I think when she starts singing about ‘the flowers that were planted in the backyard, mama all died when you went away’, was a very real reaction for her. That’s what makes this so beautiful. And yes, Prince wrote it and it’s a beautiful song but in my opinion, it belongs to Sinead.

Sinead recorded this a few weeks after her mother died in a car accident - her relationship with her mother was not good and they didn't have a chance to reconcile....! - She remembers her mother in the song when she refers to Mama's flowers in the backyard - and sheds tears just afterwards...! Sinead was her own woman - wouldn't allow the industry to marhet her - when they wanted to sex up her image - she turned up at the next session with the skinhead and wearing combats....! Her life is full of pain and sorrow starting with being raised by a mentally ill, abusive mother. There's a very good documentary on RUclips. So much pain comes out in this song that I think we can all identify if we are honest. I was watching you trying to fight back the sorrow. It's hard.
