Yeah and I - as a vocal coach - disagree to the should ...closed or open vowel is just a question of taste...breath support wise the closed vowel is much easier and less hard to sustain (especially on a tired or sick day). It is less resonant BUT it is also quieter so a valid choice if you decide to not go 10 on the volume meter in the high belt area. She did open it up in a lot of performances...Willemijn that is...she can do it all. Also a tighter sound does not mean that it is automatically uncomfortable or "squeezed" in an unhealthy way...there are distinctions.

I think they chose that version of Idina because, in a lot of instances, that’s how her voice sounds now. People say it’s because she did the role for so long but Jackie Burns has been in the same role for significantly longer than Idina and has maintained a healthy sounding voice. That video of Idina shows what it sounds like when she sings it now!

You are one of the few voice teachers that do these "react" videos with an actual purpose. You are not biased and actually offer constructive criticism, along with a discussion of technique. Many others do not even have a teaching or performance background. So, thank you! I am a classical voice/piano/trumpet teacher, but many of my students love musical theatre.
