I'm pretty sure they do more than enough research on the items before filming the episodes. It's hard to believe they would determine they're not them just by quickly examining them. That's not how appraisals work.
Unfortunately without provenance it's unlikely that a newly found tin type will ever be accepted as the real deal. There have been photos in recent years that have been matched by computer facial recognition to the one famous Billy the Kid tin type, but since it isn't possible to trace their ownership, they aren't generally accepted as authentic Billy the Kid pictures - just really old pictures of some unidentified dude. That said, I know this is a tv show, but expecting the museum guy to just walk in and make a positive identification with the naked eye is pretty laughable.
The expert could be right, but only giving a one minute examination of possible authentic photos is ridiculous. You need several experts examining them over a period of time. Any pictures were done also at different time periods of their lives.
Everybody's ears are lined up with their eyes, the person on the photo had his head tilted down, that's why they apear higher than the eyes.I cannot believe the 'expert' said that.
Different head positions in a photo will make the ears appear higher or lower as compared to the eyes. He can't say for sure just by looking at the photos. This guy needs REAL experts who will use computer software to tell if they may or may not be real.
Many of the comments talk about using facial recognition software to examine the photos further, but I think this is a case where it will be almost impossible to prove the photos are of the famous outlaws. The software could probably rule out a match if the eyes, ears, etc. didn't match, but even if they did match, you still just could have a couple of dudes that look like the James brothers. There is probably not enough photographic evidence to match the photos beyond a doubt. Having said that, what are the chances these are photos of the James brothers? Very slim, for sure, no way this guy is ever seeing a big payday, unfortunately for him.

Other areas are affected as well.

Pawn Stars IS THE comedy show winner of this generation!!!
these pic's are of a different time frame prob. late 1800's to 1905 an a couple look like u.s. marshall's one does seem to be of Frank/Jesse but hard to prove...check the straw hats some wore..
Every new video, I try to guess who the expert in this one is, I haven’t watched this one yet, but it’s either gonna be mark, or a special one time appearance expert
"Marc knows what he's talking about"
Also Marc "I don't think it is"
It's ridiculous to say that the nose and ears don't change over time. A single punch can change the shape.of your nose and I'm guessing those 2 got in a few fights in their time.
Jesse died at age 35. You are right that a broke nose would change the shape but he didn't live long enough for age alone to change his face.
"Brb let me call a buddy of mine, Robert Ford"
The authenticator is just trying to protect his own interest. If the photos are real the value of his James Gang photos becomes less valuable.
The old man Rick called him to check out the Jesse James pictures, he doesn't know what he was doing 😭.
Yes that customer will prove that his photographs are real & that's why no one ever heard from him again.
If you look up known photos of Jesse James (see the Wikipedia entry for example), the guy who tried to sell the photos looks a lot like him (deep set eyes, high forehead, light colored eyes, ears, head shape)!
Jesse and Frank were also members of the Knights of the Golden Circle, a wide-spread organization dedicated to financing a new Confederacy. That's why so many stashes still remain.
$59,950 story $50 worth of photos
Guy is crazy to think they were really photos of the James gang
