From 2:25 - 4:00 it is not the Slav or Semi-Slav Defense. It is, simply, QG. And completely suboptimal verson of it for Black (since there is c6 played too soon, and Bd6 is misplaced).

The thing I'm noticing about Queen's games is the principle ideas are usually the same. I've been playing an indian defense that often transposes into a Queen's gambit that can end up a semi slav (which I've only just discovered) The same key ideas are in all of them
i was literally thinking the same thing watching this. it seemed kinda similar to the caro, which i feel is really similar to the queens gambit. i play the queens gambit all the time as white and just started playing the caro as black and feel like they compliment each other well since they're so similar. but now i was looking into the semi slav cuz i sometimes have a hard time against d4 openings
As a 300-600 player I almost exclusively see queens gambit/wayward queen. So, I'm going to try to slav/London to climb with familiar positions. Ty so much for this vid!
@@asmithakur03 My first tip is have a solid repetiore( openings) my way is to have one or two openings for white (recommend one) along with two or one defenses for both d4 and e4 (also learn c4 and Nf3 so you know what to do against those). My repertoire goes like this but yours can be different: WHITE: English Ruy Lopez BLACK: Sicilian (e4) French (e4 Grunfeld (d4) Benko Gambit (d4) Also my final tip would be to know your endgames levy has a video on those too (king pawn, rook pawn, queen pawn, bishop pawn which is a draw and maybe knight and pawn but that one is a little different)
@@rafewarren1034 I like your advice, I'm brand new to chess and fluctuating rapidly between 750-1000 back and forth, I'm now trying to learn the London for white although I'm not sure I'm keen on it so may change, and the Sicilian ( prefer dragon/accelerated/HAD) which I love thematically although it's very hit and miss for me atm, I do need to go and watch those endgame videos you've talked about so I know how to checkmate faster when it's down to 2 or 3 pieces and my time is low.

Then comes "under 1800 (I think you said) they are not used to bringing their queens out.." Reminds me of kindergarten. Kids naturally and happily draw outside the lines. Teachers nag them to stop doing that. Then as adults we torture them to get creative and think outside the box. Back to my coffee. Thank you for your videos... I agree with this sentiment same thing with mathematical teaching. Just drill drill drill, then the students can’t see big picture ideas and go right for solution manual to memorize the next chapter. Kids need to explore in an environment that doesn’t punish failure IMO. They should be encouraged to move their queen if they like it. And the teacher should show them why its “bad”. That being said everyone learns different but I quit music lessons because it sucks all the fun out of an enjoyable pastime. I guess it depends on the goals and the person haha.

The queen's gambit starts after an early c4 push by white and we want to play the slav defense with d5-c6. After that, it's up to you if you wanna get your queen's bishop out of the pawn chain, risking a queen attack against your b-pawn, or if you want to play the very solid but kind of cramped semi-slav with e6 on the 3rd or 4th move, fianchettoing your queen's bishop and quickly castling kingside.
@@ziwuri I was asking for an alternative since I didn't feel the Slav was my play-style. I was taking about: 1. d4 e6 2. c4 c5 because I liked the idea. Eventually, I ended up playing old Benoni against d4 after a little search, but currently I have months to play chess. In fact, I forgot about this comment too haha. Thanks for the reply anyway, I should get back to chess it seems. 🙂
He already made a video on the queens gambit which has the declined systems which are e6 but on move one it can transpose to the French. And c5 isn’t really a move you can go for until you’ve done Nf6 which gets you a Benoni hope this helped. (:

Nice compact video again, but ... I am a 1500 player, and I have to deal with White's Qb3 all the time. You don't need to be an advanced player to see that threat. I will need to practice my response with Black, otherwise the Slav Defense can't work for me.
I kept losing a knight to the bishop when white went in to the london system on move 2. Looked at analysis board and turns out compuder is okay with sacking that knight. It seems recommended course of action is to go in to the steinitz counter gambit with c5. So i guess more stuff to learn if you still want to reply to d4 with d5.

King's Indian is probably the best just because you can use it against basically anything (I'm a semi noob and it's what I use almost all the time) so you don't need to memorize multiple. Other options are the Karo Kann or Sicilian (dragon variation) but both of those only really work against e4, so if you run into a d4 opening (like the London, which is my favourite as white) then you'll need something else.
