- System Shock - In the year 1994 there came a game so far ahead of its time that only now is everyone trying to make their own version. It was a survival horror, a first person shooter, an adventure game, and immersive as hell.

(Game Description) System Shock is a 1994 first-person action role-playing video game developed by Looking Glass Technologies and published by Origin Systems. It was directed by Doug Church with Warren Spector serving as producer. The game is set aboard a space station in a cyberpunk vision of the year 2072. Assuming the role of a nameless hacker, the player attempts to hinder the plans of a malevolent artificial intelligence called SHODAN.
System Shock's 3D engine, physics simulation and complex gameplay have been cited as both innovative and influential. The developers sought to build on the emergent gameplay and immersive environments of their previous games, Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss and Ultima Underworld II: Labyrinth of Worlds, by streamlining their mechanics into a more "integrated whole".

i'll only say this about System Shock :
I became familiar with this game only few months ago , at late 2019 , and despite the fact that until today I've seen/played so many games(*thus it's very unlikely for me today to be impressed with a game) , seeing System Shock ,- a 1994 game !!!- ,was a …. *JAW-DROPPING experience* for me !!!
it has achieved excellency in every aspect , and in addition to that excellency ,it has …. *SHODAN* as well !!!
I rest my case !!!!
This game is just amazing! As essential as doom is to first person shooters, system shock is to immersive sims...many tropes and mechanics that finally achieved commercial success and mainstream recognition years later with bioshock were already present in ss. I played and finished the game recently for the first time and it's still quite good.
When Doom came out it left me baffeled. I thought this is it! And then there was System Shock! Damit this game blew my mind. This is a once in a life time experience.
Unfortunately never played it but I'm waiting for the remaster that's coming out in 2020
16:07 The upgraded version of Sensearound (the 'camera on the back of your head') actually ran at nearly the games normal speed.
I still have my original copy purchased when released. Bloody good game!
I have TWO copies, the original boxed CD version bought on release, and a backup - "just in case" from eBay 10 years later
I was shocked at the depth of difficulty options for an old game. Wasn't even sure what to select! Ended up all 3s, but combat 2...as I know some older games have steep learning curves.
Most passcodes in games are 451 or variations of as a homage. Half-Life started you with a crowbar as a homage. The industry now uses a variation of Systems Shock's key commands. The industry has as much respect for System Shock as gamers do! You also need to cover Terra Nova: Task Force Centauri. The least known Looking Glass game that is also ground breaking!
I played the hell out of the original floppy version as a kid. Despite being a scaled down version, it still scared the daylights out of me.
Still my favorite game, over twenty years later... :)
Here after playing the remake. Most fun ive had in game ina very very long time, totally blown away
Your face when we'll never get a modern game with as much control of your body as SS1 did. Variable. Height. Slider.
THE GREATEST RPG adventure game EVER
I *love* System Shock. The controls were complete arse on a cheesy biscuit and the cyberspace bits were about as fun as having an angry prostate examination, but the game is legendary for a reason. The story is amazing, the antagonist is terrifying, the atmosphere is fantastically oppressive and it all still totally hold up decades later.
It's kind of like the video game equivalent of Gone with the Wind or the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers. If you can get past the janky bits like the special effects and melodramatic acting it's pretty much timeless.
I still love System Shock 2 more though, since that is when the formula really came together. It surpassed it's predecessor in every way and became the perfect sequel.
The Many verses Shodan verses a weedy little human. One man stuck in the middle of a battle between godlike cosmic forces beyond his reckoning. It was an underdog tale for the ages.
These games were so good because they had so little to work with in terms of technology. They put all their effort into the experience rather than relying on technology to sell that experience. Looking forward to System Shock 3 but there's no way in hell it can ever live up to its forerunners.
With Cyberpunk 2077 your dreams of an exceptional game from an exceptional developer CDPR could become reality. Even more so as GOG is a part of CDPR, where I will buy System Shock to try put what I missed during the nineties playing Civilization...

Romania :)
Great video! This game simply blew me away. I dont think you praised it enough. lol
If you want to be punished - this game delivers.
You need to be cool and collected, reserve one year of your life, and consentrate.
5:19 - Something similar happened with Deus Ex,Warren Spector said that the guy who did the voice acting for Alex Jacobson was his nephew, and that the voice actor for Walter Simons was his good friend.
Walton Simons was voiced by Tom Hall, who co-founded id Software (being creative director on pretty much all of their pre-Doom games) before leaving and going to Apogee, directing Rise of the Triad, then eventually going to Ion Storm and making Anachronox. So he's pretty awesome.
Superb game, i still play it.
A good game and with a scary authoritative , apathetic female A.I voice.
best game of all time
You were wrong on only one thing: You can upgrade the rearview camera to be realtime. It wasn't a technical limitation.
Interesting how many genre have had their start with this game :)
And how many passcodes are "451" or variations of!
When you need to get an isotope, you'll hardly notice a small button lost among the pile of multi-colored pixels and will run in circles trying to figure out what to do.
*Some of the best game design you'll ever see*
Have you covered blade runner ? Or BioForge ?
Can you ever change the difficulty of each game component again or just once at the beginning? I ask because I don’t know what difficulty I’d want to play, say, the cyberspace parts of the game, until I’ve tried them and know how good I am at them, etc.
I'm rather late, but I'd recommend keeping story at normal, then lessen combat and cyberspace stuff. Let your first playthrough of the game be a bit more relaxed as you figure out everything you're supposed to do. Constantly trying to kill respawning enemies while running around, trying to know what to do is a little frustrating. And the cyberspace stuff is, in my opinion, just not very interesting.
Who backed the Kickstarter campaign? Only 6 days left!!!!
WTF?!?!?! dude i have NO IDEA anyone was doing this !!!!!
Thanks for mentioning it .. I DO NOT BACK KICKSTARTERS !!!! ... but fuck it man the original was THE greatest game EVER .. so am backing $75 for the closed beta
Man I didn’t grow up with this game but I’m a fan of Deus ex and it makes me want to ply this old ass game 😂
I know this is old, but I just wanted to say that if you haven't tried it yet you definitely should. I'd bought it just last year and it's one of favorite games already.
At least Doom 2 is fun.
Jesus, what's up with the narrator? Is that how he talks normally?
are you for real son ... WTF!?!?!?!
Way to come over as a gas giant sized dumbass
