    I love these crafty solutions utilizing old tech, only linux can make this possible. That intro was horrifying though, just how many videos had to go because of this?? Must be frustrating lol. Hoping more videos soon!

      Yeah, it was so frustrating deleting all that work. My theory is that I can remake them better anyway so the loss is only temporary and through the process, I learnt a huge amount about adopting Linux audio into my workflow. Thank goodness for Linux!

    Found out about your channel after you did the MX review. Enjoy your videos. I have a crappy speaker built into the monitor, but I like less clutter. But that audio was the best sounding audio I've ever had come across these cheap speakers.
    Sorry to hear about you having (or wanting) to delete your previous videos. I can see you do a lot of editing and spending time to make quality productions.
    Thank you.

    I had a similar issue, I had to get drivers for old synthesizers running. My solution was so get a thin client pc for 20$ that can run Windows 98 just fine.
    When you don't need drivers, then it's all about Linux and Wine these days. Even a PI is powerful enough to get reaper and a vst or two running.

    Change your sample rate on cadence to 44.1. Since the M1 is so old it obviously isnt going to handle 48. Set the frames to 3 since its a usb interface. Do those to things and you will most likely get 0 Xruns.
    Just a tip. ;-)

    Hi.
    Nice journey to use old PC/laptop for today's work. I like minimal setup, and for simple screen casting + audio captur, I only use FFmpeg. Example
    ffmpeg -video_size 1024x768 -framerate 25 -f x11grab -i :0.0 -f alsa hw:"index_to_audio_capture_dvice" screencast.mkv
    We can fine tune the recording quality with more options and parameters. Remember to set proper mic gain before recording. :)
    Thank you.

      Great. IT has very steep learning curve, but there are many wikis an documentations or hotos on Internet. Once we got it.. it is a bliss. Make a simple shell script to invove the program, and the result will be consistent.
      Use FFmpeg for recording or screen casting and use video editor for editing and post processing.
      Thank you and good luck.

      @Jønâthân Bûsh Thanks for the props! I think as far as music production software goes, we are very lucky that there are so many options at our fingertips these days. To me, what tools one uses always depends on personal preference, aptitude, talent and willingness to learn so it doesn't matter what you use as long as it suits your needs. I'm learning how to use Ardour at the moment because it works well and has extensive support from a passionate community. Cheers!

    • @TheDrunkenAlcoholic

      Antix does'nt use systemd, that why the ram usage was so little

    • @StaempunkTV
      @StaempunkTV  2 года назад +1

      @John Daniels MX is much easier to set up than antiX but that's due more to being new to setting up & theming in antiX. There is the option to apply XFCE as the desktop environment in antiX and that does use a little more RAM so I'm exploring that option but I'm liking the small footprint of IceWM. Then there's the Fluxbox DE which has had extensive development so I'll probably explore that at some point too.

  • @anon_y_mousse
    @anon_y_mousse 2 года назад

    It's pretty cool that you're using a bunch of old hardware and it works perfectly. Amazing that you're using so little RAM on your setup too. I use KDE and from a cold boot and login I'm already at 1.5GB used. Open 5 or 6 tabs in FireFox and I quickly reach 8 to 10 GB and closing FireFox I still see an extra 2.5 used from cold boot. I'll have to look into whether IceWM or Xfce can handle all the features I use with KDE, because my RAM aches. I would also be curious as to how often you reboot, as I aim for at least once a year.

    • @StaempunkTV
      @StaempunkTV  2 года назад

      @Anony Mousse I hear ya! I used to use KDE too but none of my old laptops have enough RAM so I experienced too many sluggish moments. Since switching to the lighter XFCE, I've found I can configure it to my needs very well. I'm quite new to the IceWM desktop environment and I'm keen to explore Fluxbox too so once I've got my head around those, I'll create some videos about them too.

    I am looking forward to your new videos. I notice your clever video production magic. Without chip shortages, you could use a Raspberry Pi for this job. Thankfully I got my best Pis before the prices went insane I have some old single core desktops Either MX -Linux or Anti-X may keep them useful. I have no AC, so I will be using power for fans, not computers this summer. The nice thing is, stuff I learn on the Pis can be used on my old desktops when I can run them this fall. My desktops are not fire breathers but they can be power hogs run 24 /7. In winter, they add heat to an unheated room, which costs me fuel anyway. Thanks for your fine work.

    Ah that really sucks given how much time you put into your videos.
    Also, most of the mics from "gaming" focused companies are usually pretty unimpressive. If you're planning on an upgrade, definitely check out the Samson Q2U. It beats/is exactly similar to any mics in the 130$ range (at ~65$). It also has a USB input if you don't want to deal with XLR.

    I have very recently recorded drums 14 channels at once over firewire using my old retired Dell Pentium 4 (single core) deskrop computer from 2005 with 2 GB RAM under windows XP with low latency monitoring through the DAW (128 samples) using Reaper, so im of course not at all surpriced that your newer computer can record one mic at once. My old Dell was a bit on the edge of what was possible though and i could hardly add even a few EQ plugins to adjust the listening so i caved in and upgraded to a 10 year old Intel I5 with windows 10 that i got cheap which is a monster compared to the Pentium 4 and i could even do full mixes on that one.
    These computers are used at the rehearsal studio and ment for tracking and i mix at home on a slightly more powerful Intel I7. The interface i use is also very old, from 2006 i think so even old computers and interfaces can be great, the ones i have works perfectly for my needs.

      @@StaempunkTV Thank you ! I agree, you dont need the latest stuff. For tracking you dont need much as i have proven in my post and if you dont need to use a lot of the heaviest VST instruments/effect plugins you can do very advanced mixes with many tracks even on computers like my 10 year old ones. We play heavy metal and i even use VST guitar amp and speaker emulations which are quite heavy on the processor.compared to a lot of other effects, i am currently recording and mixing an album using this equipment.

      @StaempunkTV  2 года назад

      I remember when the Mbox2 came out, people were complaining that the Focusrite preamps weren't as good as the ones in the Mbox 1 so I held off from upgrading to the 2. From what I remember, Digidesign had skimped on componentry resulting in preamp humming. Wow, Nuendo from what I remember was pretty cool but I stuck with ProTools because of the Mbox.
