    I recently Reset both my iPad and a friend’s iPhone and then restored them from iCloud backups and this solved severe memory problems for both of us. Neither device had enough free space to download and install iOS updates before the reset. The iPad after restoring had about 30% free space and the iPhone over 50%. I’ve no idea what gremlins were hiding on the devices, but nothing else would free up much space.

    Also for system data, I would add Telegram, all videos, photos, and audios are "cached" into the system data. It took me a while but I was able to find where that 40 GB of system data was coming from.

    How do you get your iPhone messages to move to the iCloud instead of taking up space on the phone? I have it turned on for messages to be moved to the iCloud yet messages still take up gigs of space. Don’t want to delete as there are a lot of photos in the messages that I want to keep.

    To be fair you should really mention to people that backing up photos to iCloud or any other cloud storage is way safer than storing all your photos on a physical device as if the device is lost damaged etc you loose your photos. Great video though

    Hi great video & thank you for making it clearer for me. I have an iPhone 13Pro and have iCloud which I pay for. My iCloud is full as I use my phone for work, so I have a lot of photos and videos to use for work reference. I don’t want to get rid of any photos/videos because I need them. Would you have a suggestion for me please? I believe & heard that I could connect a portable ssd external hard drive to my phone and download & back up my photos and videos - that way freeing up some storage space. Is that possible to do? Many thanks 😊

      The only way I've seen this work is through creating Shared albums. Content uploaded to a shared album can then be deleted from your own camera roll, but would still exist within the shared album. You could try that - you just wouldn't actually 'share' the album with anyone, you'd just use it for yourself.

    • @UkeCan1
      @UkeCan1 2 года назад +1

      What I finally did was to disconnect my overfull iPad from iCloud photos, and then say yes when it asks if you want to remove the photos from the device. For some reason that did not free up *all* the storage space accounted to photos, but it cleared enough to be able to run an update.
      The photos all remain in the cloud and on any devices that are still connected to iCloud photos.
      It's infuriating that Apple hasn't designed in a smarter default behavior around how many photos it retains locally when your device is getting full. I thought that was the point of iCloud - that you could keep all those photos in the cloud without them having to take up all that space on each device.
      You would think there would at least be an option for that behaviour, but no - it defaults to filling all available space with photos until it chokes itself, and disconnecting the photos from iCloud is the only fix. (And afterward it will insist on repeatedly notify you to connect the photos to iCloud to save space!)

    • @dlucey123
      @dlucey123 2 года назад +2

      The problem with iCloud is that with the exception of the backup, all data in iCloud is synced to your device. Ie if you keep it turned on and delete content on your phone it will also delete it on the cloud so it’s not a proper backup service.
      I haven’t tested your workaround but I expect Apple is nudging you to run out of storage and buy a new iPhone.
      I really like Google Photos because it gives you the option to delete photos from your device that you have backed up to their cloud service. It’s also easier to download a copy of your data uploaded to Google to a computer if you don’t want to rely on cloud services

    • @UkeCan1
      @UkeCan1 2 года назад +1

      @@dlucey123 What you're saying is not 100% correct. Not all content is downloaded to all devices unless you access it. But the default behavior is beyond stupid for low-capacity devices. It downloads way too much for the capacity of the device, and there are no options to fix that other than to disconnect the photos from iCloud altogether. And then for some reason, the device still doesn't release all the photo storage, even after it deletes all the photos. Apparently the only way to reclaim that space is to wipe the device and do a complete restore. The first problem is a terribly designed "feature", the second appears to be an outright bug ... or as you say, planned sabotage on the part of Apple.

      All this conversation in this comment thread is very helpful to me. Thank you everyone. I have never used or turned on iCloud photos. I have only just used iCloud Drive. That way I can send my photos from my iPhone to the Files app which is iCloud Drive and then access to organize those photos or videos whether I'm on my windows PC or my 2021 MacBook Pro, which I am still learning, as never had a Mac until now. I am just now learning to use the iCloud photos app on my Mac to import from my phone to get photos and videos off my iPhone to then organize on my Mac. I'll have to search Proper Honest Tech as I think he has other helpful videos on using iCloud photos and organizing photos.

    So if I understood correctly (on the subject of photos and videos) as long as you have enough space on iCloud you can virtually have as many photos as you wish? Figuratively, let's say you have a 64gb iPhone but have 70gb worth of photos uploaded over time to iCloud, with the optimized photo setting, is that correct?

    Can someone help me. Before i had 5GB storage(default), and my iCloud backup was turned off and also iCloud photos. I was getting emails because my 5gb storage was not full. One day I subscribed for iCloud monthly plan and turn on the backups and iCloud photo and i took all the backups and turned off the iCloud backup and iCloud photos and i canceled the subscription plan. After cancellation i downgraded to 5gb storage same as before but the problem is now its showing full storage, and now I cannot get an email on iphone. Great video lots of tips. I’d add two things about resetting your device. First is to reset a device using finder or iTunes because that will wipe the operating system, everything else and it will download a clean copy of your OS. Erasing via your phone skips the re installation of OS which can help free up a device. Second is to sign out of iCloud before erasing it to avoid activation lock.
