argument to block any reform. Examples of these two irreconcilable points of view can even be found in Uvalde itself, just days after the tragic massacre. A report by Carolina Chimoy.

Uvalde didn't have good guys with guns that day. I'm all for an age debate, mental health red flags, etc. And where the Federal government fails, the individual states can establish their own laws. But, that police force down there needs to be taken to task as well. "Good guys?"

@C K so what you are saying is that semi auto weapons arent guns?
And what's with Iceland? Not that Icelend is comparable with the US in any way but they have in fact very regulated gun laws.
Also I would admit, that mental health and especially its treatment would be also a big factor, true. Problem is, the same political groups who are defending liberal gun laws usually are against universal health care etc. So what's your point?

But ok thats just another big US Problem...
I just said that guns are big part of the problem and you replied that then mass shootings would be way more common when full auto where still legal, so you are implying that NO full auto weapons are not guns, otherwise your reply doesnt make any sence.
You rly should check your facts about iceland. 1. Iceland has like an eighth of the population density of the US 2. its a small isolated island with no foreign borders, 3. there is universal healthcare in iceland, 4. it has the fewest poor people in the world 5. it has like half the overall crime rate of the US 6. it still has less guns per capita compaired to the US but most important it has strict gun regulations! You cant just go in a store and buy a gun as you would in some US states. Before you have to take lectures, you have to go through a mental health check, you have to tell the police some kind of reason to own a gun, like hunting or for sports (self defence is not a valid awnser here), there will be a detailed criminal background check and you have to take some kind of final practice session at a shooting range. Ah yeah, and oc they have a national database to track every owned gun.
So no, Iceland is in NOW WAY comparable to the US.

I understand the historical precendent, the way the right to own guns speaks to the heart of American liberalism. I understand the argument behind "guns don't kill people, people kill people" and why people may feel that the only way out of a situation like this is to own guns for self-defense, since " criminals get guns illegally anyway" .But I feel that having guns enables and encourages violence, it's a lot easier and faster to kill with guns than it is with knives or other weapons.. and most of the guns used in mass shootings are probably bought legally anyway, given how easy it is to get hold of them. I feel like nothing is going to change because of the gun lobby, though.

I agree to a certain extent that guns enourage violence at least to immature people. I have gotten into road rage incidents wherein the thought of just ending it with a gun seems like a sweet option. Where does maturity come into the picture, the instant realization that it would be better to say sorry even if you were right and hurts my pride. The realization that a fistfight might end in a free trip to jail and shooing someone gives probably will give you an extended prison hotel accomodation. In fact, when Project Exile was introduced a few decades ago with cooperation from Tim Kaine and the NRA, over 80% of convicted felons who are caught with a firearm have charged dropped. If anyone can explain to me why we want to make more laws and never enforce them is beyond me. Believe me, when I lived on Fort Berthold, there is a good reason why on the Rez almost everyone owned a firearm because of 7 Mile Bloods (can anyone explain why BLACK gang members from Detroit are dealing Fentanyl to Native Americans), Mexican drug cartels and other black drug gangs from Chicago, Twin Cities and Milwaukee. If the far left wing job prosecutors would do their jobs and throw gang members in jail where they belong, we wouldn't have a bunch gun toting thugs running around the Rez killing NDNs with their drugs and guns!!!! A huge part of the problem isn't necessarily firearms per se. Instead the root of the problem is American fascination with (gun) VIOLENCE. Everyone that points directly to Guns as the problem is missing the "first cause" in the chain of violence. The fact of the matter is violence is not only spread as a disease, but it's also tolerated as a huge part of American culture. It's become "normalized" and few people want to accept the responsibility for the culture that breeds violence. All a person needs it do is survey the top grossing movies and TV shows over the past 10-20 yrs (or more) an it becomes so apparent only fools could miss the evidence that violence generates profit. Fifty years ago, when America was more "civil" in its favorite forms of entertainment TV and moves, even when there was gun use, there was little to no bloodshed and the "good" guys always won. Comedy and healthy relationships was just as important if not more important than violence. Civility was an important undercurrent in public life and more often portrayed in entertainment. Not so much anymore because the entertainment industry came to realize there was an untapped "dark side" of human nature and why not seek profit from it? So since the 1970s violence has become a big part of American entertainment. Nowadays, one can find a litany of "grossness" in archives of American entertainment from the past few decades. I did an informal survey on violence in entertainment and school shootings since the 1960s. Some will claim "correlation doesn't necessarily mean causation." It also doesn't mean there isn't any direct causation either. My informal survey shows that for every decade from the 1960s as the quantity of violence in American entertainment grew, actual school shootings have largely doubled every decade since the 60's. It's just more easy and less guilt ridden to point fingers at other seemingly more obvious causes. I suspect until American values change and the things people spend their money on, little will happen to effect violence other than making a small impact by curtailing the sale of firearms to law abiding citizens.

One has to ask. With all the problems needing to be solved in this country, inflation, food shortages, high rent, wages, open border issues, China, Russia, coming great recession, and etc. why is this administration spending sooooo much time on going after gun owners, when there are so many other causes of death in this country that dwarf gun deaths, or threats. Especially when you take suicide out of the picture which counts for many deaths. Any one wants to die, just take fentinol. Don't have to blow your brains out. This country's protests, and gun attention is extremely focused in the wrong direction. If we don't take care of the economic problems about ready to plague this country under Biden's administration, suicides will double. Not because of guns, but because of your economic welfare, and standard of living. This administration has half destroyed this country in the first two years of Biden's administration, and will destroy the other half in his last two years of his presidency. The attention to gun ownership is a diversion of the public away from the real problems about to engulf this nation. Why is not our government going after the Cartel that is killing 80,000 - 100,000 our people every year? A thousand more times than mass shooters are killing.

No one needs that much ammo to defend themselves nor for hunting unless they're plotting to use it against the masses, not even your brother-in-law. The result is parents trying to become "best friends" with their kids and this will never work.
Setting down rules and discipline doesn't make you the bad guy. It's your job and responsibility. Instilling pride, integrity, honor, self respect and respect for others starts at home. Without these attributes, your kids grow up thinking the world owes them something and if they don't get what they want, the result is anger, rage, and criminal behavior .

I wish Americans could see the autopsy pictures of what the body of a small child looks like after getting shot by an AR-15. Missing limbs. Exposed organs and part of the skull blown away exposing brain matter. Precious young children have their lives ended in such a violent way.
