After you finally acquired the item and solve the puzzle, come back to this town and the rest of it will be relatively straightforward
BTW, I love the wonder and excitement when new places and aspects of the game are seen for the first time, brings me back to playing it for the first time in the 80's and this version a year or two ago. HoverBat did a good job on this version.
remember the last cave you were in with the pillars before you did the great palace with the locked door? it was south of the town. go back there, solve the puzzle, get the item go back to monster town.
