  • A decade after the Airbus A300 hit the skies for the first time, the A310 conducted its first flight. This widebody was smaller than its older sibling and was created to meet particular market demands at the time. However, despite the initial prospects, the aircraft’s production program ended within 17 years. Let’s take a look at the decline of the type.

    Correction @1:20: "shorter -200 and longer -300" should be "shorter-range -200 and longer range -300". Both variants are the same size. Also, @1:34 should be 255 orders and not 225.

    A couple of serious mistakes in this video:
    -the A310-200 and A310-300 are exactly the same size. The difference in in their maximum takeoff weight and range. The -300 also introduced the wingtip fences, AND was the first Airbus, and I believe the first passenger aircraft to be equipped with a tailfin made of composite materials: CFRP (carbon fibre reinforced plastic).
    -Airbus didn't build 225 A310 as claimed here, they built 255.

      I’ve not either but it’s in essence a baby A300 with a similar exit layout to what you’d find with 737-700 (4 standard sized doors and 2 smaller ones near the centre)

    • @bluebox2000

      There doesn't seem to be an explanation why this plane wasn't more successful.
      Right now, it's exactly what Boeing needs to fit between the 737 and the 787. It could maybe even replace the aging 737 covering most of the smaller aircraft segment. If only Boeing had bought Bombardier's CS100 (A220) they could cover the entire market. But Boeing has been ruined by bean counters.

      @@bluebox2000 the market for the A310 was pretty small, almost a niche at that point, add that to fact that it already had a competitor (767-200), it becomes clear why I didn't sell extremely well. It should be noted however that both the A310 and 767-200 sold in very similar amounts (the 767-200 sold 120 units, the 767-200ER sold 126 units totaling 246 units) meaning that both aircraft had each corner for themselves.

    I flew the old 310 from Munich to JFK on PanAm back in the day. Interesting situation, PanAm were basically broke and got very advantageous terms from Airbus. The old Munich airport was very close to the city and had a fairly short single runway. Most other long range aircraft weren‘t suitable and the 310 could just barely make it to New York. So for a while only PanAm, not even Lufthansa, could offer nonstop transatlantic services from Munich. The flight on the brand new plane was comfortable and pleasant enough.

    The A310 was an aircraft too ahead of its time in my opinion. When introduced, many airlines followed the hub and spoke model, and there weren't many direct routes available. Nowadays planes like the 787-8 perfectly fit many lower demand direct routes and are efficient in doing so. The A310 managed to keep the route Bucharest LROP - New York JFK profitable for a while. Real sad to see these planes go, I love them very much :(

    The A310 is such a cute little widebody. It would seem that Airbus could quickly modernize it and have it flying in a few years with minimal investment. I’ve always felt that this little hidden gem should’ve gotten more traction than it did, but the airline industry was in turmoil around the time of introduction and the uncertainty let most airlines to pass on the A310.

    When I flew transatlantic with Air Transat, the plane used would always have been an A310 or an A330, 2019 was the last year I flew the route on an A310 and A330, after that in 2020 both directions of the trip I took the A321LR. I am going to miss taking the A310 with Air Transat. Although they didn't update the cabin, I liked that. It would remind me of a different era of flying.

    Why does this channel always use the title "The Fall of"? For example the recent videos on the 757/767. They were both incredibly successful aircraft even to this day that are now being replaced by newer generation aircraft.
    In this case the A310 was always a niche aircraft and never saw the popularity of other aircraft in this series. So did the A310 really have "The Fall of"? All that can be said for the A310 is it like the A300 both were the beginning of what has become a very successful line of aircraft from Airbus.

      @henrykaung9064 2 года назад

      But they're falling from the radar! Airlines barely uses this plane nowadays and that's why it's called the fall of. The title didn't mean it wasn't successful. It was very successful but after time it will eventually go away because of age. Same applies to the 757 and 767!

    • @VisibilityFoggy
      @VisibilityFoggy 2 года назад

      Yeah, this is a good point. It bothered me on the 757 article. The B757 was probably the most highly-regarded plane of its generation for pilots to fly, it provided a powerful mid-market platform that could operate rapidly from either hubs or smaller airports and had a lot of utility. Many airlines wish they had a successor. Every airplane type ever made will have a production start date and production end date eventually. It doesn't mean it "fell" or failed.

    I've flown on the Air Transat A310s back in 2017. For an old bird the cabin was spacious and comfortable. I have the flight experience video on my page

    I flew it on Pakistan International Airlines from Karachi to Kuwait and I liked it. It was spacious. But maybe because the plane was only about 65% full. If this plane is renewed it would need newer engines & sharklets. But I think the Airbus 321neo has more or less replaced it.

    So an updated a310 would in effect be a a330~100 or an a330~700 neo.
    The 800 isn't selling so well so I can't imagine a shortened 700 variant doing any better.

    I flew on the A300/310 aircraft with Eastern and didn't like it as much as the L-1011. Like many European aircraft, it felt cramped and not because I'm one of those over-sized American countrymen. It does have beautiful lines, however. We (KMSN) have a A310 which flies for FedEx Between Appleton and Louisville (I think). There's a photo on Flight Aware.

    What I like in both the A310 and B757 is that they were massively overpowered.

    The A310 was never used by any operator in Australasia/Oceania. However TAA (Trans Australia Airlines [Melbourne based]) were launch customers of the A300(B4) and used them on internal routes across the Australian continent.[-> Ansett Airlines of Australia added the B767 [Melbourne Based] until both airlines met their end at the hand of Sydney interests. However, Virgin Australia A330s are very popular on the main &/or longer haul routes & the B787 Dreamliner does the same on Low Cost Carrier JETSTAR (QF affiliated Melb Based).]

    Middle. Market widebody if with new RR 787 engines can make it good plane. Remember this plane had the advance wings thin and small that could lift and fly up to 41000 ft

    If it could be modernised it would be useful , especially with Cargo & more spacious cabin vs A320’s etc

    • @aarondynamics1311
      @aarondynamics1311 2 года назад

      That doesn't make sense for a few of reasons:
      1: It would compete with their own A321neo
      2: A shrink of the A330neo would work better because it is more modern (it has fly-by-wire and high commonality with other Airbus aircraft) and the A310 is in a similar situation as the Boeing 757 - it hasn't been produced for a very long time and so restarting production would be very costly
      3: It would burn much more fuel per seat than the A321neo and 737 MAX 10 as it is a widebody, making it heavier and less aerodynamically efficient

  • @1950dcs
    @1950dcs 2 года назад

    My strongest recollection of the A310 is the way the central overhead lockers swayed from side to side during take off and landing. Decent enough aircraft, but an update wouldn’t approach the economics of the A321neo.
