    i have absolutely no idea why people don't enjoy glitches in speedruns. it's the main draw for me. if i wanted to just watch someone play a game quickly with no tricks to go faster then i'd just run a let's play at double speed.

    • @echelon2k8
      @echelon2k8 7 лет назад +1

      Says the guy who has obviously never seen a glitchless speedrun. Guess what, it actually takes skill to go fast in glitchless speedruns. That's the trick.

    • @echelon2k8

      Doesn't mean he actually watched it. Someone who says that a glitchless speedrun is like a let's play at double speed clearly doesn't know what they're talking about.

    • @mattiasmoller
      @mattiasmoller 7 лет назад +15

      I agree. A speedrun for me is all about to go as fast as possible. Glitches should be allowed in a speedrun. Cheating is a different story.

    • @echelon2k8
      @echelon2k8 7 лет назад +2

      Some people would say that exploiting glitches in a game is a type of
      cheating as it's doing something that was never intended to be done by the game's designers. You can't say you're playing Chess when you're using every pawn as though it were a queen.
      Similarly, you can't say you're speedrunning a certain game when you're not actually playing that game.

    0:33 in and I'm triggered. Let's say you own a game, it's your favorite game, you play it all the time. One day you decide to challenge yourself how fast you can play it through from start to finish.
    Let's say this game is Super Mario Bros, and you get to the level 8-4 where you have to take the right pipes to get to the end. You don't "play dumb" and take the wrong ones deliberately because... whatever.. or like that one part in the level 4-4 where you must take the bottom route. Or like in the level 7-4 (no-warp-pipe run ) where you must take the right *combination* of paths in order to finish. You don't get intentionally the *combination* wrong because you "shouldn't" know them.
    Get it? A *combination*? Like in a keypad? A *combination* that you know beforehand, which you should somehow conveniently forget.
    Another example is that if you know that an enemy will spawn first from the door A, then two [whatevers] spawn right behind you. You don't play dumb in those scenarios either. Timing enemies or events are a direct result of this "forbidden knowledge": knowing where to toss a grenade, where to place a box, how long to wait, what dialogue options to choose, what guns to use/keep, what upgrades to get, knowing that you should shoot the green one first.
    Speedruns are about *knowledge* of the game and mastery of it through that knowledge. It's about beating the game as it is, using its own mechanics against it and with the skill acquired playing the game and games in general. You know what you know, and you apply that to your run, that's why we have individual people running speedruns, because different people have accumulated different knowledge about the game and its rules and mechanics (one of those mechanics might be static passwords) If you know that the game allows you to pass through a wall from a certain point, why wouldn't you use that if you can? Because of honor? Dude, the game is your obstacle and you are trying to get past/beat that obstacle as quickly as possible.
    *tl;dr: You can play a game for the first time only once. Then after that it's "cheating" if you follow the logic used in those comments.*
    PS. I myself consider clipping and skipping large portions of a level the dullest parts in speedruns, but to me they aren't cheating. No one cares but: I personally like tricks negating fall damage, outsmarting A.I., timing stunts, doing something before it was intended and using unconventional tricks to gain the upper hand (e.g. intentionally taking damage/even dying, killing an ally, destroying something you shouldn't)
    Any way now back to the video :D

    • @M1Account
      @M1Account  7 лет назад +16

      This is a great comment. Very well said.
      Lately I've been playing some older games I missed during my childhood and teenage years. Some of these have been games I've had spoiled for me pretty significantly, and some I'm going into pretty much blind. It's a stark difference.
      When I was streaming Wind Waker recently, several people said something along the lines of "I have no idea how I figured this out as a kid" when watching me figure out puzzles, even though they already knew the solution. Basically my point is, the idea of using foreknowledge in speedrunning being considered "cheating" is completely asinine. As you said, you can only play a game for the first time once. Even if it was years ago and your memory of it is blurry, it's still not even close to the same experience.
      To be fair, the guy who made the comment I'm responding to w/ this video didn't mention this idea. Maybe I should have made a response to the guy who made that particular comment, since it's actually a lot funnier. But that would have just made this run more tedious so nah.

    • @blzahz7633
      @blzahz7633 7 лет назад +9

      +M1
      This might be a bit redundant reply, but to nail it in I'll post it anyway:
      The foreknowledge can be as subtle as knowing how much you have to fear the enemies, do they take cover, do they flush you out, with or without grenades, can I run through enemy fire(I think this is very important when doing a speed run on certain games) These are things which you don't know when playing for the very first time.
      Just after the first playthrough one already knows so many things about he game like: what does the friggin' Super Star do in practice, how good is the shotgun, how many weapons there are, how enemies react to alarms/gunshots/noise, how to take advantage of that, can you hide in vents, is it worth to collect every item, how abundant is ammo/health.
      Then there is tactile learning like: does the player character stop exactly when needed, or does he/he slide because of the momentum, how much you can control the character mid-air. Some games are much more "stickier" that others, (compare Doom to Amnesia). These are very subtle, and probably unconscious things you learn and get better at, but none the less the experience is different on each playthrough.
      When the game is new, you have no idea what to expect and to what to pay attention to (that feeling is so great, I love being lost in the game,) but eventually you'll learn the boundaries and the limits of it, then it's about squeezing them tighter, knowing the game and taking every advantage of it.

    • @duanemcclure8324
      @duanemcclure8324 4 года назад

      All that said, I get the main point.. myself. You're absolutely right. You only get that rush once. I might like a certain game but, after that first time through, the 'magic's gone'. I play through some games over and over to expand - if I can - the area. I just know that I missed things from the 1st time. I'm still finding shit in games like Final Fantasy 7, 8 or 9. They just packed so much in with side quests and stuff. But, I get what you're saying. Every player is different, as are the runs. I've watched numerous people speed run this game and every one of them was different. Everybody has something to bring to the table. And, ya know what? I STILL suck! Takes me fucking hours to get through this! My problem has always been getting used to a mouse n keyboard. I've always been more comfortable with a controller..so, I suck. I didn't finish Half-Life until it got ported to PS 2. I've missed out on some good shit that didn't get ported too! And, what the hell ever happened to Kingpin?! Remember that one? That was the 'Manhunt' of PC at the time. It just fell off the planet. No port. No remake. Nothing. I hope somebody realizes that at some point. Thanks, Man. I'm with ya on this one!

    As much as I love Zylon and the rest of the SS2 community, I have to take your side on the speedrunning 'rules' people try to force on you.
    You are by far, hands down, THE best SS2 player I've ever seen. Watching this was truly a privilege. SS2 is my favorite game of all time, my number 2 being the original Deus Ex and my number 3 being Fallout 2.
    I feel like a piddling idiot watching this, my first SS2 run took me about 7 1/2 - 8 hours to complete, though I was intentionally bumbling around optional areas to explore and loot shit. Now-a-day's I can do an Impossible run in about 3 1/2 hours, and that's trying really fucking hard.
    Also..
    Disruption grenades do NOT get the level bonuses like the other ones (namely frag) do. It's considered Level 6 ammo, so like all Level 6 weapons and other max tier ammo, it benefits 0% from leveling weapon skills. On Heavy level one, disruptions beat Frags, from 3 up, they do NOT. The GL is the most powerful weapon ingame, as it's the level 1 HW so it gets ALL the bonuses to damage from level ups. A Mod 2 GL with Level 6 HW using frags can one shot most enemies in the game.
    So if that's your theory, you'd be right. Disruptions lose out to frags because unlike frags they get no bonuses from HW skill levels.
    I believe ADaOB/SCP fixes this issue, but the vanilla game has it in full force.

      Hey thanks, I'm glad you liked the run.
      To be fair, "the rest of the SS2 community" hasn't really given me any shit. Other than the screenshots I showed in the video I think I got maybe 2 other negative comments. Also I think my first playthrough was like double that time, so yeah that sounds pretty good actually lol

    • @Shadethewolfy
      @Shadethewolfy 10 месяцев назад

      SCP does, yeah. Not sure about ADaOB; I never read the changelog that closely, and ever since it got merged into SCP I can't go look lol
      I will say one thing that I think is kinda poo, talking about SCP/ADadOB, is that between versions (either between the transition from ADaOB to SCP or between an earlier version of SCP to a later version) the devs changed the Assault Rifle from a Level 3 SW to a Level 6 SW.
      So sadly I can no longer go Navy (SW, Agility, Hack) and never touch SW and put those points elsewhere more useful lol.
      Of course in my most recent playthrough I decided to just use the console to give myself a bunch of points so I could build my character the way I wanted. So.

    I agree with the premise behind this, I miss the old impossible% with no OoB, as you had to actually learn most of the game and the route rather than engineering, hydro then OoB.

    • @M1Account
      @M1Account  8 лет назад +9

      I agree, inbounds route is the best route. I have my own opinions about what routes/rules are best for various runs, this vid was just to make fun of the people who get mad or act like assholes about people running any%.

    • @FoDLoneStar
      @FoDLoneStar 8 лет назад

      Well there are always going to be those who just want to do any% and go for the fastest time possible no matter the strat/route, and then those of us who want to actually have to learn more tricks and more of the game, it's more fun to show off "How to play the game the way it was intended - but fast" Or at least with as few sequence breaks as possible and with no Out of Bounds which can ruin some runs and in the case of games like Zelda games can make runs.

    I know it`s not the way of speed runners, and I respect the speed-running community, but I really enjoyed this video than other speed-running videos. I wanted to see the tactics without sequence breaking, and that was fantastic to me. I reapet, I respect the way speed runners take, But this is enjoyable to an audience like me. Actually, In japanese, there is a "Sibari play"(which means self-tighten) style, The player makes ridiculous conditions themselves and plays with that conditions. I prefer that kind of things so ...
    You didn`t like this run, and I understand. But thanks for making this video. It was a great hour to me.

  • @bradlee7875

    Yeah, the kid who provoked this video must have assumed you didn't know SS2 inside and out because the typical "Any %" run uses an array of shortcuts and exploits.
    That, as it turns out, was a mistake. Great play-through, by the way.

    This was brilliant. System Shock 2 is one of my all-time favorites, so naturally I loved watching you crush it (even if it is three years later; hey, I just started playing again). The thing I love about watching speedruns is not only learning to play the game better casually - I will never have to caliber to run this game like you do, M1 - but that I learn where to find a lot of items I've missed over the years that could be super helpful. Also, I straight-up considered OSA a bullshit class until I watched you trash the game in your other run as an Agent. I might try that myself someday.
    Great seeing you play at GDQ, M1. Love your commentary. Curious: did you submit SS2 but it was rejected? Or do you think it's just not worth the effort and you have better games to show off? I know SS2 has more of a niche following than most games (albeit an EXTREMELY dedicated following). Which begs another question: have you tried running the patched versions? Without the graphical updates, perhaps, as they seriously bloat your load times. The SCP fixes some of the issues you were describing, like the sub-par disruption grenades. Maybe you've already posted a vid; I'll check when I'm done with the last few minutes of this one.
    Edit: Just found the 2012 run, so never mind the GDQ question.

    • @M1Account
      @M1Account  4 года назад

      I forgot to respond to this cause I have brain problems. Yeah iirc this particular run is actually on the gog version. I used to do runs on the unpatched version, and strictly speaking, an any% run is very slightly faster that way, but I haven't bothered for a long time. I also ran SS2 at AGDQ 2018 (I think that's the year???).
      Anyway thanks for the kind words. Knowing where to get useful items early on is a big part of the appeal of replaying this game, speedrunning or not.

    No PSI is a pretty stupid rule considering they're an intended part of the game. Ditto melee. I personally think the invincibility glitch is kinda lame though. Even so, routing and accurate movement require skill. I'd like to see the whiny pricks beat accomplished speed runners on glitched Any%. It's like people who get winded going to the fridge for another beer shouting advice at professional athletes on TV.
