- Tim Weiner discusses his new book, Legacy of Ashes: The History of the CIA. The agency's failures have handed us, in the words of President Eisenhower "a legacy of ashes." Legacy of Ashes is based on more than 50,000 documents, primarily from the archives of the CIA itself, and hundreds of interviews with CIA veterans, including 10 Directors of Central Intelligence. Tim Weiner is a reporter for The New York Times. He has written on American intelligence for 20 years, and won the Pulitzer Prize for his work on secret national security programs. He has traveled to Afghanistan and other nations to investigate CIA covert operations firsthand. This is his third book.

I could listen to these oral history lectures all day. So very interesting. Tim is a great speaker.

A great book.
To me, an alternative history of the twentieth century seen though the influence and machinations of the CIA and those in power. Required reading for anyone who wants a genuine understanding of the post war era and the current policy agenda.
The video is from 2008 and much has changed since then. Still a fascinating analysis.
As to weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, I was at a conference in early 2000 with the last weapons inspectors to visit Iraq. What I gleamed was that basically everything had been found and decommissioned. The only sticking point was Saddam's refusal to allow inspectors into a few sites that had already been decommissioned. The weapon's inspectors I spoke to were at a loss for this refusal as it would have lifted a lot of the sanctions in place at the time.
Colin Powell and the whole intelligence community really dropped the ball in their analysis in the lead up to the 2003 invasion.

The comment about the generational commitments of the 19th century British intelligence community and the need for a CIA University, or at least better recruitment and training of our intelligence personnel (at young ages) is the most spot on advice in this entire video.
The CIA have a University, several in fact. It's well documented that they heavily recruit on college campuses, and have run operations from them. Stanford and Harvard come to mind easily. Factor in DARPA, the Rand Corporation and many other NGOs that are connected to academia. The CIA is entrenched in many institutions across many levels of society.
I'm not trying to be mean and I know this necessity for what you do. When you do the same things these evil demonic governments do in the world and we do it better than they do (what does that make us)

Maybe but could you tell me one thing that the CIA has done over the last 60 years or so that has really made us better off.
John Kiriaku(spelling?) recommended this book. Maybe there's something useful in it. I find this presentation to be a sales pitch for however is in power and in defence of the CIA.
