I take my hat off to controllers, they do such an incredible job under such high pressure. Awesome video stef
You’re absolutely right Harrison. It takes a special kind of person to be an ATC. But every person I’ve met in ATC is also incredibly friendly and just really down to earth. Glad you enjoyed that one, cheers.
@@StefanDrury
One of the few jobs where you get paid to stare at a window, obviously with a purpose. Good show sir. 👏👏
I could’ve stayed up there all day. Amazing sight over the airport up there.
I bet, same. BTW good catch of the QANTAS take off with the old paint scheme.
Australia is way cooler than the U.S. Every time I ask if I can film in a tower here they act like I am giving away top secret information. 😂
Haha, then come down here and I can introduce you to our Air Traffic Controllers Steveo! They’re honestly the friendliest group of people I’ve met, passionate about safe aviation for all, incredibly professional, but yeah very open about sharing what they do and how they look after us pilots. Thanks for watching mate.
steveo1kinevo you are. Distracting the atc is punishable by about 3-12 months in prison
@@StefanDrury Would love to take a trip up to the MEL or SYD towers someday, been up in the MBW one but it isn't really the same and the people there seem to just hate everyone lol. My dad was fortunate to be able to visit the LHR tower ages ago on a rotary trip and said it was incredible
Pheonix Blaster no way? Always one has to be a Captain obvious. I’m sure they wouldn’t do it if it was going to distract ATC. He is right though, we in America are way to stuck up about stuff like this. Way to be cool Australia..
@@tommyworth1266 America didn't use to be like this before we flushed our country away in the 70s onwards. That's why it's called 'The Nanny state' and artificially driven by elites.
My dream is to become an AirTraffic Controller, thank you so much for this inside information👍
Thanks for watching Bryce, good luck with everything.
Stefan Drury Thank you so much! I appreciate everything you do!
@@brycedebner1146 Bryce, I started my career as an ATC nearly fifty years ago in 1970 and I am still involved in aviation, so hopefully you will enjoy aviation as much as I am still doing. It is a very rewarding and challenging profession. Good Luck and enjoy......
Basil Kilian hey, I know you posted this two months ago and I was wondering if I gather advice from you
@@FLYBOYRSA1 hey I want to a air traffic controller too, is it hard to become one? And is it rewarding?
To be proud as a Air Traffic Controller , a Challenging profession🎉🎉
Greetings from the U.S.! I fly general aviation out of Savannah, Georgia (KSAV) and we use LAHSO there quite frequently. Loved the video!
So much visual delight in this video.
Absolutely brilliant video. Great to see behind the scenes and learn about how ATC operate. Thanks for sharing.
Love the ATC videos!
Great video Stefan! I have also had the privilege of heading up that same tower! It truly is amazing. I’m so glad you were able to share it with everyone else.
What a wonderful video. Thank you for all the effort time and production value you put into it. Kind regards Paul
This was a fantastic production. I’ve been searching for a video inside ATC and this finally popped up. Simply amazing quality, the filmography is superb, and he was so precise in all his words. He knows his job very well.

Fantastic! Absolutely loved it!
Great video Stefan, thanks for sharing.
Top notch interview!
Great video. Always fascinating what happens on the other side of our safe travels.
Must be some coffee loving ATC Controllers, look at all those mugs !
I love coffee ☕
I watch all of your videos, and love what you do! Looking forward to the trip.
I like how this atc knows exactly what he is talking about. His speech is so clear & confident.
Very informative and good interview video Stef 👍
Great insight Stefan!
Ahh this was awesome! Video could not be long enough! Those views man!!!! Sooo good!
This video is so helpful, the years I’ve been a pilot, ATC have been nothing but a voice on the radio, as you pointed out in this video, they are awesome people, and they are there to help, watching you’re video calms the anxiety a little now you know who you are talking to. Thanks for making this video mate,
Blue skies and limp windsocks! 👍
You are busy turning turning out lots of very high quality productions now Stef, great stuff! I am fine, thank you and still managing to turn out my weekly flying videos but alas falling short of your standard. Looking forward to your next one as always.
Awesome video mate! Keep up the great work!
Great Video Stefan.
Great work!
Stef and Jason, well done guys! Absolutely terrific video!
Thanks Tom, I’m hoping it’s not Jason’s last appearance on the channel. He’s very good on camera.
I'd never put much thought about it but I Seriously never considered the tower was seperate do from the controllers! I'd always thought there were all up there together! Lesson learnt! Thanks!
another great video Stef!! Thanks. It's much more roomy up there than what I would have guessed. A kitchen too!! I visited the old tower & approach/departures etc back when I was a teenager. Hugely interesting stuff.
Yeah you’re right I was quite surprised how much room there is up there too. Thanks Tony.
One of our local GA airports (Boundary Bay CZBB) are fond of LAHSO. The prevailing wind in the summer is 270-ish, so departures and circuits are on 25 while arrivals are LAHSO on 31.
Great video!!
This video is going global. Nice one
Awesome video!
thats awesome! very informative. they sure get the best view in the house! i'd love to see the differences between a class C tower like MML, and a Class D tower like MMB where they only use visual and assumed separation.
Love these atc videos
Thanks AP, more coming on the channel in 2019...
Thanks very much Stefan. That's fantastic and fascinating. Would love even more of it.
I had a hard time cutting it down to that length. We covered a lot more, I’d love to bring some more “Inside ATC” videos to this channel, so it’s great to hear you enjoyed it. Thanks for leaving that comment, stef 👍
That would be great when you can. I do love your videos. They're so fresh and natural and always lots of fun.
Great content!
Good info Stefan. I visited the control tower in my infancy of flying then again later on. It's a big help to see what goes on there. This video was helpful too. Thank you for this effort. Fly safe
Cheers Gary, Airservices were fantastic to make this happen so I’m glad you enjoyed it too.
Really interesting. Thank you
Great Video!!!
Great video as always, Stefan!
Many thanks Michael 👍
Lucky you got to go up the tower Stefan. I often watch the planes land and take off from the Arundel Rd near them
My partner used to live nearby
I have been inside both towers for Work Experience, very interesting!!!
Awesome video Stef!
Thanks Mick 👍
Just recently found your channel and I’m loving all your videos! So interesting for someone a bit hesitant about flying, would love to learn one day and your channel is really inspiring me. Thanks for the great videos :)
Nice to hear from you catrema, thanks for being a part of the channel and I'm glad the videos are helping you enjoy aviation and maybe start flying yourself one day too. I've got a big trip around Australia, two weeks of flying and travel with lots of video content coming next week, so I hope you'll come along for the ride on that adventure as well. Let us know if you have any questions, thanks again, stef
Stefan Drury looking forward to seeing your next adventure 🛫
very cool stef,love your work
Thanks afldude, yeah it was a real privilege to get up there and have a look in the Control Tower.
Great Video loved being close up in the Control Tower ✈️
Thanks Stewart, yeah it was awesome being up there. And that view...!
Great video as always!!
Cheers Benjamin
Great video - thanks Stefan
Thanks for watching Tony, cheers, stef 👍
Thank you! Very informative!
Thanks for watching Stefani 👍
i love your videos bro! as a ground controller i must say its a tough work but in the other hand its fun for those who like RTS video games. Great content Stefan.
Thanks for watching, glad you're enjoying the channel, cheers, stef 👍
this guy did a good job of explaining all the functions of each controller..well done sir...SWEET!!
Thank you Omari, yep Jason was a great tour guide for me in the tower. He’d be a great person to work with. Thanks for watching, stef 👍
+Stefan Drury i could spend all day away from work at any Int'l airport..i just love it so much
Their all Ais confirmed bro. 😎
@@darthlinathegreat7489 WOW..what took you so long..only 4yrs down the road..
Did you get to go in the old atc tower....... the view from that and of course the new one is outstanding, great video by the way🤘
I had the pleasure of going into Sydney Tower a couple of months ago and it was an amazing experience! Great vid stef :)
I’ve never been up there, that would have been a great experience for sure. Thanks for watching, stef 👍
Great episode. Thanks for asking my question! (Glad you got a giggle out of it)
Was a great question! Thanks for asking it, and forever being part of this vlog Paul.
It's Jason! I did my instructor rating with Jason.. Good to see he's doing well!
Fantastic 👍🏻⭐️
Thanks David!
Great video - Nice V-Jet taking off at 1:45, there's only a few left flying.
Isn't that just a 737-800 in retro Qantas livery?
Informational and personably professional.
Thanks Daniel, glad you enjoyed watching that. Cheers stef 👍
You're welcome. Stefan, I admire your style and experience.
Thanks Stefan, ATIS Viktor was showing last years date was this from their history
It’s very interesting video!
I cant click like enough times! Really interesting!!!!!!!!!!!!
Legend Stefan. Proper decent video
Thank you 👍
Thanks mate for showing to the world the differences between Area Control Center, Approach Control, and Aerodrome Control. As an Aerodrome/Approach Controller, this is by far the best and the most informative video I’ve ever seen. Ans i’m quite jealous with the technology YMML Tower has. Haha.
Thanks Renz, I really appreciate the kind words. Glad you enjoyed it. And thanks for the work you do as part of the great worldwide ATC network. Much respect for what you do, stef.
Renz Bulseco, what was the process you went through to become one. I'm almost 13 and I've wanted to be an ATC since I was 7/8 however I have no clue how to get to become an Air Traffic Controller.
Fantastic video! I completed an ARO qualification with Air Services Australia a few years ago and they were/are excellent. Might have to check out this channel further; Liked and Sub'd. Thanks again.
Way back when I was doing sim training in ATC, I used LAHSO. If I had given simultaneous landing clearances on crossing runways, I would just tell one of the planes to stop before reaching the intersection. And they failed me. That's what you get for being a pioneer.
This is such a good video that my school used it ✈️😄
Btw absolutely love ur vids
Thanks Hazza, great to have you here on the channel. Thanks, stef 👍
That was a fun video very informative. Yes it is to bad that the old tower can not be turned into a restaurant.
If we petition hard enough Michael they may give in. We should setup a kickstarter page...!
Enlisting in the airforce to be an ATC and get licensed soon, looks great up there
I would crush coffee all day and night with this job. The few times in the office as a geologist crushing coffee time.
Great
@2:18 LAHSO is a unique procedure to Melbourne ... so is Melbourne's driving "hook turn". So, does LAHSO then mean: "Leave Active, Hook-turn, then Straight On"? How is this NOT typical of Melbourne :)
Thats the most spacious atc tower I've ever seen
Oh no I'm sorry to hear about
Up next: TROLLING in the Air Traffic Control Tower (Atlanta Int) - Flight Simulator X
LMAO
Really good video, thanks. Did Airservices want to vet this before you uploaded it?
Thanks lawboy777, glad you enjoyed it. And yes Airservices did take a look before I uploaded, but no requests for any changes, it was more a courtesy thing tbh.
Hey Stefan, First can i say how much I enjoy your videos and i'm looking forward to seeing your tour of Australia. Can I ask what app you use for you flight planning? Keep up the great work
Thanks Sam, I really appreciate that. I'm currently using AvPLan EFB as my flight planning app. I used to use OzRunways but recently changed for a few reasons, which I might make a video about soon. Hope that helps, cheers.
Stefan Drury it does thank you.
Watching your videos really makes me want to fly for real. At the moment I am just a sim pilot:)
@Stefan Drury there does not seem to be any videos showing what happens at ATC when a plane squalks a 77 code. Could you do a video showing what actually displays on a ATC screen and what their immediate actions are.
Hi Stef...hope the Ceduna trip was uneventful. Trust you received the video clip. Cheers Ian
Never heard or met a stupid air-traffic controller. Really enjoyed watching. Very informative video and well done to the controller for explaining it so well.
Aaron Williamson You’ve never met me!! 😉
Aussie ATCs, best out there 😆😆
1st amazing video I love aviation
#notificationSquad
+5 internet points for being first! Thanks for watching, stef.
What happened to 'you're too quick' ? Lol.
What is the pay scale for seasoned contollers? In the U.S. it is $80K to $175K from what I`ve read.
I love this video, I'm really looking forward to when I become an ATC. Especially working up in the Melbourne ATC Tower. However I'm almost 13 so probably will be another 13 years before I become one. I really wanna know how many days they work per week, how many hours they work per day, what is the process it takes to become an ATC and what I need in order to become an ATC. My dad trained to be one but dropped out half way through the process.......
Lu.B.J.C why did he drop out?
I'm begin training in Melbourne soon, you just apply with AirServices. I'd recommend focusing on mathematics at school, (you don't need to know complex maths, just be comfortable and quick with the basics).
Also download/use some of the ATC simulators online and try it out through that. It'll help you during the final stage of the process
ATC really is the best job I have ever worked.
I have so much respect for anyone who does that for a career. Thanks for looking after us pilots!
@@StefanDrury anytime! Without you guys I'd be speed chashiering 😂
From a pilots point of view...the pier style parking bays creates delays. The most painful airport out of the 3 major
Does ATC to aircraft pilot radio communications vary on the ground of an airport from airport to airport concerning receipt of IFR clearance on designated frequencies such as Clearance Delivery, Ramp, Ground, Apron and Tower? IFR clearances can be obtained from contact with any of these Air Traffic Control units above dependent on the ATC operational procedures in force at that specific airport. Does the pilot of an Airline have to be trained by the Airline as to which ATC unit to contact to obtain the specific clearance required at each airport?
👍👏
I thought paper strips were retained as a back up is a power failure or some other problem, would not have computer controlled paper strips be a bad thing?
Our electronic strip data in Canada is retained to the same standards (or probably longer) as was required with the paper strips. As well investigators have the ability to go back and review how a controller manipulated the strips during an incident.
Aircraft call Super (A330, 777) and Heavy ( A380, 747's) right, so what are Q-Dash ATR and 737's or A320 called, Light and Medium?
5:08 What if there is a total power outage? No backup strips?
I've been in the Albury tower - just ring the phone and up you go.. (ASIC required) :)
That would be great, I’d love to visit that tower one day. Talked to them on the radio many times!
Tomias Thexder ASIC?
Im going to be here in march ;) for avalon
Does anyone know how to be able to go and view inside ATC in the US?
One thing that I can’t understand is when the cross wind gets above 15kts or so they go to single runway ops.....Creates unnecessary delays
It's cool
I'm an atc officer in India
Best plane spotting spot EVER. And the only entry requirement is 15K subscribers on RUclips!
Haha, great comment Kai 👍
