  • Transgender Pakistanis: The Open Secret | Real Stories
    Flamboyant, colourful and eccentric, many among Pakistan's marginalised transgender community scrape a living through dancing, singing and begging on the streets of the country’s economic capital, Karachi. Many others, though, earn money catering for the sexual needs of local men in the city's seedier districts.
    Investigating a never-before-seen side of life in Pakistan, this film from Oscar and EMMY award-winning director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy follows the stories of three transgender people, who each represent a different way of life in the country. Maggie is a prostitute who dreams of becoming an air hostess, while Chahat was abandoned by her middle-class family to beg on the streets. Sana is Karachi's most sought-after transgender dancer, desperate to give up the profession after a particularly gruesome gang rape. Is there any hope for these courageous individuals who want to stand out on their own?
    With exclusive access, this cutting-edge film goes behind the scenes of the transgender community to uncover the truth behind Pakistan’s Open Secret.
    Official Selection, United Nations Association Film Festival

    My mum has taught me from a very young age to respect them. Ever since I can remember, if any trans would come up to us to beg, my mum would not only give them some cash but also strike up a conversation with them. Talk to them, ask if they have had breakfast/ lunch. After some years, they used to come up to mum to say hello and not beg.
    Bottom line: Respect all living beings ❤️

That is really something heart wrenching......They wanted to have kids but they get removed their reproductive organs for a desire of being a female ..if someone wants to be a cat it doesn't mean he/she goes against nature and does this things. True story: a transgender who I'm not sure was male or just a female dressed up but when my mother was pregnant with me, she went on a rickshaw 🛺. In the middle of the rickshaw driving, she fell right on the street. Before anything could happen, that trans person saved me and my mother's life. She still visits Johar Chowrangi! May Allah bless her! I wish I could repay her but can't visit Pakistan at the moment.

Finding a way to follow-up with them at this point would likely prove difficult to impossible, but it would be incredible to locate them. What I honestly don't understand is that to have their sexual identity they accept a life as a guru's slave, as prostitutes that are heavily abused or as outcasts without partners or family. If this is what was in store for me, I would probably forego my sexual identity and live "in the cupboard" as this would bring me more joy and happiness in life - job, family, children, respect... (even though it would not be right or just). I have a job where I have to fake being someone I am not for 10 hours a day and also after work in my private life, but this is how life goes if you want to make a living and be part of society that isnt open to people even just living a different lifestyle or having a more liberal mindset, so I accept that and pay the price of not being able to be myself and truly authentic.

    For anyone wondering, Pakistan passed a series of new legislations in 2018 and 2019 which gave transgenders the right to get ID cards with X gender, Passports with X gender, separate quotas for them in Universities and Government Jobs. They also contest in elections now. Big hospitals have trasngender wards too. Yesterday Pakistan's first transgender doctor graduated. Now Pakistan also has Transgender lawyers, anchors and they are also getting into other professions.

      @Ray Hernandez You do realize that trans people have been using bathrooms corresponding to their identity for years without issue, right? The only reason people like you are thinking about it now and making ignorant assumptions is because the LGBT community is in the social spotlight more than ever before. If that weren't the case, you would have no idea that transgender people regularly use bathrooms corresponding to their identity and it wouldn't be a problem for you, just like it shouldn't be a problem regardless if you know about it or not because guess what? The vast majority of trans people are not "sick". They're just people like the rest of us.

    • @ssy1412
      @ssy1412 11 месяцев назад

      These people do not have gender dysphoria. These people are born with both genitals and do not have the means to properly choose one gender or the other to live a life they want. They aren’t praying to be the opposite sec. They were hoping to be one complete one so the society they are in would not throw them out and give them rights or opportunity to live a decent life and living. Pakistan has a habit of misusing the word trans. These people aren’t born a biological boy having self doubt and thinking they should have been a girl. Or vice versa.

    • @seer1623
      @seer1623 11 месяцев назад

      They are not women; they were born biologically male. You cannot change your chromosomes with surgery. Cutting off body parts won't make you menstruate or have the capacity to give birth. Doesn't mean they should be denied human rights, like anyone else part of the human race. They should not be persecuted, but treated lovingly.

It's the practice which was introduced by my father himself and it's still continued by me and my family members. 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.
      3 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?
      4 How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye?
      5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
      Hi there Ross Moli you see I am not here to judge this person (Chahat),you have to see and understand what this person lacks and needs. Which is obviously love that she should have received from her family if she has no other choice but this to survive and make money then like I said I am no one to judge because I have my own flaws we are all born sinners no one is perfect, If this person was taught of Heavenly Father and the ways and the love that Heavenly Father is greater than any love on this Earth then maybe it would have been a whole different situation. To judge someone you have to be perfect. So before judging anyone how about we show them love and teach them of the TRUTH.

      That is exactly what this is. They try to skirt around it calling it a "custom" acting like they're doing a good thing for the girls. In reality they're just operating human trafficking rings in plain sight, keeping the girls as slaves and indentured servants and profiting off of their hard work.
      Pimps operate the exact same way.. They promise the girls that they're going to be taken care of, protected, that they can have anything they want, lots of pretty new clothes, drugs, money, filet mignon, etc.. But once the girls are under their control the pimp stops treating them like princesses and starts forcing them to work all day and night. The girls are constantly abused, and have to make more and more money, because they "owe" their pimp. If the girls get sick or if they can't make enough money they beaten and starved, raped, sold off to another pimp, even killed.
      The gurus use all the same tactics, it's the same game with a different name. The saddest part is that this appears to be an acceptable practice and the authorities are not interfering. And, almost as bad and equally disturbing, it appears that there are people in the comments who are genuinely defending this inhumane practice. That actually view it as an innocent cultural custom that westerners cannot possibly understand, SMH.

      So sad :( what a beautiful person. Life is so unfair for so many people. It makes me so angry that here in Australia we have tons of people who get to live for free in a decent home with electricity and water and get money for doing absolutely nothing, which many of them just spend on drugs and alcohol - and in Pakistan all of these people are suffering so much just to try and be who they feel they are. So saaad

    My heart breaks for Chahat; she seems so gentle and kind, and just wants to love and care for someone. She has a motherly heart and no one to share it with.
    Of course people complain about them being street workers, yet refuse to give them any way to get out of such a situation. Hypocrites. Just want to find someone to point a finger at other than themselves. They dont give a damn.
    They're forced to raise themselves, harassed and abused. Of fucking course theyre loud and abrasive and put up an intimidating front. Of course they laugh and taunt back when insulted. You leave them with no choice but to be that or they will be hurt worse.
    Nasty bigots in the comment section here too, go figure. Watched a whole video and your empty heads couldnt grasp a single thing of value. You couldnt even feel sympathy for the suffering of fellow humans, just because you dont understand their identity. Because you refuse to understand it, truth be told. Of all the misery in the world, you give such a rats ass about another individuals gender identity and how they present it when it literally has nothing to do with you and I PROMISE does not actually affect you like you think it does.
