The reason why you get to near perfection on Idina Menzel’s performance here is because you can genuinely believe her inner-transformation through simply how her face starts to transform more intensely into more aggressive expressions, and organically at that. She is the real article for that role. Also Chenoweth my god
Truly incredible. I'm fortunate enough to have seen them both in original previews, and in multiple opening performances. You described it perfectly. Nothing will ever compare to the magic they created here
what separates Idina from the rest is that she captures that brink-of-insanity element that no one else seems able to recreate. the others are always just too in control, vocally and otherwise. she's so magical at her craft.
Idina and Kristin were the first two I ever heard for Wicked, and to this day they are still my all time favorites. The chemistry, harmonies and timing of their songs were amazing and I feel all the others rush through it, especially on this song. But what they all forget is this song is not a race, it's a marathon. The slow pace, gradually increasing is what really sets the tone for this scene and song and gives me goosebumps every single time
I absolutely love love LOVE Carole Shelley as Madame Morrible. She sounds positively terrifying as she delivers her line naming Elphaba as the Wicked Witch
It’s been nearly a week since the Super Bowl trailer for the movie! Wicked made me the musical theatre geek I am today! With the broomstick and wand past to Cynthia & Ariana, years of eagerly waiting for this beloved story to come to the big screen is on the line. And Defying Gravity has got to leave us wanting more.
I watched wicked around a month ago in Australia (2023) and it is literally life changing and I wish I could also watch the og cast but the Aus cast is soooo good too honestly a once in a lifetime experience this song at the end when she flies with the lights all around her you HAVE to go and experience it for yourself trust me its literally the best thing ever ever ever
In addition to her incredible talent, I think what makes Idina Menzel so amazing is her passion for the role, and character, it just truly shines. I’ve seen Wicked a few times and am for sure no theater expert by any means, but no one does/did it like her.
it always make me cry I can somehow relate to elphaba. I am now free and I am defying the limits that I am not used to before. This is my forever fave. song I am even now crying writing this comment. Thank you Idina Mendzel for inspiring me to defy the gravity that I am always circulating on and on for the past 25 yrs.
I just saw wicked for the first time. Im mad I didn’t get to see the Kristen and Idina version. They were just ALLLLLLL in the performance! What I saw tonight wasn’t this energy at all.
They screwed up and never made a high-res version with Kristen, Idina and Norbert. Sadly. All we have is some half-ass bootlegs, the longest with the inferior Fiyero stand-in, Taye Diggs. 😢
There is nothing like watching two performers in their prime. I am 25 and I wish I was 25 when this was recorded. I would have rather been a 2000s adult any day over this nightmare.

@@MitchPR08 has it been confirmed that it's from San Francisco? If it hasn't I seriously doubt it, because the script is the finalised script and not the placeholder script used in San Francisco. Also, a lot of her San Francisco riffs are absent - and one that she only started using in later Broadway is there: she extended the "meeeeeeee" in the first bring me down, something that she didn't start doing until a lot later in Broadway, and she didn't riff the 2nd bring me down, which I've never heard her do in San Francisco However if it has been confirmed then I digress

It's no surprise her best recordings are the ones where she _didn't_ know she was being recorded! She also has asthma here’s you can tell she signaled to backstage that she needs her inhaler ready.
So the panic breathing helps with what you said
I'll take your word for it, since the video quality is so terrible it's difficult to make out any faces
They sing like it’s just the two of them and no one else in the world exists. Theater perfection.

The chemistry is unreal. We are lucky to be witness. Even through a screen. Gosh I hope the film does the OG’s justice.

part of what sells this so much on Idina's part is that you hear every gasp for air. Every one.

Shes my cousin she slays
As someone who’s first cast recording was with Idina & Kristin I know how you feel
I saw it last month in Melbourne, absolutely stunning
How did she do this 8 shows a week for years and not permanently damage her voice?
She rested her voice by drinking hot tea with a lemon wedge.
She is a professional singer and this song suits her vocal range.
she did though
She did damage it, as did Meat Loaf on the brutal 7-nights a week Bat Out of Hell tour (77-78) that destroyed his voice for a decade.
you can fairly sing everyday and not have permanently damaged if you use technics
“An no body ,
In all of Oz, no wizard that there is or was, is EVER GONNA BRING ME DOWN!”
That climax is absolute perfection, and never gets old!

no
To appreciate the most read The Wicked Years, Baum’s Oz books (1900-1919), and watch the 1930s Wizard of Oz

I love the origionals but its a bit annoying to hear the breaths as she sings.
She has Asthma and had an asthmatic attack during this. I already prefer hearing breathing in LIVE singing vs Pre Recorded lip syncing.
She's singing high notes loudly and is suspended in midair. I think she can be forgiven for that lol
