His name was Thuo, he was from Eastern Africa (Kenya or Uganda, can't remember) and he never really stopped bouncing when saying aye-aye sir and also never really ever screamed like our drill instructors wanted. Dude was chill as fuck all through bootcamp and went on to become a combat engineer.
My son went to boot camp and he felt the same way when they got up in his fa e and yeeled he tried not to laugh he thought it was funny. I always looked at the yelling as a bullying effect. But its not the case. When you go to parris island and see the action up close and personal its very overwhelming in a good way.

That resulted in me getting thrashed 4 times before lunch a day...Good thing was i got strong really quick and the pit wasnt shit...i used to play with it and mess up on purpose to start count over.....until 2nd phase where they broke my azz
It's good that you always look somebody right in the eyes when you talk to them! It's normally a sign that your not lying and being honest!! But a Drill Instructor it's the opposite! Head and eyes and face, body straight forward the entire time!!
Drill Instructor at 2:06 had to have been holding back laughter and thinking to himself, "fuck me is this really my life right now?" while at the same time trying to stay in character 😄😄
+Mike V. Rios excuse me sir I notice you were in this video if I don't mind asking what the name of that gunnery sergeant the senior drill instructor name. the one giving commands?
You’ll get yelled at when you do something wrong. You’ll get yelled at when you do something right! It’s nothing personal, it’s their job. They tear you down, but if you give it your all, they’ll build you back up a stronger and better person. Once you understand that, it’s easier to make it through. No it’s not for everyone. But there’s been plenty of people who thought they’d never be able to make it, yet they wind up graduating and are now Marines
I went to boot camp May 20th but in 2007. Longest 13 weeks of my life. It get's a hell of a lot worse than this video with no let up the entire time. Good luck to you.
I've watched a lot of these. At age 41, it makes me wish I enlisted. While I'm doing great in life now, at 18, I was a wreck. This would had turned me into a man sooner, instead of my 30s. God bless the marines.
I feel the same way. I work in a county and alot of the inmates THINK I was a marine. So they actually listen and do what they’re told. But my dad and uncles were all in the Marines. I’ve never even came close to being in any type of military.
There was one in every platoon. In my platoon is last name was Dapoma. He had a habit of slobbering and keeping his mouth open. The Drill Instructor would be in his office and without seeing him, holler "close your mouth Dapoma". Hilarious!!!!
I just found this video series today. I never thought id have the "pleasure" of revisiting such an incredibly pivotal moment in my life, as this was the day I stepped onto the yellow footprints (im barely visible across all the clips from this day, but im in the back with the bright red shirt with black collar). So many of these faces i remember from Lima Co 3247, and a few of them followed with me through MOS training and into the fleet. What a wild trip, I always wondered if Id ever see the footage that came from the people standing in the back corner with cameras recording us as we were processed, but I never expected to actually find it. Thank you for posting this.
Chase Lohmeyer I have had people that graduated bootcamp and the they told us about it. we could ask questions and the recruiters would ask them if we asked them questions because its one of only few chances. and I just did this last thursday.
Chase Lohmeyer I don't know how it would scare them. I think the most "scariest part is just before leaving. I'm leaving August 11 I'm really nervous about it like I don't want to go but I'm still going. Its because its the unknown i guess. but when you get into it. its fine i guess. that's how I am
Chase Lohmeyer From what I have heard from my recruiters and being around them. they hate one someone drops out because of the work they did to get someone in. Like he managed to get a kid with plates in his arm through MEPS. They say they turn down a lot of people now. and for this RSS they look mostly for reserve contracts. They say we are lucky to be where we are next to the people who want to join but I'm not so sure on that since they keep trying to recruit more and more

A Friend of my Mom. Her Boyfriend did 17 years in the Marine Corps. And had been a Drill Instructor in San Diego Recruit Depot. The first day I met him. I knew nothing about him. But he gave the vibe as someone you would not want to fuck with. If he was that intense 10 years after retirement. I can imagine what he was like as a Drill Instructor.
This is hilarious. It was nerve-racking and scary as hell when I was in the same boat 4 years ago but now, as I watch others go through the process, I can't help but laugh. I'm just waiting to see a drill instructor like that SSgt go ballistic.
My DI Team had 3 GySgt which is something you would never see but my Senior (GySgt Hellyer) was the only Black Belt E-7 at Alpha Company at the time and GySgt Lucas and GySgt Barry both got promoted the previous Cycle so I had 3 GySgts (1 being SDI) and 2 SSgt DIs.
Wow, I sure as hell don't miss any of those days....LoL. But I loved my D.I.'s, they were GOD's in my eyes. I love seeing young people enjoying the first day, reminds me even as a SSG that the time to train is everyday.
I agree 100% with you, spootboy, When I wrote "Give 'em a break" I wasn't referring to DI's, they do an outstanding job.. My comments were for the guy that wrote he "wouldn't want to go into combat with these guys", I felt that remark was unfair& premature bc recruits just arrived at bootcamp, that's what I meant.. As the proud mother of a US Marine, [graduated Parris Island, 11/20/09] I am full of love, admiration and respect for the Corps. Thank you for letting me clear that up!

I agree with you, spootboy, 100%. When I wrote, "Give em a break" I wasn't talking about DI's being too tough on recruits, Drill Instructors an outstanding job, they do what needs to be done. As the proud mother of a US Marine, I have only love, respect & admiration for the Corps & the Drill Instructors who make Marines.. Thanks for letting me clear that up!
That's exactly what i got from it,, and you're right about the spirit, they brake your spirit down and build it up even stronger with raw rage and instinct. this kinda makes me want to experince basic but i know i wouldn't last two minutes lol
God Bless you guys and stick it out! The Marines are the best (and this from an Air Force veteran). The sense of pride and accomplishment you will have at having earned the name "Marine" will be indescribable. You will be what few are, and many of your friends back at home will still be stocking shelves at Wal-Mart or taking orders at McDonalds.
Your sight doesn't have to be 20/20 if you want to be in the Air Force..The sight issue is mainly for pilots..and even then you could have your sight corrected to 20/20 (Depending on what your sight is right now of course.)
Today, 9/11, we remember the attack on America eight years ago, I am MORE than grateful for these guys. They are what stands between us and the savages that vow to annihilate us. God Bless the US and it's military men and women and thank you for your service
Now you will see many with purple heart or silver star. In another word, those think they are bad ass by enlisting will be trained by the REAL mother fucking bad asses.
Mamamonkey Pointing out one more thing: You also failed to differentiate translate and reiterate. It's amazing how one can suck at his/her own language this bad.
I'm amazed by the whole process of indoctrination. They seem to have it down to a science. There's a method to all their madness. They know what their objective is and they know exactly how to reach it. My son joining the Army and my watching these videos has inspired me to look at the history of the armed forces in this country and look at training, etc to inform myself as much as possible. It's really interesting. The Armed Forces Rocks! I've always had MUCH respect.
So in a way, they make themselves angry so the recruits can grow stronger in power. Not a type of tactic i have seen before, but it seems to work. Thanks for the answer!
In 1971 I went to MCRD San Diego, things were a hell of a lot different ,if you made a mistake you got stomped in the ground cussed at and pt till you dropped ! as for utility's you were issued one set one pair of socks one pair of skives (under wear) and a pair of tennis shoes It was tough but that's what they thought you to be and the next 8 weeks were pure hell but in the end at graduation and they handed you that EGA you were proud of what you have become ... A United States Marine.
Negative on that one Split. Drill Instructor & Recruiting duties are volunteer duties and they are "B" billets (additional duties/MOS's). You have to "apply" (I.E. request) and be selected for both duties (among many other "B" billets). I retired a few years ago as a Gunnery Sergeant (E-7) and although I did recruiting duty, it was a choice and not a requirement.
LoL... my entire circle of best friends are all military and this video is freaking awesome. Myself 3rd Infantry US Army, Military Police SRT Trained(SWAT), SGT S------O US Marine Corps, & Sgt Lan----an, 82nd Airborne US Army Paratroopers... This SDI is fantastic!
Boot...ah, what fun, one wavering recruit and it's like blood in the water in a lagoon of hungry sharks, one gets you, then another, pretty soon you are heaving mess with five or six of those madmen on you screaming and spitting, you feel your stomach drop and it's all over for you. Get on my quarterdeck!!!! Love it, great vid!
I find this really fascinating and interesting, I wonder if they showed video clips of the real military like this to kids in HS or college, if they would get the same type of numbers of enlistees. But I get why these Sgt do what they do, its not to bully or abuse these men, its to rebuild them into fearless Marine warriors. Still though, you can't help but feel sorry for those poor kids, while laughing at them at the same time.
@LucasWitt15 the green bag is your valubles bag. you put your ID, money, stamps and such in that green bag. papers, clothing, etc is put in the white bag.
hey fr3sh2d3ath55 dont worry youll get through fine. I went through MCRD in 2001, experienced all the same stuff, stayed in 8 years and got out as a Sgt. Remember, move fast, if they scream at you, scream back and just keep doing what they tell you to do and youll be fine. NEVER QUIT!! Earn that title. There is nothing you will ever experience as long as you live that will give you the feeling you get on graduation day.
Some thing you might not know unless you have been there, it is about 2 to 3 am in the morning when this is happening. Purposely done to maximize your sense of disorientation and confusion while be processed before being assigned hopefully to a Recruit Training company. Purposely done to maximize your sense of disorientation and confusion while be processed before being assigned hopefully to a Recruit Training company.
I did pretty shity in boot camp. I still graduated Oct. 23rd 1998. After just over three years of service I received an OTH discharge for going u.a. but I did not leave for a Corps related problem. I had a personal problem that had nothing to do with the Marines. I just wanted to say I'm so sorry. I can't change the past but if I could I would. Sorry again. Please forgive me I had issues. God bless.
@crazbadass94 "yes sir" (or "no sir") is when you are answering a question...a sentence or statement directed at you that ends with a question mark. "Aye aye sir" is just an acknowledgment to a sentence or statement directed at you that is not in the form of a question.
LOL Lessons learned: You can't do anything right. You can't yell loud enough. You can't move fast enough. You aren't worthy...yet, but you will be...eventually. And these DIs are the ONLY ones who can teach you how. Semper Fi, DIs!
Bring a tennis racket and some checkers. After you meet your drill instructors they will always march you back from evening chow and the rest of the night you can do whatever you want until lights out at 2330!
Haha I did just read through that a few days ago and it really helped me out. Thanks anyways though! I'm really looking forward to earning the marine title. Semper Fi!
that black dude killed it had me rolling, bouncing up and down like that lmao

I love how the Asian guy did exactly what the DI told him to, in one try, without getting yelled at.
Not hard to do just do like they ask and respond with some volume.
Listen, and do it correctly the first time.
Boot camp was the funniest stage of my Marine career!! I've never laughed so hard like i did at MCRD!!
I always felt DI's were serious comedians. Funniest people ever, but keep your bearings and not laugh.
@@KangRo29- SCREAM AYE AYE SIR!!!!!! LOUDER!!!! LOUDER!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I would literally bring nothing. Why do these recruits have so much stuff?
They are told to so the DI's can yell at them about how much they brought.
Because recruiters don't know what they're doing and don't prep recruits correctly.

But I get why these Sgt do what they do, its not to bully or abuse these men, its to rebuild them into fearless Marine warriors. Still though, you can't help but feel sorry for those poor kids, while laughing at them at the same time.
@2:09 his working over my nephew!! Give him hell Gunny!!
I leave in 61 days (May 2,2011) to San Diego. I'm so excited and nervous.
After the initial shock of receiving lol the hardest part about MCRD is not laughing at the DI's...unless you're a namby pamby.
God Bless these young men.
@LucasWitt15 the green bag is your valubles bag. you put your ID, money, stamps and such in that green bag. papers, clothing, etc is put in the white bag.
jesus, this is INTENSE
It's not only like this on day 1 its like this for a good part of bootcamp, Atleast in CA
hey fr3sh2d3ath55 dont worry youll get through fine.
Wow...this brings back memories.
Thank you for the suggestion Sgt. I will definitely do that.
Some thing you might not know unless you have been there, it is about 2 to 3 am in the morning when this is happening. Purposely done to maximize your sense of disorientation and confusion while be processed before being assigned hopefully to a Recruit Training company. God bless.
Im gonna join the Marine Corps after I get out of High School. Excited about it. Good thing it's my last year.
That Gunny is now 1stSgt Vargas, he's the greatest Company 1stSgt I ever had. He made me a better Sergeant of Marines. Get Some 1stSgt!
Man, I could wake up pleasantly to the sound of DIs screaming.
Holy hell dude, you have been in every military video i seen.
What a warm welcome.
My friend was a marine drill Sargent and calm and nice as can be but on base wow look out!
@crazbadass94 "yes sir" (or "no sir") is when you are answering a question...a sentence or statement directed at you that ends with a question mark.
"Aye aye sir" is just an acknowledgment to a sentence or statement directed at you that is not in the form of a question.
So much motivation in receiving days haha...
one more week and ill be there cant wait!!!!!
Omg I found this video by pure accident and I'm actually in this video..half of these guys were in my platoon..Lima Co. Plt. 3247 babayyy....
I don't see a CAR on him but a bunch of other ribbons. POG power
yeah I was looking as well . didn't see a CAR , a couple of ICM , but that was about it. on most of the DI's
I'll be there when I graduate HS!!! Well literally I'll be in Parris Island (I live on the east coast). IT'S GONNA BE SCARY, BUT CANT WAIT!!
LOL Lessons learned: You can't do anything right. You can't yell loud enough. You can't move fast enough. You aren't worthy...yet, but you will be...eventually. And these DIs are the ONLY ones who can teach you how. Semper Fi, DIs!
Ohhh I see haha thanks, good to know. Im inlisting soon, im a Senior in High School at the moment but going to inlist this month =)
They need to make another Making Marines series. It was done really well and didn't cut around the bull shit that some of the videos do.
Good luck and Semper Fidelis.
little do these kids know this is the most easiest part of boot, and here the DI's are being nice
Bring a tennis racket and some checkers. After you meet your drill instructors they will always march you back from evening chow and the rest of the night you can do whatever you want until lights out at 2330!
1 month and I get to experience this. Can't wait.
Ah the shark attack,
brings back such fond memories.
Haha I did just read through that a few days ago and it really helped me out. Thanks anyways though! I'm really looking forward to earning the marine title. Semper Fi!
Damn I really feel sorry for the last guy.
awsome i cant wait to be there this just makes ne nore anxious to be there
Its all BS and show. Instructors pretending to be badass had me laughing the whole time! Best moments of my military career.
