June 2017 I was flying back from Thailand on Qatar Airways with a connecting flight in Doha, Qatar. This was right after several other countries closed their airspace to Qatar Airways due to allegations of Qatar’s government supporting terrorism (some say it was Russian manipulation seeding distrust). Of course, this forced our flight WAY out of the usual path and it ended up being longer than the longest commercial route that previously existed. We landed at JFK in New York as planned originally but, rather than restrict them from US airspace, they had imposed restrictions that made the flight even more difficult to bear: No laptops, phones, tablets, handheld electronics, etc were allowed on the flight. My New Nintendo 3DS XL was stolen in Thailand but my 3-month-old Nintendo Switch had to stay in the cargo hold. :( Luckily, their planes are posh and were well equipped for entertainment no matter what seats you have. Hopefully laser propulsion will come into fruition soon enough on both, worry about fuel and amount of weight needed to store fuel will become a thing of the past!
@@jazzerson7087 Laser propulsion is less than ideal inside an atmosphere, the reason for this is the same reason why you see the whole sky lit up during the day and not just a white-hot circle of intense light where the sun is. That being that the atmosphere scatters light passing through it though this is much much worse at lower altitudes where the air is thicker. This would require a much larger sail to pick up enough of the beam but this also increases the thrust needed exponentially as the sail also massively increases air drag which leads to a catch 22. Perhaps it could work with a hybrid scramjet to get the plane up high into the stratosphere before unfurling the sail so a satellite can push it but I am not sure and don't feel like doing the math right now.
A fun fact about the Philippine Airlines' Manila to New York flight: Originally that route was served by a 777-300ER with a fuel stop at Vancouver. With the arrival of PAL's order of A350 just this September, that route can now be a completely non-stop service.
@@peesinyourass Well as the video explain the reason is economics. Having a stop over is cheaper. New fuel efficient planes make the economics of non stop flights work.
777-300ER range: 13,650 km A350-900 range: 15,000 km MNL to JFK: 13,673 km and expect many Filipinos to maximize their baggage allowance with "pasalubong."
@@Robert-yf1kn Can you imagine how uncomfortable you would be if you were one of those types of people who would never use a public bathroom on a 20hr flight? Like seriously, how could you hold it for more than 22+ hours? (factoring in that you can't use an airport washroom either...)
I absolutely love the idea of Emirates etc of using a hub and spike network type of architecture in this way. A single stop isn’t all that terrible, and in order to connect one European city to all of the other cities in its network and vice versa, it only needs one additional flight.
I like long, non-stop flights because you don't have to worry about a connecting flight being canceled or delayed. Once you are on your flight you are going to your destination and I like the peace of mind in knowing that.
We need straight flights from Miami to India or at least China/Japan/Australia/somewhere in East Asia. This is the third most populated state in the USA and there's still only just 3 flights that fly directly from Miami/Ft. Lauderdale to Asia. Funny.
The Holy Emerald the thing with USA-India flights is that since the Middle East airports are so well connected to the bulk of Indian airports that it’s more practical to fly via any middle Eastern airline than India-USA (as only delhi and Mumbai makes sense for any flight to come from USA)
ZK-APA true but there are already many flights directly from the US to India: San Francisco, New York (including EWR), Chicago, DC, etc. So makes sense to add a direct flight to another city or 2- one in Florida or Texas would be nice
Anything nonstop is just a reduction is crap that can go wrong. A lot less chance of lost luggage, delays to make you miss your connecting flight, having to haul your butt through another airport, extra tickets. Just so many reasons to want to avoid hassles.
@@KD-ns1hn Flat-earthers believe that the arctic is in the center of a flat disk-shaped world. So flying over the arctic is no problem. Antarctica would be more of a problem in their view.
*Wonderful for travel, if we can afford.* Would be fun, if the budget flights would include a 1 day stop-over with a nice bed, instead of flying for 16-30 hours without sleep. Some very smart Chinese airlines do that for very long flights with a stopover in China. Let's see if the others will do it too.
The midway point on the great circle between Sydney and London is Chongqing. There's no reason why they couldn't have a few hundred cheap rooms or sleeping pods to allow the cattle to rest between the two 10 or so hour flights.
@@ashleymalamute Why not spend an extra $100 if they offer you a couple of meals and a tour on a one night stopover? I often wish I could spend a day or so in the countries I pass through. A night in Beijing, the Great Wall and Forbidden City would be a great 24 hour stopover.
yeah they do, but I've just "done that", but checked out 5min later, because I'd rather sleep at the airport than that hotel with only chinese speaking staff and absolutely no plan when they would shuttle you back to the airport or if there's be even one at the time you need. @@wojciechmuras553 If it were not for the p*ssy US overland supersonic flight ban, much of these concerns would disappear. It is simply natural for an industry to evolve as it progresses. The market would demand better service and as such, technology would advance to the point that many problems are eventually solved. Imagine if we had companies competing for supersonic aircraft today that are efficient, clean, and comfortable. Elongated Muskrat himself has hypothesized that the US domestic market could have been far more profitable had flights of range 1000-1500 miles been replaced at least in part with supersonic flights. If by “last century” you mean normal, I completely agree
@@nathanoher4865 I heard an argument for the overland ban that really stuck with me; the boom will be audible to tens of thousands, but the plane only carries 100 people; it will be disrupting everyone for the benefit of the richer passengers that can afford it. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oklahoma_City_sonic_boom_tests) people apparently aren't affected much by it anyway, but there may be some property damage
@@henryzhang3961 NASA is developing technology that weakens aircraft sonic booms. These technologies could have been developed earlier had industry been allowed to progress. The flights Musk was referring to included cargo. Amazon is, indeed, available to and used by everyone. Meanwhile, the fuel inefficiency problem would have been worked on in the same way that subsonic passenger planes are becoming more efficient.
My flight instructor now flies for FedEx. He said people are far more concerned with getting their package to arrive on time rather than their mother in law to arrive on time
I think the main reasons why very long non-stop flights are heavily subscribed is that with a two hour layover (typical) it's actually more exhausting because you have to sit or wander around in a terminal. And all the hassle of unboarding and reboarding. Not everyone has lounge access. If the flight basically has BC or PE only (like Singapore) that's a great option.
I live in Aus and I used Cathay for the last 3 trips to EU. Premium economy, which isn't cheap, but still much less than Qantas (which admittedly many say is one of the best PE available) and even Singapore's versions. I did BA once, and never again. They were dreadful. Unless you're going to London, Qantas really isn't the best option IMO. Even if you are, they are significantly more expensive unless you can get a special rate booking a year or more in advance. As for the Perth direct flight, for the vast majority of Aussies Perth itself is 5+ hours to reach, more once you add travel to the airport etc. No reason to do that flight from the East coast, and I'm surprised to see the load rate is as high as you said. Interesting stuff.
I am flying from London Gatwick to Auckland in August, so excited! Doha to Auckland sounds like a killer though as that's what I'm going on. BA > Doha - Qatar Airways > Auckland
SaltySteve no it wasn’t there was simply no demand for this type of plane, business travelers prefer to simply spend a night on the plane in much more luxury than to commute more than 6 hours a day in tin can.
Grammar error in the title. "20 Hour-Long Flights" implies there are 20 flights that are each 1 hour long. "20-hour long flights" is what it should say.
5:09 - do you mean ".. which is why airlines will price *non-stop* itineraries typically higher than *connecting* ones.." ? Otherwise I'm not sure I follow the logic...
I replayed it a few times and then gave up. there are two parts of this video which could have been worded better. the other one is about a minute before this one
@@bamd8770 OH damn, I feel better now, I did the EXACT same thing. The other part that fucked me up was the fuel use graph. How does fuel use start at 31lb/nm then drop to damn near 0lb/nm? That graph is confusing, along with the narrative.
I think these long flights are relatively common for Australians these days. Pop a sleeping tablet and have a sleep, 20 hours feels like a deep 4 hour sleep :)
Just imagine having to sit in economy class in one of these 20 hour flights. This will definitely cause many health risks for passengers and crew members.
Well Akhil, there are two sets of crew in those flights, as well as a dedicated crew compartment, where they can lay down for a few hours between shifts, so I'm not worrying about them, particularly because they are for the most part young and fit. However passengers are a different story, and that is the point I agree with you. I would be reluctant to let board aging passengers to such a long flight, particularly on economy. The chance to develop potentially lethal or blood-clot induced heart attack, is way too high. I half-joked on another venue, that if I were an airline, I would insist on passengers passing a mandatory medical check-up over a certain age, before I'd let those on board.
We’re super happy about this development here in Chile. It will always take us forever to get anywhere, so being able to go to Dubai or London in one flight instead of two or three as it used to be is GREAT. I hope we get similar flights to other Asian hubs soon (Narita or HK!). I’ve been flying 12+ hours flights since a teenager so going up to 20 is not much
Very good job @Wendover! Your videos are super well structured and you could clearly see the amount of good work and passion you guys put in there. I'm looking forward to the next one already!
United Economy is literal garbage, I was using a European airline on an 8 hour flight but the new 787 was not yet in use and I believed several aircraft were being refitted so the flight was operated by United. Imagine a domestic flight on United economy and then imagine flying to Europe. While sitting on the plane you are more concerned about whether your legs will have to be amputated upon landing rather than how uncomfortable or crowded it is. The thin prop plane I flew on afterwards on a 40 minute flight was like Emirate airlines compared to the United flight.
@@volka2199 Absolutely true. We already know that United flying on LAX to SIN route is half empty. Thats because economy class on ultra long haul flight is more expensive. That reason why United is rather to operate on SFO to SIN route because less payload restriction.
just take some of the money you saved on economy class and get hammered or buy a few xanax. I'll sleep through an economy flight if it means saving a few hundred bucks.
Oh man bad memories. I bought flights from Melbourne - Sydney - San Francisco - Washington DC on United because they were a few hundred AUD cheaper than Qantas. Big mistake. Shitty old 747 from MEL-SYD had mechanical issues. So we waited. Then got to Sydney. Boarded. Let's go! Nope, mechanical issues. We sat on the tarmac for hours, with no engines running, getting ever hotter (it was summer) so by the time we departed 7 hours late, the whole plane smelt of body odour. Then it was the bad food, lack of personal entertainment (yes, in 2006, they STILL were using a projector and shared screen for movies). And of course by the time I got to SF the connections were blown. I think I arrived at Washington around 1 in the morning. UNITED. NEVER. AGAIN.

@@rafaelrp07 And they were approaching an age where things could be electrically powered, and they didn't have to break their backs working on a farm. Your point?
As an Australian, the issue with the Perth to London one shot flight, is that most travelers live on the east coast, not the west coast, and more often then not you have to either fly to Perth the night before, and fly out the next morning, or fly in in the morning, and not fly out untill that night. So untill we get straight shot's from Melbourne/Sydney it's still a bad system
QF9 starts in Melbourne, so you can board the flight in Melbourne and it's only a 3 hour transit in Perth. Qantas also connects it's other flights from the main capitals to dovetail with the Perth departure. The same is true coming home on Qf10
I was thinking the same. Why would Australians choose to do one layover with 4hr and 18hr flight and just not do the layover in Doha or Dubai and make the two flights almost even 10-11hr flights
@@MarijuanaCanada swoop will only be cheap until it chokes out flair. Then same ol. I usually fly one of these two, but they're only cheap sometimes and typically have the worst flight schedules, unfortunately.
I can’t even fathom surviving a 21 hour flight in economy. A 6 hour economy flight from NY to LA is already a pain (sometimes). I might as well bite te bullet and go business class.
The SIA Flight from SG to NY or LAX is only Business and Premium Economy. Premium Economy of SQ is pretty good, but I would bite the bullet too. Especially seeing that SQ Business Class is one of the best in the Industry and I wouldn't mind 18 Hours of that.
Dunno.... I’ve flown to Sydney both economy and business and arrived at the airport at the same time 😉 I find it a brutal, grueling flight either way. Upgrade didn’t seem worth it, but that was due in large part to Quantas business class seats sucking as bad as economy.
The problem is the longer the flight, the bigger the cost difference between economy and business economy. If I offered you $100 a hour to sit in economy for 20 hours would you think $2000 worth the discomfort?
Just recently flew to nyc from Melbourne and return in economy. Aussies tends to tough it out more because we are just so far away from everyone. If you’ve got the money fly business, otherwise unless someone is paying for it. It’s just not worth it.

Hopefully laser propulsion will come into fruition soon enough on both, worry about fuel and amount of weight needed to store fuel will become a thing of the past!
Just slap some SRBs on and you are good. No need for all these fancy calculations and SSTOs.
At least until you go nuclear.
A fun fact about the Philippine Airlines' Manila to New York flight:
Originally that route was served by a 777-300ER with a fuel stop at Vancouver. With the arrival of PAL's order of A350 just this September, that route can now be a completely non-stop service.
Salamat
But it thoughr that 777 have better range than a350s
@@peesinyourass Well as the video explain the reason is economics. Having a stop over is cheaper. New fuel efficient planes make the economics of non stop flights work.

...until the plane has to divert...... : )
So makes sense to add a direct flight to another city or 2- one in Florida or Texas would be nice
india has a much lower demand compared to other asian countries for example singapore or china.

Would be fun, if the budget flights would include a 1 day stop-over with a nice bed, instead of flying for 16-30 hours without sleep.

@@henryzhang3961 NASA is developing technology that weakens aircraft sonic booms. These technologies could have been developed earlier had industry been allowed to progress.

I can just sense the excitement in Wendover whenever he flies anywhere. I can imagine he'll know more than most!

What about 14 hour flights like from Sydney to dubai
Redline600 every bloody flight out of Australia is like 14 hours.

20 hours of hell. Never on United. I might rather die than spend 20 hours in United Economy class.

@eraserhead Exactly. Connecting flights to Sydney are inefficient. It's almost as if these people think they're the center of the world.

I find it a brutal, grueling flight either way.
