ABS, Airbag, TPMS Warning ON! (Safety System REPAIR)

  • This chevy Malibu came in with very high mileage and several problems. There were several warning lights on and multiple systems were found to be faulty. The anti lock brake systems was found to be faulty due to a rusted and damaged wheel bearing. The wheel speed sensor was unable to detect the tire speed due to a faulty pickup magnet within tone ring. A quick wheel bearing change solved the ABS communication problem. Further inspection found that there were several Airbag system faults and a RECALL was also uncovered. The TPMS light was on due to a faulty sensor in the tires. A tire removal and sensor replacement and reprogram turned of the TPMS warning light and the system began operating as designed. Unfortunately the recall must be performed at the dealer and we were not able to complete all repairs.

So nice to see a honest repair shop. My wife had her oil changed at Toyota yesterday and they installed new wipers front and rear plus did a front end alignment after rotating the tires. They stuck her with a bill over $300 and she wasn’t consulted about any of it. The oil and filter are covered under the warranty we bought. I called them up and said the wiper blades were free along with the alignment because of no notification to decide if we wanted their services. The shop foreman and the three owners were in a large argument so I told my wife to just leave without paying the bill. I took it back today and confronted one of the owners who reduced the bill to cost on the wiper blades to $60 which I paid but told the service manager to never pull that trick on my wife again.

Good morning Ray. My dad ran an independent shop back in the 1970’s. I recall the day they got a computer balancing machine. I was 12 and I watched the demonstration the guy put it in. A couple hours later the owner showed up and my dad told this is so easy my son can do it. The owner did not believe him so I showed him how to use. Funny thing is the balancing machine have not changed much in 45 years.

For the Autel Mx sensors you must first "program" them. this can be off the car before you install them or after. After that you can trigger each sensor in its spot and then "relearn" them to the car. Also, once you get one bad sensor it usually means the battery is bad so you might as well replace them all.

When I worked for an auto parts store I discovered a clamp that is designed to go on the strut rod to hold the hood or trunklid up so you don't have to use a pole of some sort to hold the lid up. I have found it to be a very handy tool because I don't have to work around the pole holding the lid open.

TPMS can be super frustrating, but I for one definitely appreciate knowing a tire is losing pressure or going low while driving!
I'm fine keeping an eye on the tires normally, but frankly I'll skip it at -40 in blowing snow!
We also get a LOT of temperature variance here in Calgary, up to 40-50C temp swings in the space of hours.

Pretty sure u should use the cone for the balancing machine on the face side of the rim (with alu ones). The plastic big ring you used is for steel rims. Also watch out with where you start when putting the tyre back on when using tpms sensors. The tyre can break the sensor if it's pulled down/inwards. The last spot to go on the rim should be around where the sensor is.

Always enjoy watching your videos. Surprised how people still attach too many items to their key ring and put pressure on their ignition switch when the key is inserted to run the vehicle. Good way to wear down the key and switch. But, again, always enjoy watching you progress with diagnosis of issues. Take it easy.

Ray if you sell a denim collared shirt with a nice logo on it I would buy it. Put a Silverado on it with Rays repairs or something else. This would be cool

"Almost no rust down here .. good!" I'd say, looking at a vehicle with 194K miles and no undercarriage rust is amazing! And that's why I don't need TPMS, what an ordeal!

A malibu with random colored panels is always a sure sign of someone who listens to rap and spends all day on social media.
The kind of guy who rolls his window down to make sure people see him driving, and hear him listening to music.
A real hero in his own mind.

I was laughing a bit when you were having problems with the new TPMS sensor. You have to program the Autel ones at zero psi for future reference. I found that out myself. Replaced all four on my 07 Trailblazer. Glad to see you back Ray!!!

I like how you remove the last bolt holding in the wheel bearing/hub and it about falls right out. You would never see that up here in the northeast.

Good video overall but cleaning the rust off a brake rotor right above a brand new wheel bearing that's open? Not good. The new tire mounting and balancing machines are a fine addition. Now where will the alignment machine go?

I thank you Ray for showing how the Autel TPMS tool works. I have a Snap on TPMS3 that no longer can be updated and I was considering the Autel. Now I made my decision: NO. I will be watching for a TPMS5 on Ebay.

The best way to fix the tire pressure sensors is to go old school with old style valves and a piece of electrical tape. The sensors are outrageously expensive. The cheap Chinese ones are garbage. I always look at my tires when I approach my car and pay attention to how the car handles.

I believe that junkyard nose corresponds with the pre-tensioner and active restraint deployment codes. The flashing tire warning seems to indicate that one dead TPMS sensor. Intermitten wheel speed sensor is a Malibu thing.
