Just found this because of a dripping Taco. I've enjoyed all of your videos and put in my own nat. gas boiler back in April, all solder joints. I had to smile at your "Propress Queen" comment. I don't like them. Contractors do because they're fast but I believe they set up multiple stress points around the pipe. Time will tell. Your solder joints, and mine, are works of art !
Learned so much from your channel Steve. As a new homeowner with zero knowledge of oil fired systems I have managed to do a shitload of repairs over the years. Happy holidays to you and miss Molly!
Steve my husband does mostly commercial hvac. Some residential. Small company since economy busted in 2008. I’m wowed you get so many videos out. You’re an animal. My husband and I have been binge watching your videos. Telling everyone about you and we have a lot of your sayings memorized. Lol
Steve I learn a lot from you but 1. Propress isn’t just rubber it’s a special material. 2, zone heads, circ pumps, flow checks, air eliminators, expansion tanks, draw offs, gate valves and ball valves all actual rubber. Lower quality than press fittings. You gonna say not to use any of that too? Might as well just run ductwork at that point
I pop the o rings out of the propress fittings and solder them in place with 50/50 then press them. Then I wrap it with sharkbite underground wrapping.
Hey Steve Im sure you know this already. But they do make zone valves and so on that can be used with Glycol.. Here in the great MN most systems have Glycol in them.
most valves and accessories for heating have a 50% or less limit to Glycol, people need to confirm the % before saying something will or won't work. confirm that first then you can make an educated decision on what to use.
We started using the shark bites thing cause my boss. But I refuse it on commercial. Some of those shark bites have been in 5 years. But I’m with you on longevity
He has done this :) If your a homeowner and the hvac tech says I ha e to shut this down, it's not repairable and it can kill you and if the homeowner gets mad at hvac tech then they are wrong.
Wow that's crazy how much that glycol destroys everything. I know on heavy equipment and diesel engines they recommend you change the antifreeze after a certain amount of time because similar things happen is it like that with boilers too?
Is it just automotive antifreeze? If so he should use dexcool, GMs orange color antifreeze. I have used it in my Chevy and have 265,000 miles and most of the original hoses. If serviced every 100,000 miles like recommended it's great stuff at keeping your system sealed and clean. I never had a hose fail just a few that got soft because of an oil leak. The was oil degraded the hose from the outside.
@@ohioplayer-bl9em The problem is not necessarily the quality or brand of the antifreeze it's electrolysis from the circulation of contaminated coolant around the liners
@dos gos It’s a temp and pressure (T&P) relief valve for a hot water tank so it must be directly threaded into the port on the side of the tank. There is a temperature probe coming out of the bottom of the valve that must be all the way in to the hot water tank to monitor the temperature, can’t use pipe extensions or nipples to connect it.
@@mjg263 ah! Thank you as I didn't know anything about the temp measurement probe of that valve. Let's still appreciate that Steve took the time to put me in line.
hey Steve are the valves have seals in them like O rings or are they a interference fit your a damn good pipe sweater keep the videos coming I'm new at this field but a old goat doing out of boredom thanks for all the info you supply of the trade.
press fittings save thousands of dollars every year on fire insurance claims, allow new tradespeople to be more productive sooner, soldering is a skill that should definitely be learned, but to say press fittings are no good means you should also say soldering is no good . it all starts with the trade person doing the work .
Hi Steve, great video as always! I really appreciate the tip about glycol and pro press fittings! I am able to solder, but the company I work for is mostly geared toward pro press. Just curious, why the grinder rather than a sawzall?
SAWZALL WILL LEAVE SMALL CHIPS THAT WILL GET INTO PIPE AND RECK ANY WASHERS IN WATER SYSTEM NEVER ..... NEVER USE A SAWZALL ON WATER PIPE ... IF YOU HAVE HALF A BRAIN ...
Have glycol in my viega progressed system now for 5 years...no green and its all propress. I didn't see any propress fittings in this video...but, nice try. That being said I maintain my system properly per my furnace guys recommendation. Glycol will eat any system if you don't maintain it properly. I only add glycol if I leave for the winter and have it flushed when I return. I have been doing it this way for 18 years even with old furnace and soldered fittings. Best heating system to avoid all this is hot air:) When I bought my 54 yesr old home 16 years ago the pipes were already turning green at some fittings. That is why I listen to my hvac guy....have you ever smelled sour glycol?
if you run the proper blades you will have no issues . 30 years never had one come apart = buy good quality real steel cut off blades and stop being so cheap . and there safe ..
If this is not allowed I am very sorry. Please help!!!! I am a maintenance technician in a Multi family community. I have I split unit A/c outside heat inside runs off water. Inside blower fan will not turn on when in heat mode. in order changed relay, thermostat, blower motor, today changed the transformer. went and looked at another one all is wired correctly. What now??? Ps New capacitor came with new blower motor. Ty if anyone as the time to help.
You are the last of your kind Steven. Sooner or later solder joints are done...going the way if dinasors. Taken out by propress or PEX tubing....cheaper and healthier. If your anti propress then at least get into PEX lol.

Hey Steve and Miss Molly! Workin’ again y’all. 👍👍
Lovely smooth cut you get with a grinder 😬
Steve! You are going to give all of the Pro press queens anxiety attacks! LOL!
Any videos of long-term glycol in pex?
30% glycol 70 % water is of if you have pex .....any more will eat the pex tubing .

Nice to see some expansion Pex in one of your videos! What are your thoughts on expansion Pex? I rarely ever see it in your videos.
Glycol also will eat away at solder joints steve
Steve what is the cut wheel brand you use?? I remember you saying awhile back but cannot remember

Steve I’ve never seen you do it in a video but can you “Red Tag” a system and shut it down? Do the home owners flip out on you?

Just curious, why do you apply your sodder on the same side as your heat?
Yep, glycol is certainly a double edged sword
Dosen't that heat damage the zone valve ?
no not at all you cane see i use a clamp to keep it open while soldering
Steve, like to see how you solder, always learning from you !
Iron pipe and copper? Electrolysis?
