I'm 69 now, and did my PPL at Bankstown's Illawarra Flying School in the 70s (however did my first solo at Hoxton Park airfield). Back then my instructor (Frank Smith) took me into Sydney twice for class C CTA experience. Even then we had to hold for a little while, either on the ground at BK or over Canterbury Racecourse to get slotted in, and they asked us to keep fast until short final as there were jets coming up our clacker. Memorable times. There was no 16L then, just 16/34 and 07/25. I'll forever remember being number 1 at the holding point for runway 16 and getting cleared to line up and take off with all that runway ahead of me. One of my big highlights from flying. Maybe I could do it again if I really wanted to book a slot and pay the huge landing fee, but the days of flying into SY easily, grabbing a burger and back home are long past. I'm so glad I trained way back then.
I landed at Sydney during my training in 1981. “Keep your speed up, there’s a 747 behind you.” 😮 “Take the high speed taxiway to the left.” Probably the most memorable event from my training.
My first solo was at Bankstown thank you indeed. Will always remember cloud ceiling lowered as it does there sometimes was at 1000ft bout to commence to short final was VFR asked tower for cloud ceiling 500ft they knew i was first solo vectored me straight in, before I broke cloud level on my right hand side I saw what maybe was a 747 at the time and the exit slope full run and climbing, in having said that it was many miles off coming out of Kingsford Smith Mascot what a sight 2 behold indeed. Memory that will never fade watching it pierce the cloud level and making its way out. Long reef Norther Beaches Collaroy Narrabeen on your left with two high rise towers Flight Deck and forget the name of the other one but there was on the beach only two towers at the time Dee Why then Brookvale then Dee then Manly on your right , nice way point it was at the time a huge golf course on the headland , the spit bridge another recognizable way point VFR. Thank you for the ATC and commentary takes me back a few decades or so. never flew into the heavy iron space at Mascot nicely done and again thank you. 2 much dirty air there even if vectored in , just me I guess.
I paid $132.86 all up. The detailed breakdown: 1) $60 Runway Charge. The cost is $6.59 per 1000 kilos, but has a $60 minimum. There's no explicit "landing" charge. 2) $0.39 Passenger & Airfield Security charge. The cost is $0.34 per 1000 kilos. The aircraft MTOW was 1160 kgs, so this works out to $0.39. 3) GST of 10% on the above 4) Multiple the above figure $60.39+GST by 2 as there are 2 flight plans, one for theleg going in and one for the leg flying out. The prices as of 2021 are here: assets.ctfassets.net/v228i5y5k0x4/1viJiqYujos0vpFcfQbdTo/e511a967130e61e5ab7f1e90d51dcc5e/Table_of_Charges_COU_Version_2.42_-_1_Jan_2021.pdf

Which flight academy?
Not thru a flight academy. I hired the aircraft privately on www.sydneyaircrafthire.com.au/
@@hansrd Thanks for the info.
