Excellent speech of info Joel ,I really like when you use samples too. I loved all your reasons and I was very hesitant at the beginning . I have decided to trust this now after hearing your speech .thank you so much 👍😀
You're very welcome @haylena1 In the grand scheme of things, Apple's iCloud is no different than how Google and Microsoft's Cloud works. Hi @Virginia Matthews! Well for sure not trying to sell anything, but once you start using iCloud it does seem as though users are eventually tied into paying for it! My question for you would be, what kind of content are you trying to get off of iCloud and clean up? Content off a mobile device, computer, or iCloud in general? I have in my notes to do a video of Not using iCloud in the future, but I think the service of iCloud overall is more for convenience if anything as you're still able to almost do most things without paying for more storage.
I only have one apple device which a mac and it is full on i cloud storage. IN THIS CASE SHOULD I GET MORE STORAGE BECAUSE IN THE FUTURE I MIGHT GET A NEW APPLE DEVICE.
I think it is irresponsible of you not to mention that there are alternatives to iCloud besides other cloud services. For example, backups of ios devices can be saved on a computer rather than in iCloud by simply plugging in a cable and syncing, which automatically creates a backup. Also, everyone does not need to have their entire photo library available on every device at all times, and they can sync to their ios devices only those items, folders, or albums that they choose. Same with music. Moreover, if they are worried about how much storage space their photo library is taking up on their computer, they can simply store the library on an external hard drive, which are very inexpensive these days. Same for music library. This video sounds like an ad for selling cloud storage space, when there are other alternatives..
Hi @David H.! So you I absolutely agree and I hear your concerns, but this video was created with the intent of people who only have an iPhone or maybe an iPad. It doesn't make sense to assume that everyone has a computer or external drive, therefore some of your solutions and suggestions would be irrelevant. I have made some other videos that do discuss such topics as backing up to a computer where you don't have to use iCloud. How to BACKUP your iPHONE or iPAD using iTunes, Finder and iCloud! - STEP BY STEP GUIDE ruclips.net/video/Uz7zVGEkPmE/видео.html How to STOP using iCLOUD! - Guide to TURNING OFF iCloud syncing on your Apple device! ruclips.net/video/gWF-3XSqYyk/видео.html Furthermore, I could agree that not everyone needs all of their photos on all of their devices, however for me, I personally enjoy it. It automatically creates memories based off older photos I don't look at often, it also gives me the convenience of it syncing to my Mac, which honestly is a giant time saver. Also all cloud backup solutions are not the same and don't offer the identical features, so therefore, yes iCloud is a great solution for users Apple Devices. And if someone was an Android or Pixel user, I would be recommending they use Google Drive and all things Google as it fits better into that eco system. Hope that helps clarify! Thanks for the great conversation and I appreciate you watching!
Yes also we don’t spend enough time deleting photos and videos that we don’t need and people just kind of hoard. Which is basically where I’m at right now thanks for the other options⚡️⚡️ reminders David.
Photo stream provided a great way to keep iCloud photo sync turned off while using photo stream to sync a select number of chosen photos across devices. Now that photo stream is going away, do you know of a way to achieve the same result for free?
Photo stream was a great feature that allowed to only sync the past 30 days to a device if wanted. It's too bad Apple has chosen to finally get rid of it completely. Unfortunately @aldenhopkins, I do not have a free suggestion to replace this feature. Every major cloud service seems to sync all photo/video content both ways to any device signed in with the same account. Thanks so much for watching! I like your breakdown of icloud storage. Very informative. I am on the 200GB family storage plan, but I have over 10,000 photos and over 2,000 videos. I know I'm not near full in icloud, but I want to off-load or archive at least half of them onto my Windows PC. What would be my best option? Thanks Joel!
Great question @123bimfi! Things to consider... If you're planning on offloading half of the photos from iCloud Photos, that means that you need to delete them out of iCloud Photos, which means that they will be removed from all devices that you're signed in within iCloud and syncing with. You could approach this a couple different ways (depending if you have a Mac also) End goal is to export the photos from Apple Photos or export from photos on Windows (assuming you're syncing the iCloud Photo Library with iCloud) to a folder or location that is not within the location that Apple iCloud Photos is syncing to. I have a couple videos related to above that should help: iCloud for Windows 11 - How to INSTALL & SYNC your APPLE DEVICES to your WINDOWS PC WIRELESSLY! ruclips.net/video/By46jC9unzg/видео.html EXPORTING your Apple Photo files on your MAC - EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW! ruclips.net/video/aiIiFePcRy4/видео.html How to TRANSFER PHOTOS from an iPhone or iPad to a Mac or Windows Computer ruclips.net/video/nRDmo6xFez4/видео.html The video below also talks about turning off iCloud Photos altogether or on selective devices. I understand the value of Icloud as backup and synchronization. But I have another purpose for "cloud" storage from some company. I want to have minimal photos on my phone, bascially favorites, or things I intend to send someone soon. After that, I want them permanently stored somewhere, but don't need my phone to have all the storage. Icloud doesn't work for that, because if I delete from phone it is deleted from everywhere, so no good. I am considering external hard drive for my 'photo storage" but also want something safely offsite in a cloud somewhere. Please, Joel, what do you suggest? Thanks!
Great question @Mar FromWI! My first instinct would be to copy the photos/files to a computer and then delete from your iPhone when done. You could use a flash drive that you could connect directly to your iPhone. Check out the following item below if you haven't already: SanDisk 128GB iXpand Flash Drive Go for iPhone amzn.to/3RtfMRZ I actually have a video that talks about using this that I'll link below for reference: How to BACKUP iCLOUD PHOTOS! Options for your Mac, iPhone and iPad! Cloud or No Cloud! ruclips.net/video/pWZZlYU62ts/видео.html As far as using another cloud, it could be a possibility. iCloud Photos certainly would not work. However there is a feature in Google Photos that when a photo is taken on your iPhone, it syncs to Google Photos, and then there's a setting within Google Photos to delete the photo from your iPhone and the photo will still reside within Google Photos. You may still need to purchase Google Storage depending on how much content you have, but it could work. I have another video below that I believe reference that setting that I'll link below: iCloud vs Google vs Microsoft - PHOTO CLOUD COMPARISON - How your PHOTOS interact in "THE CLOUD" ruclips.net/video/UFF6Vwp12hQ/видео.html Thank you for your continued support! Great question @Graeme Craft! I did mention that and since then Apple has kinda back tracked...however it's still possible, but it's very limited. Apple made a change with the Apple ID's where you could use a different Apple ID with iCloud and then another Apple ID for Media & purchases. If I navigate to the following on my iPhone: (you may or may not see this depending on what plan you're on) Settings > Apple ID > Subscriptions > Apple One > Manage iCloud+ I can choose to associate my Apple ID with different accounts. This essentially lets you buy the 2TB plan for not only your iCloud Account, but also a family shared account. But the biggest problem that defeats the whole purpose is that it doesn't join the storage together. So Apple at first said this was a feature, but now I can't find it anywhere where the mention it. I reached out to their support about this and confirmed that each account can have 2TB, but it does not join together collectively. Which in my opinion, is stupid. So for the moment I don't even recommend going down this path and I really hoping that Apple offers larger storage options in the future! I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! Hi @Nuevo! Unfortunately as far as what I know, Apple doesn't offer a monthly option for iCloud services. If you were to stop paying for your storage, you would have 30 days to download all of your content locally to a device. I will link an Apple Support article below that speaks to this that may be helpful. Downgrade or cancel your iCloud+ plan support.apple.com/en-us/HT207594 Archive or make copies of the information you store in iCloud support.apple.com/en-us/HT204055 I hope that helps! Wonderful!!!! I will continue to use iCloud for storage iPhone s as of iPad. I now need to delete Google Photos- - how do I do this without effecting iPhone. Thanks !! Love your videos
Well…. You don’t really need more iCloud storage. BUT the whole concept of the apple ecosystem kind of depends on using iCloud. And there is nothing wrong with it! Automatic backups, photos taken instantly everywhere etc is fantastic, AND added storage isn’t expensive either! Apple is really not over charging you for iCloud, now as soon as you pay for any upgraded plan you also get iCloud+ which offers several useful features at no extra cost. Private relay, hide my email, custom email domain and family sharing are all great! If you own more than one Apple device, get the most out of them, cause they cost a pretty penny, and splurge for iCloud+!
Absolutely @driver288! For me personally I do take a tons of photos and videos, so slowly approaching the 2TB limit. So I do feel there is a need to eventually offer more storage, but you're 100% right. Lots of great features and benefits to having iCloud+ Thanks so much for watching! What I do is If you have a computer connect your phone to it open folder to see photos create new photos highlight them drag them to the folder and drop them in and there saved forever. I haven’t used iCloud storage for almost 2 years doing that method.
Very true @Otter Pond Gaming! There are certainly different ways to transfer photos to a different location so that if you turned off iCloud Photos, you can free up space physically on your device, but assuming that iCloud Photos is turned off, then the photos themselves are not being synced to iCloud anyways and therefore wouldn't be taking up space. I have another video that walks though different options to transfer photos just like you're doing! i have 2TB icloud. i am not in US so i can not buy more than 2 tb. iCloud is full. i have 4k movies and pictures from iphone 13pro. and it's normal to have full 2tb with iphone 13pro who does big pictures and movies.. :( what should i do? can I atomathicaly move all icloud and iphone pictures on an external drive? apple does not give option for more than 2tb and this is crazy.
I have the same problem = more than 2TB needed and Apple is unwilling to provide/sell multiples of 2TB iCloud? Why? Or what is a good solution? Ext.HDD or pCloud? Or? Or some other alternative?
Hey Joel thank you for your videos. I backed up my photos and videos from my iMac to an external HD and now I can't get them from my HD to my Mac book. There are many videos on how to back up but none that I can find on how to move from back up. would appreciate any help
Hi @Richard Barry! A few questions to clarify your workflow... When you say you backed up your photos and videos from your iMac to external, how did you do that? Did you use Time Machine, did you just manually drag the photos and videos there? Also are the photos and videos individual files/folders, or are they in Photo Libraries and iMovie Libraries? Usually whenever you drag something to an external, it's making a copy of it, so the files/folders would still be locally on your Mac. Did you delete them after you copied? I hope to help and look forward to talking with you! I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! If you haven’t already, please support me by subscribing! I’ve used iCloud backup for a couple years now. Right after I did it I questioned the wisdom of doing so but I continued. My previous Mac got too slow for the genealogy stuff I do so I upgraded the Mac. I used iCloud to restore all my data to the new Mac. Everything I needed was restored including family trees. All I needed to do was download the genealogy software and I was up and running in less than a day. I do not, however, use Apple Music so all my music had to be transferred via a USB drive. It was probably not the way an experienced Apple user would do but for my lack of knowledge of Macs it worked out for me. Easy Peasy.

Also how do I turn off google drive for my photos? I have all apple products and I’ve looked everyone but I can’t stop this google drive from downloading my photoa
It’s not the fee. It’s lack of control. Someone else is in control of my access to my data. The standard procedure for backup fifteen years ago are complicated by having to back out of iCloud and learning how to backup on a home computer. I did it when it was all we had. Now (I was told there was no other option when I brought my phone) have to learn something I never wanted before I can take matters into my own hands.
Hi @rogermiller2159! If I may ask, what data of yours do you not have control over? iCloud itself is not required to be used if you own an Apple device. Is it more convenient and have some benefits, sure, but it is not a requirement. Backing up or transferring information locally to a computer has always been an option and still is. Could be more difficult for users with only an iPhone or iPad, but you can still connect an external drive to those devices too. I can certainly relate to some of this cloud stuff to be more complicated, but things change so quickly with technology. THANK YOU so much for watching! It is appreciated more than you know! @@Learnwithjoel I’m 65 Keeping up with technology is a constant challenge. Now I am at the age where I just do not want to keep up. I used to have two desktop computers and a dell pocket PC. The ppc synced between the desktops and everything worked smoothly. That seems quaint now. I am not driven to stay current anymore but I love music and studying on my own. I guess I’m rambling. Anyone offering to make my life easier is only taking the burden from me. What I need from a computer changed when I became retired.
You didn’t mention the Time Capsule. I’ve been syncing iPhone and iPad to my MacBook, then backup to my TC. Been doing this for about 13 years. Occasionally I will backup to my 50gb iCloud.
Great observation @Ross J! I often don't mention Time Capsule as it's hardware that Apple no longer makes and isn't supported by Apple, so I stay away if possible. This video wasn't really intended about backing up if your storage was full, it's more so of understanding why it could be full and then looking at the options of what to do. My iCloud storage is full for weeks now and no matter what I do it won’t resolve so idk if I should get a new phone or buy those ICloud plus thing I don’t really wanna spend money.
Hi, I have an Apple iPad 8th generation and my ipad storage is full, so I now have 2 TB of iCloud, and now that’s also full, so I was wondering how to download a copy of my whole iCloud, all the other apps too and not just photos, to the hard drive, and then delete everything from iCloud. Is that possible to copy all my stuff in iCloud onto a hard drive, and how do I do it?
I have had my iPhone 12 stolen from me, but I don't know what to do to get it back from the iCloud because I had to change my password for my account so I need a little bit of help with my password and my username for my account All my time with the internet
I just started to listen to again and had a question. I noticed on iCloud photos that all your photos have a name of IMGand a number.in my world of photo storage, i like to place a name on each photo. Dates mean nothing too me but a name on each photo is much more beneficial too me. Can iCloud allow me to do it my way. Thank you Irwin Spector. Microsoft one allows it by name just got finished renaming over 30000
Hi @Irwin Spector! Yes, the majority of my photos are labeled with something like 305874.IMG. This is because that is what the camera that took the photo labels it. I do like that OneDrive on the iPhone and iPad allow you to rename photos individually. You can do something similar within Apple Photos on an iPhone/iPad to change the caption, but it's not the same. If you have a Mac, you can change the name of files and in return that would sync to iCloud Photos, but if you don't, that will do you no good. Apple for sure needs some improvement in some areas and this is one of them. I'm impressed you renamed that many photos! Well done! I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! JOEL, I have a Procreate issue on My IPAD...It appears that it was saving files to the DEVICE and my device is full...For whatever reason, the IPAD uninstalled Procreate app. I cannot reinstall the app as there's not enough storage on the device! (due to procreate files I assume) Is there a way to move device files to the cloud manually so i can re-install my procreate and access all my art? Then delete the device files? Ugh! Help! Thanks! Kerry
Hey @Cleveland Montgomery! Yeah, so the really nice thing about actually having enough iCloud storage is that let's say you plan to upgrade and get a new phone today. The moment you sign in with your iCloud account at the setup menu when you turn it on, it will start to sync all of you photos, contacts, calendars, text messages and anything you had turned on for syncing. If you had iCloud backup turned on and enabled, you could make your new iPhone look identical to your current one very easily. So it's really all about convenience! Hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! I appreciate it!

I am an Android user, however at times I do use iPhone and in iCloud settings I turn off photos backup and most other unneeded stuff. My backup may range from 350 to 500MB. My favorite option is using iTunes and backing up locally on my PC. One of my friends was surprised when her phone says that it is out of storage, I told her it is the iCloud as she has here photos/videos backed up.
I have the 200 gb plan and I am at 195 gb used but over half is being used by Documents. What can I do with that? Do I have something turned on that I need to turn off?

What I still don’t understand is: On my iMac in my iCloud Drive, I have a folder named documents taking up 74gb. I don’t want to back that up. If I delete that folder in iCloud Drive, is it being deleted from my iMac, too? Or do I have to move the folder from my iCloud Drive to my desktop?

This is prob a stupid question… however, how do I download photos to my computer if my i cloud is shut off? I have plugged my phone in to my computer and it’s not working.
Thank you so much for explaining in detail regarding iCloud. And backing up! Can you see what’s in the iCloud? I have a smaller iPad would like to see if a video is in there and whatever else. Plus if you delete pictures or screenshot pictures if you delete them from your iPad will that give you back your space? I did that with games and photos and still the storage sign keeps popping up that my iPad is full? Ok, I will look into what you showed on your video to see if my old mini iPad can live again ( like trying to get whatever is on it, if that makes any sense). I bought a device two years ago to download my photos from the mini iPad, did not work out well. Ok, if possible open to ideas, but I will check out what you said even down to paying the small fee each month. Thanks again.
How does backup work when using iCloud? Presently, I use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy every file on my hard drive to a backup drive every couple of weeks. My co-worker uses a cloud backup service (I think BackBlaze). Both of these methods back up everything on a local hard drive. If some of my files are in iCloud and some are on my local hard drive (and this is constantly changing based on whether the file was recently used) then how does one back up all the files? I would be a bit nervous having only a single copy of my files, even though I trust that Apple backs up iCloud content regularly.
Hi @Tom Gifford! So that is a fantastic question! In my opinion, iCloud Backup is very deceiving as most people think it backs up 100% of everything and it really doesn't! I think it's important to step back and clarify what content we're expecting/wanting to be backed up. That piece is crucial in identifying and it also can be different per user. Here's what I would recommend. Sync all content from one Mac with iCloud. Photos, messages, iCloud Drive, pretty much everything so that it's all downloading local info, and then use Time Machine to backup the Mac. This is a good solution that doesn't require a monthly fee to go to another cloud solution, but BackBlaze and Carbon Copy are also great alternatives! I would for sure do this if you're using iCloud Photos as when you turn that on, it's not technically in your iCloud Backup! Hope that helps a little! Stay tuned for some upcoming videos as i'm currently working on some in regards to backup of iCloud and such! Thanks for watching and the continued support!
Hey @Emer Mc Laughlin! So that's a loaded question... :-) What type of email are you using? What device is it on? What app are you using on that device? There could be a ton of different reasons why emails may not be coming in, but I would need a bit more information to help! Let me know! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video. Question - What do you do if you are already paying for the 2tb of iCloud storage and the storage is full of photos and videos? Let’s say you have cleared up the backups, duplicate photos etc and it’s still full. What is the next best step?
Hey @Charlotte Amber - Living Kind! In my opinion Apple really needs to step up their cloud options. I have actually talked to their support a handful of times and they max out at 2TB. I'm hoping that they will increase it, but I won't hold my breath. Their solution is to delete files or move them off of iCloud if you reach the 2TB threshold. Not the best answer if you ask me. I too will someday reach this hurdle and honestly at that point if they don't offer any more storage, I will slowly migrate to Amazon Photos. Amazon Photos App is actually really nice and they have unlimited RAW photo storage included with their Amazon Prime account. The downfall though is that they only give you 5GB of video storage and then you have to pay, but it's not too bad of pricing compared to competitors. So long story short, check out Amazon Photos if you haven't already! I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! If you haven’t already, please support me by subscribing! Every couple years I transfer all my pics to a thumb drive. First move all the pics from your phone to the computer. Get an 8gb or more thumb drive and plug into the computer and just transfer that pic folder to the thumb drive. Done deal. Your pics are now saved forever and your cloud has about 90% more space.
So glad I found you…great info! Question, my storage is mostly taken up by back ups. I’m so confused!? What does that mean. How can I free up iCloud space?
Great question @Holly Whitelow! Even though that sounds like a simple question, it really is much bigger than that. They key is to understand what is actually taking up space in iCloud, determine what is important to you and then either delete content from iCloud to free up space or add more storage to accommodate. iCloud Backups, Photos/Videos and iMessages are often the biggest culprits for taking up space. You can always safely delete an iCloud Backup and it will recreate one. I will link a handful of videos below that relate to iCloud that will explain the concept and use of it further in depth that I would recommend to watch: iCLOUD BACKUPS - WHAT you NEED TO KNOW when it comes to backing up PHOTOS, iPHONES and your devices! ruclips.net/video/7ep9pREplD8/видео.html What is iCLOUD?! - Complete UNDERSTANDING of what Apple iCloud's service actually is! ruclips.net/video/oz6o0zPREFo/видео.html Understanding iCLOUD PHOTOS - Syncing iPhones, iPads, and Apple Computers IN-DEPTH ruclips.net/video/59Yjdbh1Q88/видео.html Understanding iCloud Syncing - BEGINNERS GUIDE 101 ruclips.net/video/ARyhXMvu99A/видео.html I hope this helps! Do you work for Apple or something!! How about something useful like if it’s possible to have part or your pictures saved to you phone and the other half on on the cloud
It depends on how much documents, photos, videos , etc. you usually take. If your always taking photos and using documents all the time like me and it’s just you the 2.99$ is the way to go. If you have more than just your phone connected or sharing the storage with your family the 9.99 plan won’t disappoint. Also you can always change the plan you want so if you think you don’t need all the 2TB you can downplan to the 2.99$ deal
Hi @Klodion Shehu! I would mimic what @Mark Lopez has to say! It does depend on how much content you have and your usage. The nice thing is, as he said, you can always downgrade to a different plan, or just slowly upgrade from the 99¢ to the $2.99 when/if you get full. I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! Hi @John Pomeroy! I understand your frustration...Google just updated their storage plans up to a 5TB option! Apple has been behind the competitors when it comes to the cloud stuff in my opinion. As with any cloud service; iCloud, Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, DropBox....you will eventually run out of space if you never get rid of anything. So first thing is to figure out what is actually taking up space in your iCloud Storage. You can view it in your Settings either on your Mac, iPhone or iPad. It will be located in the iCloud section and look for "Manage Storage". You can also visit www.icloud.com and look at your storage there and I will also link an Apple Support article below that shows how to manage storage. Manage your iCloud storage support.apple.com/en-us/HT204247 Do you have a Mac? Are you syncing the Desktop & Documents Folders? If so, many users including myself will often save files to those two locations instead of filing them someplace else and everything in those two locations will sync to iCloud and take up storage, if you have this turned on for a mac. There's really no good solution to this aside from managing what files you're keeping in iCloud and prioritizing what you want in there. Me personally it's Pictures, so that's primarily what I keep there, and I too will cross this bridge soon as I will eventually it the 2TB threshold. May not be the solution you're looking for, but I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! If you haven’t already, please support me by subscribing! @@Learnwithjoel I have subscribed. Do you have a video on how to break up one large photo library into a few smaller ones & back them up to external hard drives & switch between them easily? That would be helpful. Thanks!!
Great video.I pay the $3/mo no issue. Would you do a video on strategies for an iCloud at this level of storage (200 G) with a phone of far more storage OR is there no point to having local iPhone storage greater than you're willing to pay Apple for iCloud storage. Because I have ONLY one device (my phone), so no syncing, no family to share). $10/mo is too much for this state. To me, it's worth moving older photos to archive on a separate external drive. I need hacks to cleanup my iCloud photos and I was happy to learn that delete a photo on my iphone / removes it from Icloud (30 days later); I was under the impression I had to delete from iCloud.
@@Learnwithjoel my storage is full. I have deleted hundreds of pictures and files. Someone said they are in the wastebasket until you empty it. And it’s on the iCloud. I don’t know how to access the iCloud - To get to the wastebasket and empty it. I have some pictures that show a small cloud in the corner. I’m assuming that picture is stored in the cloud. I have purchased one of those flash drives that searches your pictures and copies them. I want to sort the pictures into files first. And I would like to empty the wastebasket. I don’t want anything remaining on the cloud where anyone can see it. Or where I have to pay for storage, I have Sandisks I can store pics on.
Would you please post a video on how to move all pictures and videos in their original format from both Apple computers (libraries) and iPhones to an external hard drive? And, also how to move pictures and videos in their original format from the iPhone directly to an external hard drive with and without a computer? Thank you so much!
I want o know 200GB $2.99 per month 1. Can I pay one time for whole year? 2. Can you explain this option can shared with family? share with 1 apple ID or different apple ID?
Hi @Sovath Y! So as far as I know, Apple does not offer a yearly rate as an option. It's only a monthly rate, and I haven't heard to much talk on the internet if that's going to change. It would be a nice option. I don't have a video yet about Family Sharing for iCloud, but yes, you can do it and you totally should! With iCloud Family sharing, you can have up to 6 users on the account. Each person has their own Apple ID/iCloud account. You're able to share storage, purchased content, calendars and more! For me personally, it makes perfect sense! We have 6 people in our family, so we all collectively share 2TB of storage among other content. It's really nice! Stay tuned for more videos to come and thank you so much for watching! I appreciate the support! Here are some links that maybe helpful! Joel, another good video. I have 24k photos on my MAC after cleaning, all dups gone. but my ICOULD still showing over 50K. How do I make my MAC update my cloud to get rid of the dups or is there a way to clean out the dups on the ICLOUD?
I would say that time is probably the battle at this point...I had a similar experience with my Photos Library...I was at about 50K and deleted about 20K and I remember it took easily a week or two for it to reflect the same number and sync between all of my macs, iPhone, iPad and icloud.com. I presume you're using iCloud Photos and you have enough storage in the cloud? When you go to sleep overnight, are you leaving your Mac on and connected to power with the Photos App left open?
Great question @Jamie Thornington! Someone could for sure copy the photos from an iPhone or iPad to a flash drive and then delete them off the iPhone or iPad if they want iCloud Photos to remain on. Whenever you use any cloud service, you're always dealing with two different locations of where files are/could be saved. 1. Locally on the device. So if you local storage fills up, you for sure need to delete content to regain space, or buy a larger storage on the device to begin with and have room to grow, but also know you could eventually outgrow this pre determined storage. 2. In a cloud. When you start paying for cloud storage, it's almost like an extension of the device. You can offload files to the cloud so it frees up space locally on the device and then when you need it, it will download the file. All cloud options come with an additional price tag. I think it really comes down to each user and if they want to use a cloud solution or not. I did make another video that talks about backing up photos to a flash drive that I'll link down below for reference: How to BACKUP iCLOUD PHOTOS! Options for your Mac, iPhone and iPad! Surprisingly, nobody is talking about how to browse the data in the iCloud which is stored NOT from your Apple's own apps but from other third-party apps like Whatsapp messages and photos. How can I browse those in iCloud? If I want to delete something from iCloud, I need to see it first to know what I am deleting. A number showing the total space usage does not tell me anything about what I am about to delete.
Great point @mzeeshan! I think no one is talking about it because there really is no way to see that data and every app is most likely different. When it comes to Apple's own Apps, like: Contacts, Calendar, Photos, Messages, etc. The data in "iCloud" is what you see in each app. iCloud is just a syncing tool and if you are using it to "backup" Apple even says it doesn't backup the content if iCloud Syncing is turned on. I will link a video below that discusses this: iCLOUD BACKUPS - WHAT you NEED TO KNOW when it comes to backing up PHOTOS, iPHONES and your devices! ruclips.net/video/7ep9pREplD8/видео.html As far as any 3rd Party Apps, I think the purpose is designed for easily saving your content when you switch to a new device, whether you are upgrading or replacing. Take WhatsApp for example, on the link below they talk about what iCloud backs up and the intent to restore from the backup, but you wouldn't actually access that information. It's a safety net. What you have in that app, is what it is and it saves it as a backup in iCloud. If you delete something out of there, then it may not sync to iCloud and be backed up. Hi Joel, nice presentation. I am getting a message that says a large amount of my cloud space is being taken up by documents in the "upper level" of my cloud. How do I get to the so-called "upper level?" thank you for any help you can give me.
Thanks @Wheelchair Destinations! I appreciate you watching and the support! So I have to say, i've never encountered that message before. But my hunch is that it may be talking about the folders in iCloud Drive. Usually when something is referenced as the "upper level" or "top level" it's talking about the hierarchy of a folder structure. So for example, if you had a folder called 2012 and then created a folder inside called Vacations and then created another folder inside called California ( 2012 > Vacations > California). "2012" could possibly refer to the upper or top level. Do you use iCloud Drive or the "Files" app on your iPhone or iPad, or are you syncing "Desktop & Documents" from a Mac? My best advice would be to start looking in the "Files" app or iCloud Drive. If you need to, attach a screenshot to the community tab on my channel and we can have a visual to reference!

Very helpful - particularly the info about seeing iCloud storage vs. device storage. One other topic that would be great to have you cover in one of your videos (because I am trying to figure it out) would be iTunes Match. I think that iTunes Match does for music, what Photos w/iCloud sync) does for photos - it allows me to have the same songs, albums, playlists on all my device without requiring them to store the songs locally - like Photos it manages the local storage and only downloads when needed. I haven't quite got it fully figured out, but it looks very useful. It would be great to get your insight via a video tutorial.
Hey Tom! Funny you say that, i just recommended that as an option to someone in a different video. I had iTunes Match a couple years back and got rid of it when I went to streaming subscriptions, but for $25 a year, it's an excellent deal for users how have a ton of music from CDs and content that may not be available in a streaming service! I may have to add this one to my list when I do videos covering Apple Music! In the mean time, if you have specific questions, let me know and i'll try to help the best I can. You are exactly right on the concept though. It uploads and syncs all of your music to your devices and you can either stream it or download it locally per device.
Can’t pay for more iCloud space. I am in account recovery because I forgot my Apple password? I called Apple Support and their reps now have continued to keep me in account recovery because I got a new debit card but never kept the 3 number security code. All I want to do is reset my password & buy more iCloud space. I bought 50g already. There is no way to pay unless Apple lets me reset my password? It’s been 5 weeks. Help Anyone?

To keep within the limits of your iCloud+ storage plan, you could duplicate your System Photo Library on the Mac and then delete any number of photos and videos from your System Photo Library that you don't really need to have available all of the time.

Great question @Danielson1234567891! I think users often forget that with any cloud service such as Apple iCloud, Microsoft OneDrive, Google One, Amazon, Dropbox, they all come at a cost. And the cost is purely how much storage you need. If you want to use any cloud service like these, you will always end up paying for storage. I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! Great question @All The Way One Hunnid! Unfortunately with Apple iCloud, they currently only offer 2TB associated with Apple ID. You can kinda get 4TB by adding into a family plan from my understanding, but it's a bit confusing as they don't market it that way. Just like any other cloud storage solution, when the storage is full, you have to either remove and delete files or buy more storage if the company offers it. I hope that helps! Hi @Andrew Dever! I do know many people who use Facebook as their main location to store photos, but I personally wouldn't recommend it. Facebook is great for showcasing and viewing photos, but it's not the best location for storage management and editing. Google and iCloud services are slightly different in how they offer a service that allows you to sync content where Facebook, Instagram and other social media platforms are more designed for showcasing what users create. Lol we didn’t click on this video to hear about how useful iCloud is & to buy more…To simply say that we should buy more is so fine deaf. 1.) you don’t know people’s financial situations and 2.) it’s not even about the money at this point. It’s honestly a scam. The more storage you buy, the quicker it gets filled up. Not to mention that ALL of your devices share that one bit of storage. Not new storage for each device. I truly don’t care if someone, or I have spent more money at McDonald’s than then 50 iCloud storage. It’s a matter of ethics. You should’ve just put *apple sales pitch from someone who doesn’t work at apple* before you pissed a bunch of people off
Hey @K, I respect your opinion and appreciate your feedback. My purpose of the video is to explain the errors that often occur when users get the iCloud Storage message that says it's full. As i've always mentioned, iCloud is not required, nor do people have to use it, it's really a syncing service for convenience. Also many users often think that Google, Microsoft and other cloud solutions are magically free when they're not, so I'm explaining some options and expressing my opinion. Honestly if someone don't want their content on all devices and they don't care about syncing information, there is no need to pay for any cloud storage from Apple, Google or anyone. Because is the grand scheme of things it's about the user and understanding what iCloud is as a service. My five years working at Apple gave me a lot of experience with users who didn't 100% grasp the concept of the cloud, and so i've put my effort into creating content to help others. I'd love to hear an alternative solution for users when their iCloud Storage is full. Always looking for more options! Hope that helps clarify my intent. Thanks for watching!
Hi @Ricci Mercado! Not trying to sell anything, more so just trying to inform people of their options. Apple doesn't always make everything as intuitive as we'd like it to be! How much time did you spend of options that work ? We got a lecture on buying iCloud space and that’s a no brainer . Instead you could have told us how to transfer iCloud files to iPhone memory lying spare for which we have already paid a lot or the use of a portable hard disc and keep backing up what’s important. Nobody gives any guarantee of cloud data security so why rent some insecure garage.
I appreciate the feedback @sudhir sharma! So in the grand scheme of things, this video was designed for users who's iCloud storage is full. When this happens, you really only have two options: 1: Buy more storage 2: Delete content from iCloud to regain space on iCloud. I think what most users overlook is the purpose and need for "cloud" storage. It doesn't matter whether it's Apple iCloud, Google Drive, Dropbox, or Microsoft OneDrive, at some point, all of these cloud buckets can get full, and the user will be faced with the same dilemma. No if the device itself is full, that's a whole different probably and buying more of any cloud storage doesn't guarantee that will fix that issue. It's always better to buy a larger sized phone with room to grow. I hope that helps! Valid question @Lexus LC! I think with any cloud/software solution, there is always a threat of it being compromised. We can either use the technology and accept the risk and don't use any of it. If you choose to use it, I believe Apple is pretty safe. They have long focused on security and as long as you keep good strong passwords and use the cloud as it's intended, it can be quite safe. What if I don't want to use iCloud? I hate it! I really hate iCloud and I really hate Apple now.
Hey @Mama2LoLa! I left these comments also on your other comment you left for reference. Always keep in mind, iCloud is not required to be used with your iPhone. Although recommended because of the strong integration of content, it's best to fully understand all aspects of the goal of iCloud use. I've been in your shoes in addition to many others with these "cloud" systems...it can be very frustrating at the beginning to say the least. I totally understand your frustration! iCloud in general is a cloud syncing service, so it's designed to sync the same content amongst all of your devices, which is why your'e experiencing the deletion of photos across all of your devices. If you're just starting off learning about iCloud and how it integrates with all of your devices, I would actually save this particular video for later...I have some that I will hopefully explain iCloud in whole and how it is designed to work in relation to Photos and other content on your iPhones, iPads and Macs. For the mystery of getting photos in Photos Library from your iPhone even though iCloud boxes are unchecked, there are still some other settings/preferences within Apple Photos that may be turned on, and you may also have a feature called Photo Stream depending on how old your devices are. That was a good iCloud sales pitch, NIT how do you manage the I cloud. get things off the cloud and clean it up.
I think sounds like a good ICloud sales pitch, but make a lot of sense, when you have to deal with the problem (hope not) you will think different.
How do you know what photos are backed up in icloud?

Furthermore, I could agree that not everyone needs all of their photos on all of their devices, however for me, I personally enjoy it.
Yup!
Yes also we don’t spend enough time deleting photos and videos that we don’t need and people just kind of hoard. Which is basically where I’m at right now thanks for the other options⚡️⚡️ reminders David.
See/ I just screenshot this so I can do these later € too much screenshots. Ha ha infinity ♾

You could approach this a couple different ways (depending if you have a Mac also)
End goal is to export the photos from Apple Photos or export from photos on Windows (assuming you're syncing the iCloud Photo Library with iCloud) to a folder or location that is not within the location that Apple iCloud Photos is syncing to.
I have a couple videos related to above that should help:

Check out the following item below if you haven't already:

I actually have a video that talks about using this that I'll link below for reference:

ruclips.net/video/pWZZlYU62ts/видео.html
As far as using another cloud, it could be a possibility. iCloud Photos certainly would not work.
I have another video below that I believe reference that setting that I'll link below:

Your best bet is to set up a nas storage device on your network which you can access from anywhere.
Hi Joe you mentioned that Apple 1 you can go up to 4tb but when I looked into it it says 2tb on the premier how do you get up p to 4tb please
Great question @Graeme Craft! I did mention that and since then Apple has kinda back tracked...however it's still possible, but it's very limited.
Apple made a change with the Apple ID's where you could use a different Apple ID with iCloud and then another Apple ID for Media & purchases.
If I navigate to the following on my iPhone: (you may or may not see this depending on what plan you're on)
Settings > Apple ID > Subscriptions > Apple One > Manage iCloud+
I can choose to associate my Apple ID with different accounts.

You have to buy apple one subcription
If you buy ICloud storage one month and the next month you don’t , will you lose the storage and the pictures and information?
Hi @Nuevo!
Unfortunately as far as what I know, Apple doesn't offer a monthly option for iCloud services. If you were to stop paying for your storage, you would have 30 days to download all of your content locally to a device. I will link an Apple Support article below that speaks to this that may be helpful.

Lots of great features and benefits to having iCloud+

I'll link below for reference:

i have 2TB icloud. i am not in US so i can not buy more than 2 tb. iCloud is full. i have 4k movies and pictures from iphone 13pro. and it's normal to have full 2tb with iphone 13pro who does big pictures and movies..
I backed up my photos and videos from my iMac to an external HD
and now I can't get them from my HD to my Mac book.

Easy Peasy.
Great video I really understood for a change

Getting my 1st iPhone tomorrow after always having an android. Watching many vids to understand the whole Apple way. Thank you for your videos.
That is where I'm at right now. Going to be getting my first iPhone in September. Any advice for me? I've always been an Android user.
OK I did backup icloud, and now backup is taking my icloud memory so what are my options besides buy more icloud memory that I don't want to $
Also how do I turn off google drive for my photos?

Keeping up with technology is a constant challenge.

This video wasn't really intended about backing up if your storage was full, it's more so of understanding why it could be full and then looking at the options of what to do.

how to back files on icloud drive to external drive or time machine? thanks for the nice video
I can't find "system preference" on my laptop (Windows 10). ??? Could you tell me where to find it? Thank you.
Well done!

Ugh! Help! Thanks! Kerry
I have the 2TB subscription and it's full. What's the next option. I record a lot of video with my phone
My question is once you buy the new gigabytes can you then upgrade your phone and transfer and everything over
Hey @Cleveland Montgomery!

Great presentation and a plug for Apple iCloud but you didn't give me any alternative to free up my cloud storage!
Thank you for your great information.
Thanks! Useful information.
My mail can’t receive any emails. What can I do? It’s driving me nuts
Hey @Emer Mc Laughlin! So that's a loaded question... :-)
What type of email are you using?

I will link a handful of videos below that relate to iCloud that will explain the concept and use of it further in depth that I would recommend to watch:

Do you work for Apple or something!! How about something useful like if it’s possible to have part or your pictures saved to you phone and the other half on on the cloud
Nice video! A question: 0.90$ a month for how long? Until you fill it up?

OK, now my 2 TB is full on iCloud+ & they say that’s the max storage I can get. Now what?
Manage your iCloud storage
support.apple.com/en-us/HT204247
Do you have a Mac?
It helps more than you know and is greatly appreciated! If you know someone who may benefit from this video, feel free to share it along!
But I can’t get there to that page
Hi @Donna Clarke!
What page are you trying to get to?

Just to add something to the conversation, i turn off my iPhone every day for few minutes ,
Hey man can you not just Empty your iCloud photos onto USB stick to free up space in iCloud ?
I did make another video that talks about backing up photos to a flash drive that I'll link down below for reference:

I will link a video below that discusses this:
iCLOUD BACKUPS - WHAT you NEED TO KNOW when it comes to backing up PHOTOS, iPHONES and your devices!
ruclips.net/video/7ep9pREplD8/видео.html
As far as any 3rd Party Apps, I think the purpose is designed for easily saving your content when you switch to a new device, whether you are upgrading or replacing.

How much iCloud Storage do you have? Is there a specific message or error you're getting, or it just says not enough storage?
If you go into the Settings and look at how much physical storage is on your device and how much it's used, is that amount less than your iCloud Storage?

To keep within the limits of your iCloud+ storage plan, you could duplicate your System Photo Library on the Mac and then delete any number of photos and videos from your System Photo Library that you don't really need to have available all of the time.

I agree that using iCloud is great but when will the fees stop. Your fees will keep rising &10, $20, etc.
If you haven’t already, please support me by subscribing! It helps more than you know and is greatly appreciated! If you know someone who may benefit from this video, feel free to share it along!
My 4TB iCloud is full. What now?
Great question @All The Way One Hunnid!
Unfortunately with Apple iCloud, they currently only offer 2TB associated with Apple ID. You can kinda get 4TB by adding into a family plan from my understanding, but it's a bit confusing as they don't market it that way.
Just like any other cloud storage solution, when the storage is full, you have to either remove and delete files or buy more storage if the company offers it.

Have you ever considered Facebook for your photos that’s probably far better than google or iCloud

Thanks for watching!
yeah, it's a sales pitch...

When this happens, you really only have two options:
1: Buy more storage
2: Delete content from iCloud to regain space on iCloud.
If you would like to support me and the content I’m creating, please feel free to SUBSCRIBE and use SUPER THANKS on the video if you haven’t already!

I hate it! I don't need all my children's photos from their entire lives on every device, I don't need every photo I take on every device, but when I go to delete it from anywhere, it says it will be deleted from everywhere.
I would recommend to watch some of these other videos first and hopefully it will provide a little more insight.
