  • Part 2 - First leg of the North Atlantic crossing in the DA62 Flying over Europe.
The biggest #generalaviation flight I’ve ever flown! Austria to Canada.
    Proudly associated with ForeFlight: www.foreflight.com/flightchops
In this multi-part series, the largest general aviation project in FlightChops history, ride along with us as we team up with the Diamond Aircraft ferry crew and act as pilot flying on delivery of a new DA-62 light twin aircraft from Vienna, Austria to Diamond Aircraft’s Canadian base in London, Ontario Canada.
View part one of this series:
    • Atlantic Crossing Flig...
In this second episode of the series we begin the first leg in the DA62 with Micke following behind in the DA42, flying across Northern Europe to stop for fuel in Denmark, and to don our survival suits before departing across the North Sea to Wick, Scotland. This flight leg had some good IMC as we expected, and presented several great opportunities to practice my #IFR flying while learning some of the differences between European and North American ATC. Upon arrival in Scotland, we prepare for a long flight across the North Atlantic to Reykjavik, Iceland. ForeFlight was along for the entire journey providing all our charts and flight planning tools. Their international capabilities are a must have for any pilot, let alone those flying through six countries in one day.
During my DA62 Familiarisation flight at Diamond Aircraft’s base in London, Ontario prior to departing for Austria, I tested the Bose ProFlight in-ear headset; I already knew it was comfortable, but I wanted to see how the active noise canceling held up, and it was impressive - I am not surprised it is what Micke wears exclusively when flying Diamond Twins (which are admittedly quieter than most regular piston powered aircraft).
As the journey unfolds, we will continue to release more awesome extended/raw exclusive footage to Patrons.
Keep an eye out as we release each #oceancrossing episode back to back over the coming weeks!

    FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

First setting eyes on them (the 42/62) was half-expecting them to be pressurised (wouldn't be surprised to find Diamond are working on it). Thanks for the content, absolutely engrossing.

Very cool! What type are you getting? And that flight won't be too pedestrian, especially not in winter.

You don't have to be a pilot or fly an airplane to love aviation. The nice thing about Steve's channel is yes, it's geared towards pilots, but it also attracts a lot of non-pilots as well, and there is a great learning opportunity here. Even if you ended up flying nothing more than Flight Simulator (and a lot of guys who follow this channel fly only Flight Simulator), you will learn a lot and learn about flying.

@@Orzorn If you have the pockets to afford it, it's a great thing. I couldn't afford to fly any more, for a number of reasons, but I'll tell you what, I wish I could just because it's that good!

Even though the closest I've been to a Diamond DA-62 is in MSFS, they definitely are one of my favourite GA aircraft. Great styling, modern interior, panoramic canopy ... $1.08-1.24 million US doesn't seem like a bad price either.

Great video, Steve. Awesome trip. IF I had the money, IF I had my medical back, IF I had my multi- and instrument ratings, I DA42 would be sitting waiting for me.
Okay, I have a totally unrelated question for you. When I started out with a camera, my first camera as a Minolta SRT-101. From there, I upgraded to a Maxxum 7000, and from there to a Maxxum 7D. Twice, I had one stolen. From there, I went to a Sony A58 and A77. So, as you can see, I'm an A-mount kind of guy. Sony, of course, no longer makes an A mount, they have gone totally to E-mount and mirrorless cameras. Wave of the future.
So, a friend of mine has a Nikon B500 point and shoot. She took a photography class, but her camera didn't have a PASM mode, and she wanted to expand. SHe's asked for some help, so I'm helping her put all her learning into real world use with a new camera. Being a Sony kind of guy, I thought the HSC-400X would be a great camera for her, but they've stopped making it, and it didn't have RAW, so I was looking for a camera with a large aperture lens and RAW capability. I found the Lumix DSC FZ300. It has the same physical sized sensor as the Nikon Coolpix, but 12MP versus 16, but it shoots in RAW and has a constant f/2.8 lens from 4 to 108mm actual (25-600 equivalent).
I've said all of that because I've noticed you shoot with Lumix cameras, and I'd like to know which model cameras from Lumix you shoot with. What other camera would you consider shooting with as a professional videographer? How did you get started using Lumix cameras? I mean, they aren't 'household names' when it comes to cameras, at least to most anyone with a photographic history.
I'm looking forward to the rest of this series. I love the cuts between two different airplanes and two different environments. It really works well. This is good stuff!

Hey sorry for the delay replying - camera wise, I'm still shooting on a Lumix G85 that has to be pushing 5 years old now. It's still a great little camera and shoots 4k, but I am sure there are better options now, I just haven't been putting the energy into learning what is new - please let me know what you find out.
