Damaged Lower Intake! Plastic Threads! Jeep Wrangler 3.6 Pentastar Pt 2 • Damaged Lower Intake! ...
Today we have a Jeep Wrangler Sahara with the 3.6 Pentastar engine. The customer states engine oil is leaking and it is a large leak. Be placed the jeep in service mode and began the inspection. It was found that engine oil was leaking off of the valve covers, after lifting the jeep, we found more oil on the back side of the engine and on the transmission. The intake manifold was removed and then the lower intake manifold was removed. Engine oil was found pooling up in the valley between the cylinder heads. The oil cooler assembly was then removed and inspected for leak sources. The o rings were found to be deformed and leaking engine oil.

It amazes me how many shops will put a car back together after making things worse and offer nothing to their customers except, “Have a nice day”. Your shop is showing the work they it does…literally. No question that you care about the repeat customer. I remember back in the day, I think it was Ford, the slogan, “Quality is job one”. You definitely take that one to heart. You do take some shortcuts, but it never cuts into the level of your work…and it’s entertaining.😁

Ray ! This design is a NIGHTMARE! (but a GOLDMINE for a service Tech) 😂 I can NOT believe how hard it is to remove that passenger side valve cover. The driver's side wasn't that easy either. This repair gave me FLASHBACKS of changing out KNOCK SENSORS on GM engines. I saw your hesitation about replacing the oil cooler, probably due to $$$. However, just like the KNOCK SENSORS I mentioned, the labor costs involved in a second(or THIRD) teardown make this job VERY EXPENSIVE.
GOOD CALL on your part for the aluminum oil cooler housing.

@@davidbaize4825 Part of the benefit of being able to comment on a video is to educate - and I don't mean that condescendingly. Ray tends to get down on the Pentastar in his videos, because he has worked on a few bad ones, but they really are a great engine. Good power, good fuel economy, good longevity, smooth and quiet. Relatively easy to work on. Every engine has good things and bad things. The "bad" things with the Pentastar are the oil cooler - which is a pretty simple fix - and cam lobe wear on some of them. That's a harder fix, but also not catastrophic. It doesn't happen to many of them. This engine is literally in millions of vehicles on the road now. It is in its 14th year of production with only one major revision - rare in terms of engines these days. Many of these engines will go well beyond 200k miles with minimal issues. Every mechanic has his biases. Ray originally insulted Fords as much as anything - but his friendship with Arod from Powerstroke Tech Talk has caused his opinion to change a bit. Anyway, buy whatever you like, but taking one youtube mechanic's word is not the best option. See scotty kilmer, for example.

    Pentastar engine…🤦🏻‍♂️
Our shop has performed several of these oil cooler replacements. We’ve used an all aluminum Dorman cooler and it leaked. It was determined their O rings were cheap (probably Chinese knock off?) We reverted to the Chrysler cooler since the part was revised and used their O rings. It’s a lot of work to access this part, I certainly hope this works out for Ray. I’ve seen him use the Dorman cooler on other Pentastar engine repairs.

Back in my younger days we started a racing club that would race street rods at the drag strip about fifteen miles from us. When we would meet in one of the local towns and drive where all the locals would cruise on weekends. When doing this we would have rubber chickens and throw them into other members cars when passed the or ended up next to each other at a stoplight. We also did a thing with pint jars and tropical fish. That we set on the center line of the street at the stoplights and either we put one down or picked it up, depending on if one was there or not. I thought about doing that with the girls we riding with us but we all decided to nix that in a hurry because of the trouble factor.

I recently did this exact job on my friend’s 2015 Wrangler. Both valve covers were leaking but the there was something bigger leaking as evident from below, just like this Sahara. I tore down the intake manifolds and found lots of oil in the valley too. They had upgraded to the aluminum oil filter housing a year prior. I originally was diagnosing and repairing a 5V ref intermittent fault that I was able to trace to the oil pressure sender. The oil cooler was leaking oil between the cooler and the housing, not from the housing unit itself. Those Dorman figure 8 replacement seals are crap. OEM seals for the housing and cooler are red. I noticed how stiff the Dorman figure 8 seals were compared to OEM. As soon as you turned the cooler sideways, oil poured out of it. Also, the Sahara’s driver side valve cover was replaced with, what appears to be a Fel-pro gasket kit, as their spark plug gaskets are brown. The OEM valve cover gaskets and cam sensor seals are black, as seen on the passenger side. The Fel-pro cam sensor gasket is blue as seen on the driver side. Therefore, only the driver side valve cover was previously attempted to be fixed. Be sure to replace that PCV valve as that’s part of the problem under that valve cover. Great work!!

204th! Have a great Monday Ray and your super wife unit. And that also goes for the new employees. Not a Jeep fan. And watching your efforts to diagnose let alone fix it was a nightmare and bolstered my opinion of the brand. I wish you all the best in fixing this mess. Roger in Pierre South Dakota

When you said the engineers made something easy for a mechanic at 3:30 I knew you were in for it. You pushed your luck taking connectors loose saying it would be "easy peazy."
Then karma bit taking the rt cover off.
In the'80s engineers would come down to our hangar floor and confer with mechanics on best ways for mods or special repairs.
We've been replaced by cad programs so the engineers never have to go out of their cubicle.
Keep up the good work Ray.

I love watching your videos. I just want to give you and FYI. I did the passenger valve cover gasket on my 2014 wrangler last month. To get to that lower PCV bolt remove the fender flare and wheel liner. It makes it a whole lot easier to access the bolt without removing the battery tray and fuse box.

Can't wait to see it all go back together, all back together and break-cleaned off and tested for oil leaks.....sure is a beautiful Jeep though...I hope the customer plans to keep it for a long time!

At rear of left valve cover, that’s the PCV valve. If you pull fender liner you can get lower bolt out. Upper can be removed w/o pulling battery. There should be 2 bolts/screws holding it in.
