Meh, S&W's pisspoor attempt at a 10mm is the main thing that turned the FBI off of the caliber and rendered us 10mmophiles loony outliers in the gun community. Their continued reluctance to issue the M&P in the caliber makes me think they just want to stay with their .40 substitute caliber to the bitter end. I'm not too keen on S&W, as a result. There are plenty of enthusiastic 10mm gunmakers. No need to push S&W into something they already had a shot at and failed.

@@texasbeast239 the Sig P220 is close to it, but it might have been nice to see what they would come out with. More 10mm pistols is always better.

      @Icarryone  2 года назад +5

The issue with the 10mm that arose within the FBI had little to do with the performance of their S&W pistols. A number of agents found the snappy recoil of full power 10mm rounds to be a bit unpleasant. Eventually, this would lead to their adoption of the less potent .40 S&W round.

They can bring them back but they won't sell as many. Plastic is cheaper and that's what they sell. You want a real gun buy a Korth they don't use plastic yet !

Smith and Wesson should bring the model 659 back in it's Classic Line like they have done with their revolver line. A brushed aluminum frame ought to lighten the weight and be a welcome upgrade.

As much as I wish they would also, I know they won’t. Steel is expensive and they are making tons of money off polymer frame handguns, which are way cheaper and easier to mass produce. Even they brought back a limited run of these, I would be first in line. These firearms just feel more durable and remind of times when people didn’t cry about the extra ounces when carrying. Now everyone is soft and act like their body is going to give out if they have to carry a steel pistol all day.

I'd like to add that I believe the ability to easily get into single action mode, without firing, simply by means of cocking the hammer, is an asset not fully appreciated by most shooters. In law enforcement, we are often trained to address either the long shot or the very precise shot placement during, for example, a hostage situation. Each of these scenarios requires single action precision shooting which striker fired pistols struggle to accomplish. Furthermore, the ability to de-cock the pistol and restore its safer double action mode is something else which striker fired pistols cannot accomplish. In other words, the DA/SA pistol is more versatile and more safe than striker fired pistols. Furthermore, my Smith 40S&W caliber pistol will outlive me and my grandchildren too! I'm not so sure polymer pistols will be so durable.

My first semi-auto was a S&W SW40F. When I bought it in the mid-1990s, right when they came out, it was the new thing. I was a S&W fan. My first handgun was a S&W 629 Classic with which I have taken a lot of deer. My father was also from the Springfield, MA area. So, I wanted a S&W. The thing about the SW40F was that it was the new thing in the new caliber. Remember the craze for the .40 S&W cartridge at the time? I really liked the metal frame S&W semi-autos, but the SW40F was about half the price. Another consideration. Frankly, it has worked out fine for me, although I now have lots of other handguns.
I have been seeing lots of 59 series and even 69 series S&Ws on sites like Aim Surplus lately. I am really considering it.

My go to pistols: Bersa.380ACP, Beretta 92LTT 9mm, SW 4013TSW .40S&W are all DA/SA. I like this type of action and practicing with one is good for the others. Though my SW4013 is SS Slide/BBL and alloy frame, I have put thousands of .40SW through it. Same goes for the other two. All are my carry choices, and the Beretta is my sporting steel choice as well. These are awesome guns, and I believe they are superior to the "Plastak" version. Thanks for sharing.

A friend one mine called me one day. A neighbor had died and his wife wanted to get rid of her husband's handguns. She didn't want any money, she said, just get them out of my sight! So I picked up three handguns and two rifles, which I sold, one for about a grand and the other for $760. The handguns were a S&W 36, a S&W 6906 9mm and a brand new Browning Hi-Power. I still have all three and none of them looked like they've been fired. Both autos came with extra magazines and this before they started making 10-shot mags, the sale of hi-cap mags are now banned in my state. Talk about the blessings of heaven falling from above!
I love S&W autos, and now have, besides the 6906, two 659s which I only fired one once, a 5906, 3906 and 645, the last I got from my dad. When I die, I'm going to leave them to people I like. The Smiths are great guns and were they to make 659s and 5906s today, the prices would top a grand. The price of steel and workmanship today are such that most companies are just making plastic guns.
I've never liked the Colt .45 autos much and think the 659 are far better designed. I've seen the Colt .45s jam on occasion, but I've just never seen a Beretta 92, or S&W 659/5906 jam. In the first military tests years ago, the Beretta (which I also have) jammed on an average of once every 2,000 rounds, and the 459 jammed on an average of once every 952 rounds, and these when dirty and subjected to harsh environs. The Colt GI issue, which nitwits like Jeff Cooper wanted to keep in the military, jammed so often they couldn't keep records on! There Beretta suffered from slide failures due to metallurgical problems. And Taurus, which made Beretta clones, actually had better metallurgy in its slides than the damn Beretta!
People who own these S&W autos (and non-military Berettas) should treasure these older guns. Especially the 659. I like it better than the 5906, in fact.

One thing i thought you would surely bring out in the video is the recessed slide stop pin cut on the right side of the firearm. Small details like this that S&W paid attention to makes this rank up there on the tail end of my list of all metal wonder 9's, included in that list of course is the CZ-75B, Browning Hi-Power, Ruger's P Series & Walther P-38. I appreciate their contribution to the gun world!
Sidenote: I'm interested in your opinion of the new XDM10 ELITE COMPACT just released. Got it last Saturday, installed dragonfly red dot this Friday, and absolutely love it as a compact 10mm!!! I have other 10mm's but this is pure AWESOME power in a compact format.

Thank you so much for answering my doubt. I wanted to know your valuable opinion because I'm after a 659 very soon

How much would it cost S&W to produce the 659 today? I see 1911s selling for more than a grand. Clearly, the 659 would not command that today; however, producing one might be an otherwise different proposition. I simply hate striker-fired pistols. I'm leery of using a plastic automatic that has the same basic design that my Raven .25ACP and Jennings J-22. Yes, they go bang every time I use them, but I just like my guns to have hammers.
The 659 has all the bells and whistles, but if you have one that's never been fired (like one I have), it is quite clunky. Shoot it fifty to 100 times and it starts settling in, and some recommend 200 rounds. My other S&W autos are nice and smooth. I suspect it would be prohibitively expensive even if (or especially) if sold in large quantities today. It has all the features a double-action Colt .45 would have.

Yes, handguns like this are somewhat expensive to make. Not as profitable to manufacture when compared to polymer guns - so no, you won't ever see these being made again. 😢

While I'm not a fan of stainless steel guns (it's a personal thing, just don't like the look) I will mirror your statement regarding all metal frames. Nothing feels as good in my have as a CZ 75 does, I don't care what it's up against.

I had a progenitor of the 659, a 459. Anodized aluminum frame and blue steel slide. I blame myself and buying cheap ammo for its poor accuracy. I was happy to be rid of the 9mm and get .45 ACP in a 1911 design. I also went for a Smith in .45, the next generation, 4506 DA/SA. It's with me six days a week. I wouldn't call it a tack driver, but I do much better with it than I could with the 459.

I wish I had never sold my 645. But the Ruger P-90? Good riddance.

I carried a Smith and Wesson model 5906 (DAO as per the NYPD)
My Lord, I HATED that freaking handgun. Way to heavy and nothing special about it.
It was not more accurate than my Hi-Power, Sig 226, Colt Government and Commander.
I did change over to a Glock 19 (and I am not a fan !!) after a short time.
**** I am not saying that it's not a robust firearm or it was lacking in quality. WHAT I'm saying is that it's needlessly heavy for a duty weapon. The 9mm does not have appreciable recoil, so the weight factor is not appropriated. ** The Smith M&P is BETTER than the 59 series and much more comfortable than the Glock.
    Just my opinion

Taking all into consideration, the firearms market has indeed changed quite a bit since these handguns were first introduced - several decades ago.

@@Icarryone - Yes sir, it certainly has. My first job, at 16, was in John Jovino's (go and look that up). I've been involved with firearms realistically, all my life. Like you, Glocks (though wonderfully reliable) deserve the moniker of "combat tupperware". Being objective, the Smith 59 series has lousy ergonomics. The 39/52 series feels phenomenal.
I've done my time in uniform. I'm no longer running towards gunfire. Now, I've reverted back to a 1911(Sig model RCS). I now live off a dirt road, comfortably away from a big city.
