Throttle Controller tested on our dyno! Do they give your rig more power down low & less turbo lag?

  • We back-to-back test a very common throttle controller available on the market today, fitted to a manual GU Patrol on our dyno to show you the results.
Do they make more power & torque? Do they give you more response down low? What do they actually do, or what do they don't do? How do they "work"?
Plus, see how we do achieve much less turbo lag for this Patrol without the need for a throttle controller!

I installed a cheap Chinese Throttle Controller cost at 37.00 US Dollar in my 2014 Ford Ranger XLT 2.2l Manual transmission 4x2 (asian version). Boy, I will never ride my ranger without a controller. Even though it does not added power in theory, in actual driving it actually does better because when climbing a steep hill slowly you won't get short and stall even if you are in 3rd gear or 2nd gear. Unlike if without a controller I have to put it on 1st gear because 2nd gear kinda starts to choke even if you floor the pedal the car won't respond and starts to stall already at 2nd gear.
The controller is like a magic kit, trust me. The name I bought is 9 Drive, 37 dollar.. yes it's a 37 bucks and it works great as any 250 dollar controller. it has Economy mode level 1-9, Normal Mode, P1-9, Sports Mode 1-9 levels, Race Mode with another 1 up to 9 levels..

These controllers allow the throttle body to open up 100% faster. If you don't alter your driving habits to accommodate for this then you will LOSE MPG. That's the point of the lag. The lag is intentionally programmed into these cars to allow the cars to meet fuel standards. This is the case for MOST parts people remove and replace. The OEM parts and programming are designed to balance performance and fuel standards. The throttle tables are no different.

The most common throttle controller (EVC) doesn’t claim to increase power (from what I know), their products do exactly as they are advertised. Although there may be ways to “replicate” what these do, for personal preference I would still purchase them rather than trying to alter my driving style which I would need to change every time there are different driving conditions e.g. towing, off-road etc, which I could just rather change with a few buttons using a controller. Again, this is personal preference and from the looks of these other comments, most people agree
Edit: I’ve seen a few comments from you simply saying it’s a multiplier. Once again, I don’t see a problem with this tbh, as these controllers still work exactly how people want them to (apart from the misinformation spread such as gains in power which clearly hasn’t been marketed). Unfortunately the replies from this channel to the viewers comments are showing a very established opinion with no optimism or allowing for constructive criticism

A throttle controller just improves the throttle response to how it is like for vehicles that use the accelerator cable system. If you are used to taking off from a standstill with a vehicle that has an accelerator cable system, you will know that some fly by wire systems really really suck when trying to take off without revving or when slowing down for just a little while and then trying to accelerate again on the same gear. Using the throttle controller eliminates this lag making the vehicle feel like it uses a traditional accelerator cable.
If you are looking for power and torque this is not for you. If you want a better throttle response then it is highly recommended

I think there are 2 points here. Your video addresses the no extra power, turbo lag, etc point but the other 1 is reaction time. Can reaction time be shown on a dyno?
What I mean is say 1 throttle had 1 min lag (extreme example) and another was instant, your dyno would still read the same and show the same graph wouldn't it?
Therefore we need a video to show the time between 100% throttle and the engine showing a reading for both with & without a throttle controller. This would show if they reduce lag.

But it also reduces pedal clarity it's like you lose pedal range.

@@louismccully5411 the PWR buttons are throttle controllers Louis. The point of this video is to PROVE that they do not provide actual gains in power or torque, or increase the engine's performance - they do not increase turbo boost down low to minimise turbo lag. All of that is done via custom dyno tune, not a throttle controller. A lot of people think that they do increase the performance but they don't. All they do is just recalibrate the throttle settings of the car - they trick the ECU into thinking that you have applied more throttle input than you actually have. The response provided by one can be perfectly replicated by pushing the accelerator pedal further, minus the almost imperceptible time it takes to move the pedal a bit more. Fitment of one will simply increase the voltage from the throttle input in the ECU. So, it will still have the maximum 4.5Volt input to the ECU, it's just that a throttle controller will tell the ECU "4.5Volts" at a smaller throttle input (less pressure on the accelerator pedal). In standard form, 100% throttle is 4.5volts, so quite simply having your foot at 100% throttle (foot to the floor) achieves the same output in both cases. Therefore, a throttle controller simply tricks your brain - you are only slightly pressing the throttle & the car is seemingly "going like the clappers", simply because the controller has increased the signal to the ECU - that's all that happens. By altering the relationship between your foot & your brain, you have a perceived gain, less lag etc, but it's really just the fact that the car is going better than expected because you have had to move your foot as much on the accelerator pedal. So, in other words - all you have to do is put your foot further down on the accelerator pedal for the same effect.

using these throttle controllers, the idea is that if you press the throttle to let's say 25% it won't make the ECU think that you have the applied 70% throttle, instead it should make the throttle open up to 25% like requested, but do it a lot quicker, eliminating the delay thus eliminating throttle lag.
This faster throttle valve actuation to the specified value cannot be achieved by just having a heavier foot like you suggest.
Also, this would invalidate your claim that these devices are simple signal multipliers.
How do they actually work? no idea, i would assume there is a throttle map in the ECU, which determines how fast the throttle opens, but these throttle controllers only modify the signals from the pedal and don't modify the throttle map. But a lot of people say the improvement in responsiveness is noticeable and worth it.
There is a nice demo on YT by sprint booster, which tries to visualise how it works, although it's not shown on a real car, so who knows if that's what's actually happening.
