The Creators of Ninja Gaiden Play 'The Messenger'

- Hideo Yoshizawa the director/producer of the original Ninja Gaiden, and Keiji Yamagishi, the composer fo the original Ninja Gaiden had a chance to play The Messenger at Bitsummit 2018. The duo loved what they played and we invited them to check out the latest version and give their thoughts on The Messenger and its strong inspiration from Ninja Gaiden.

I can't even begin to imagine how this must have felt for you all, being able to show off your game to the very people who inspired you. Incredible stuff, congratulations all.
No joke!!! I remember getting sent home with a migraine in middle school in 91-92 and finally beating Ninja the Garden I.
Must be awesome playing a game your own old creation inspired.
It says a lot really. Most importantly, that even 30 years later, a game you made will still be an inspiration to others.

Yeah, but having Yoshizawa and Yamagishi playing your game is a greater honor.
The fact that they enjoyed it and we're looking forward to the release was probably a massive honor for the devs

Indeed. Like the other guy said, they are game developers, so I imagine the thought process might've been something along the lines of, "If I were programming this, would I make the projectiles destroyable?"
Funnily enough, you actually have to buy that as an upgrade in the game (even though it's potentially the first one you buy).
Anyone who played games back in those days understands experimenting with all the possible mechanics like that. It's you modern gamertards that don't get this. It's why you idiots don't even know to jump on the first Goomba in Mario.
That's a smart way to promote a game!

So great to see developers of the classics getting a kick out of modern games that pay respect to their originals. Must be incredible for the developers of The Messenger to meet these guys and see them playing their creation. Real heart warming stuff!
I saw a video with the games director telling a story about how he talked with the Ninja Gaiden devs after they played it. They said this was Ninja Gaiden 4, and he broke down and cried. That's a fans dream coming true right there.

Yoshizawa and the rest of the original Ninja Gaiden trilogy developers should do a video where they just look back at the three games and reminisce about the development process. I would totally watch that.
That would be amazing! I love those kind of retrospectives. With this game coming out, it would be a perfect time for them to do something like that, this game is going to get people to go back and play the games that inspired it, I am sure.
I'll definitely get this game, unless dying to the final boss sends you back 3 levels.

I just played through ninja gaiden 1 the other day! I'm glad I had a save state ready on the NES classic!
Save state? Dude thats cheating! No save states on NES games! (Besides ones that you are meant to save on like Zelda etc. :D)

This is possibly one of my favorite games of all time, it's incredible to see such legends from my childhood enjoying the game so much!
It’s really funny to hear the voices of these two giggling after all the hell I went through to read their names when the credits finally rolled lol
This could melt a Frost Ogres heart! I love when fans meet devs/writers/directors, like this and show them their inspirations. It happens rarely, but it's always great to see!
Yamagishi's Ninja Gaiden NES compositions are the greatest 8-bit soundtracks ever.

I'd dispute them being the greatest, but I'll definitely say they're very good. :)
No way! The best 8-bit soundtracks *are* from a ninja series, but not Ninja Gaiden on the NES. They're found in the *LAST NINJA* games on the Commodore 64. Particularly Last Ninja 2 which is hands down the best 8-bit soundtrack ever made.
After all that punishment they put us trough, it's hard to observe these nice, polite guys. I expected demons with otherworldly hatred for humanity.
Funny thing is, this game turns out to be top quality. 10/10

I'm playing it for the first time now and HOLY WOW is the start of the third act amazing or what?! I just knew about the 8/16 bit switching. But the story is what elevates it!
Immediately had to add this to my Steam wishlist when i saw it at E3, can't wait to give it a try in a few days.

The messenger is an amazing love letter to Ninja Gaiden. I love it. It's such an awesome game. I'm in what I believe is the end game. I try and play games as blindly as possible so I'm not entirely sure how far into the game I am. It does such a good job of bringing me back to my childhood. It feels like a classic game, all the way down to monsters spawning again as soon as they're out of frame. It makes me smile every time I start the game.

Oh man, this video is awesome on so many levels, but it's great to finally put faces to the names of the awesome people that were responsible for Ninja Gaiden. Also, a very special thank you to Yamagishi-san for putting some of the most memorable music in NES history, especially the first level of the first game, and the whole soundtrack to the second one.
Such a fun game. Some of the platforming parts were so insanely difficult 😂
