I lived at Guantanamo Bay from 12/29/87 until 3/24/92. Best place ever! My daughter was born there in 1989.

@@harrisn3693 Well, don't think so, pensions in Cuba are about 10$ and retired people looks in trash bins for food

I remember Carmen, who always joked with my mom every time we went in to the old Exchange by the Lyceum. I last was in Gtmo in 1981, when I went there in the USN for sea trials. I saw her again, and talked to her, asking if she remembered mom, but sadly she couldn't recollect her. My mom was a Cuban National, who was taken to the base by my dad (American), after Castro declared himself a communist. She last saw her family at the NE Gate in 1961, and that was the last time, sadly. Since then, all my Aunts/Uncles have passed on. Ironic that we lived in paradise while on Guantanamo Bay, but my relatives were living in hell, under a despotic regime on the mainland. Life on base was so good. Gas was 11 cents a gallon, movies & bus rides were free. The only expense we had was our family wants. Carmen, I wished I could still be there, and if I had a choice I would!

If you wonder why these people speak English, they kinda' had to no matter what age group. Everyone at that base is a military officer or enlistee and so learning the language is a must.

We were stagioned there 1973-1976. The Cubans who resided on the base were exceptional people, enjoyed their freedom, and loved us. Precious moments

It'd be awesome if you could somehow get a special civilian exemption and rent or buy a modest bungalow there, and visit at will. The Cuban terrain and climate, minus the communism, with always plenty to do. Life there would be so cool, I'm sure.
