They wouldn't care that the repair bill would exceed the value of the car. Glad to see you are putting your customer first. By the way, it is nice to see that you seem to be rather busy. My friend's 2008 Yaris had a similar symptoms just like on this car, the shop that he went through told him that his transmission is dead and they had one lying around for $2k minus the labor, luckily he didn't took that offer and consulted with me first, I scanned his car and it throws out a P0977 Shifting Solenoid circuit B error, and it was just an easy fix, those things are pretty cheap in a 2nd hand parts shop, we found one for just $20 in Ebay and another $30 for a 4L Toyota ATF, his car runs like it used too again and he avoided being scammed.

    Hi Ray, they say a problem aired is a problem shared and Face-book allows this to happen so easily. For me my problem started after being diagnosed with esophagus cancer but it was the 24 hour continuous pain that clouded my better judgement. I did not want to share my problems with anyone else. However I wrote a blog on Face-book and by golly, thanks to the many friends I had met on Face-book, I cannot say thank you enough to those who encouraged me to keep going.
    To you Ray I send the same encouragement, your videos are brilliant not just to us old tech's but think of the young mechanics you are helping in so many ways. You have a fabulous wife and kids, let them support you with the extra strength they can give to you Ray.

  • @michelleshaw337
    @michelleshaw337 7 месяцев назад +96

    I appreciate the ethical analysis of why you’re declining service on this vehicle.
    There’s a point in any vehicle’s life where the cost of keeping it going vastly exceeds the resources that its owner has, and the “value” of the vehicle. That one looks like it’s reaching that point. Not only are there DTCs indicating moderately expensive repairs, but the scope of the oil leaks suggests that it would take a “gasket-and-seals” job to clean up the engine (and if you’re doing the transmission replacement, you might as well replace the rear main seal on the engine, since you’re already in there), and then there’s the suspension work it needs.
    At a guess, I’d wager that the owner can buy a whole new set of problems (er … vehicle) for that money.
    Sorry to hear about there being family drama in your life. It’s not fun to have to deal with that stuff, and yeah, it’s painful as well.

      I remember working for UPS and finding out that they have a hard math for when to stop repairing their fleet of vehicles.
      Something to do with the annual cost of repairs versus the current value of the vehicle.

    • @michelleshaw337
      @michelleshaw337 7 месяцев назад +12

      @@MonkeyJedi99 in a fleet environment like UPS, that's a very reasonable approach to things - basically you amortize the cost of the vehicle over time, which provides a fairly concrete sense of it's "value today", and then when you are evaluating repairs, it's a matter of a ratio between the cost of repair and the book value of the vehicle.
      When we are talking about personal vehicles, it's a bit of a different calculation because personal factors ranging from emotional attachment to the vehicle to the "market value" can come into play.
      Car Wizard (another channel) has a late 80s Ford F150 that the owner is sinking some $4K or more into repairs simply because while it's more than the truck is "worth", there aren't any options out there right now that get a similar vehicle for that money - so it's "worth it" to repair the 80s truck even though it's only in mediocre shape.

      Not long ago that was true. But not any more. Acceptable new cars are no longer available at any price. They are super expensive, extremely poor quality, and they have all that self driving trash technology. You couldn't give me one. They are not safe to drive. I would rather spend $20,000 completely rebuilding an older vehicle than spending $50,000 on a new piece of trash. I was a government fleet mechanic for41 years. I quickly noticed that there was one vehicle that was way more reliable than anything else in the fleet. That was the 4.6L 2V Ford Crown Vic. I have been driving them for the past 30 years. They used to be everywhere, but many of them have been trashed. Finding decent ones is hard to do. I have a 2006 and 2007 Grand Marquis. The '06 has 381,000 miles, the 07 only has 36,000 miles. They are both worth new engines and transmissions when they wear out. So many of them were made that 4.6L 2V engines and AOD transmissions practically grow on trees. I plan on driving these cars for the rest of my life. As new vehicles get more expensive and continue to become more computer than car, the value of used vehicles and parts will continue to go up. New vehicles are simply no longer an option for a great many people, and likely never will be again.

    • @michelleshaw337
      @michelleshaw337 7 месяцев назад

      Every generation has a “favourite” vehicle, and that’s often the car that’s nearly 20 years old (Panther platform is far older than that, having come out in 1979). Often, their proponents will point to how much simpler they are compared to modern vehicles, they’re easier to repair, etc. All of which is valid for some people. I imagine as a former technician, you probably feel more comfortable doing repairs yourself, or having someone do them for you - as long as they can explain what they’re doing to you.
      A lot of people simply aren’t inclined that way. I know enough to understand the gist of what my mechanic tells me, but frankly for most of what my cars need, I rely on the skills of others - I have to. If my mechanic comes to me and says “yeah - your car needs a boatload of work and it’s going to cost way more than the car is worth”, it’s time to replace it. That typically means I replace my cars somewhere around 10-12 years old. I currently have a 2015 Honda CRV - I’ll probably drive it another 4-5 years before it starts needing major repairs. I’ll decide then whether or not I put the money into it, or replace it. (So far, it’s been robust and reliable - is it “lower quality” than previous Hondas? Not to me)

    @johncooper4637 7 месяцев назад +16

    I agree there is an awful lot wrong with the van. That being said, the prices of good used vehicles are still very high. The owner will need to see if it is cheaper to repair, using good parts, or to get a replacement. Years ago replacing a worn out vehicle with a newer one was a no-brainer but not now. I wish the owner luck with what he decides.

    My ex boss had a 2013 WITH A 6 CYL. She bought it new and ran the living crap out of it.(TAXI SERVICE) When she took it out of service it had the jittery-toyota-transmission-syndrome. But she decided to "junk" it because it needed 2 new Catalytic converters to the tune of about $5k. She didn't think it was worth it, and she sold it to an employee for $300. It had 350,000 miles on it. He took it, had the cats done, gave it a tune up, and sold it for.. Get this... $11,000!!!!!! No joke. The Toyota mini vans, even super high mileage and broken sliding door motors and cables, are GOLD.

I was given a Husky 3/8 drive socket set for Christmas in 1971, one socket cracked but all the others are still good and are still used. A few years ago the ratchet broke internally, I didn't want to throw it away so I bought one on Ebay and swapped out the internals. I still use it often, despite having many other ratchets, mostly S-K at my disposal. I can pretty much tell a story about every tool in my box, what car I was working on when I bought it, etc. That Husky set got me through minibikes, a motorcycle and many cars in similar condition to that minivan.

      I have had a mechanic tell me he "could" repair my car, but also that I should not put more money into it.
      After he explained, I agreed and took it back to trade in (for $50) on my next car.

      Sometimes its cheaper to repair than replace a new vehicle is very expensive average payment 350.00 per month for years or a used vehicle you may be buying someone's problems if the other parts are OK I'd swap the trans

      @@davidcraven277 On this specific vehicle, it has transmission AND engine leaks, as well as front end suspension parts to replace.
      And Ray didn't even do a frame inspection or check on anything related to the rear axle.
      Based on the interior, that one has had a pretty hard life.

      Just for giggles, I'd be curious if some Lucas transmission goop would affect things at all. Then again, I don't know what the failure mode could be, but interesting nonetheless. Even then there's everything else that's wrong of course.

Sometimes you just have to make them "non gratis" and keep them out of your life. Easier said then done, especially with family! All the best to you and yours Ray. Keep on keeping' on! 😁

    hey sir toyota technician here, the orange rtv is factory sealant for transmissions and transfer cases, most of the time its the plug on top of the transmission or sometimes lack there of that is actually leaking and that sketchy shifting of the front wheels while braking and going over bumps is worn out lower control arm bushings. old highlanders and all siennas all have the control arm bushing issue at higher mileage.

    i love your channel. i have no knowledge of cars for the most part but the way you present each vehicles problem, your thoughts on the problem and possible fix and showing the fix - explaining "in english" etc. I understand the methidology. I love the banter and thinking out loud. you have a great sence of humor. Good mix for doing this. The German voice is to fun and "what is problem".. love that to. Thank you!!

    Most likely a valve body issue on this transmission. I've replaced quite a few valve bodys in the U151e transmissions over the years. Not really much that goes wrong with these other than the valve bodys. Sonnex sells a remanufactured valve body for these. Always best to reset the adaptive values for the transmission too.

      Why are you even thinking about transmission issues when the rest of the car is in the state that it is? Also in the state that it is, how much money do you think the owner has if it has been left to the state that it is now? It has done its time. Like Ray, I would not touch it. It is a money pit. It may be all they can afford but to do more work on this is to rob the customer. Retired mechanic in Land Down Under.

      Yeah the U151e in my Lexus was the absolute biggest piece of junk transmission shifting wise. Great car but I HATED that transmission. Installed a new updated valve body, OEM fluid, reset the TAPS and still had shift flare. Total hunk of junk. Sad because the 3.3 V6 is a legendary Toyota engine…

    • @lastotallyawesomebleach204
      @lastotallyawesomebleach204 4 месяца назад

      I think the trans fluid got low and the owner filled It back up with the wrong stuff, as it started working properly when he changed the fluid. If the transmission doesn't act up again after being driven for a couple of weeks, I think it would be worth fixing the front end issue and stopping the leaks.

    I just did a trans service on my 2005 ES330 with 210,000 miles. (Same engine and transmission) I service it every 50 to 60 K miles. It still shifts as new. The real Toyota T-IV transmission fluid is darker red color with a-slightly purple tint than what was observed in the video...
    Unfortunately it appears that this vehicle has not had regular and periodic maintenance. BTW the valve cover gaskets are a PITA to replace...

He was trying to prove to everyone what a good deal it was and the gearshift fell off in his hand, this was the first day he bought it, lol. That thing fell apart so fast it was hilarious, don't think he kept it more than a couple months.

    i own a 2003 honda odyssey, a year ago the transmission went out on my wife, she was using our van to commute back and fort to work. i had this bright idea to go to pick a part (LKQ) and purchase me a used transmission for 450.00 dollars and paid some one else $ 150,00 to remove it from the odyssey we picked. it took me 3 days to remove the old transmission and install the one we got from pick apart. with all that work my van was up and running again i was realy happy considering it was totally shut down from previous. anyways the wife didnt like it. because it had a slight jerking on the second gear, so finally i bought a rebuild one and its running perfect now. it has been a year. the moral of my story is if you need a transmission or engine do not get it from the junkyard cause theres no telling it will work properly. just get a rebuild one it may cost a little bit more but it only takes one time to install.
