This was vert helpful. I am a 12 year old aspiring ATC. My dad did all the training but quit right before he could start because it was too stressful for him. He has been teaching me different things ATC's say. This was such a cool video.
Stefan outstanding VLOG. I almost became a controller in 1990 in the States, scored a 99 on the written, had the interview and physical at SFO tower and was fast tracked and then I received a letter that the FAA was in a hiring freeze. Oh well that would have been just as enjoyable as a pilot. My father was an airline pilot for 31 years and he told me that the stress and burn out rate in that environment is higher.
I am also an air traffic controller here in Davao, Philippines (RPMD). I love this vlog! It's an informative video especially to those who don't have an idea what air traffic controllers do for a living. Aerodrome/Approach represent!
@@StefanDrury or @renzy, how do sims work. I'd love be curios to see why you need need a physical sim vs a virtual on VR or so? Also why do you need other people being pilots, can't there be bots that operate as pilots?
Great video. If I knew you were there at the time I would have said hi. The scene where you show the two controllers with an instructor in the sim in the Learning Academy I was only 10 meters or so away. I’m retraining as an approach controller after 8 years as an enroute controller. Your videos inspired me to get back into flying after not having flown since 2014. Keep up the good work.
Hey Andrew, oh that's a shame would have been good to say hello. That's great to hear you're retraining, I wish you all the best with that, and thanks again for everything you guys do for us pilots.
Nice video. Greetings from a fellow air traffic controller. Worked at an artcc and vfr tower here in the US. Nice to see how similar things are on the other side of the world.
The ATC center was much different than I imagined. The big computer screens are a far cry to the old CRT type that people usually picture in their head. As for the question about new pilots getting over the fear of talking to ATC, I've found that watching piloting videos where the ATC is patched in to the audio is a great way to learn how to talk on the radio.
This is a great snapshot of the WHOLE ATC system. There are other "what goes on in [ATC]" videos out there, but your personal approach with Peter was less documentary and more enjoyable. You've earned my sub!
Thanks Paul, that's the style I'm going for on this channel so it's great to get feedback like that. Thanks for subscribing and welcome to the channel, cheers, stef 👍
Great video stefan, I was lucky enough to work for ASA in the Mechanical services department for a few years (my father was in the electrical department for 40) In the old tower we had a great view of the airport and it was always a major distraction, I would stop and watch every plane I could. I even remember sitting on the roof of YMMB and watching Helicopters coming and going while i was supposed to be fixing their AC.
Also I did hear a rumour that the old tower will not actually be removed when bld 172 ( i think its 172) is knocked down, But then again ASA tend to knock down buildings and replace them a few years later just for laughs.
A good method to train phraseology is to use virtual networks (Like IVAO) to train communication and procedures. That's what is used and worked perfectly. A lot of very good people simulating ATC positions. (US, Brit, CAN or AUS).
Great video. I manage a travel agency on Barry road, right under the flight approach path in Melbourne Airport. I sometimes watch the aircraft coming in one after the other in a orderly fashion. Now I know who is controlling them. Cheers.
It’s so fantastic to be allowed such a fantastic insight into the Australian system. Probably one of my favourite videos yet. Would love to see more like this if you have the opportunity Stefan! Keep up the excellent work!
Thanks Callum, I'm definitely working on some similar ideas of behind the scenes content in the aviation world, watch this space... Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it, Stef 👍
Great video. I was sorry that it didn't go for longer. I think ATC are amazing people and to think they cover so much area from here in Melbourne. Brilliant stuff thanks again for showing us that..
Great look into the workings of ATC. Interesting to see Mel taking radio calls and yes controllers are people just like the rest of us just doing their bit in the world of aviation.
Wow, so this is the Melbourne centre that i have been communicating throughout my training in victoria.. nice still remember the frequencies.. 7:14 and thats the exact aircraft i did my instrument and multi engine rating on.. NCE
Awesome video stef! My visit to YSBK tower really helped to put into perspective what they do up there and how it’s done which helped to bridge the controller pilot gap. Was awesome to see how everything works in centre as well. Great video!
I really liked this one. I was very close to becoming a controller a few years ago - passed all the entrance tests but just couldn't get on a course - so was keen for this video. I still wonder what that life would have been like but I think the moment has passed now unfortunately.
12:00. That’s why when I call for a request (i.e VFR flight plan change, or first call), I call with just my callsign until they answer just in case if they are on their phone, I won’t have to say it twice and take up for time on the radio
Thanks for watching, yeah it's a fascinating world when you start to look into it. Shameless plug but if you enjoy the ATC content there's a playlist of videos I've made with ATC here: ruclips.net/video/YXd5SuUjIjA/видео.html
Just seen your work mate and love it! I'm a student pilot myself in Melbourne flying out of Moorabbin so seeing the training sim for MBW tower was pretty cool. I was actually lucky enough to get into the real tower for a bit while I was doing work experience at one of the flying schools (which I now fly with) and my dad got to go into Heathrow tower when he was on a Rotary exchange trip years ago. Nice to see the inside of the voices I hear so often. Loved the guy at 4:52 as well that was hilarious ;D
Thanks David, I think it’s quite rare to get that level of access and be able to film in there. Thanks to Airservices for making it happen, really glad you enjoyed the video, cheers, stef 👍
Hello Stefan, glad you came over, that was real fun, just how i would have done it! I could virtually travel with you! Enjoyed the birds eye view of the Vision Jet as well. I was just watching Matt Guthmiller flying in Europe after crossing from the US. Well Done to both of you!
Amazing application of your enthusiasm Stefan. Thank you. Flightradar24 has an AR option so that when you point your phone at the sky it tells you all the details especially if flight plan filed, of the aircraft overhead. You should explain SID's and STAR's as to how organisation is bought to busy airspace.
Hey Stef, what a really awesome video. It's so nice to know that the air traffic controllers aren't scary people but normal human beings like the rest of us. Mind you, the pressure must be enormous. P.S, did that bloke that walked in on the interview was he ever seen again ?lol. Cheer mate.😄👍
We aren't scary at all! There is some pressure... but its not as stressful as everyone seems to think it is. The bloke that walked in still works there.
Good job on the camera work! I helped produce some training materials back in the 1990s, and it took some effort to sync the cameras up to match the refresh rates on the controllers screens.
that was really informative! thanks for asking my question too. good to know they dont get too upset when calling in with the wrong name. If I had of thought about it, it would be interesting to know how many of them play on Vatsim
There may be a chance of a return visit to ATC, in which case I'll be compiling more questions for the controllers there. So hold on to that question, it's a good one. Thanks for watching 👍
Stefan! You caught my IFR Flight Test! Im in (7:10) NCE, Departing Sheparton and Heading back to Moorabbin via Mangalore. I was the only one flying NCE on the 22nd Apr. (Im assuming thats when you recorded the video) Haha

How did you get access to MEL tower? How do they track aircraft and land aircraft in PER from MEL and the same with BNE Center landing aircraft in DRW? What facilities are currently used in the old tower? Why do they bring aircraft over Sunbury at 4000 when it used to be a lot lower and also why do they bring some aircraft further East of Sunbury for their downwind leg?

It's not fair, this guy should have more followers. What's going on with you... tube?
Congratulations for your channel.

Thanks for a great video... very informative. You should have asked at what age can person still apply for ATC.
Super Video and background music
Fantastic vid!
Awesome video! As always :)
Thanks General K
I m having big questions. How the flight does move to other airports. ? Like Throw location or or how does pilot know the road to go. ? Explain please
mohammed naisar one station passes you on to the next station either by phoning the other station or letting you know what they want
Wait a second... no kangaroos managing planes? That buffled me...
They didn't like me filming them so I had to edit that department out...
loved it! - i'm wrapped to have had my question make it in to the video. Cheers Stef
Stephen
Thanks for putting that question forward Stephen, was a great question.
Hi Stefan, the video is very informative. Very good. Pls advise how to proceed for becoming ATC, what education we need to.?
Hey Kaushal, thanks for watching. Airservices have a good FAQs section on their website answering questions like that. Check out: www.airservicesaustralia.com/careers/air-traffic-controller/frequently-asked-questions/ Good luck!
I go to that airport every time I fly out from Melbourne which I live in Melbourne.
Good Job!
Hi, thoroughly enjoyed your video. Did you happen to ask them how many aircrafts (at max) a single controller handles at a time?
MUST BE FIRST. Must be a great video! Must like!
That’s funny, when I am in a plane coming in to land at Canberra airport, the approach controllers are in Melbourne. Never knew or suspected that!!
