    As a 'navy dependent' I lived in Gitmo from early 1960 until Oct.1962..evac'd during the Cuban missile crisis.
    I loved living tgere...great adventure.
    Navy chaplain taught us how to pray.
    US Marines taught us how to cuss...and
    US Sailors taught us to gripe...and sneak a sip of beer.
    It was wonderful!

    What's the name of the song you're playing, to go along with this, please? Haven't heard this since I was a little kid {born in 1964}. Love it, becuz it brings back so many happy, cherished memories of family, which so many are gone now, sadly.

    Mid 80's I was a Navy Diver at Guantanamo Dive Locker (before the prison) for my one and only Navy enlistment (I know nothing about the real Navy). A buddy and I hiked and camped every square foot of that base, we were allowed (Windward and Leeward) and some places we were probably not allowed. Our attitude was, "forgiveness is easier than permission", so we went where we wanted to. We built a secret camp and spent more time there than the barracks. We had enduro motorcycles and rode the tank trails. We hunted (without a license), fished, spear fished, snorkeled and dove. We rented boats and explored every nook and cranny of the Bay, shoreline and GTMO river we could, without going into communist territory. I actually despise the Navy and glad I got out. Although, I sure did have fun in GTMO but only because we walked a fine line with breaking the rules. I don't think one could get away with what we did in GTMO since after the prison.

      I have two dogs buried there. Jake, 2017, and Wanderlei Silva, 2018. We brought Jake, who was a Lab/Border Collie, with us to GTMO and we adopted Wanderlei who was an Olde English Bulldog who had been there for quite a few years already when a Marine family couldn't take him to Europe because of the long flight. He quickly became family and I cried like a baby when he died.

    That former guard shack with the Northeast Gate sign on top of it: What's in there now? Is it just left empty? How do they maintain it, without being able to go fully around it on the outside (half of it is in communist Cuba)?

    • @TownTraveller
      @TownTraveller  4 года назад +1

      Yes its empty. There's a small gate right beside the shack so I think the marines incharge can go around incase they need to fix something.

    • @doorswhofan
      @doorswhofan 4 года назад

      @@TownTraveller Thank you. But are they allowed to do that? The front half of the shack juts into communist territory. I'd also think it poses a security risk: It's all just glass windows all around. Granted, it's watched 24/7 by Marine snipers, etc.

      @@TownTraveller That may be true now, but what about in years and decades past? Maybe at that time they still kept armed guards inside the shack, even after the gates were sealed?
