The transmission fluid is black, not sure if it has ever been changed.
This car is fitted with an external transmission filter. Let's change this filter and dump out what is in the transmission pan.

That "not changing the transmission fluid" is the craziest thing I ever heard. When in doubt always change it. You can't hurt it by having fresh fluid. I would change it more often now that it has over 400,000 km. I have a Civic 08 with 141,000 mi on it and I keep up on the fluids like you wouldn't believe. Those people that abandon that car were fools. Never give up a Civic. Ever. Unless it's a 2012. That year was awful.

That is a service. Only 3 quarts but if you do it regularly it keeps it fresh. Got info from trans mechanic.

I've always heard conflicting things about changing ATF as well. In the end, I think it just boils down to personal preference. Nice job with the filter change Stephan. 🙂👍

YEAH THE MAIN AND ONLY MISTAKE THAT PEOPLE DO IS BUY CHEAP AND TRY TO SAVE ( $5 - $1O ) PER QUARTS. AND NOT GOO WITH " OEM HONDA FLUIDS " AND GET RANDOM AUTO PARTS TRANSMISSION FLUID THAT IS TOO THIN OR TOO THICK AND HONDA HAS VERY STRONG TRANS BUT IT DOESN'T TAKE MUCH TO MESS THEM UP THEY ARE DELICATE AT THE SAME TIME SAME YOOSELF THE TIME AND DOUBLE AND JUST ALWAYS GET " OEM FLUIDS FOR BOTH TRANSMISSIONS " YEAH THAT WAS A MUCH NEEDED WORK FOR THAT CAR GREAT JOB ON THE VIDEO

The right answer is that if the transmission was going to go, it was going to go. Putting new fluid in it is not what makes it blow up.

That filter ( strainer ) location & camera angles makes it look easier than it is, not well represented, it's a big pain in the ass to get it put back together

Nice job on the transmission. I too have heard multiple reasons why you should, or should not, service the transmission. Personally, I'd rather be safe than sorry and opt for changing all the fluid and the filter.
BTW, what's up with your C4? Still tucked away until Spring?

Hello my friend! Thanks for watching me tinker with my daughter's car. The C4 now lives in the same small garage where I did this service. I just pulled it outside for a couple of hours. Was a cold day but clear, no snow ❄️
