    Years back I worked on a DeLorean. After driving it a bit to troubleshoot some issues, I came to the conclusion that time travel wasn't the most unbelievable part of the Back to the Future franchise. That title goes to getting a DeLorean up to 88 mph. They're a cool car, but seriously underpowered.

    • @johnnodge4327

      Back in the 90s a friend had a DMC12, which I did a lot of work on. It was mix of parts from different manufacturers, and reliability was shocking. The engine was garbage, the gearbox was garbage, the suspension was actually pretty good being Lotus based.
      It was a seriously underpowered car, but looks amazing.
      The one I worked on used to have a habit of not starting after a trip to the pub. It was amazing how many patrons of the pub would say, "it's the flux capacitor mate", as they walked past while I had my head under the engine cover.

    • @792slayer
      @792slayer 11 месяцев назад +12

      @@johnnodge4327 weird. That's exactly the problem I was chasing. Turns out there's a spring loaded plunger in the fuel control unit that shuts when the car is turned off. It's supposed to keep pressure in the system to avoid vapor lock, but the o-ring sealing it frequently goes bad due to poor deburring in the passage. I second the handling though. It really did handle well and I always loved the looks.

      I had a similar experience with one that was only a couple of years old and I agree the only way to get that car to 88mph was to drive it off a high cliff.

    Great video Ray. Loved the diagnostic session, looks like it was super fun. To clarify, this was my personal Delorean years ago. I personally converted it myself and it was later sold to a collector in Los Angeles. He owned it for a while and it was then sold via Ebay to who I believe is the current owner now located in Florida. Sadly, there have been a ton of alterations done to it since that time (some better than others, but nothing that was a part of my original personal build).
    As the armchair experts have pointed out, this car is absolutely NOT a screen used car used in the original BTTF Trilogy. I totally understand how you probably heard different from the current owner. It's a real shame that some people need to overstate the history of a car that is already awesome enough as it is.
    I have made a Delorean that was screen used. I built Seth Macfarlane's Delorean Time Machine which was used in A Million Ways to Die in the West, right along with Doc Brown himself. So, I'm certainly not complaining.
    Keep up the great work.

    Just a "heads up" Ray, since the owner has converted the power supply to the Mr. Fusion, use caution when priming the flux capacitor. These are known to create a false positron field. If this happens, when the smoke clears, you will notice your family is 50 years older. No, the wife unit will not be happy. To correct this, go rent a positron emitter of the 5 gigawatt varity and slowly back feed to flux capacitor. Yes, this will create a large magnetic pulse. When the department of energy guys show up, deny everything. They will place you on the no fly list but this is a small price to pay to make the family happy again. Good luck.

    fun fact about the early deloreans is that the early models had a cover over the gas cap and the later ones you had to open the hood to fuel up. In the movie, the speedometer was changed out to show higher speed because the stock one only went to 80 or 85 IIRC

      Odd frame of reference questions:
      Would the time machine still initiate if it was on a trailer being pulled at 88MPH by, say, a Silverado driven by a Florida mechanic?
      If not, is it that the wheels have to be spinning at the 88MPH rate? If so, perhaps an externally driven roller system like that on a dynamometer would do the job.
      What if you combinge both ideas, giving you a trailer that could spin the DMC's wheels at the same speed as road speed, and it was all pulled by the Florida mechanic's Silverado?

      @MonkeyJedi99 the reason the DeLorean had to go 88 specifically is because if the wormhole that travels you through time only lasts .10717 seconds then to get a DeLorean through in the right time without being too early that the car gets screwed up or too late that part of the car gets cut off you would need to move at 88mph to get the car through the wormhole with the car having a length of 4.216 meters you would need to move at 39.3395 m/s or exactly 88 mph basically for the sake of safety so I guess if you could get the car to 88 by some external force maybe the time circuits were only set to open the wormhole when the car hit 88mph so it wouldn't work on a trailer but being pushed?

    • @MonkeyJedi99
      @MonkeyJedi99 11 месяцев назад

      @@myacidninjatheamazing1025 I do recall that.
      But is still doesn't answer the question of if the car has to hit 88, or the spinning of the wheels, or both.

    • @MonkeyJedi99
      @MonkeyJedi99 11 месяцев назад

      @@myacidninjatheamazing1025 I do appreciate this additional data!
      This is worth pondering.
      Maybe an open trailer? Maybe a tow line that has a quick release triggered to 88mph?
      So many questions, so few test rigs...

    Great video. In their day the Delorean was a crap parts bin car. Great looking car but that's it. In the end when John Delorean ran out of investor money he had to declare bankruptcy. The US Treasury went after him for fraud. The cars were built in Ireland. He made the headlines about 40 years ago. Was married to a beautiful supermodel. Very talented engineer, the rest is history.
