"no debt"...except for the actual debt, of course..
Wait, you mean, HELOC's (plural), credit cards (plural) and car leases (plural) are considered debt? I had no idea......
So, no other debt....Dave should have known, by the tone of her voice, she has undiagnosed debt disorder. The 200k her husband will get, she wanted Dave to tell her to do what? Put it into buying more duplexes to rent?
You know she's got mortgages on those rental properties besides the HELOC too, they just never got around to it.

“I have $20,000 in student loan debt, but now that I’ve graduated, and it was like, really hard, I think I’ve earned a little gift. Thinking a cheap little $3,000-$4,000 trip to Europe.”
“But you got yourself a gift already! 20,000 of debt!”
“...........yeah........” (We can actually hear his head sink)
Right! 😂😂😂
Its scripted to keep Ramsey relevant
This person is so confused, she does not need your advice because she will not follow it.
She reminds me that other caller from a couple of days ago who said she doesn't want to give up entertainment spending even though she is in debt. She spent her time replying to the comments in that other video to justify her spending habits after speaking to Dave. Neither of these two women understand how serious it is to have debts.

She has a paid for house.
@@jpmonin7429 having a paid for house doesn't mean she isn't in a mess right now when it comes to money. Especially if she doesn't count leased cars and credit cards as debt.
She actually called in bragging like she's so financially stable blind to the fact that she's in a bad position!
mdooms76 How was she in a bad position? Her assets and cashflow were clearly both well above debt and outgoings.
Nah I don't think she is in that bad of a situation, but if she keeps it up with her mindset she will be. It's troubling that she doesn't even register the car payments as money down the drain. It's not that odd that their leasing cars considering that they own their own business, what I find odd is why they feel the need to lease both of their vehicles. Unless their using both vehicles for the business this doesn't make much sense to me.
She and huzzy are the Ken and Barbie types Dave spoke of years ago.

Even worse, they're not car loans. They're leases. After she pays the debt on the cars, she doesn't even get to keep them.
Credit cards aren't debt if they're paid off on time. If there's no interest, it's not debt.
@@halkon4412 if you owe someone money, you're in debt. 🙄
@@SarahOpossum And if the balance is paid off, who do you owe money to?
I can see her rationale as it really depends on definition of debt. Car lease is more of a liability as by the end of it you don’t have anything. Credit cards can almost be considered delayed expenses if paid in full every month. Helocs are 100% debt though she looks at it as investment expense.

It continues to shock me how many people don't know what debt is🤦♂️
Its crazy the lack of understanding people have about debt. My cousin asked me why I didnt just get a new car and make a payment (i drive an ‘07 vw that like any other car needs routine maintenance and the occasional repair), told her I didnt want to be in debt with a car payment. “But its not debt, youre just paying it off” 🤦🏽♀️ thats debt honey
I guess some people only see it as debt if they're behind on payments
This also highlights people's misunderstanding of what rent is. Rent is the equivalent type of debt but with nothing to show for it after a few years.
Well it seems like she was using credit cards for the benefits and making sure to pay them off before any interest hits. And the car is literally 4% of their monthly income on "bad years". Its not the big of a deal honestly. She should've bought a car instead of leasing it though.
@@DiscoFang not really
jen s Yes it is, somewhat. Debt is putting yourself into a cycle of having to pay for something and never getting ahead enough to be out of that cycle. Which is what rent is.

"You're having a love affair with debt". Dave hit the nail on the head once again.
My FIL followed Dave’s advice to the letter, he drove beaters, saved, invested, lived in a very modest home, and was really wealthy with zero debt on the day he retired. Two weeks after he retired he was diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer and was gone three months later. Be smart with your money, work hard, but live life because there may be no tomorrow . Cars are not stupid, credit cards are not stupid, just live within your means and enjoy life. Having crushing debt can take over your life, but budgeting 24/7 is just as stressful,
Well that's not really the Ramsey way once debt free your friend could have bought a nicer car cash or nicer house. Agree you want to be debt free but not be so tight you never enjoy some things. Now who knows...some people dont care about having a nice car or bigger home and get enjoyment from simple things like the outdoors.
Exception to the rule. Exceptions don't make for good rules.
Caller: “So i have no debt”
Dave: “okay what’s your question”
Caller: “so here’s all this debt i have”
This woman is not the brightest.
Guaranteed the second HELOC for "other things", $60K, was a consolidation of their consumer spending....along with how she paid the occasional $5K credit card monthly balance.
I agree.
It's odd though no acknowledgement was made of the fact the actual positive equity they have in the 4 homes. It should also be noted that since the loan is not on their home the interest is tax deductible from the rental income.
Thinking something is good to have bc it's tax deductible is a fallacy. For example, if your interest is 10,000 dollars and is tax deductible your roughly saving 2500 in taxes... If you didn't have that deduction you would have $7,500 dollars extra to save or spend elsewhere, don't spend $10,000 just to save $2,500!
jeffa3232 Reducing the concept down to being about tax deductions is the fallacy. The concept is that a rental house gives a good return on the investment - cashflow. That return is taxable. A tax deduction is a cherry and increases return. To use your figures: $10,000 in interest would be a 5% mortgage on $200,000 borrowed. If you get $2,500 of that back, the effective rate is 3.75% ($7,500 on $200,000).
Borrowing at 3.75% to buy property that can return anything from 7-14% is not stupid. She had 3 rentals on a total of $100K borrowing which is also not stupid (at 5% that's only $5K PA interest). A 10year mort at 5% is $1061 per month. 20yr is $660pm. At normal Yield rates, even after maintenance & costs the rents would pay the $100K off in no time all with no further cash input.
The tax deduction is a cherry that pays off the investment even faster and safer.
@@jeffa3232 You're so right. This is exactly what Mr Ramsey has been trying to get his listeners to understand. Equity means nothing if you owe on what's providing it. In fact, try carrying the equity to the store to pay for stuff and see what happens.
I'm like Dave Ramsey I hate payments. Ever since I paid off my mortgage and car payments I do everything in my power to pay cash for everything moving forward
Awesome man! I hear you. I've never known what a car payment is and I'll have the morgage payoff amount in a year, maybe less. Debt free is the way to be.
I prefer to use a credit card that gives me 2.5% cash back and pay the balance off in full each month. Doesn’t make sense to use cash unless you are getting a better deal or simply can’t manage a credit card
@@ben02f12 I also use credit cards and get points. I pay them off every month
Dont have any debt.. proceeds to say that she has 110,000 dollars of debt
Right!🤦🏻♀️
You're good with the calculations, my head started spinning when she started listing it all.
Not just 110,000 in debt. We never found out just how much she owed on those cars. 300 a month for one car is likely a 30,000 dollar car. If they are both 30,000 dollar cars, that's another 60,000 in debt. So she's probably running about 170,000 in debt.
@@Jadeskorpion When you have a lease you down owe the total of the care just the lease amount, if it was $300 a month what would be owed is $300 times the term of the lease (usually 36 months)

A regular lease you are taking a loan to pay for the usage of the car..so sure I agree it's debt.

She has two helocs that's it.. credit cards are paid in full.. which means she can use debit but then wont get free money with the points. This was horrible advise. And she leases a car with set payment nothing she can do there till lease is up
Niko G
A lease is debt and u can get out of them. My wife was leasing a 2018 traverse and we just got rid of it a year and a half early. Get a lease then go check ur credit report. The balance of your DEBT will be on that report.
And putting money on CCs is also debt. She supposedly pays that debt off each month, but she has debt if those cards have a balance.
@@MansterBear nothing wrong with that actually builds your creidit score. The lease is a debt on credit. But what we are saying is that you are in a contract.. Yes you can pay fees and return a lease early but that's a bigger mistake. Just wait till it's over. It's like renting a car
Niko G
There's no fees. You just have to pay off the lease (debt), which u will probably be upside down on. We were $4,000 upside down so we paid the difference.
If we would have just finished the lease up normal, we would have paid $15,000 then had to turn the car back in. Instead, we got out of the lease and are now buying a car that we will have paid off before the lease would have ended if we would have kept it. Way better off this way.
Surprise! Car lease and credit card are actually debt!
Having a CC is not having debt, carrying a balance from month to month perpetually is a debt. For a business to lease a car is an ongoing business expense, not a personal car loan, if you are good at using tax code to drive leased vehicles inexpensively then why miscategorize it. The HELOCs are also business accounts that can help owners manage and buffer their cash flow and expenses. I think this lady called the wrong person for financial advice.
If she has a Heloc used for business, it is personally guaranteed. It’s debt. Leases are tax advantageous for sure, but buying a business vehicle for cash is always better. If the business goes under, they will take her personal assets. It’s personally guaranteed debt, don’t kid your self.
@@donwurbadit yes but it's guaranteed using the investment property as collateral. I agree it would be better position to have a contingency fund (like condo owners are required to have a reserve fund) but neither way has any bearing on her current net wealth or ability to grow it (unless interest rates were much higher)
After watching a few of these RUclips videos it’s the same people asking the same question in different ways and Dave just says the same thing every time
I'd pay off the HELOCs, trade in the two cars and buy in cash two different cars. The rest of the money I'd put in a high interest savings account.

What about accountability? How about with some callers make arrangements to call them quarterly back for 1 yr to check if following the advice and if need to update the advice.
Fantastic idea !
What are advice for anyone determining if they're a debt free. If you owe anybody money and it's not your mortgage company or a utility company you are not debt free
I think Dave is wrong here. She pays off her credit cards every month in full. That is not debt. It sounds like they lease the cars through the business, so they are a business expense. Once again that is not debt. I don’t see a problem here
Elite Clinical Research I think you’re right about the cars being leased as a business expense, and paying off the credit cards in full is certainly not the typical problem callers have. But Dave is arguing from his point of view that ALL debt is bad. For one, he believes credit cards are evil, and probably that the begotten rewards are immoral (someone pays for your points). He also has stated in other calls that he built his business without debt. He hates all debt equally. Again, not disagreeing with you; I’m just clarifying the issue from Dave’s point of view.
Adam Winnett respect! That makes sense. But he kind of jumped to conclusions on this one that I don’t think were accurate with this particular caller. Your correct most don’t do all this.
The Helocs are concerning. That likely means they've gotten themselves into trouble with debt before. It does sound like they rent out those two properties, so the rent covers the Heloc. While the cars are a business expense, it would be much better to own a couple of nicer used cars. The problem is they have a lot of debt that would come crashing down if there is a major change in their incomes. The credit cards in full are arguably fine if she is budgeting for everything she swipes for every month.
I don't necessarily agree with everything Dave says but callers like this must be incredibly frustrating to deal with. Also, there's a definite correlation between callers who ramble on and people who are not in control of their money.
Pretty wild that she thinks they are rich and successful while in reality are broke living in a house of cards. I bet she has no idea what the potential consequences of these HELOCs, given they are almost always adjustable rate.
Turns out, when you take away all my debt, I’m debt free as well.

If I charge a 100 bucks a month on a credit card for gas and pay it off every month (no interest ) , what is the big deal?
Honestly, if you only use it on gas, it probably isn't a bad thing at all. But MOST people with credit cards will unknowingly buy more than they otherwise would with cash, and their points/rewards/miles don't make up for the extra money spent. Dave HAS to be consistent and give the advice that will work best for the largest number of people. Otherwise, you budge an inch, and people will rationalize their way into financial ruin.
SmoothJK very true. Dave has figured it out. When it’s comes to money people aren logical. They are emotional. Credit card companies make a ton of profit on the interest from people not paying it off in full each month. That’s also why they lend you more than you can handle so you will use it and owe them.
@@SmoothJK Exactly, it's a small percentage of the population who can truly have a credit card that they pay off every month and create a budget to use. A lot of people become very tempted to charge something that they don't have the money for right then and therefore, they just shouldn't have the option in their wallet.
