RIP precious Angel . I love her version of this song it is more heartfelt especially because she was pouring out her feeling toward her abusive mom after she passed away in a car accident when Sinéad was a young. What sucks is that her dad turned out to also abuse her . This is why she was a strong voice and went after Child Abusers😢🦋❤

Sinead O’Connor is Irish. She had a very tumultuous relationship with her mother, who was abusive. About five years before this song came out, her mother was killed in a car accident. I think when she starts singing about ‘the flowers that were planted in the backyard, mama all died when you went away’, was a very real reaction for her. That’s what makes this so beautiful. And yes, Prince wrote it and it’s a beautiful song but in my opinion, it belongs to Sinead.

Sinead has since passed away from this life - found unresponsive in her London home on the 26th of July - no cause of death given - her young son passed away not that long ago...!
Sinead recorded this a few weeks after her mother died in a car accident - her relationship with her mother was not good and they didn't have a chance to reconcile....! - She remembers her mother in the song when she refers to Mama's flowers in the backyard - and sheds tears just afterwards...!
Sinead was her own woman - wouldn't allow the industry to marhet her - when they wanted to sex up her image - she turned up at the next session with the skinhead and wearing combats....!
RIP SInead O'Connor - her Heart & Soul will live forever through her music and the lives she touched along the way...!

natural reaction, I like it... I thought this song was about a lover, but it turns out it's about a person who lost his mother... I like this song

It is about a lover. Prince wrote this, and then passed it on to Sinead. She had recently lost her mother, and used her grief over that memory to pour into this track. Heartbreaking.

Interesting... I was wondering why the song tears me up so much and I've heard it like 50+ times. I lost my mother when I was 7. Very insightful!

    Beautiful heartfelt song.
There's so many great songs from Sinead, maybe listen to 'Mandinka' or 'Jerusalem' to try a more up tempo song from her.

Prince wrote this song in 1984. Sinead O’Connor did this cover version in 1990. It went to no.1 in the UK charts and no.1 in 18 other countries. She tweaked the script slightly to make it a female version. The part she had tears in (All the flowers you planted, Mama, in the backyard) was thinking about her mum, who died in a car crash three weeks before. She had a very difficult life with her mum, and wanted to forgive her, but it was too late. All the other lyrics of this song (written by Prince) wasn’t about her life. She chose this song because she loved it herself. You pronounce her name “Shin-aid”

Prince wrote and recorded this song in 1984, but didn't release it. Instead, he gave it to The Family, a band that was signed to his Paisley Park record label. They recorded the song in 1985, with their singer St. Paul (Paul Peterson) handling the vocals. According to Peterson, he was asked to sing it in the style of Prince. To get the right emotion, he thought about a girl named Julie who broke his heart in high school.

Her life is full of pain and sorrow starting with being raised by a mentally ill, abusive mother. There's a very good documentary on RUclips. So much pain comes out in this song that I think we can all identify if we are honest. I was watching you trying to fight back the sorrow. It's hard. I've probably watched her at least 50 times and still shed some tears.

Thanks Mrs Deo, great reaction, I personally prefer when the video is NOT paused, it's okay to speak over the song/dance while it's playing however I detest when it's paused, it ruins the flow, thank you again, love from Ireland

BUT YOU WAS ABUSED (I was too, as a boy!) AS I WAS, OK?

    I'll tell you some:
Sinead comes from IRELAND. A STRICTLY catholic church's invaded country. And in MY OPINION IS: she is singing about a sexual abuse, she was to be confrontated with. In this times young women or even CHILDREN WERE ABUSED BY CATHOLIC CHURCH GUYS - like the so called PRIEST is running throughout this video (WHY IS HE THERE) - and young girls aren't able to differentiate between abuse AND LOVE!
PRINCE, I think, wrote this song as a "go on/go off" Love Song - but Sinead raised it into her personal experiences - as like 100.000th of children had to suffer it!
Today there are always an unknown amount of children AWAY. Nobody knows where they are... respectively their dead bodies...
AND IN THIS WAY: You ONLY are able to thing this story BALD HEADED, aren't you?!"
