@@JaySmith_ So, because of one actress's performance in one part of one song: said actress is better? I'm not saying one actress is better than another but judging one's performance because of a minute part of the musical is ridiculous.
C.J. Mancini well I mean idina did have some tuff vocal damage after performing as Elphie and there were other actresses who played elphie that didn’t suffer from vocal damage, suggesting that their practices were healthier, and “better.” Idina is an amazing actress but there were others who seemed to perform the role just as, if not even more better than idina.
Yeah, watching this performance it's really easy to forget they're singing a song from a show they were in together. It feels like it's just what they want to say to each other as people.
I honestly think that Wicked will stand the test of time for hundreds of years, but no two women will do it better than Kristin and Idina. It was made for them.
I saw Wicked this year on Broadway. IT WAS AMAZING!!!! I only wish that I could have watched these two play Glenda and Alphaba! It was a spectacular musical!
As a piano player myself, I'd just like to commend how respectful the pianist was of listening to the singers and reacting accordingly, whether it was slowing down and waiting until Chenoweth first sang 'For Good', or switching from pianissimo to fortissimo when it was important to show softness or power. It was all so wonderful, and I'm sure it's a memory you'll never forget, playing for and with the two of them.
NERD ALERT: throughout the show, it's been Galinda/Glinda singing the higher parts and Elphaba singing the lower harmonies and melodies. In a song where they have "changed for good" their singing parts are reversed. I always thought that was neat.
I know a lot of people say that they are too old now to play the characters in the movie, but if nothing else they should have these two come back to record this song for the end credits for those who love the original cast version.

My middle school music teacher committed suicide a few days ago and she absolutely loved Wicked. We sang a choral version of this song in high school like 8 years ago and it always stuck with me. I’m now currently getting my degree in music performance to eventually get an education degree to teach like her. She was incredibly talented and did so much for our community and especially our music department. She also got to work with Broadway superstars. She always got lead roles in musical theater shows. She was a real life Mary Poppins. No one could’ve ever expected this would happen.

My father put me up for adoption at birth because he was very mentally ill and not financially stable. He spent a lifetime mourning the loss of his daughter (me), unable to move on but believing that he made the right choice. I met him almost two years ago, he had moved around between his siblings homes, never being able to settle anywhere or commit to anything or anyone. He drove himself mad but was undoubtedly the most incredibly selfless man I ever met. He was just suffering from so much internal conflict that he could not ever be at peace. He passed in February, and this song always makes me think of him. I miss him so much. Goodbye David 💕 Because I knew you, I have been changed for good.

My 49 year old husband died last month while scuba diving. A blood clot from his leg released and moved to his lungs. We were married for 3 years, and knew each other for 5 years total. Knowing each other definitely made us better people. "Because I knew you, I have been changed for good." I love you and miss you, Joe.
I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my Dad 5 years ago while we were both going through cancer treatment. He passed, I survived, but because of how he changed me a part of him gets to survive. Never forget that as long as you live, Joe lives on in you. That is what this song says to me.
How beautiful is it to watch Kristen Chenoweth’s face when Idina comes in for that second verse? Chenoweth seems to be taking so much joy in watching Idina do what she does. Then the harmony starts and the song starts to descend like big tidal waves of sound. Powerful and profound.
That moment where you realize it doesn’t matter how much time has passed since the first time they sang this together they will always have the perfect voices for this song and we as an audience can feel the connection between the actresses it’s amazing
Why does this make me feel like crying? I feel it relates perfectly to their personal relationship and it's like OMG they love and respect each other from being so fresh and young to now being seasoned pros it's so awesome
I just cannot hear this song without sobbing. I've had to pull my car over before now. It's is such a happy song, I love the idea that you can thank people and experiences for the lessons they can give you. I love the idea of thanking and letting go. It also makes me think of friends and loved ones no longer with us. This song is so beautiful in so many ways.
Me: Oh cool Kristin: I've heard it said... Me: *bursts into floods of tears* I do roll my eyes at people who adamantly claim that any one acting portrayal is the "only" one like you can't enjoy all the wonderful women who have played these roles but damn do these two give me goosebumps. I feel like, and I have no insider knowledge to back this up, that they are not best friends in real life and never will be but they sincerely believe these words when they sing them to each other. It goes beyond acting and nice singing and into something else.
They give me goosebumps as well, but so have others that have played these roles. This song always makes me tear up as it's the end of the show that I've sat mesmerized at many many times.
"So much of me is made of what I learned from you. You'll be with me like a handprint on my heart. And now whatever way our stories end, I know you have re-written mine by being my friend." Those lyrics are what makes me cry everytime I hear this song. With Idina and Kristin singing this masterpiece, I am bawling like a baby.
I don't care what people say about Idina voice. She sounds the same to me. She's always gonna be Elphaba in my mind. She is Elphaba and Elphaba was made for her to play. I love the way she sounds,it doesn't matter the time period. But this is just my opinion.
I can't help but think how the lyrics of this song is perfect for where these two women are right now. Both have gone on to have wonderful careers, and because they knew each other they have been changed for good.
After spending 2019 listening mostly to pop music, coming back to Kristin and Idina in 2020 just blows my mind. You just don't hear those technical duets and harmonies on the radio.
There is magic being created here, anyone who feels their eyes getting watery feels the power. It's very rare humans get a chance to see real magic before their eyes. This is real magic people. The music and their voices casting spells all around us. Words have power, music has power. Their love for each other as friends only manifests these feelings more.
You can really see how the show has affected their friendship as they sing, it's utterly beautiful. I love that little hug at the end too, there have been and will be some amazing Elphabas and Glindas, but these two will never be forgotten as the first. (Also who on earth are Nikki and Gabbi?)
My bestfriend passed away last month, we'd often sit and discuss our favourite musicals, especially after a few drinks and spend hours playing eachother our favourite musical tracks. This was played at her funeral and i find myself here most nights. still shedding a tear!!
I'm sorry for your loss I lost my son in 2023 he love theater that was he life he some so much of the theater that I didn't know may you get the peace you need from our lord 😢😢
What I love most about them is they're both so different in characteristics AND in singing. Kristin's short and has blonde hair, Idina's taller with brown hair (thus perfect Elphie and Glinda match) and with singing voices, Kristin has the more higher, southerny tone to her voice and idina has the more alto, raspy voice to hers, yet when they put them both together...magic happens. I truly believe it was definitely God's intention to put these two fabulous women together. I'll never get tired of them, this musical or this very song in particular ❤ perfect friendship
I agree that they were a perfect blend, but I have seen others do a good job as well. I also will never get tired of them or this musical. I think I've seen it 6-7 times now (saw Idina my first time) and my grown daughters love it as much as I. We always go together! We are mesmerized from beginning to end.
Janice Dickson I long to have been able to witness they're potential in person. But I saw it on RUclips. The Ally mauzey and Donna vivino version. And Ally mauzey is one of my faves because she makes the character her own and is extremely hilarious I was on the floor dying most of the time. I just love Kristin and Idina because of the movies I've seen them in as a kid and when they both started in Glee. I agree there's others who do just as exceptional. So glad you get to witness them multiple times. I bet they're as phenomenal in person as they are on the media :)
the way they look at each other. Omg the special relationship they would have shared up on that stage! bring on the movie! (as long as they are both starring)
This song never fails to bring a tear to my eye - when you realise that it's essentially a conversation between two best friends who will never see each other again, you can understand why
caitlin OMG same my show choir sang this at Disney and I cry thinking how now I don't know any of the people I was best friends with. I love this song soooo much it's one of my favs from wicked
This is one of those lyrics that just blows me away with its simplicity and complexity-"Who can say if I've been changed for the better, but because I knew you, I've been changed for good." You gotta give Schwartz credit- he knows how to turn a phrase like nobody's business!!!
You can really see the respect and affection they have for each other during this performance, just by the way they look at each other. They had so much chemistry when they were in the show together. You can just tell how close they became working together, and how easily they sing this song together, how beautifully and easily they harmonize together. There’s just so much love there between the two of them, it’s beautiful. I mean, when they hold hands during the end of the song, and then they hug after. You can see they truly love each other.
Still get full body chills everytime they harmonize on that last "I have been changed". Literal perfection that is. They sound so effortless together without either of them having to hold back. I'll love it forever.
Kristin and Idina will forever be the iconic Galinda and Elphaba, but in the new film, Ariana and Cynthia have a pretty good crack at it! Looking forward to seeing how this is done in part 2 9f the film ❤
Do you know what I LOVE the most about this video? I LOVE that Kristin & Idina NEVER STOP SMILING throughout the whole thing!!!! (Plus, the way they sing it, it doesn't sound like Galinda singing with Elphaba.........it sounds like Kristin singing with Idina.......) Ok, one last thing........them taking hands at the end, and the HUG..............CRYING!!!
They love eachother - not romantically but. I think the song is true for them as friends and when they sing it it had double meaning for then and their characters. There is a taping of this song on their last Broadway show together and you can see the legit tears running down their faces. We want to make all love romantic but it isnt. They love eachother as good friends and that pure emotion is beautiful
I don't think I have seen a musical made into a film I have loved so much since Chicago. The whole cast and crew did an amazing job and hope they sweep the Oscars. It's such a magical experience. So many easter eggs and nods to the original book, Wizard of Oz movie and the stage musical. If people were crying a little at the end of Part 1, they will be bawling by the time this song finishes. . . 💚💗💚💗💚💗
My husband isn't into musicals (he has trouble following the story when the songs include plot). We went to see Wicked, and he surprisingly enjoyed it. When I asked him what he liked about it... he said he was very impressed with the "heartfelt lesbian love story"... Yeah. He doesn't get musicals.
* Kristin Chenoweth I've heard it said That people come into our lives For a reason Bringing something we must learn And we are led to those Who help us most to grow if we let them And we help them in return Well, I don't know if I believe that's true But I know I'm who I am today Because I knew you Like a comet pulled from orbit As it passes the sun Like a stream that meets a boulder Halfway through the wood Who can say if I've been changed for the better But because I knew you I have been changed for good * Idina Menzel It well may be That we will never meet again In this lifetime So, let me say before we part So much of me Is made of what I learned from you You'll be with me Like a handprint on my heart And now whatever way our stories end I know you have rewritten mine By being my friend Like a ship blown from its mooring By a wind off the sea Like a seed dropped by a sky bird In a distant wood Who can say if I've been changed for the better But because I knew you * Kristin Chenoweth Because I knew you *Both I have been changed for good * Idina Menzel And just to clear the air I ask forgiveness For the things I've done, you blame me for * Kristin Chenoweth But then I guess We know there's blame to share *Both And none of it seems to matter anymore Like a comet pulled from orbit (like a ship blown from its mooring) As it passes the sun (by a wind off the sea) Like a stream that meets a boulder (like a seed dropped by a bird) Halfway through the wood (in the wood) Who can say if I've been changed for the better I do believe I have been changed for the better And because I knew you Because I knew you Because I knew you I have been changed For good
Believe it or not my mom had them play this song at my dad's funeral recently and as soon as it started playing all you could hear were people crying. And I can't stop crying now.
The hug at the end is very sweet. Felt almost like something shifted at this moment. For years prior the rumors were they were at odds, but after this performance it seemed like the appeared together in public more often. The looks they give each other here though… you really feel them singing to each other and underlines the lyrics’ double meaning. This version might never be topped.
Both of their voices have aged so well. Still very much them, but their talent's grown even more and there's even more vocal control and richness in their singing, and their voices have matured.
@@MICHAEL-s9w2d No, don't get me wrong Cynthia and Ariana did a good job so don't get it twisted it's just Idina and Kristin ARE Elphaba & Glinda I mean when they perform the songs, especially Idina performing Defying Gravity and Kristin performing Popular, now it's like their respective characters are still in them the way their facial expressions change and the little gestures and mannerisms they make, Idina doing her crazy eyes performing Defying Gravity, like they are just THEE most iconic Elphaba & Glinda.
It has been a year since my friend ended her own life and nothing has been the same since. She taught me so much and I will cherish all memories I had with her. There are no words to describe the pain I feel from her passing and there is no amount of time to heal the wounds. Please if you are considering suicide just know that there are people who care about you. There are so so many things that happen after her death that she never got to experience or will get to experience. I miss her so so much but I'm still going to move forward with my life in memory of her.
i love this so much because when they sing this on the original recording or in the show, their singing to each others character. now, years later, without the show, the song is just as emotional but instead of elphaba and glinda, its just Kristin and Idina and it shows how much their bond has grown over time
It's just wonderful to hear those voices together in this time of social isolation. Fantastic voices, great song. Just so happens Turner Classic movies played 'The Wizard of Oz' today which was the inspiration for Wicked. They were sisters, don'tcha know. :)
I will never forget hearing this song performed live for the first time. I was in London watching the play for the first time. I bought a ticket last minute and sat with an obstructed view all my myself. I couldn't hold back my tears when this song was performed. Such a beautiful, powerful testiment to friendship.
Kristin Chenoweth and Indina Menzel are the best Elphaba and Glinda to ever graced broadway. These two need to be in the Wicked Movie!
Dunkirk I think they might be
That would be totally "wicked" but unless one or the other is cast as Madam Morrible, it will not be.

How beautiful is it to watch Kristen Chenoweth’s face when Idina comes in for that second verse? Chenoweth seems to be taking so much joy in watching Idina do what she does. Then the harmony starts and the song starts to descend like big tidal waves of sound. Powerful and profound.
I absolutely cannot look at what now passes for Kristin Chenoweth's face.
I know im gonna cry so hard when this happens next year
There will never be a better duo than these two for Wicked. The chemistry and deep love and respect is unmatchable.
No other Glinda/Elphaba pairs voices go together QUITE like Idina and Kristin's. Their voices were MEANT to be together.
That moment where you realize it doesn’t matter how much time has passed since the first time they sang this together they will always have the perfect voices for this song and we as an audience can feel the connection between the actresses it’s amazing
Get ready. It's happening again.
Already crying with the first note. How can I watch this without sobbing next year?
That harmony on "I do believe I have been changed for the better" gets me every time.
Yep. Eargasm
im gonna lose my shit when ari and cynthia sing this
Omg Ik im actually gonna bawl my eyes out 😭
It won't surpass the connection between these two, this is THE blueprint
This was sung at my brother's funeral and hurts Everytime I hear it but I can't stop listening
Why does this make me feel like crying? I feel it relates perfectly to their personal relationship and it's like OMG they love and respect each other from being so fresh and young to now being seasoned pros it's so awesome
David Dye seasoned XD (Imagines Kristin and Idina with bbq seasoning on a grill)
My daughters choir sang this at her funeral, so powerful...
I am so sorry for your loss … May she be remembered in all the people that loved her so much
I am so sorry. I'm sure only a beautiful soul would impact people's lives in this way. Sending peace to you and your family. ❤
Me: Oh cool
Kristin: I've heard it said...
Me: *bursts into floods of tears*
I do roll my eyes at people who adamantly claim that any one acting portrayal is the "only" one like you can't enjoy all the wonderful women who have played these roles but damn do these two give me goosebumps.
This song is so good I actually took the time to pause it before I sneezed.
Ha ha yes same
Broke down when they held hands! They both look and sound so beautiful and it's so nice they get to sing this together again after all these years
"So much of me is made of what I learned from you. You'll be with me like a handprint on my heart. And now whatever way our stories end, I know you have re-written mine by being my friend."
Those lyrics are what makes me cry everytime I hear this song. With Idina and Kristin singing this masterpiece, I am bawling like a baby.
Nobody can sing this like Kristin & Idina. They’re incredible.
This song is soo deep that it makes me cry everytime.
After spending 2019 listening mostly to pop music, coming back to Kristin and Idina in 2020 just blows my mind. You just don't hear those technical duets and harmonies on the radio.
I like to think that this is Glinda finally finding out Elphie is alive and this is their reunion song ❤️
Yess😭😭😍😍
Yes, oh you just made me cry more
+Angel OMG yes! Yes! Yeeess!
That Adele Dazeem is wickedly talented.
lol!
Haha What about Travolta?
Thank you so much for that XD
lol. Love Wicked.
+Muffin Dragon he's Edna from Hairspray and can't stop the beat
There is magic being created here, anyone who feels their eyes getting watery feels the power. It's very rare humans get a chance to see real magic before their eyes. This is real magic people. The music and their voices casting spells all around us. Words have power, music has power. Their love for each other as friends only manifests these feelings more.
You can really see how the show has affected their friendship as they sing, it's utterly beautiful. I love that little hug at the end too, there have been and will be some amazing Elphabas and Glindas, but these two will never be forgotten as the first.
(Also who on earth are Nikki and Gabbi?)
Andie G you know their cut with them just practicing...i always cry at that. and galinda's last day...woah
Andie G Nikki and Gabbie are Sisters and beauty gurus on RUclips who just recently posted a cover of this on their channel.
Molly Donahue Ah okay
Both of them really said C H E E K B O N E S
Right?! I couldn’t look away!
I don't care what age they are, they need to star in the Wicked movie
Come back to say your wish come true
My bestfriend passed away last month, we'd often sit and discuss our favourite musicals, especially after a few drinks and spend hours playing eachother our favourite musical tracks. This was played at her funeral and i find myself here most nights. still shedding a tear!!
❤
I'm sorry for your loss
I'm sorry for your loss I lost my son in 2023 he love theater that was he life he some so much of the theater that I didn't know may you get the peace you need from our lord 😢😢
Sorry for my spelling he show me so much from the theater 🎥 ❤❤❤
❤ I'm still here, god bless you x ❤
You can't beat this - even if your mother was singing this to you. this is magic like only magic can be.
the way they look at each other. Omg the special relationship they would have shared up on that stage! bring on the movie! (as long as they are both starring)
This made me cry.
@DJJ Old? What is that?
This song never fails to bring a tear to my eye - when you realise that it's essentially a conversation between two best friends who will never see each other again, you can understand why
3:53 that smile kristin gives idina makes me cry every time
this was over two years ago and i still start crying 10 seconds into the video
caitlin OMG same my show choir sang this at Disney and I cry thinking how now I don't know any of the people I was best friends with. I love this song soooo much it's one of my favs from wicked
SAME
And now you get to cry again for the Halloween special.
This is one of those lyrics that just blows me away with its simplicity and complexity-"Who can say if I've been changed for the better, but because I knew you, I've been changed for good." You gotta give Schwartz credit- he knows how to turn a phrase like nobody's business!!!
Some people say that it’s the perfect goodbye song, but I think of it as a thank you for everything you’ve done song. Anyone else?
The Mini Life Same!
It's definitely a goodbye song, it literally says "It well may be that we will never see again in this lifetime"
Countrycowboy08 People can interprete things different!
Isn't that what goodbyes essentially are, thanking for everything? Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.
TuomariMuller Not always, but it could be
You can really see the respect and affection they have for each other during this performance, just by the way they look at each other.
Can’t fake that chemistry
Alicia Norrie Try the tango Maureen 😏
@@youtubehandle_kate Try Aaron Tveit and Gavin Creel sing "Take Me or Leave Me ";)
I love this because they're not singing this song as their characters, but as themselves. It's beautiful.
(Plus, the way they sing it, it doesn't sound like Galinda singing with Elphaba.........it sounds like Kristin singing with Idina.......)
Ok, one last thing........them taking hands at the end, and the HUG..............CRYING!!!
If people were crying a little at the end of Part 1, they will be bawling by the time this song finishes. . . 💚💗💚💗💚💗
I started crying before they even started tbh
Crystal H me too
Same
My husband isn't into musicals (he has trouble following the story when the songs include plot). We went to see Wicked, and he surprisingly enjoyed it. When I asked him what he liked about it... he said he was very impressed with the "heartfelt lesbian love story"... Yeah. He doesn't get musicals.
lol wdym he gets it completely
😂😂😂😂
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA can't blame him tho
🤣🤣🤣
Crying again for my dear husband David. 7 lonely years since you died. He helped me grow and changed me for good.
Love to you
Hugs to you. You were lucky to have him.
I’ve always loved this version and now that Wicked is out I had to come back to appreciate it
still to date one of the most beautiful duets written
And as performed by Kristin and Idina!
I played this song at my husband's Celebration of life.
I am so sorry for your loss.
God bless you. Accept my condolences for your loss!
I'm so sorry 🕊
Not me thinking it was his birthday :((
My condolences
I will never get over how Idina looks at Kristin......
* Kristin Chenoweth
I've heard it said
That people come into our lives
For a reason
Bringing something we must learn
And we are led to those
Who help us most to grow if we let them
And we help them in return
Well, I don't know if I believe that's true
But I know I'm who I am today
Because I knew you
Like a comet pulled from orbit
As it passes the sun
Like a stream that meets a boulder
Halfway through the wood
Who can say if I've been changed for the better
But because I knew you
I have been changed for good
* Idina Menzel
It well may be
That we will never meet again
In this lifetime
So, let me say before we part
So much of me
Is made of what I learned from you
You'll be with me
Like a handprint on my heart
And now whatever way our stories end
I know you have rewritten mine
By being my friend
Like a ship blown from its mooring
By a wind off the sea
Like a seed dropped by a sky bird
In a distant wood
Who can say if I've been changed for the better
But because I knew you
* Kristin Chenoweth
Because I knew you
*Both
I have been changed for good
* Idina Menzel
And just to clear the air
I ask forgiveness
For the things I've done, you blame me for
* Kristin Chenoweth
But then I guess
We know there's blame to share
*Both
And none of it seems to matter anymore
Like a comet pulled from orbit (like a ship blown from its mooring)
As it passes the sun (by a wind off the sea)
Like a stream that meets a boulder (like a seed dropped by a bird)
Halfway through the wood (in the wood)
Who can say if I've been changed for the better
I do believe I have been changed for the better
And because I knew you
Because I knew you
Because I knew you
I have been changed
For good
Simply beautiful and awe inspiring
Believe it or not my mom had them play this song at my dad's funeral recently and as soon as it started playing all you could hear were people crying. And I can't stop crying now.
so sorry for your loss🫂
@@jamesarco27 Thank you.
May you and your mom be comforted, Lauren.
@@saratropper7842 Thank you.
Wow. Two professionals know how to sing and how to sing together.
With only a piano. Stunning. A heartfelt beautiful song.
The chemistry and sincerity of their emotions elevates the entire performance💖
Linds Tee they hate each other in real life
No one will ever equal Kristin & Idina in these roles.
they just have ....
I still say Idina and Kristin should be in the movie version of Wicked. Nobody sings the songs from Wicked like they do. They were great.
They should've done the movie a long time ago.
48 year old dad in NZ… just saw the movie with my 10 year old daughter… tears then… tears now…
귀여워
Kristen Chenoweth and Indina Manzel you are the greatest singers
they make singing look effortless when it's obviously not
Idina...
Graduating college in a week. Just cried my eyes out
Congrats
***** Enjoy it while you can! Best time ever, but it goes by so fast
Same 😭😭😭😭
OMG I GRADUATE IN A WEEK TOO!!!! BUT FROM HIGH SCHOOL!!! CONGRATULATIONS BTW!!!
Congrats. Enjoying this graduation present?
Idina Menzel never ages I swear.. :' this version will forever be my favorite.
She has Botox for Migraines. Shes never hid it though and even if some of it was cosmetic at least shes honest about it. One of my Broadway Heroes
I can't imagine anyone doing this song better than these two. They are why I fell in love with "Wicked".
at 3:10 they look at each other so lovingly and so happily, this was their favourite song and it seems they missed singing it together
i love this so much because when they sing this on the original recording or in the show, their singing to each others character. now, years later, without the show, the song is just as emotional but instead of elphaba and glinda, its just Kristin and Idina and it shows how much their bond has grown over time
It's just wonderful to hear those voices together in this time of social isolation. Fantastic voices, great song. Just so happens Turner Classic movies played 'The Wizard of Oz' today which was the inspiration for Wicked. They were sisters, don'tcha know. :)
I agree. Xx. Good luck through these times. You'll get through it.
I will never forget hearing this song performed live for the first time. I was in London watching the play for the first time. I bought a ticket last minute and sat with an obstructed view all my myself. I couldn't hold back my tears when this song was performed. Such a beautiful, powerful testiment to friendship.
Seen them 20 year ago, I watched the movie with family last night and in two weeks I’ll see the musical at the pantages theater again. Love it
