Brake Upgrade ~ How To Install a Big Brake Kit
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 12 мар 2019
- Installing a big brake kit can be an easy brake upgrade. In this video I will show you how to install a big brake kit, bleed the new calipers, and flush the brake fluid. This is a front big brake kit using Wilwood calipers, pads, and rotors. Also we are installing new brake lines for our kit. I will also be testing this big brake kit to see how they perform.

I hope you guys enjoy this video. I have had these brakes for well over a year, so it's awesome to finally get them on the GTI! Next up we need to do the rears
Excellent presentation! I NEED that brake flush tool. Going to order it now. Do they make this with different couplers? I'm assuming this is the cap for the master cylinder reservoir. Thanks!
I like yours simple videos
More videos of the mk3! Makes me want to wrench on mine!!!!
Was there any changing or upgrading the master cylinder for the larger brakes. Looking for a brake upgrade atm as mine are severely undersized for the power i am currently at and cant find any details on larger brakes and master cylinders
@@jhuntosgarage Ey good ta see ya. :)
for some reason I got a bit of a ChrisFix vibe from this video lol, great demonstration
Lol I’ll take it. 😂
needs some medium strength thread locker
No soapy wooder needed.
Mikej1592 facts!! I had to look back to see who I was watching lol
LOL 💯💯
Oh my! I just watched an 22 minutes video about breaks swapping... didn't even noticed! I love your channel, man. Thanks.
That’s awesome. ❤️❤️❤️
“Brakes”.
Very happy I watched this video. I learned alot and without it, I would of made some mistakes. Now I understand why the kit came in with many washers and shims of all sizes.
Big ups to momentum motorparts! Those guys do a crap tonne of R&D to make sure the kits fit their application perfectly, while still giving the best braking performance available
This video slipped through the cracks on my feed. Keep the GTI videos coming. It was the project that you were working on when I first started following your channel.
Love your videos! My first car was a 01 Passat sadly warped heads sent it to the grave but you are my favorite mechanic RUclipsr to watch right now keep up the good work!
Another great video Charles. One additional step I would always recommend is to use a dial test indicator to check that runout is within tolerance when installing new rotors. If it's not, and you know you cleaned the mating surfaces well, simply rotating the rotor round to the next stud hole can improve the readings obtained.
That’s a really good idea. And you can get them for like $30. Lol. I don’t think most people will do that, but I love the idea of reclocking the rotor
HumbleMechanic I’ve actually seen some rotor manufacturers that will ask for the DTI readings taken when fitting if you make a warranty claim.
Great video Charles thanks a bunch for all your hard work
What a great video man, you really covered everything! Thank you very much!
Thank you
Great video! It's (almost) given me the confidence to do my own big-brake mod to my S5 .....
This is a useful video, people don't realize how dirty brake fluid gets over the years because of their water absorbtion properties, in sweden they actually started to look at your brake fluid aswell during the yearly safety check
This gentleman is a natural teacher. He would make an awesome lecturer !
Nice & clean VR6, I hope one day have mine like yours.
Greetings from Guatemala.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for making sure to talk about bedding in the pads. NO ONE, I mean NO ONE around me, even the places you pay to do your brakes, bed in the pads. How do you know? Look at the mileage when you get back in the vehicle. If there’s only 1-2 miles more than when you dropped it off, they did NOT bed in the pads. I have cooked too many brand new rotors because of not bedding them in; sometimes glazing the pads in the process.. BUT, this extra attention means I have stopped in an emergency stop when I would not have been able to before, because I took the proper time to heat cycle and bed in the brakes.
Also, as I was teaching a teen to replace his brakes, I told him, “If we test out the system, now, and something is wrong, or something breaks, we can fix it. Plus, we find out in a controlled environment, and not in an emergency situation.”
As a follow up - today I escaped with only some paint scrapes, instead of a complete fender ad bumper destruction because my brakes - properly bedded - were working perfectly when someone turned right into me.
BED. YOUR. BRAKES. IN. PEOPLE.
You teach teens? About bedding in?
Oh look, a mechanic wearing gloves, hmmmm... Living vicariously through you and your videos Charles. Cheers.
😂😂😂😂😂
This is a really well made video. Thank you!
Dude great instruction and video quality
Amazing video write up! Thank you!
Awesome video, Charles! Great detail and explanation.
Great to see, brakes being addressed means the GTI close to being done and making a summer appearance in NC mountains.....
I still have a bunch to sort, and I’m not 100% confident in the car. But soon. Soon!!!
Now, this is one proper video!
Thanks and hope to see one in the near future.
I'd like to see me vids of the build, launches, aggressive driving, & then some more launches.
Youd be the best person to buy a car from.
Damn bro that was one of the best and most thorough instruction videos I have ever seen. Very well done.
Awesome. Thank you so much
Honestly I am not a very tech savvy however I always buy brakes from geobrakes.com
And they sell on really cheap price but thr quality is good
Awesome as always ⚡️⚡️⚡️
Your best bang for your buck for a BBK for Gen7 GTI is the Stock GTI PP rotors with Porsche Macan/Audi Q5 3.0 4 piston bembo calipers. Direct bolt on and very cheap, you can get the calipers for around $250 each. I had to get custom length SS brake lines made but those cost $60. Awesome stopping power.
Nice job Charles. I'll say it again, the Fat Fives look great on the Mk3!
Thanks! They are some of my fav wheels!
For mk3 brakes you can try geobrakes.com they sell all oem brakes
Install some dust caps on the bleeders. Good video!
Hey Charles, I recently replaced my brake pads on my Alcon six pot front brakes, the front right outer pad was completely worn, to the metal. The inner had about 3-4mm, and the pads on the left caliper were 4-5mm. Watching your video I taught that the front right caliper wasn't aligned properly to the rotor, and that is what caused the pad to wear down uneavenly. I was told that when a car is always driven driver only, the front right caliper always brakes harder especially when ABS comes up. What do you think?
that brake flush tool is pretty awesome
It really is. For $60 or whatever it costs, it’s well worth it!
Doing this over the 4th of July weekend. Wish me luck!.
You got this!
Some people may say new rims but installing big brakes is like having the wife strutting around in high heels and nail polish 👠💅💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘
The adventures of Javier 86 idk but like me my car won’t be going to be having much power upgrades cause there limited and so I went with just wheels :P
Rolando B doesn’t matter. Stopping faster never hurts
Great info thanks!
i am seriously contemplating just driving in with some money and letting u refresh my car after this winter. it definitely needs a brake kit
Hey Charles. Love the vids. Can you recommend a good aftermarket break package for my MK4 GTI VR6. Thanks man!
Very good! How do the brakes feel compared to the stock ones you took out?
Charles you are awesome!
Hello - My '09 Tiguan has rear bias brakes. The strange thing about this setup is that VW kept the traditional rotor sizing in place (large on front, smaller on rear). My rear brakes wear A LOT faster vs front because of the OEM rear bias. Is there a good recommended REAR brake upgrade to increase size of ROTOR and possibly extend life of pads?
Well explained, Im wondering what suspension you've got in there? My guess would be ST by the looks of it, but I could be wrong with that.
Thanks! The coil overs are from NGP. I think that ST may have built them for NGP
Hey , i have a jetta mark 2 that id like to put in a VR6 moter in with a turbo . what is the best braking braking system to in stall for this ?
Charles! thank you for all the videos and tutorials over the past 3 years. You are amazing. I really learned much watching the big brake upgrade video. Charles, I am confused to the whole Offset quandary. So, offset I understand is the distance from center wheel to the wheel hub. Now having ADD and never finishing my mechanical engineering degree program at Texas Tech, I cannot fully grasp determining the proper offset. So, I do want to purchase the Wilwood brake kit, but I want to purchase 18 inch x 10 wheels before. How do I determine the proper offset? I just struggle with this. Mike
I'm sorry. I forgot to tell you my car is a Mark 4 1.8T. (2003). thanks
Nice video buddy
great video...
Haha. I can see that You've finally added zip tie on that rubber bracket for the brake hose. I would do most of the job without that fluid change, it drives me nuts ;)
Expertly done!!!!
Thanks!
Great vid Humble. Any tips for removing front caliper pistons for rebuild? Everything I've read says either compressed air or grease gun. Some event suggest bicycle tyre pump. What would the issue be with pumping it out via brake pedal? Use a piece of wood opposite it if it shoots out? Other than mess of course.
You sound like Chrisfix !! Thanks for the video mate
Hey guys!!! 😂 Chris is a buddy of mine
Can you get big kits like this for any vehicle I got a 2001 Mitsubishi montero sport xls with bigger wheel and like to upgrade my brakes system
Does anyone know of a good break upgrade for the B7 Passat? The factory breaks are under powered for extended use on mountain roads. I drive from central Ohio to customers in PA and NC on a regular basis.
Dave J upgrade your breaks to brakes 😂
German TÜV says "NO"^^ - cool video, thumb up & abo
Ich habe 2016 meinen Derby in die USA importiert. Seitdem baue ich all die schönen Dinge ein, zu denen der TÜV eher nein sagt :P
Great vid man I miss my mk3 GTI
For mk3 brakes you can try geobrakes.com they sell all oem brakes
Honestly, you sound like the guy from "Jack Box Party Pack" game series! Cheers for the video.
How do you keep the suspension and brake components for rusting on an old car?
wow these two black screws look pretty tiny compared to the mounting screws! They have to withstand all the braking forces!
I wish you were my local mechanic
I have a 1999 GMC Yukon Denali i been having trouble finding the correct brake and rotors it seems like it was up grated to a 6 piston caliper with 2 piece rotor and the spindles don’t look stock either what kind of vehicle will it fit if it was up grated?
It's a good job
If you want to do away with the turkey baster, fit a short tube on the bottom of the bleeder tool reservoir cap. It will leave a pocket of air inside the reservoir and leave a perfect level.
That’s a great idea!
A little question: does the bigger brake disc haver bigger hub outer diameter? Does it affect anything?
Is VR6 AAA open deck or semi closed deck? I have AAA VR6 as a project and i was thinking can the Block handle 350horses with forged internals? I know the head is biggest problem But that one i have covered already
hello how liquid ptfe do you have? thanks
Hi Charles, could you please explain why bigger brake rotors increase braking performance?
Was it just me or did I hear the orchestra "hit" every time Charles showed us the brake clean?
some nice tips along the way, but steel lines in the front and not a complet set front and rear???
regards
Sören
Can someone tell me is it a good idea to weld bracket? Or just use the nuts? Thx
I like big breaks and I cannot lie!
HAHAHAHHAHAHA!!!!!!!
It is not that big.
I have seen some good rotors at geobrakes.com not sure what kind of you want but they have got some good selection of heavy duty drilled and slotted ones
Just recently bought the same pressure bleeder, ran out of brake fluid in the bleeder as I was bleeding the clutch. Sucked air into the system. Do you know why this happens, even if there is brake fluid left in the reservoir? And why doesn't this happen inside the bleeder aswell?
Got it to work with some more brake fluid, but this behavior is very strange to me..
Third, good info, thanks
How does those Willwood break get fluid to the other side of the calipter? Shuldn't it be a tube between those pistons. from one block to other blok whit pistons.
Really enjoy your videos Charles! Quick question on the bleeder from DAP. Does it include or are there other adapters available to fit other vehicles?
it's just the one for VW/Audi. You can easily retrofit to any car. Swing by the junk yard and grab a brake fluid cap, drill a hole, and put a fitting on it.
Would like to know if you have worked on electronic parking brakes and if so will you be doing a video on work how to do .
Worked on plenty. That’s a great idea for a video
YES!!!!! The "German Torque Spec" Guten-Tight
Hahahha 😜
What are those type of discs/rotors called? The ones that are not made from a single piece.
Everyone talks about upgrading brakes on Golf GTI and R, but how about a Golf TDI 4motion? will this nice brakes fit on that? or can i put GTI brakes on my TDI? The original brakes is a sad sight.
What are your plans for the rear?
The two bolts that hold the caliper to the adapter plate, couldn’t you flip them and have the heads facing inward? That way you can torque them with the rotor and everything on?
take ur time
Cut hex heads like that usually mean left-hand threads though, right?
Nice dish glove ya got there.
I don’t know if I’m brain dead or what, but I can’t seem to find any information online about doing a big brake kit on all four corners of a GTI. Got any advice?
My 2012 GTI still has the original factory brakes. It’s a manual trans 196k miles. Clutch is original also.
Nice
What's the minimum offset and wheel diameter that can be used with this kit without using wheel spacers?
Hello. Im going to buy this kit but i need to be sure if this kit is can fit to my car. My wheels are 5.114.3 is it can be fit to my car ? (sorry for my bad english)
I read the Wilwoods don't have dust boots on the pistons, is that a concern at all? I was looking at a Wilwood kit for my R32.
I think you’re right. I’ve never seen issues with it. I guess it may require more attention than OEM brakes
I would think the biggest thing is to definitely clean them before ever pushing them back in and changing pads. Easy to rebuild too though I'm sure.
@@802Garage top loading calipers are super easy.
no ceramic greas on piston side?
Awesome video. I really appreciate all of the detailed explanation.
Curious: Are the pads on a brand new car bedded in at the factory?
If not, should we do so when buying a new car?
If not, then why do OEM pads on a brand new car not require bedding in?
Thanks again!
That is a great question that I don't know the answer to. Let me ask around. :)
@@HumbleMechanic You the driver bed the brakes in around 100 miles.
Do you not need grease on those?
Unless the rear brakes are drums, the rear factory discs are perfectly fine, even in light-duty racing situations. I'd definitely suggest a performance brake pad upgrade though.
Spending +$1000 on rear disc brakes upgrades provides very little return on performance. You'd be better off spending that money on other upgrades (ECM, tires, suspension, etc).
However, front brakes (which provide well over 75% of the braking of the vehicle) should DEFINITELY be upgraded if there are any significant engine power upgrades. That goes without saying.
Great video as always HumbleMechanic - thanks!
& Weight Reduction :) I almost never leave my spare tire & kit in the car, easy 50lbs weight savings, better breaking, & mileage.
Yep. I’ll be doing new calipers(OEM mk4) and lines on the rear. I have rotors ready to go. My plan was to start with OEM pads and see how she does. Then move to something more aggressive if needed.
So many people do BBK and never see the benefits other than looks. That’s cool with me. But HP pads and proper tires are a better use of the money
Looking forward to that video Charles! BTW - my buddies MK4 Jetta TDI just rolled over 500,000 KM. They're awesome platforms!
Hell yea!!!!!
Any chance you can share were you go your intake manifold? Trying to find one for my vr6 with 6 injector holes and only finding one that has 12 injector holes.
It was custom. The guy was a flake and it took 6mo longer than expected. I wish I could recommend him. But I can’t
@@HumbleMechanic all good just trying to find one thats not gonna break my bank and can hold up to some boost. I appreciate the quick response, love your videos!!
Hey guys hope someone can answer my question!! If you are installing big brakes to a non big brake car will you need to replace all the brake lines along with the master and booster? Thank you in advance
how can i know if a kit of big brakes will match in my car?
Hey Charles, would these same calipers fit on a Golf R mk7/S3 8V? Looking at something like this for my S3. Cheers mate
These exact ones I doubt it. But they prob make some that do
Any thing we need to do for abs? Do we need to command the solenoids to cycle? Just bought a 2012 sportwagen tdi, and want to flush the brakes and clutch. Thanks.
As long as you don’t let it bleed all the fluid out, you’re fine. No need to bleed the module.
Thanks appreciate it. Would love some more tdi stuff. Especially something on buying a buyback car.
Charles, wow. Very well explained and detailed video!! I really enjoyed on how you explained on aftermarket kit and centering it etc. I learned tons of information!! Very helpful in case I do aftermarket kit for clients. Many many thumbs up from me :)
When the need comes time to replace the wilwood brake pad do have to use wilwood brand again?
There may be other brands that fit. But I’m guessing your choice will be limited. I really haven’t looked into it
How do you choose a master cylinder? I'm going to run a 6piston 18zl calipers on the front and 4 pot in the rear of my gti and can't figure out the bore size of the master cylinder. Great video Charles keep up the great work
I ran the stock one. I wonder if you could swap the Touareg master for your setup
Isnt it advisable to empty to brake reservoir to get as much as possible of the old fluid out of the system without pushing it all the way through? Also, shouldnt you start at the farthest caliper and continue by going to the next farthest and so on?
What are the wheel requirements to fit these things? are 15" fine or are 16" necessary?
I used to when I was in garage doing bleed every day. But we had proper sucker.
Hey i had a question my friend got a vw gti mk5 and his hood wont close all the way it latches but wont close what can we do fix it thanks like your videos
You can adjust the latch and see if that helps. Probably pull it up a little?
@@HumbleMechanic how would you adjust it ?
How are you liking these? Thinking of maybe upgrading to these since they also have a kit that fit the mk6/mk7
Im not sure if it caused, or exposed an issue with brake bias. But on hard stop rear brakes lock. Prop valve is built into the ABS module so it may be an ABS issue. I also found after digging the rear wheel speed sensors were not transferred over. Makes me thing I have exposed an issue with the car more than caused one.
