    When everything is a hammer 😂😂😂 the only sad thing is that I can't help but feel that it won't be long before another wheel / axle lets go. And no Ray, not trying to take a cheap shot at you, I 100% understand commercial realities. If the owner of the vehicle doesn't want to do a full rebuild then whatever happens next is ultimately on them.

    • @mtebaldi1
      @mtebaldi1 11 месяцев назад

      Never a budget repair on safety. That said Ray knows what he's doing.

    • @frazzledude
      @frazzledude 11 месяцев назад +1

      Being cheap and on a tight budget is usually much more expensive than spending the money to do it right the first time. For example, the owner of this truck is probably not going to spend the money for a front wheel alignment. Those tires already need to be replaced, but if he doesn't do the alignment, he will just spend a lot more money on tires. It costs more up front to do a complete and thorough job, but that is what credit cards are for.

    • @hot_wheelz
      @hot_wheelz 11 месяцев назад +4

      @@frazzledude yep being cheap does cost more in the long run but if things are tight enough that it's a choice between keeping a roof over your head, clothes on your back, food on the table and the keeping the lights on then I also understand that from a practical standpoint sometimes people simply have to do what they have to do and try to ride out the rough patches until things improve. I am not about to give the owner of this vehicle a hard time for needing to make difficult decisions because we don't know their situation and circumstances. It's easy to sit in a glass house throwing stones, criticising others but honestly if you haven't walked a mile in the guys shoes then you've got little business telling them how they ought to live their life. One thing about Ray that I appreciate is that he understands such realities, and he does his best to make the vehicle as safe as possible given the available budget knowing that if he doesn't do the job then someone else will only likely in a far less safe manner.

    Oh I can feel my old instructor spinning in his grave. Using old brake pads with new brake discs (rotors, in the US, right?) is apparently an unforgivable offence. Never understood why and I’ve done it under protest, sometimes, without any problems.
    It’s good to see another professional do it, probably also under protest, given the age of the truck and the extensive parts list. Sometimes you’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do.

    • @duncancremin1708
      @duncancremin1708 11 месяцев назад +3

      Yup. A few minutes later, he clarified exactly that.

    • @theundergroundlairofthesqu9261
      @theundergroundlairofthesqu9261 11 месяцев назад

      In the US, rotor or disc.
      In theory, you want brand new machined metal and brand new pad to get to know each other, but I'm not the only one here to have done a "pad slap" here and there, I'm sure. I'm not sure, however, what's so 'orrible about used pads on new rotors. Bedding pads, as I understand it, is about breaking in the rotor surface/depositing the nice layer of brake pad on them. Of course, a used pad may not be square/level/evenly worn, too.

Oh well, whatever floats your boat I guess.

    It's good you're replacing the whole caliper since the force that bent the bracket most likely damaged the piston seals. That happened with my 2018 Mazda 3, the wheel came off because the mechanic forgot to tighten the lug nuts. We had to replace the wheel, the fender and the lower control arm knuckle. A month later we noticed the caliper was leaking brake fluid so we had to get that replaced as well. Luckily, it was all covered by the garage's insurance.

    "Danger Ranger" A friend of mine had a true Danger Ranger. It was a 4wd 89 standard cab with a 4 banger and a 5 speed, and it had a few scary issues. The front wheel u-joints were trashed, so it made horrific noises when he used 4wd, the driver rear cab mount bracket on the frame (right under the driver's butt) was rotted completely away (absolutely nothing left of it, and the frame was cracked where it kicked up behind the cab on the same side. He ignored all of it, because it was just a beater. Literally. He beat that thing like a rented mule both on and off road.

    Customer States, "Wheel Just Fell Off While Driving". Someone I know, had a horrible front end on their Honda Accord. Turns out she was hitting the railroad tracks as like 50mph, catching air and crossed those tracks twice a day. Had to spend a few $k on the front end being completely rebuilt.

    It always cracks me up at the amount of money people spend on lift kits, wheels, tires, stereo, various other accessories........but they are missing necessities like LUG NUTS 🤦‍♂🤣

    On parts you can't find at a parts store you can find them at a salvage yard. Things like those bearing bolts, seal retainer, dust cover and such.
    If you have a you pull it yard it may take pulling the parts you are after to find good parts. Things like bolts sometimes don't come out as usable. You might to want picking up extra bolts and such just to keep on hand.
    There are other things that can be handy to keep around. Things like relays, lug nuts are things I collect when at the yard. They don't cost much and can save you a lot of time searching for them when you need it.

    Would they have heard this failure coming days/weeks/months before, did it happen all at once, or was there an outside force? At the end. Hearing the sound in the cabin, no they didn't hear it coming.

      CV have a particular clongin noise when they start to go, most noticeable when you take a turn and hear the kun kun noise, as the get worse you feel in the wheel, if you let it go the vibration will work shit off, this guy took a Fubar CV offroad

      The louder the bearing noise, the more volume is added to the thumper speakers, thus obtaining maximum wear from the bearings !!!

    I wonder if the extra loud exhaust, plus extra power stero were louder than the failing wheel bearing? a case of more is less.

    Great Video Ray, I have a lot of respect for the rangers.
    I had a 1983 Ford Ranger 4 banger 4 speed, 2 wheel drive and around 36 MPG if I managed to take my foot off the floor. That thing was next to indestructible! I always was pushing it to get into work on time and I'd come screaming in the parking lot ( which was full ) so Instead of driving to the end to park in the field I would hit a nice angle on the ditch, jump into the field, lock up the brakes and slide into my spot.
    When I traded it in, the salesman at the remote used lot had to drive it a mile to the main lot, he blew a headgasket on the way!
    Considering the way I drove it and the punishment I put it through I was surprised it made it to 170,000 with nothing but maintenence items. Best running Ford I had ever owned. I know at least through 2007 they were still pretty awesome trucks as my daughter bought an 07 with the 6 cyl, auto.
    3 years later she sold it for $1000 less than she had paid for it ( sold for $6000.00 ) and it was still great looking and ran smooth as hell!

    That torsion bar twist was a cheap way to lift those 90s mini trucks. The biggest problem with doing that was that while it did lift the truck, it reduced the amount of up travel that the spring would allow, since it was already twisted up as far as it would go.

    I always use Never-Seize On bolts when I do a job like that. Paid off a few times. Even on wheel nuts when torquing them down. Saved my skin a few years ago.
