- Part 1 - DA-62 familiarization and Flight Prep for North Atlantic Crossing.
The biggest #generalaviation Flight I’ve ever flown! Austria to Canada.
Proudly associated with ForeFlight: www.foreflight.com/flightchops
In this multi-part series, the largest general aviation project in FlightChops history, ride along with us as we team up with the Diamond Aircraft ferry crew and act as pilot flying on delivery of a new DA-62 light twin aircraft from Vienna, Austria to the Canadian base in London, Ontario Canada.
In this episode we get familiarized with the DA-62 prior to heading to Diamond Aircraft’s factory in Austria where we meet with Martin and Micke and get some further training on the DA-42 that Micke will be flying in tandem with us back to Canada.
During our initial “big briefing” as I’m calling it. we discovered a great deal of the flight will be IMC which presents a great opportunity to further refine my #IFR flying. We relied a great deal on ForeFlight for the mission planning and as a backup throughout the journey.
I also made a point to test out over-the-ear and in-ear headsets while getting familiar with the DA-62. The Bose ProFlight in-ear headset ended up being incredibly comfortable and the noise cancelling was far superior to what I expected was possible from an in-ear set in a piston aircraft.
As the journey unfolds, we will release some awesome extended footage to Patrons between each consecutively published episode.
Keep an eye out as we release each #oceancrossing episode back to back!

FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

Very cool Steve! Feeling my GA nerves starting to twitch now. 😂
Looking forward to the series.
Thanks my friend! Let's get you up in a warbird when you're in Canada next :)
Or you visit us at Diamond😉 Du är välkommen☺️
@@FlightChops Absolutely!! That would be so awesome.
@@MickeLang That would also be AWESOME!
@@FlightChops I want to see that video!
Phrases I never expected to hear on this channel: "A Eitrige und a 16er Blech". Love it. And the video.
hahahahaha😉
Translation?
16:01 and the "16er blech" is referring to the beverage you would expect to go with that meal
This is my boy 😁 🛩 Looking forward to the next episode 😁 and next time I will do the sightseeing 🎶 ⛪ ☀ Greetings from Vienna ☀ Micke Mama 🤗
Greetings from Steve's Mama😅
The moms have met! Look out! :)
I am a huge diesel fan. Their efficiency, performance, reliability and simplicity (relative) are all great. Having them on a GA aircraft with that level of automation is just the top shelf. And knowing guys like these are involved with building your plane is also satisfying. You know it's done right.
Yes, I heard "common rail",?????? Diesel!!!!!! I had a Jeep Liberty CRD on diesel, so hence. Wow, what an airplane!!!!! Great instructor!
brilliant....i was on the edge of my seat... your structure and editing is awesome.
So glad you enjoyed it Simon :)
I love Diamond. I love how they are at the front of aircraft engineering and safety. Super excited for this series.
just wish their twins didn't cost the same as a 5 year old turboprop...
If I could only afford this plane.
3:50 it sounds like a TDI Golf with an exhaust 🤣
I worked at the FBO you see in the beginning - your arrival intro Canada! Cheers to Frobisher Bay Touchdown Services!!
great service there☺️
Ah, shame I missed you - greetings fom LOXN!
This is gold! already my favorite series to watch in 2022!
He goes in and orders a Eitrige und a 16er Blech. What a lad xD
😜
@@MickeLang Du host in Buckl Brot vagessn :P
Macht Diamond eigentlich Werksführungen?
@@justfabulous3941 hahahha, ja machen wir aber derzeit natürlich nicht :/
Brill,as always waiting to get outdoors ,persistin down here in sw England, cheers.
Great job Steve! Thanks.
Love the ending... "Here is an active volcano..." 😂
Thanks for watching to the end :)
The automatic run-up was impressive.
+Wow, the stick looks a lot like Battlestar Galactica!
"Bidi bidi bidi what's up, 'Buck?"
Those engines really look like a game changer in the workload for flying single pilot multi. Excited to learn more about the airplanes on your trip!
That'd be an absolute blast! I've always loved the DA42, and now the 62! I'll be looking forward to each episode!
I like Micke and Martin. Great video... thanks for sharing
The automatic RUN-UP is fantastic....
Thanks😁
@@MickeLang You'll have to deliver mine to Australia. All I need is that every illusive lotto win. :)
This series is going to be AMAZING
More than incredible footage, Steve! Thanks!
I love Diamond's aircraft.
"Welcome to Canada."
FlightChops: Thanks man. I live here.
Haha - yeah - I think Martin was enjoying the irony.
I'm glad you got to visit the town I was born in and where these beautiful aircraft are built, Wiener Neustadt!
WOW........Thanks for this experience
What great footage of Vienna. Thanks for the great work!
I loved these last two videos they are great. Really reminds me of when I first discovered this channel a few years ago.
"Controlled dehydration." Lmao. Never heard that before. I'm gonna use it eventually
Can confirm it works! I normally can't go 3 hours without needing to pee - but I followed what the guys did in terms of "fluid consumption" for this trip, and managed to never even be uncomfortable for any of the ~25 hours logged - in some cases it was ~5 hours before I saw a bathroom.
Man it's been decades since I visited Vienna. Thanks for sharing your footage of it. That city is timeless it seems, looked the same as it did when I was there in the mid-90's.
I'm just gonna say, I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS SO MUCH
Awesome..! Keep us updated and God speed..!
Great start. ready for ep. 2
Excited to watch this Steve! Love these productions.
Well done Steve. I’d say you earned your way onto the crew!
I am just totally jealous. That is a really impressive machne. You have gone so far beyond me, I'm just staring wistfully at the horizon.
Really looking forward to seeing this trip!
So cool! Can’t wait to see the rest!
I'm so excited to start my multi training in the DA42. It is just such an amazing plane.
Martin and Micke are atop my short list of fave Aviators on RUclips, glad to see you joining them for a trip ! Fly ON !
I do my training at the DFC. And I really wanted to see you guys when I was flying this is so wonderful!!
Vienna is a gorgeous city. Modern and classy. Great video! Love the Diamond aircraft.
Ah, how much I love it to see two of my favourite channels merged, and all of a sudden the canadian roaming around in my home country! Awesome video!
Just started my CPL on diamond aircraft... Loving every minute of it so far!
Love Vienna been about 12 times but never for more than a day !! Hope you enjoyed it, breakfast is usually amazing in Austria !!! Love the Diamonds, graet adventure, I can not believe how far your flying has come since I started watching you, great content as always
I would have to say that Vienna Austria has to be one of my bucket list places. At least you gave us a culture flash though your purpose was the flight and prep.
Great job on this one, looking forward to the rest!
Great job Steve. Looking foward to it!
Really looking forward to this!
I watch many of your videos and I enjoyed every minute of this one. Well done Steve! I specifically like when you landed at my local airport in Reykjavik at the very end of this video where I did my PPL lessons
Watching on my big screen - the editing on your videos is tight. That really makes this interesting and enjoyable.
Mate that was awesome. Excited for the next episode!
The green flight academy that will start here in our city just got their brand new pa28 today. That one had been ferried from America. It’s amazing when you think about it, looking forward to this series!
Awesome! I’ll have to come up and have a look at it. 👍🏻
@@MentourPilot That would be a lot of fun, so much interesting aviation things will happen here this year! You would be very welcomed.
what a gorgeous aircraft the DA62 is.
I've been looking forward to this video. I'm jealous you are flying my dream plane!!
watched the other crossing the pond video they did - love those guys - that must have been a great trip !
Ah, Vienna! Built to be the capital of an empire - now the capital of a middle sized Central European country. It really is quite an experience. Also, Diamond airplanes are cool. Expect when they're not. I'm a member in a club that has a DV20 that mostly works and a DA40 that mostly doesn't; lastly, a piston blew through its cylinder and the crew had to land on a field. Luckily, and thanks to the skill of the pilot, nobody was hurt and the airframe didn't sustain any damage, so a new engine it is (again), and maybe next summer she'll fly again :-P
So cool you were here in Austria. I learned to fly "next door" at LOAV, Vöslau right next to LOAN, Wiener Neustadt Ost, Diamonds headquarters and I just went hiking the other day right next to the old train bridge Micke showed you. Hope you had a good time in Austria! All the best from Vienna! Glück ab, gut land! (That's the Austrian way of saying "always the greens!")
Yeeess!! I am so hyped for the Series!
Of course he’s happy and enthusiastic, he has landed an amazing job!😄
😁😁😁
what an amazing adventure!
Been waiting for this since i saw the crossing on micke's insta.
Man, that is one NICE aircraft! Immediately fell in love, lol. Those engines are a work of art! Looks fast, too. Austria is GORGEOUS, too! Thanks for sharing that! You're a lucky man, Steve! Can't wait to see the cross country part. Hope you and the family had a great Christmas and a Happy New Year! 👍😎
Appreciated!
Excellent content as always, Steve! Thanks for letting us follow along.
Thanks for following along Zachary!
The DA42 is similar in the flare it is very speed stable which allows for a longer flare without loosing lift! I have done about 50 landings in it.
I must say that I have never not greased the plane its just to easy to fly! Even in gusty crosswinds! Beautiful machine! I love that you enjoy the da62!
Yeah - it’s amazing how easy they are to fly.
I can only do this in flight sim these days...... but I do love the DA62.
Looking at the route map you showed on the G1000, you flew literally right over my house! I live just off the HAM VOR. Amazing to think about it
It was bitter sweet to be blasting over such awesome geography and not being able to visit any of it.
Great watching you fly the DA-62 out of CYXU....my home airport.
You're lucky to have that as your home base!
Just a minute in, but I'm already intrigued on learning more so I can be a nerd on this plane in FS 2020.
He is soooooo fast using the garmin panel whahhhhhh
Cool flight in a cool plane! Loved every minute!
One of the coolest vids youve had too date. Love the plane and the mission you undertook. Thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it
I got to tour the London production line several years ago when I worked for one of their suppliers. The D-Jet prototype was parked inside still. Awesome experience.
So much information...I’ll have to watch several more times...
Been watching your channel for a long while now-your storytelling and editing were just top notch. So excited for the rest of this series!
Thanks so much!! This sort of feedback is greatly appreciated as I do put a lot of energy into the post production end of things.
That was lovely.
Thanks Charles
Fantastic video and adventure for you Steve! Cheers from CYYB
What an awesome adventure!
Looking forward to the rest of the films with your production and narration quality!
Wow, incredible story!
Wonderfull! Great d performance and an amazing team.
Got my PPL in the DA40 can’t wait to get a chance to fly the DA42 and hopefully one day a 62. Awesome video once again!
Wow... what an episode. The fact that it only covers pre-training, factory tour, Vienna and Austrian check out really illustrates the immensity of the experience. I bet you're glad you have as much footage as you do; I'm sure so many aspects of the experience literally and figuratively flew by. You have a rich treasure chest of archives with which to relive it all. I've never seen Vienna, but I have looked down on Salzburg from the Alps above Berchdesgaden, Germany; I'd love to see more. And the DA62; what an incredible aircraft... especially those engines! This is the first time in my life I find myself lusting to own a twin engine aircraft. So glad this trip is being presented sequentially; can't wait for the next episodes. As for my airplane, pretty much ready for first engine start, but don't want to do it until the intersection fairings are complete. It's really hard to work in an unheated hangar in Michigan right now; slowing me down a bit... but I keep inching closer.
Hey @goatflieg I've been watching your build on mykitlog and wondering when you'll do your first run! You're almost 4000 hours into your build and haven't turned the engine over yet! I thought maybe you were waiting for a refresher with Bruce Bohannon.
Keep up the good work! That air intake is a thing of beauty, but I don't think I'd have the patience for it.
@@Redchrome1 There are a lot of reasons for the high hour count, mainly due to being a first time builder. I want to make sure the first engine run is close to the airworthiness inspection and first flight. It's ready but I don't want to run it, then let it sit for months again. The Bruce Bohannon refresher will come immediately after first flight (with qualified test pilot) and then I'll take over Phase 1 flying.
Thank you Steve, BOSE Aviation, and all the other sponsors. Happy new year to you all.
You lucky bugger!!! (Australian slang 🥴😆😬). What a great adventure. A Diamond DA62 or DA50 RG would be my lottery winning first buy 😁😆👍.
Agreed
Superb video Steve! Great stuff!
Glad you enjoyed it
I love this plane.. It's a masterpiece of beauty and engineering.
Yep, pretty exciting!
I learned in the originals. DV-20, DA-20, & HK-36 with about 130 hours in them combined. I really like Diamond Aircraft both as a pilot and mechanic and cant wait to get my medical back and fly the new diesel aircraft. Thank you for this. I am officially jealous. Be safe.
This is epic Steve - can't wait for part 2. :)
Working on it now :)
I always wanted to, but I may never be a pilot, however I feel like one watchings these videos. So great they way you do these. (Maybe someday, never say never, but crazy sleep disorders and flying aircraft don’t mix well for now 😆)
You can do it!💪🏼☺️
Wow. So excited for this series. Congratulations on your flight Steve.
Just sent out the rough cut of episode 2 for sign off :)
flying my dream plane the 62! looking forward to the series!
Thanks Steve! I'm definitely looking forward to this series. IF I was current, IF I had the money, a DA42 VI is the airplane that I would like to own. I'm single, so don't need a whole bunch of seats on a regular basis, the fuel economy is fantastic, it's always nice to be able to buy Jet A for less than 100LL, and I think it's just an amazing airplane. The DA62 has that EFIS backup, but I really would love to see if the -42 would get the Garmin GI-275s as back ups, to replace the three analog gauges up at the top. An ADI, HSI and MFD would be great for back up.
I'm looking forward to watching the rest of this, and seeing the long, overwater flight portions and how it's done.
I have the Aerobask DA62 for Xplane and the modified default DA62 for Microsoft Flight Sim....this is one of my favourite planes to fly! Just like the real thing, it was super easy to fly and land! I was last in Vienna in 2000, and still has the best ice cream I have ever had!
Very cool and very cool sight seeing tour guided in Vienna!
Fantastic video
That wrap-around cockpit window is a weakness of mine.
I absolutely *love* that feature, asthetic-wise!
Can't begin to imagine how pricey it is for a replacement, though
Can’t wait for the rest of this one
Me too - I guess I better get back to editing :). I feel a bit like I am hanging off the front of a train building the tracks - such a massive edit here, I haven’t been able to get much of it done in advance.
Great video and very cool aircraft!
Best video yet...
