Hey all, so in case you didn't see the announcement video, we launched a new scripted podcast last Wednesday called Extremities. It's all about why and how people live in earth's most isolated and extreme settlements. In season one, we tell the story of Pitcairn Island--a small British territory in the South Pacific with just 50 people. It's 300 miles/500 kilometers away from the nearest other inhabited place, 3000 miles/5000 kilometers away from the nearest city, and 10,000 miles/16,000 kilometers away from its capital city in London. The twist and turns that Pitcairn takes through history and the explanation of why and how Pitcairn still exists today are fascinating, in my biased opinion. Episode 1 is out now, episode 2 comes out tomorrow, and I'd love it if you'd give it a listen. Drew F brother even i have "routes" for when the stupid métro and trains are on strike, i literally am waiting in a station because Parisian transport is on strike
I was in a flight from Berlin to Barcelona on May 9th. EasyJet chose to wait out the delay, so we had to sit for three hours in the plane and wait. It sucked, but it got to the point where the pilots offered "tours" into the cockpit where we could ask them what we wanted and take pictures of us "flying" the plane, it was really awesome and saved my day :)
No one's noticing, but this channel is now directly interviewing people of consequence in the airline domain. Usually these videos have a lot of references, but not that many this time because he's getting credible information right from those who do the job. That a silent but noticeable altitude gain for this channel! Keep soaring!
I just want to give a shout out to all the air traffic controllers around the world. I know usually the pilots are the highly praised and cheered (rightfully so), but air traffic controllers are also the unsung heroes for all of us getting safely from point A to B safely which rarely get the credit they deserve. Most of us don't even think about them when flying but they have such a crucial part. This is one of the jobs that is not for everybody, you really must have nerves of steel and very sharp mind to deal with all that stress, pressure and responsibility where even a small mistake could lead to tragedy. I worked as a truck dispatcher for year and a half and it was such a stressful and demanding job so I can't imagine having to deal with planes and keep everything on track.
Conspiracy theory: Wendover Productions is part of the international civil aviation organization and his goal is to recruit more pilots into the industry
@@synpse He was able to do that because America is a chickenshit country. If the ruling class tried to do that to French workers, it'd quickly escalate into a general strike.

I'm currently in training to be a controller in the USA, so when I saw this video I was initially skeptical and assumed it would either skimp on depth or explanation, or just flat-out get things wrong. Sam, you did a fantastic job of providing a great overview without getting into needless complexities that would've not only lowered the entertainment value, but likely created room for error. The only thing I wish you had touched on is standard instrument arrivals/departures, which are used to efficiently sequence aircraft landing and taking off in predictable ways. These allow for drastically reduced controller workload in the early and final (most complex) stages of the flight, and therefore higher traffic volume. To continue your traffic sequencing metaphor, they can be thought of as different on and off ramps to the airways. I look forward to seeing what you have in store next.
In Germany an air traffic Controller gets between 72000 € and up to 130000 €. Noted that that’s for a vocational training job, you don’t need to go to university. The average income is 37’873 € a year, the median income is about 36'000 € a year.

It's soo good to see independent creators overtake BBC on every level! You never see this nice animation, commentary and narration on a bulk produced documentary. You even had interviewees! Nice job, love you videos!
It is a bit simpler due to the lack of political divisions of the airspace but there are still a bunch of people involved in that, mostly due to limitations on both the technology (Radar line of sight limits, radio channel capacity etc) and of course the limitations of the human elements (Air traffic controllers can only handle so many aircraft safely before the limits of what is humanly possible causes unacceptable risks). At minimum you would have the Chicago airport ground, Chicago tower, Chicago TRACON, New York TRACON, and the tower and ground controllers at the NY airport accepting the flight etc. Not sure if there are any other intermediates but the NY area and the Chicago area are most definitely under completely different centres in particular due to the fact both manage a mess of very busy airports. Particularly large ones of course include JFK, LGA, EWR etc on the New York side and ORD and MDW on the Chicago side. The NY ones are particularly complex as they have three very busy airports so close together that their approach paths are inherently in conflict and thus there is constant coordination needed to ensure that only compatible runway sets across all the airports are designated as active etc.
@@seraphina985 There are intermediaries. After Chicago TRACON, they'd be switched to Chicago Center, then Cleveland Center, then New York Center and then into New York TRACON etc. The En Route Centers in the U.S. have a very similar design to the European ones mentioned in the video. (Each split into areas, then split further into sectors).
Seraphina S And that's the job of AT controllers employed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Such a lovely organization... NOT. Actually, all three airports are in the top 10 airports (in the US) in terms of average minutes of delay PER FLIGHT. Chicago-O'Hare, San Francisco Int'l, Boston-Logan, and Philadelphia Int'l are the other major culprits I can remember. I think Denver might be on the list as well (snow in the winter, severe thunderstorms and tornadoes from late spring to early fall). Chicago Midway may be on the list as well.
He was already making a bunch of videos on the topic. Generally sponsors go towards videos that are relevant. And for him it aligns with what he loves to talk about.
All those upvotes and no one mentioned that Covid19 didn't bring us lockdowns until 2020? People never heard the term Covid until early 2020. Or am I missing something?...
KK holy shit these are getting annoying. It’s because the aviation industry is full of people working around the clock to get planes up and down safely. There’s so much to talk about when it comes to the general fundamentals of aviation, and he clearly likes aviation, not to mention the views he gets on aviation related videos - there’s no reason to stop! His first big video was about aviation.
@@Carlyknarly The apron is the aircraft parking lot - passenger boarding gate areas etc. "Tarmac" is confusing because it also can mean the actual road surface material. Most airport roadways are concrete, not "tarmac" or bitumen.. Different countries may use different terms for the same area of the airport. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airport_apron
What I really like about this channel is that if you were to do a survey and ask the average RUclips viewer if they would be interested in detailed video's about the aviation industry, you would barely get any positive results. Yet, because Wendover explains everything so diligently and interestingly, he created interest and therefore an audience of more than 2 million people. Keep going, you're doing great work!
Just few days before my state examination from Air Traffic Management I find it extremely useful! Thank you for a great video! Great job! Keep doing aviation related videos there is lot more to be shown to public :) Thank you!
The minions meme taped to the wall at 1:52 is cracking me up "Every day I arrive at work with good intentions and a great attitude... Then idiots happen."

Half a million views in less than a day. Good job, Sam! Congrats on 2 MILLION subscribers as well. Its nice to know that some people on RUclips actually want to use their time to learn about our world
jtn2002 it is not error because( I know this sounds odd but) the is meant to be a number on the left. I have this problem too but just remember that flight level 245 is > than the levels below
Really cool that you cover European topics, I'm from Germany and it's awesome that you make these high quality videos about stuff that is close to my home
7:39 Just an important correction here. Planes are separated 1000FT apart if flying in opposite direction while separated by 2000FT if flying in the same direction. 99% of the Times Planes flying East are cruising at odd FL (37000FT,35000FT, etc...) While planes flying West are cruising at even FL (38000FT, 36000FT, etc...). This rule applies (NE=odd) (SW=even).East is anywhere from heading (0-179) West is (180-359).
If they are flying SCCL and are not in climb/descent. Other than that the controller can do what they want. Handovers are performed on SCCL of course, but 1000ft minimum vertical separation is correct.
stupid comment! With or without the EU, those centers have to be settled! Asia has no EU but they're building up a much more efficient network, using AI - which is not the case here, apparently since human decisions are still preponderant - giving their centers the means and rights to monitor air flights above Asia. EU is NOT MANDATORY!
A well presented and satisfying look at the entire overall picture related to Air Traffic Control, perhaps those who complain about Air Port Delays of departure/landings will understand the complexity of this amazing system/ As a fourteen Years experienced A T C Controller, I found this item to be perfectly explained and the best item altogether on what is a complex task. Thank you for the brilliant presentation.
I can attest to the May 9th issues. I was flying from France back to Canada and our flight was delayed. I also have friends who’s flights got canceled entirely within France
Air Traffic Control is a field seriously in need of a modern, ground-up refresh. I've suspected this since seeing the film Pushing Tin many years ago and this pretty much confirms it. Hats off to the incredible men and women who keep us safe within this antiquated system.
I hope you do one on Flight Dispatchers. So many people don't know we exist, yet we share legal authority over our flights jointly with the Captain, chose the route that you will fly, figure out how much fuel you need, what your performance information is, and then once on the way we are your eyes in the sky keeping the crew updated with information from weather at your destination and alternate, thunderstorms and ATC restrictions enroute, to natural disasters and political unrest. I think we would be a great addition to your aviation portfolio, since so many people think pilots do this on their own.
2:42 Funny you show that area with EGSH, that's my local airport! However sometimes flights to the Middle East out of Manchester or from America do come over that area.
I don't fly much, about 6 times total, so I don't know if this is rare or not. I had a window seat and I was looking out and seen what looked like a missile or an UFO fly past us in the opposite direction. The object was only visible from my window for about 2 seconds, that's how fast it was traveling. The object looked to be about an inch or half inch in length from my view of it from the window. Of course I got a little excited and started telling my wife about it who was sitting next to me. The lady in seat in front of me informed me that it was a plane I seen going in the opposite direction, and since both planes were traveling at about 400/500MPH, that's why the plane was only visible for a brief moment. Man to see that, it makes to realise how fast you're actually going. It's hard to judge just from looking at the ground or above the clouds. That tripped me out!

This route makes the video way more interesting, though
I don't think that was the point
@@seraphina985 There are intermediaries. After Chicago TRACON, they'd be switched to Chicago Center, then Cleveland Center, then New York Center and then into New York TRACON etc.
The En Route Centers in the U.S. have a very similar design to the European ones mentioned in the video. (Each split into areas, then split further into sectors).

And that's the job of AT controllers employed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

DAMN IT I WROTE IT AND THEN SAW THIS COMMENT
Man, I don't trust Ground Control,
They left Major Tom at Mars.
To be honest though when he was talking about Ground Control and said Apron instead of “TaRmAcK” I nutted just a little bit.

@@Carlyknarly The apron is the aircraft parking lot - passenger boarding gate areas etc. "Tarmac" is confusing because it also can mean the actual road surface material.

The minions meme taped to the wall at 1:52 is cracking me up
"Every day I arrive at work with good intentions and a great attitude... Then idiots happen."
This is exactly the amount of detail I like
Never thought about Air traffic control until Wendover did this
I'm an air traffic controller in Canada. This was a rather excellent simplification of what the job entails! Good work!
Sometimes it's not about making things special, it's about making sure that what we don't notice, stay unnoticed.
This was an amazing video, really brings a whole new appreciation for ATC.
Half a million views in less than a day. Good job, Sam! Congrats on 2 MILLION subscribers as well. Its nice to know that some people on RUclips actually want to use their time to learn about our world

ATC is literally my passion I love this video thanks for making it :)
so.....can pilots Alt+F4 on flight?
do aircraft lag out randomly?
If computers are not working properly the plane and the passengers may glitch out. Wort type of glitch is when you got not control over the airplane.

East of England where I live it's military airspace, avoided by airlines.

That Airbus has nothing to do with the EU, which makes OP's comment pretty stupid.
stupid comment! With or without the EU, those centers have to be settled! Asia has no EU but they're building up a much more efficient network, using AI - which is not the case here, apparently since human decisions are still preponderant - giving their centers the means and rights to monitor air flights above Asia. EU is NOT MANDATORY!
Well, I wasn't expecting more aviation. Very educative, keep it up.
I absolutely love your knowledgeable videos such as this. Professional work 100%.
Flight just became 3 times more complicated than it already was for me
Air Traffic Control is a field seriously in need of a modern, ground-up refresh.
You are the exact reason I want to be an airline pilot. I dont want to do that shit myself. The unsung heroes of the sky
2:42 Funny you show that area with EGSH, that's my local airport! However sometimes flights to the Middle East out of Manchester or from America do come over that area.

Learning about air traffic control is actually so fascinating! I'm sure there's many more videos you can make about aviation!
Your production value just skyrocketed! thank you for providing this for free to us.
