Seeing the tiny people unit in the shop warms my heart. That's one thing you would have never had working for other people. The kids will remember these times fondly when they get older.
My dad used to work construction and mostly out of town. I'll never forget when I was 5 and he got me from kindergarten and took me to a jobsite with him to pickup something from a local job he was on. It was something so casual to him, but meant the world to me getting to see what dad did.

always important to expose the little ones to the many toxic automotive fluids found on the shop floor builds up their tolerances to poisonous materials making it safer for them. who wouldn't let their child belly ride a shop stool after all how many sharp medal edges can be around to slam their little head into. if you think about it the odds of that jack slipping allowing the rear spring to go flying with his daughter ten feet from it must be in the millions hardly worth considering really. Ray and the wife unit have my vote for redneck Florida hillbilly parents of the year. all hating aside, do you really think it is a good idea to let a child run around playing in a workplace environment?

My dad was a diesel mechanic who worked his way up from the shop floor to shop manager for Cummins back in the day. By the time I was 8 or 9, he was the service manager and if he had to go in on Saturday or Sunday for some reason, he let me tag along. One of my favorite times was when there was a fire engine in one of the bays, and dad explained what all of neat machines and tools for servicing and rebuilding the big engines did. Sometimes there were a few guys working, and in a pinch dad would jump in and get his hands dirty if he needed to.

My dad ran a retread shop back in the 60's and 70's. He would take me to the shop with him on Saturdays. I loved that time and I still remember the smells. One thing I remember fondly is when they would receive a load of new tires. Dad would stand in the truck and roll the tires (like bowling almost) into the shop. There was a turn after a number of feet and when he threw the tires they would go around the corner to the guy waiting for them. That is one of the coolest things I have seen, even to this day. Those tires rolled like they were guided missiles.

This is a VERY familiar feeling video, considering I spent the last several months fighting rusty GM undercar components on my 08 Uplander minivan. All the stuck parts, the seized bolts and nuts, and WOW the crustiness of things. Reciprocating saw definitely got a workout in my workshop this year. In Oklahoma now so hopefully it won't ever get that way again, and now that everything (well almost everything, still gotta do rear hubs and shocks) is done, it'll be easier to do next time if there needs to be a next time for all those parts.

No criticism but I wonder if it would be better to fix the engine problem first before installing all the other parts in case you find something fatal. I’ve had that happen with one of my junkers where after throwing a bunch of suspension parts into the car my mechanic found fatal frame rust. I wished he had found that first.

The engine isn't fatal, it's just stretched timing chains. Very common in 3.6 ltr alloytechs.

Thanks for the videos. They provide a look at what mechanics go through and why the cost of repair is what it is.

Hello Again Ray, as I mentioned in an earlier Comment, your work can be dangerous and that's why I suggest that you never work totally alone. I suggest that you always have someone in the shop or your office who can come to your aid if you become seriously injured. I was glad to see that your wife was at the shop with you. Stay safe!

Am I watching Rainman Ray's Repairs on RUclips or a big budget movie? The new intro is slick! You're a bigger man than I because there would have been a bunch of "BLEEPS" in my video. Love seeing the (or hearing) the family while you work. That's awesome...best part about going on your own. Thanks for sharing, can't wait to see what's next.

nothings hurts more than a bite to the finger nail...especially near the cuticle.....that's the one thing I hate about impact wrenches, they have that snap back at the beginning or the end of the trigger pull...gotta watch out for those bites

Ray, I have always been very mechanically inclined but have never really ventured out into the DIY garage so to speak ( Don't have a garage). But with the cost of labor climbing rapidly for even small jobs like brake pad and rotor replacements on the 2011 Chrysler town and country turd , I have been doing my own repairs and saving a lot of money . You are an inspiration to people who can, but never bothered to try. Normally I would pay whatever price I was quoted for brakes or sensor replacements not knowing just how easy some of these jobs are. I'm not saying all repairs are easy, troubleshooting the issues is usually by far the hardest part over the wrenching. I think the biggest issue was trusting myself to do a job and do it right. So far I have changed out the thermostat, oil pressure sensor, rear brake pads and rotors, back up camera and changed out the plugs and coils. All of this possible due to watching your videos, even though you might not have done any work to my particular van the process is usually very similar and it lets me know what my limits are with a floor jack and some stands. I appreciate your efforts in filming everything you do , maybe one day you can get your micro units ( kids) to start filming the process for you so you can do those 2 handed jobs easier. Keep up the good work!
