I love the SMA videos where Eric has already chased it back to the PCM and you think 'Bummer. That was a short video'. And then you look at the timeline and see the video isn't even half over. It's at that point you smile and say 'Stuff's about to get real!'
I wish there was a shop like yours around where I live. I do not trust most shops. Usually shops bend their customers over 3 or 4 times with no reach around.
From my experience (ontario Canada), most shops aren't out to screw customers intentionally... they are just so busy everyday that they don't take the time to verify anything. Things get busy, so they try to hire someone new and noone has the time to babysit the new guy who may mangle up a few cars before he learns in his own time.
I'd add a qualifier to that. I was in the business many years, and yes there were quite a few predatory shops. But on today's vehicles there are a whole bunch of shops without the investment in tools along with minimally trained techs. Either way, the customer loses.
The reason your normally the last option good sir is because you're probably booked to the hilt with all the customers who know you're the go to guy. Awesome work and video as always 👍
If a shop can take a vehicle on 2 hours notice or less they are going to get a lot of work. That they can do that says a lot about the work they do. Most of the general public doesn't understand this they just want to take it to the place that says they can work on it the soonest. To the more experienced customer it's more like going to the restaurant that has a wait every night of the week. You know know it's going to be better than the one that's half empty on a Saturday night.
Eric, You may get the second-hand repairs, but your knowledge and skills always gets the job done. I am always amazed at your diagnostic skills and determination to get a positive outcome. My wife and I enjoy your videos. Keep the great content coming! Cheers! PS: you need to be more mindful of lunch time. Mrs O is slaving away in the Office/Kitchen to keep you fueled up and she has to call you in off the playground.
I worked for 30+ years in the military defense industry and have seen so few tech’s as good as you! Most would have just gone down the list of “most likely” then would have scrapped it (government waste). Great job as always
Let me tell you how many government cars I have bought that they gave up on🤣. They would nicely mark them with problems🤣. Locked up engine=battery cable was loose. Bad transmission, won't move=cv joint broken. Fuel pump bad=Ain't got no gas🙃
Even the dealers have reduced themselves to "parts swappers" these days. Eric recently did a truck with multiple unconnected electrical faults. I was screaming at the laptop.. "Its a ground fault!". Sure enough after multiple thousands of $$ in parts replaced it was a simple ground strap!.. Incredible, who would have thought?.. Duh!
I also watched that video. No parts were actually replaced. But the dealer had quoted thousands of dollars for parts to be replaced. And charged a hefty diagnostic fee. Which was wrong.
typical, not fixed via short repair list(thrice broken) write off and new replacement(repeat 999 times a year or month!). considered flawed lemons or designed in flaws via foreign influences. sadly, it's ALL that way and has been for years. Imbeciles at the helm for far too long.
My dad was a Honda tech then too and said this was a trade between Honda and Isuzu. They made an Isuzu version of the Odyssey (Oasis) in exchange of a rebadge the Rodeo.
Mr. O, I keep tellin’ y’all your guesses are 99.8% right 100% of the time. I did the math. Thanks again for a great video and for lugging all of us around with you. We know it’s a pain, but you have no idea how much you help us out every day! You know, 100% every time!
You're an real pro. I own operate my own repair shop-service/repair-no tires or alignment...we've had a few customers come through with the "other" shops' estimates and finding that well a most are pretty straight forward and honest with labor but their parts markup is well... a lot...Thanks again and don't forget who told you about the small tape roll idea. first off (it was me).
You are the master of circuit issues Eric. You sounded so happy when you saw the flicker when taking the test lead off the plug. Great diag process & great outcome for your customer!
When I started using my mechanic I gave him small but technical jobs to test him that was 2007 I still go there.(he passed my test). He was a one man operation then now he has three on staff & works six days a week & still can't get all his appointments done.
I enjoy your trouble shooting. You common sense and don't overcomplicate it. You use old tech common sense. Not basically so high tech overcomplicate things . Keep it up . Everyone have a great day.
Well, this was a nice tongue in cheek thriller diagnosis !!! Following the yellow brick road from the source to the target. And how a dropped "" Medical Cannabis seed "" lookalike in the connector will mess up your day !!!! Sleuth Eric Holmes deduced the cause and applied the cure !!! Now the customer is a happy camper without any costly parts shotgunned. Well done PRNY SMA ASE Super Master mechanic Eric !!! Quality work from a quality garage. And we the people have learned another valuable lesson - have patience, start at the source and troubleshoot to the ending - you WILL achieve a definite result !!!!!! I await the next job to see what it will entail !!!! 😃😸💯👍
Eric your videos are alway excellent regardless of how dumb you think they might be. I always look forward to your videos. I’ve been a mechanic for over 50 years and I learn something new every time. Thank you for your efforts.
I like to think I am up on technology, but my grandad would be all over this. His father drove mule wagons, and he translated that into a freakishly good front-end business. He did work for Holman Moody, and I can see him saying that he has no clue what the blue/yellow wire does for steering angle, but we need to get the lasers to make sure front end is correct. In the end, I know he would find what was needed to fix the car and take no credit. Nice to see someone working through the steps.
Brother you have the one quality that is absolutely necessary when diagnosing electrical issues. The patience of a saint. Your ability to explain your thought process is just phenominal. I'm not trying to blow smoke up your behind, I really am impressed, and very few people impress me. Kudos.
Way back, when I first started watching your channel, I really only wanted to see you turn wrenches. I wasn't into the electrical diag stuff. But I watched them anyway even if just for the entertainment value. But you know... It didn't take long before I realized, based on your vids, how valuable electrical diags could be (and how much money I could save over just unloading the parts cannon). So I kept watching you and learning from you. Now, I have completed a beginner's course in automotive electrical diag and am working on intermediate. The process I am learning is exactly like you do it. This was a fun video because I knew exactly what you were doing and how you were eliminating all of the known goods until you found the culprit. Thanks Eric O. Your vids are entertaining, educational, and **inspiring**. Cheers! Oh, one more thing: I still quite enjoy the vids where you turn wrenches! 🙂
Another superb job of diagnosing. Get the print of signal flow and find where things go wrong......track down the point of loss......correct the loss point. You make it look so easy! Another super video!!
Its good being the last to look at something. Especially when YOU are the man that gets it fixed when no one else could. Laugh at them over and over and over. Have a good one
I have told all the car nut friends of mine about your channel. Why your subscriber numbers haven't hit a million yet amazes me. You and Diagnostic Dan are the two best diagnosticians on RUclips. Thanks for yet another great video Dr. O!
Hey eric, I tell you something I am mechanically inclined and I can pretty much do a lot on the car but the one thing that I do wish is 2 things 1 you were closer to me and too I couldn't know a 3rd of about electronics and a car that you do. I can sit back and watch your download and I'm amazed by the amount of electronic no how and knowledge that you have. Just thank God there's mechanics like you in the world that go that extra mile to fix electronics on a car when other people can't, Matt from Michigan
As Ivan over at pinehollow auto diagnostics says no parts required fixed. I feel those are the best kinds of repair. For the customer it shows you actually care about what they need to do to get their car fixed and not just replace parts. And it results in the good kind of come back
Eric, you always ask for comments. I love the way you methodically run crap down. You're always concerned for the customer. I have worked on cars for over 60 years but am too old now to get around unde them and on top. I love your videos and the way you solve problems, from the most ccomplex to the easy trak downs. Keep up the great work from an old man in southern Idaho. Oh, and we don't have that much rust here. I've got a 2014 GMC Savannah with 138,000 on it with only minor surface rust on some of the components. I don't know if I could work in the rust belt. Thanks.
Another great video Mr. O, your method of diagnosis is alway on point simply because you follow the facts of the problem at hand. Good job on the repair, we all like the simple fixes from time to time that require no parts but just time to track down where the problem truly is hiding
Eric, you are absolutely a very knowledgeable mechanic. I remember in one of your earlier videos you mentioned that you were a little weak in electronics. I'm paraphrasing here. I only see strengths in your troubleshooting skills. You are thorough and explain your approach adding why you proceeded in the direction you took. Great job bro.
Sure do enjoy watching your videos, Eric. As silly as it might sound, it's honestly more enjoyable and rewarding than anything episodic on a streamer or television. I found your channel when you did brakes on a gen5 Camaro and been following ever since. I would GLADLY pay more money to my local mechanic if I knew his service was as thorough as yours. I'd gladly pay YOU to work on my car if only you were closer..... Thank you for the video.
Another riveting episode that included an old motor going by that you would not want to step in the exhaust. You have a nose for leaky electrons Mr O. It is a pleasure to watch you operate.
Thank you Eric. At this point when I'm watching your videos, I'm actually starting to keep up and even see where you are going. And that is super rewarding. The thing I've learned is that very often the problem is not the thing at the end of the wire, but somewhere along the wire like a rub spot or a connector. Then it becomes an Ivan no-parts-required repair. I love it. Thanks again!
Eric, you nailed another one again! Someone was in that connector and screwed it a while ago. Something like that doesn't always show up that quick. Nice job. As Ford used to say: Quality is Job 1.
I sure don't understand why you're not the busiest shop in the region as far as diagnostics go. Why would anyone roll the dice at another shop? If I was in your town, there would be nobody touching my vehicles me you and me! Another great, logical "follow-the-evidence" diagnosis!
I didn't know if I've seen that trick before and wasn't paying attention or you just made it make more sense but anyway using the low current test light to check the signal wire is not short of the ground. That's a time saver there! Thanks Eric O
Very cool Eric! I love your demo with the oscilloscope, along with discussion of the source/manufacturer of the ECM and its history. Also the clear explanations you give of each step in the troubleshooting process makes it really engaging and more dramatic than it has any right to be. I imagine if you brought in a sponsor or two you could justify spending even more time making in-depth content for us!
You’re much much more than a “last resort”. People are fed a lot of bs by some shops. You’re not that. You’re the real deal and they should know to come to you first. Great vid. Thank you.
Love you diagnostic skills ! I spent 20 years on the bench! and seen a lot of mechanics that couldn't diagnose there way out of a wet paper bag ! I was one of the brighter ones !
The day of simple car repairs is long gone. Once vehicles got away from carburetors and the word electronic became associated with the operation repair trouble shooting takes a different skill set. Simple "green crusties" is the bane of many repairs. Overall, today's complex vehicle is more reliable only that when a problem arises it is more complicated/challenging to fix. A dedicated mechanic like Eric is a valuable asset in the field.
Absolutely enjoy watching your methodical diagnosis and repair. You are a very rare breed these days, keep up the great work! Get a real kick from your sense of humor. 😂
I worked at Lia Honda when them things were beginning to phase out in 04. Used to see at least 1 or 5 a month getting a new transfer case. The one tech that did them majority, he looked like he should be a guitarist for Green Day. His name is Bob. I for sure, as a remote start tech, will tell you, you will never tie into Speed for any reason for remote start. There is no reason to, if you are just starting the car. Speed for aftermarket add-on gps, collision warning, or data gathering most likely would be what you would most likely see speed wire tamper from. Only wire you may have to tag is a coil or injector for the RPM sensing for starter disengage (tach) on a remote starter. Good stuff though E. You da illest.
Hi ERIC,another good teaching video. The main thingy i got was LOOK at a wiring DIAGRAM.Learn how to read it.Use it like a road map,and start from the sensor out to the ECM.The 1st thing you did was check at the sending unit it was good, the you went after the wires, the cheapo scan thingy worked good enough to give you readings,no need for the big guns. Most of us only have the cheap tools. What you showed us is we can do it without the need for expensive tools sometimes,so thank you,
BINGO! That would explain why that connector was apart long enough for all that trash to accumulate. That was the part of this problem that I could not understand...
Back in the late 70’s to the early 90’s I worked at a local auto-electric shop rebuilding starters, alternators, generators and magnetos. I used to do what you’re doing now but it was on much simpler to work on vehicles trying to diagnose and search down electrical problems, then came along the computer age with ECM’s and fuel injection and then like you complain sometimes old age in bad eye caused me to give it up. I still help a friend or to work on their classic vehicles when they have a problem or they are trying to rewire it I furnish the specialty tools but they do all the work I’ll just tell them what to do 😂. Anyways keep up the good work because I enjoy watching your videos very much. PS it is funny how all mechanic shops have a shop cat we had one ourselves, it was a good mouser. Also it was a good friend of mine’s auto electric shop I just worked part time for him my trade was a fire fighter who love to work on cars.
i worked on my first mice attack truck today, no ac compressor operation due to some hungry critters around the cylinder head temp sensor! Thanks for all your help Eric. You, Ivan and Scannerdanner have made me much more confident when a electrical disaster rolls into the shop!!
You are a lost breed. Just had recall work done on my jeep renegade then I was changing my oil. Noticed 2 of 3 bolts for the new catalytic converter were loose. Keep being conscientious and integrity.
Eric you're the last shop they come to because the others couldn't fix the problem. Seems counter intuitive, why not just go to SMA who can fix it right the first time....Excellent work as always
Another great video Mr. O. Impeccable logic path. As the number of vehicle problems you solve keeps growing, looking back at the issue afterward to surmise how you could have gone more directly to the problem shows your interest in understanding the logic involved and sharpens your ability to make the right calls on future work. I worked with engineers who spoke highly of my "genuine" interest in the projects, and w/ no college degree how I could figure out problems using logistic regression. I was always doing exactly what you did in this video when you looked at the schematic and saw how you could have gone more directly to the problem. I received praise from the engineers for my interest and contributions but scourge from my management for "playing." Old & Gray, retired now, I didn't earn much money, but I have the knowledge I earned, they couldn't take that away. Fine Business young man. ben/ michigan
Diagnosis by signal tracing NOT parts replacement! Very Good Mr. O. When my Dad had his shop in Massachusetts, there were times when other shops brought the "I don't know what's wrong with it," including the parts cannon replacement, vehicles. So ya, I know what you mean. But when your the best like you, the vehicle gets fixed, not passed on to someone else. Thanks for this video.

"Good work isn't cheap and cheap work isn't good." (Eric O., 2023) Amen brother! Another great/enjoyable vid --thanks for sharing!
I believe most people get the exact same treatment as you do, which is messed up.
Or unload the parts cannon.
@@BobSakamoto👍 that's why I drive an old car, it's fixable, just gotta rebuild the engine occasionally 😂
Eric you always are a joy to watch. You make it look easy though I know years of experience and genuine ability have something to do with it.
remember if i can do it so can you, with 60,000 in electronic diagnoses scanners, if not more.
I love the way eric gets so excited when he discovers the problem!
The reason your normally the last option good sir is because you're probably booked to the hilt with all the customers who know you're the go to guy. Awesome work and video as always 👍

I was a Honda tech back in those days , we all hated working on those things , nothing Honda about them except for the logos

I never connected these dots. Man--the late 90s/early 00s were a wild time for carmaker crossovers
Done quite a few unclogging the EGR pipe inside the intake on those.
Mr. O, I keep tellin’ y’all your guesses are 99.8% right 100% of the time. I did the math.
Thanks again for a great video and for lugging all of us around with you. We know it’s a pain, but you have no idea how much you help us out every day! You know, 100% every time!
Mr. O, may I suggest using a sheet music stand for your wiring diagrams. I find it saves a lot of time and walking back. Great videos thank you.
Just a good small laptop is what I use just like Ivan @ PHAD.
What I love best about your videos is the thinking out loud analysis. Who knew logic and reason are helpful in solving problems?
Pulling out a tomato seed: $1. Knowing where to find the seed: Priceless. Good job 🙂
"We're always the last guys to get the car."
Of course you are; it'd be silly to take it to another shop after it's fixed! 🤣
No parts required! Ivan will be proud of you!
You are an amazing trouble shooter Eric. You make difficult work look easy. Love your videos!
So glad Mrs O has become the most supporting actress!
Mr O it's a pat on the back when nobody else can figure it out, they call you. 👌

You and Ivan explain diagnosing electrical problems, so the common Joe can understand. Thank you!!!!
The most satisfying thing you can experience in your life Eric is solving some ones car problem for them!
Love the way you logically attack the problem.
your the Man, trusting is a big factor when taking your vehicle to a shop, you will never be out of work the way you handle your business.
When I started using my mechanic I gave him small but technical jobs to test him that was 2007 I still go there.(he passed my test). He was a one man operation then now he has three on staff & works six days a week & still can't get all his appointments done.
I watch your videos all the time. I don't own a Passport or know anyone who does, but I watched this video from start to finish.
you got to be the best diag mechanic ive ever seen. as a thech myself i watch you every video and learn keep up the good work man
People like you are just getting harder and harder to find. Wicked smart and honest.
With someone else being in there before you being through is ALWAYS the best approach.

Sensational job explaining the logic. You make these look so simple after so many gave tried and failed. Keep up the sensational work.

All that for a seed in a connector somebody else opened up. Wow. But once again, Mr. O., YOU are the Man.
Brilliant work Eric O finding the seed blocking correct contact.
These diags are gold for someone learning to be a driveability tech
On today's episode of last chance garage... 😅 Great job as usual Eric. Very easy to follow and comprehensive diagnostics. You rock!
Yet another enjoyable watch. Steady away and smooth throughout 👌
i always appreciate your camerawork, trying to give us the best view
Your recap at the end of the video was so detailed and helpful for those trying to learn. Thanks
It all makes sense after you explain it, but it would take me forever to get there.
You make it look so easy. Great job, Eric!
No bigger compliment than being the guy to go to when all else fails
I didn't know if I've seen that trick before and wasn't paying attention or you just made it make more sense but anyway using the low current test light to check the signal wire is not short of the ground. That's a time saver there! Thanks
Eric O
Very cool Eric! I love your demo with the oscilloscope, along with discussion of the source/manufacturer of the ECM and its history. Also the clear explanations you give of each step in the troubleshooting process makes it really engaging and more dramatic than it has any right to be. I imagine if you brought in a sponsor or two you could justify spending even more time making in-depth content for us!
You’re much much more than a “last resort”. People are fed a lot of bs by some shops. You’re not that. You’re the real deal and they should know to come to you first. Great vid. Thank you.
I absolutely love your program awesome diagnostics and great content .
A No Auto Parts Acquired repair. Ivan would be proud.
It makes my day knowing that you are an honest guy Eric, and you will not charge the cust.for thangs you did not change out.
Very well done and informative! You sir are one hell of a diagnostics technician!
You never fail to amaze me with your diagnostic skills. Digitals drive me crazy!
Love you diagnostic skills ! I spent 20 years on the bench! and seen a lot of mechanics that couldn't diagnose there way out of a wet paper bag ! I was one of the brighter ones !
The Professor of Automotive EMF slays another
You are excellent. I don't know anybody better than you for electrical
What you showed us is we can do it without the need for expensive tools sometimes,so thank you,
Excellent rundown and troubleshooting! Nice show and tell too where the wire and connector problem was on schematic.
Great work. Follow the facts. Those who “guess” are rarely as good as they think they are.
For all the weird problems you have found, you should write a book! Thanks for another interesting video.
Another fine diagnostic from Eric O. May they keep coming.
Body shop induced problem. That left front fender looks pretty shiny compared to the rest of the car.
Never fails.
Awsome job. I'm learning so much from your positive attitude towards electrical issues.
Dude, you're a Wizard. Each upload amazes me. You're on my Top 3 channels I enjoy
i worked on my first mice attack truck today, no ac compressor operation due to some hungry critters around the cylinder head temp sensor!
Another great clear and complete explanation on tracking down an electrical problem, thanks again Eric.
Honda, GM, Ford, Toyota, Nissan, Dodge should be paying you millions and apply these videos to their technicians
Wish we had or knew of a Technician in our Area that has the Ability or know How to trouble Shoot like you do E O. Nice Job.
Easy diagnosis.. I think not. Glad you could figure that out... Kudos once again Eric...
Ivan would be proud of you no parts required. What no bonus footage😂😂
@Eric you never seem to let me down with the way I learn how to diagnose things your way. Great job
More shops should do videos while doing a repair. Transparency of the process would do much to assuage the customer.
You always amaze me with your electrical talent. I always enjoy your shows.
