- What's inside Sydney's Air Traffic Control Tower? What's the view like? Who works there? How do they land planes? I get special access INSIDE the high security ATC Tower and talk to Controllers managing live aircraft at Sydney Airport.
Thanks to Airservices Australia for offering me the chance to show you what it's like in the cab at the top of the air traffic control tower. See How Air Traffic Control Works and What It Takes To Be An Air Traffic Controller. Could you be an air traffic controller? For more information on careers as an ATC check out the Airservices Australia website.

I fly for AirAsia X and we always fly into SYD during pre-Covid days. SYD controllers are some of the nicest in Australia. Some of them would actually greet us in our native language. Glad to see the friendly faces behind the voices. Great vid Stef!
6 mins ago!! dude!!!! As a private pilot I know you have already heard the chatter on the radio but being in the ATC tower is a whole nother level!!
I was looking forward to this one, quite an interesting tower design.
Yeah i know
There's a lot of this kind of aesthetic in Sydney. Late 90s early 2000s because of the Olympics ^^
Thanks to Airservices for inviting Stef, thank you Stef for taking us with you 👍
I also enjoyed your video with ATC at Hamilton Island as well 😊
That was really cool. Great video.
He could never work in the USA as I can understand every word he says.
yep for sure
That’s because he’s speaking with an English accent, not an Australian accent. 🙂
So what are you trying to say?
He can get a job in the states
Or he can't because you can understand him?? I don't get it
He’s being sarcastic - implying that air traffic controllers in the US speak poor English. 🤪
@@geoffk8996 and very quickly spoken poor English of non Icao standard.
Thanks Stef. And a big thanks to Air Services Australia. We know how security would make it nearly impossible for most of us. So glad they reached out to you ❤. We would happily watch more. Cheers.
Loved this one Stef! It’s great to see the behind the scenes work in the tower!
As a teen. I got to see the ATC tower . It was amazing, but I loved the radar room even more!
Stef, I watch a lot of aviation channels. What stands out to me about yours, as a low hour (200-300) SR22 pilot, is how much you teach us all, through your humility and exploration. No wonder your channel has overtaken some other entertaining, but "look at me" aviators. You've got the real "wings" mate.
Great video, thanks Stef! Huge respect for the folks doing this job.
Sydney's tower is definitely one of my favourites! It's so unique and recognisable, take one look and you'll immediately say "Ah yep, that's good ol' Sydney!".
Thanks Stef, I enjoyed this video. It's always good to see the face behind the microphone. I hope everyone is doing ok during these lockdowns. Please stay positive and happy.
This was so cool. Thank you Stefan and Air Services Australia.
Awesome video! Very informative! It is great to see how ATC works around the planet. This was the first tower video ever that I have seen from Australia! Cool!
What an incredible structure and a great video, thanks!
Epic video Stefan! I got to go up into the Darwin Control Tower years ago and watch both commercial & Military aircraft take off and land! Such a great experience! Hats off to all Controllers around the world!
Wow, that's a beautiful, and unique ATC tower. Thanks Stefan!👍🏼
Very interesting, great to experience a side of aviation that we don't see much. Thanks Stef and hope you and your family are ok down there.
Great video Stefan as always, congrats on the 100k as well!
Wow what a great video! I've always wondered how it looks up in the tower. Thanks for the video mate.
Another Great Job Stefan, Those guys at YSSY are great guys, we landed on a 172 first time early this year, the Sydney tower personnel were so helpful and extremely kind to accommodate us (GA pilots) to flight in and out of Sydney. I hope to flight to Melbourne soon and other major cities in Oz as soon as covid goes. PS I can wait to see you flight around the world keep us posted.
Fabulous! Don’t know how the hell they do it. Too much going on! I’d be happy sitting up there all day watching movements. Thanks Stefan! X
Great vid Stefan, my son Matthew works as a supervisor on the field at CLE here in the states and he was able to get me into their tower. Similar experience. Loved it! Keep up the great vids, I watch them all.
Fascinating video,thanks Steph.
This is great mate, thanks for bringing it to us.
Awesomely interesting! Great to see the operations on the other side of the microphone I enjoy talking to!
Very interesting and informative. As a young airport engineer, many years ago, I spent quite a bit of time in Control Towers. More recently my flying school organised a visit. Despite all that, I continue to be amazed. Great learning for all pilots. Cheers Stefan.
I was really looking forward to this video. Goodjob
Very informative video. Well done Stef.
So cool!! Thanks Stef!!
nice one, Stef, thanks for this!
Another great video! Well done.
Congratulations on 100k subs! Love your content mate
Thank you, it's a very humbling number.
Wow it's amazing to see what happens in the Sydney tower congrats on 100k stef also love the vid stef and keep up the great work 👍✈
Thanks Lachlan, glad you enjoyed it.
Love your video’s, I look forward to your postings. Thanks
Always wanted to see inside the Sydney Tower. Thanks Stefan.
Nice insight Stef. Looked like fun 🛫
Great insight into the endless operation of an ATC
I’ve been driving past this my entire life and always wondered what was inside. Thanks for the video ☺️☺️
Clear. Concise, succinct - nice one Stefan
Awesome to get invited. Thanks for filming and sharing!!!
“Wangled” haven’t heard that word in a while hahaha but on a serious note excellent video Stef! Really gives an insight to student pilots and experienced pilots to what life is like on a different side of aviation! Loving these contents!
Great video, I could never put myself under that pressure to do that job, you really do have to respect those who do that job! Great insight, hope your doing alright in lockdown!
Congrats on 100K! Seems like I only found your channel yesterday but I've been watching since 20-30K :)
Congrats on 100K subs!! I’ve been here from waaay early on
Soo many more questions but understand the time constraint. Great video!
Wow that Grant is an absolute hunk 😍
Great video, I really like the design of the tower!
Amazing video as always! You are probably the best RUclipsr out there!
Hey thanks, I appreciate that.
@@StefanDrury Congratulations on 100,000 subscribers, by the way
What a view! It sounded very relaxed during the video, and fun. If I didn’t want to be a pilot this certainly would have been a job I would take. Great video Stef, hope you have a good evening :)
Yeah some pretty decent plane spotting from up there hey? Thanks Oscar.
My heartiest congrats , you should be very proud of yourself, 100K 👍. You , me and the controller all long to get back to our homelands , let’s hope there is light at the end of the tunnel . Cheers mate
@Saif Khan ???
100k!!!! Finally! This should've been reached years ago
Always wanted to know about it. Been curious of this tower for over 20 years. Thanks budd.
My name is Daniel in Adelaide, I'm watching your video and having a great time! Always follow your channel, keep it up
Congrats on 100k Stef!
Thanks Lachy.
Excellent Stefan, thanks.👍🤗
CONGRATS ON 100K!! btw, are you gonna do a 100k special, if yes when?
Thank you. Yes I am planning something special to give back to you all when this lockdown is over.
Great stuff Stefan
Great video as always. We all hope traffic levels will rise again soon.
Excellent piece.
Wow Great Video! It's cool to see what goes on up there, Hope you doing alright through lockdown👍
Thanks JB, looking forward to getting out again but thanks for asking.
Awesome! I’ve been up at the Melbourne Airport Tower at night when I was studying for my CPL licence. The view is incredible and the people up there are so cool and calm. Myself and a colleague flew over from Moorabbin in a Piper Turbo Arrow. It was great to see everything from that point of view. Landing at Tullamarine as a hoot too!
That was really interesting and very privileged access- cheers
Very nice job. Millions of time I drive passed there and always have curiosity about this tower and how does it work. Good job BRO..
I like that guy he has the same name as me lol, also a very good insight into Sydney tower so thanks Stef.
Congrats on the 100k! Keep up the great content and hope your doing well in lockdown :)
great vid Stef..
Nice video Stef👍
Really good video. One signature structure that has always fascinated me driving past any airport is the rotating radar dish. They always seemed to be moving 30% faster than a huge metal contraption like that should be. Like a fairground ride where the operator has slumped over on the dead-man’s lever.
Congats on the 100k milestone!
Thank you 🙏
Holy! The channel has reached 100K Subs!! :eyes: It’s Amazing How Far The Channel Has Come!
Very cool and interesting! I too have always looked at the air traffic control tower at Sydney and wondered how it all works in there.
So cool! What a view. There’s so much going on up there but I guess when you’re that familiar it’s second nature.
So cool! Love our Aussie ATCs 😍
“We’re almost at pre-COVID levels”… this didn’t age well 😂😂😂
"this didn’t age well" - much like zero covid policy itself...
Hahaha , you nailed that one :)
Cool Video Stefan, you now know who are telling you off!!!!
Stef, I don't know if I have already written it... I am getting old but better late than never: Congratulations to reaching 100000 subscribers!
You seem to be famous for getting asked about the visit of the SYD tower.
Thank you for sharing your video with us.
Omg every time I go to Sydney airport and work at Sydney airport always wondered what it looked inside thanks stef!
thanks for the content. Very cool
Thanks for watching Kingston.
Lucky enough to be a controller in the uk, love it!
Hey Stef, another great video!
As a YMMB pilot, can you do ATC @ YMMB? I would love to see the faces behind the voices I hear in my ear on a regular basis.
@@Luke-qf3ue wow, didn't know that. I asked my instructor ages ago, but he said they stopped taking people up. Thanks!
I love the giant slide
Nice, emailed them a while back to try get a couple of local PPL pilots in for a visit, no chance! Great video
Thanks Stef! Really enjoyed seeing inside the tower and how they operate. This is my dream job, but unfortunately at 46 years old, I think it's a bit late for me. Not to mention having to train in Melbourne when I live in Perth 😕
You are never too late Neil, i am just completing training at 53.
and pass all tests requested by air-services and airways (NZ) which I did during last 4 weeks , really tough ones and require quick reaction and quick calculations and good 3D orientation.
@@AndrewPa Being able to plan & do those time distance speed calculations are very important as well as knowledge of your local area if working in the visual control room so you know what direction they are flying for conflict resolution.
@@seanmcerlean how do you apply for Air Traffic Control Trainee. I have looked on the airservices Australia website but cannot seem to find it.
@@AndrewPa what do the tests involve?
I live right near this and go past it every day (at least until lockdown started!). Ever since I was a kid I always wondered what was in there. And it’s nice to see because whenever I do fly back to Sydney, I see it and I feel like I’m back home.
I have been up there! Extremely cool experience!
That was awesome
Congrats on 100K Stef! Working on my RPL at the moment, hoping to solo on my 15th birthday
That was cool!
Visiting a control tower in Sydney during the restrictions, just to make a RUclips video. Well done.
That seems like the coziest office ever
Lucky bugger. Still miss the days of being able to visit the cockpit… had a friend get to sit in jump seat on descent and landing into perth back in the 90s.
You can still visit the cockpit after landing. I got to see a QANTAS A380 cockpit in 2019 after we landed in Singapore for the stop-over on QF2.
Loooooooved it!
I went to Bankstown, Sydney UTC (across the road) and Sydney tower for work experience a few years ago, an amazing experience!
Man, only thing missing on these towers are slides, so that at the end of the day, you just casualy slide down from your awsome job!
wow, this job, just feels so much more important than mine
Wow what a stressful job but very interesting
Hey Stef, congrats on 100K !!! Great video as always, did you get any pictures of the Antonov by any chance because at 1:53 on the map I saw ADB333F which is actually an Antonov 124 and later on in the video to you showed it quite briefly ?
Spotted it on the screen too, I would've loved if they included the Ukrainian pilots accent in haha
@@slplanespotting yes it would, I always love listening to ATC when it is at Sydney
Hey, Stef! Can you get back to landing at every airport in Victoria when able? That was an awesome idea! Thank you for another upload!
As soon as we're allowed out again it's top of my list.
@@StefanDrury Awesome! Thank you for the reply and I look forward to that content!
I love that we can still plane watch right next to the tower. not many airports allow this anymore.
I've visited several towers and an ARTCC. The people who work there and the work they do always impress me.
Last time I was in Sydney the plane landed on 16L. I was watching out the window as we flew on and on and on and was starting to wonder just where we were landing...
