Joined Marine Corps 1972 San Diego "HOLLYWOOD MARINE", I enlisted at age 17 during the Vet Nam coflict Boot Camp has sure changed and those that where in the Corps in the 60's and 70's know what I"am talking about.
These videos would be more realistic if they showed the recruits falling asleep in classes and then everyone getting taken outside by the drill instructors and getting smoked.
Tim Nelson Well, for the time frame, it would also be more realistic to see a few recruits get an elbow to the gut, a butt stock to the breast plate, or maybe just a good old slap on the grape once in a while...
Tim Nelson Really?!! Not so much as a shove once in a while?... Damn, for the time frame you served in and from what I've heard from some other Army guys, I would have thought so. Hell, I went to MCRD San Diego from March through June of 2001 and I had all of the above. I was even literally punched in the mouth once. Of course, the company I was assigned to in boot camp was known for it's history of being particularly tough. At least at that time. I say this not in bragging, btw. Just would have thought that since you graduated a few years prior to myself, maybe you would have been able to relate to, at least, some similar experiences. Especially, since I've talked to a few guys who served in the Army during that time and they claimed that that was a tough time to be in Army basic training. I really appreciate your feedback though and thanks for your service.
@@southwestxnorthwest lmao, I went through parris island in 2006, and I got choked out by my own clean laundry because I said thank you when my di handed it back to me. I got my head bounced off a concrete pillar in the bay simply because I stood next to it while on line. I got throat chopped by a clipboard on more than one occasion. I got stomped by the senior in the sand pit for picking our guide on back up after he threw it on the deck. I got shoved by a new di and almost got in a fist fight with him before I realized he was a di. I was forced to do push ups while chewing on a pine cone and having dirt kicked in my face for not sounding off 1 time because I was coughing. Lmao, good times
@ThePhantommet I started Marine Corps bootcamp in PI on August 8th 1995. Wow it was so long ago! Goodluck, it will be extremely difficult, but just take it one chow at a time. The first month is the hardest, but by then you will adjust. Make sure you are in great shape, cause it is very physical from day one. Just don't quit. It is one of the hardest things you will ever do, but also one of the most rewarding. Becoming a Marine is an honor not many will ever achieve. Semper Fi. Ooh Rah!
The last couple miles of the hump were the worst. All of your adrenaline from the Reaper is gone and the beach is covered in wet sand. We were the first platoon up the Reaper and we ran, however we were the last platoon across the beach. For those who haven't been down this path keep in mind this isn't a Sunday stroll in the park, this is a fast paced march that is one step from a jog. Semper Fi Dawgs! 1st BN C co 1097 3-11-94
I went into boot camp in Oct '83 at MCRD, San Diego, Platoon 2110. I still have my GI surfboard! HaHa! I finally had enough after Desert Storm and left in April '92. How I miss those days and regret leaving. I just wanted to let you know that your comment was a good one. Semper Fi!
Am loving this doco...and especially around 9:30 where the Recruits are on the beach and the part of the Marine song '...to the shores of Tripoli' was playing
That is usually "tear gas" and is used for a marine (who must pass through it every year) to build up a mindset of what the worst could be, and how they react. "will they be scared? Or will they stay calm?" Learned that at Parris Island :D our NJROTC unit went their 3 days ago for a week.
I don't remember that much hair on anyone's head during the 2nd phase. Was buzzed the day before going out to the field. Day (or 2) after finishing the reaper, we all got haircuts and much to our surprise, we're left a little up top
Woah, Major Dad is narrorating. You get a thumbs up for it. Since they are using the M16A2 and the old style cheek filter mask (not the M40), this must be early to mid 90's. Great video, brings back memories.
@MARKK300691 I heard you man. It doesn't matter if your Army, Air Force, Marines or Navy. You joined up to do one thing, and that's to serve your country, and make the world a better place. But, what I seen, the Marines have the most in tense training there next to Army Rangers School. I'm in the National Guard, and I thought that Army basic training was tough, but it was tame compare to the Marines basic
LOL..Corn beef hash was aweful..I think you could use that as rat bait..if the rats would eat it...How about that chalky brown block they put in there..Didn't know if I should eat it or save it as a last resort weapon if the enemy overran our position..
damn..i wish we wouldve gotten 1 hour to shower, shave, visit, write letters and read mail when i went to bootcamp.... must be nice. lol. Different strokes for different folks i guess.
@glynamus Was this in boot? We did the reaper, then did the microwave and alpha shelf at SOI. Thought mt motherfucker was for recon, interested to know how the hikes changed though.
I'm hesitating if I'm going to college or joined the Marine as soon as possible but we can't afford for my college it is so damn expensive I'm the only but I decided to join this year.
@ThatNoobSomber you and me both bro. its best to get it out of the way. i was told to go august 8th of this year. but i fought for june. and now im leaving june 13th for camp pendleton
wow how bootcamp training has changed! i went back in august 2010! totally different! mcrd looks diff and camp pendleton is way diff. Semper Fi Marines! HMM-262, 1st MAW Okinawa, Japan!
I honestly believe, no don't get me wrong, i'm no recriut, i tried to join, but my hearing kept me from joining. Now personally, the M16 is by far the most easy rifle to shoot accurately especially on rapid fire. (Trained by the local sheriff department.)
@kings2254 when i went thru in 1988,, the training was still the same as shown above,, ur right boot camp is not really like this,, u need to experience first hand, like i did, that was shock and awe plt 3023 kilo co 1988/1992
@xmike8259x its more of a competition thing. Although Hiking in Camp pendleton aka san diego is far more difficult then doing Hikes in paris island. A lot of people talk shit on east coast marines because of the easier hiking they had to do
love those 2nd phase memories. M16A2! My Senior had to snap in as he was just an E-5. we paid for that via Island hopping campaign. ha! My PMI was always a positive force. tried to get everyone to relax with his stupid "knock knock" jokes.
@deathrattlers i believe that , 10 miles uphill with 50+ lbs of gear on wearing a helmet next to the ocean in some dry as mother fuckin heat, THT IS A BITCH
lolz, I watched some boot camp vids and the, I beleive they are called D.I.s were not really yelling or anything. Then you watch this and they ar ein your face

I'm leaving on the 5th and excited, depending on your age and/or time served you can still join up.

bootcamp back then had what we call MCT combined with it. We never shot SAW's in bootcamp, but learned all that shit in MCT.

Man I loved those early 90's MREs.

Nothing wrong with not being infantry man. Were there to support you so you can do your job and get it done.
Am loving this doco...and especially around 9:30 where the Recruits are on the beach and the part of the Marine song '...to the shores of Tripoli' was playing
The marine corps hymn
In 87, we called were recruits no rank until graduation, everything starts with sir and ended with sir or get the beat down by the DI.
test1 during inspection they use rank
Great videos, Chesty.
former SGT, USMC
graduated 4/17/81, Platoon 2001
Still always remember the days.
Phase 3, one hr free time every night. We had 10 minutes of free time and you had to clean your equipment and your rifle and bayonet. (1960)

I leave for Paris island in September I'm quite nerves but I know I can do it
Well howd you make out?
I don't remember that much hair on anyone's head during the 2nd phase. Was buzzed the day before going out to the field. Day (or 2) after finishing the reaper, we all got haircuts and much to our surprise, we're left a little up top
Marine officers were namely tough on recruits.
Wow, we didnt get to shoot anything in boot but the m16. Had to wait until ITB to shoot the AT-4, m249 and the m203.
Yep when I turn 18 definitely going to join the marines
Sir, Hollywood Marines, sir!

You have no idea how bad I wish I could get waived in for peanut allergy and asthma.
I’m sure some of this was lightened up for tv purposes.
@ 3:46- Ham and Chicken Loaf was the worse MRE...lol..
iGameFun No way. Omelette with ham. Just opening the package & the smell was enough to gag.
LOL..Corn beef hash was aweful..I think you could use that as rat bait..if the rats would eat it...How about that chalky brown block they put in there..Didn't know if I should eat it or save it as a last resort weapon if the enemy overran our position..
Sounds like that was the oatmeal bar.

@kill3rcr3w
It's not the Marine Corps that decided to change that its a little thing called "Mothers of America".
@kingewan Most are IEDs, and 4000 over 10 years isn't that bad of a track record in comparison to the past.
It's voluntary and gives you an opportunity to get away.
wtf we never fired shit like that when we got to Edson Range (1st BN, B Co, Plt 1021, yr 2011)...lucky bastards
Jayy Cee they do that stuff at MCT now
Yeah...this was actually around my time. I went to boot camp in 98, and we never fired stuff like that. All in MCT.
You must be thinking of wingnuts. I'm prior Army and I like this.
Shipping out to San Diego for basic next January, my mom wants me to join the navy instead, fuck that.
Jan. 4th , 2011. Ill be doing this. cant wait *seriously*
@glynamus Was this in boot? We did the reaper, then did the microwave and alpha shelf at SOI. Thought mt motherfucker was for recon, interested to know how the hikes changed though.

The19paul68 did you join?
@avafan344 Second phase and Crucible week are at Edson Range
0:25... the gun checking in boot camp is what I'm afraid of... I'm afraid I'll mess up
Was this video made before the crucible was introduced to bootcamp?
Man I should've joined the marines instead, this looks like a hell of a lot of fun.
Gunnery sgt martinez is my mcjrotc marine instructure but is a sgt mj now.
Is the Pith Helmet the instructor is wearing at 6:13 standard Marine headwear or is he taking some licence?
loved when he said: INCOMIINNGGGG
They did?! That was my favorite!
@ThatNoobSomber you and me both bro. its best to get it out of the way. i was told to go august 8th of this year. but i fought for june. and now im leaving june 13th for camp pendleton

@Church104 o shit bro. i got MCRD parris island the same day. u goin to paris island or san diego?

@ e4dannan, I was thinking the same thing. In 86 we clawed up it at night, what's this day time crap?!
I honestly believe, no don't get me wrong, i'm no recriut, i tried to join, but my hearing kept me from joining. Now personally, the M16 is by far the most easy rifle to shoot accurately especially on rapid fire. (Trained by the local sheriff department.)

Thank BF3 for at least 5% of the knowledge about using weapons lol Shoot ahead, Aim high, and aim small, miss small.

@Chestysayswatchdis was one of the last inf. to go to s.o.i. and i agree
@frostinhel Nice I have to wait until 2013 which sucks so bad. All I want to do is be a Marine
02:52 forgot to close that ejection port cover~
When did they start calling it "The Grim Reaper"? When I was there in 87 it was Mount Motherfucker and Bitch Ridge.
@ArminTheGman yes you can enter the marines but you have to be a legal immigrant and non-citizens can not become officers or warrant officers.
1:53 i didnt know John Travolta was a marine
Marines:
It's about your country and the man next to you
@XvictorX0 You do get paid but not untill you are out of boot.
@Ghosthead32 eye dominance. sucks for you if you're alternate dominance with eyes and hands
@demonofthefall101 where is the part where they kick you're ass for being disrespectful
it was a single marine.
NOT THE WHOLE DAMN CORPS.
August 8th 2011! Last day of being a civilian as i shall ever know it
@usmc030092 haha i thought you were talking about May cause that's when I leave.
What does he mean when he says "Not everyone makes it through first phase"? Are they kicked out?
@deathrattlers i believe that , 10 miles uphill with 50+ lbs of gear on wearing a helmet next to the ocean in some dry as mother fuckin heat, THT IS A BITCH
@Chestysayswatchdis i hated the reaper although ive done worse hikes. reaper just felt like it never ended haha
It’s called Boot Camp. Basic Training is what the Air Force does. Basic Combat Training is what the Army does.
Yes you do...be sure to address it to "Sgt. Maj. (his last name)", He'll thank you for it!
