I rented a hybrid Corolla once when my car was being repaired and that thing would not get to the end of the street without turning it's ICE on.

People get that fable wrong. The reason the tortoise won is because the hare stopped and went to sleep. Ie: he became complacent. Tesla is not complacent. Elon has even said that the pace of innovation is the most important thing at Tesla.

@@darylfoster7944 CT is a commercial failure so not good for the shareholder. If you don't believe me just look what Elon M. said about it. Model 2 should have been ready begin 2024 so a strategic blunder. Megapack will not offset anything in 2024. So yes 2024 is a lost year for the shareholder. Maybe Tesla can show some progress at the end of the year if you want to keep your hopes up high.

@@darylfoster7944 The truth is I paid $105 and sold at 160 and indeed if I were greedy and waited a bit longer I could have sold them for 200. So I made a nice profit but totally out now.

James May of Top Gear said recently in an interview regarding EVs: "People don't have range anxiety, they have charging anxiety." So many still think that they need to rely on stations to charge when in reality you're charging while you sleep, saving time and money. When you do travel, charging adds maybe an extra hour to the trip but saves a disproportionate amount of money in fuel. The amount of time saved not filling at the pump weekly far outweighs the time charging on trips. If you commute 200 miles or less a day and return home (99% of people) then an EV will save you time and money.
Everything has its trade-offs. Sometimes you must get back on the road as fast as possible. So we're still not there with the battery technology and charging, but the good thing is there's decent progress. We'll have to wait and see how long it takes until we get parity between refueling vs charging.

Gordon meant to say that hybrids are better for legacy carmakers and their shareholders. Not better for humanity, not better for customers quality of life, not better price wise than EV. I have a hybrid F-150 Powerboost that cost me 100k CAD$. It's still have all the flaws of the ICE and still cost a lot in gasoline with 23.5 mpg efficiency. I ordered the Cybertruck which will cost me not more than my hybrid with much more tech and fun and safety.

Amazing info - my Tesla LFP m3 battery has no degradation after almost a year - I ONLY trickle charge. Have never super charged even once. L2 charging only a couple times.
I have 3% in 35000 km on my nca... I give a shit about the Battery. Tesla batteries are superior regarded to long term degradation. My PSA battery had 6% after 6000km!
Yeah I want a car that has a motor that is too small and a battery that is too small, please sign me up.

I live in Norway. Car retailers are stopping the sales of ICE cars.
Like 80% of new cars sold are electric and will soon be 100% because ICE cars wont be sold.
EVs are not going away in Norway at least. Most popular car here is a Tesla.

Agree the dual power systems don't make sense (for most), however, I view it as consumer dipping their toe into the water. I suspect their next cars will be electric.
The question is, how long are today's hybrid buyers going to hold onto their car before making another purchase?
My first interpretation was Tesla as the steadily moving turtle and Wall Street (aka Gordon and Ross) as the foolish hares. The other one works as well...
Regarding VHS versus Betamax: Betamax was by far the best system but it had one major problem in that early cassettes had a maximum running time of 90 minutes, so a normal feature film would not fit on one cassette. VHS though came out with a 120 minute cassette, quickly followed by a 180 minute cassette. The UK company 'Magentic-Video' sold VHS in a 3:1 ratio over Betamax, with Betamax sales falling off to almost zero within just a few months. One reason for this was that VHS was used as the format for 'pirate' video of almost any feature film and of course, 'adult' entertainment. So whilst VHS systems were rapidly adapted, Sony and their Betamax fell way behind. Sony though simply moved across to the broadcast market where they became No. 1 - a similar move was tried by the VHS format and it (MII format) was a total disaster. Thames Television adopted the MII format over the Betacam SP and learnt the hardway that engineering and technology are very unforgiving if you get it wrong. RIP Hybrids.
Hey man, love what you do but you need come up with some better analogy’s. Betamax was better than vhs in every way, it failed because Sony would not share the IP. VHS was basically open source. Also hybrids do make sense in geographical areas that are under serviced with respect to chargers. Electric will win in the end though:)

I have owned a 2019 Model 3 for almost 5 years and I have never, not once, had range anxiety. That is a non issue, it was the Nissan Leaf that caused RA due to the small penis sized battery it had and how slow it charged, those days are long dong gone.
To be honest, I've got a four runner and a model three I love them both but for separate reasons. I feel like If tesla can tackle the off road market for around 60k I don't think toyota will have a niche market anymore since the cybertruck looks like a better buy than a tundra rn.

The biggest problem with hybrids is they rely on a non-renewable resource that is being exhausted! By definition that makes them a dead-end technology.
The reason why these OEMs pull back is because TESLA’S price war has killed them they no longer have the ability to make and sell their ev’s without a massive loss that threatens their existing business model
Even before Tesla's price cuts, they still couldn't sell a profitable EV. They could easily absorb the EV losses in their ICE profits, but then their stock would take a hit for 3-5 years, and the shareholders would be mad.

What Gordon didn’t say was that PHEVs pollute 75% that of ICE vehicles, and Tesla quotes 12% battery degradation per 200k miles. He also doesn’t not talk about total cost of ownership for EVs being less, or that EVs lasting 2x-3x longer than ICE. That’s because of the number of moving parts EVs vs ICE is ~20 vs ~2000, and EV parts are much more reliable.

Hyvrids are the niche product that will go away along with ICE vehicle's. When better batteries become available the batteries can be rplaced. Tires will also get cheaper with volume manufacturing and competition.
As the second or third car in the garage, an EV is great. To expect EVs will replace ICE mid term is not realistic. Same as microwave ovens did not replace stoves.
Gordon should buy a pair of shorts.

I think all car manufacturers are missing the ideal, by like 50% in all aspects! It is possible to produce a $12000 full sized suv! Maybe even half that price, In a fraction of the time and space using Teslas single casting tech.

Hybrids cost less to manufacture given the smaller battery. As battery cost drops, EVs will get the price advantage.

hybrids catch fire THE MOST OFTEN , having been built by companies who are clueless about hv battery manufactuing and these batteries every bit as dangerous as a larger on in a pure EV.
