- Be it through a lack of finance, teething problems or needing more development time, Formula 1 teams have often used development cars on an interim basis. In this video, 10 of F1’s most interesting interim cars are explored, with varying degrees of success between them.

Kimi Raikkonen put in the performance of the century in 2003.
He took a one-year old McLaren, due to the fact McLaren FAILED to launch their real 2003 car, to the final round of the WDC.
Kimi in 2003 > Alonso in 2012. Raikkonen was unbeatable on pure speed in the tyre war era.
Without the engine failure at Nurburgring, Kimi wins the 2003 WDC.
Dont forget hockenheim, barrichello hitting him after ralf pulled a sebastian on him (2018 Singapore). I always wondered. Were the 2003 cars that bad or were the updates that good that it helped that year old car be competitive?
@@CapnFran Look where Coulthard finished. That should tell you all you need to know. The 2003 McLaren was much slower than the Williams or Ferrari that year.
@@ciaronsmith4995 yeah but coulthard had issues qualifying with the new format too. Plus he did better than Raikkonen the year before in the same car. I mean he should've done a better job. The whole 2003 season was weird lol
@@CapnFran Wrong. Kimi was much quicker than Coulthard in 2002, it was just that Kimi's car had 12 DNFS!!! He only finished 6 races in 2002 but still outqualified prime DC a year after DC had demolished Hakkinen. I repeat. Nobody was quicker than Kimi in the tyre war era.
@@ciaronsmith4995 I forgot about those DNFs. Coulthard did demolish häkkinen but you could also tell he wasn't himself anymore after his son was born. Yeah I'd have to agree with you Raikkonen was definitely the fastest during that period.
Anyone remember Super Aguri having to debut in F1 with the 2002 Arrows Chassis fit for the 06 regulations?
Was expecting it in the top place tbh
BlablaPaige same. Especially with the lightning fast Yuji Ide behind the wheel.
I forget about the Super Best Friends.
Funny that. It meant that Torro Rosso was racing against cars of its previous team owner.
Tom Duff ? Toro Rosso was Minardi, not Arrows.
The FW12C pulled Williams out of a tight spot? OK, that solves it. Williams just needs to introduce the FW12D!
Guess someone needs to forward this to a certain office in Grove
That Solskjaer-Shearer comparison was like Grosjean and Maldonado going for a gap that no longer exists.
The Ferrari F2001 and F2002 were just incredible cars
Dont forget the F2004
And reliable drivers and strategists.
Oh how times have changed :(
Unlike the sf1000.
And then the FIA did everything to weaken Ferrari
Unlike theyre doing to Merc nowadays
The entire game of F1 2014 was an interim tbh.
**aarava noises**
Atleast is gud for modding
Please read this comment before commenting. This is a video on interim cars, not b/c/d spec cars that raced over many years. Interim meaning temporary cars while the successor was prepared/given final touches. So for example many people expecting to see the mp4/2, it isn’t here, it started 3 seasons which it was intended to finish which it did. However The fw14b started 92 with the intention of being replaced by the fw15 but since the car was so successful they finished it with the fw14b since it was a known quantity.
Ps the mp4/6b isn’t here cause it really didn’t achieve that much and simply isn’t interesting enough.
Clearly Williams just need to develop the FW42 rather than bothering with the FW43...That's what they did with the FW12 in '89, 30 years ago... Surely there must be a world beater in Grove somewhere that they can wheel out and modify? ;)
Claire, a short view back to the past. 30 years ago. . .
*fw42b* _comes to mind_
cos 30 years ago is so comparable to modern F1.... pfff
It's a joke. Don't take it so seriously... The only thing a reworked FW42 would do is probably save a bit of money for 2020.
:)
Imagine trying hard to make a good car and someone else just shows up with last years car and wins 5 races in a row
The difference a good technological car makes: it can make Patrese be faster than Senna.
Crazy when they had backup cars, like when someone would have a failure at the start of a formulation lap and run to the pits and get the spare car.
Honorable mentions
1.Ferrari use the F310 for two straight seasons with significant changes to the car
2.Super Aguri’s first ever F1 car was the 2002 Arrows’ chassis
3.Ferrari F2004 was modified and use in the first 2 races of the 2005 season
Chan Chan the Ferrari 310 isn’t an interim car.
MasterOfDickery they have an updated B version of the car which they used during the 1997 season..
Chan Chan that wasn’t interim, they went in to 1997 knowing they were using the 310b all season.
F310 and F310b were two completely different cars, with two different project numbers (647 and 648). A quick look at both of them will confirm this. The fact they used a "b" specification naming is probably due to the fact it was the second iteration of the 3-litre V10 engine, still a novelty at the time for Ferrari.
Gerardo B correct and definitely not an interim car.
They forgot to mention the 1991 Mclaren mp4/6B that was used for first two races in the 1992 season, until the mp4/7A was released at the Brazilian Grand Prix
Filip Ostojic is it really that interesting amongst hundreds of interim cars?
Hang on. Solskjaer and shearer where both excellent players!
He's on about their interim managerial reigns
Slipped that greta thunberg joke in there like a champ
Cringeworthy joke tbh.
@@GeriatricFan1963 cringeworthy face to be honest
Well, at least I don't try and hide it; I know I'm ugly and I'm comfortable with that. So your petty insults don't upset me.
NONCE
@@GeriatricFan1963 Cringeworthy paragraph...
Racing interim cars was common place in the 70sxand before. Teams would up grade tge cars from the year before for the first few races of the year which were usually overseas races. The teams wanted to have the reliability because it sas much more difficult to get spares to the races back then.
You missed the 1980 Ferrari 312 T-5 which was jyst a slighly modified 312 T-4 which had won the both championships the year berfore. It was a disaster and defending wold champion Jody Scheckter didn't even qualify for the Canadian GP. Ferrari went this route as they were concentrating on the 1981 126 C turdo for the next season.
Guys, you don't need to be deepthroating the microphone, it can pick up your voice even when you're a bit away from it. If you see a lot of straight line tops on your waveform, you're way too close/loud.
I didn't realize this until now but Toro Rosso sure had a thing for having drivers with variations on the name "Sebastian". Buemi joined the team the following year.
7:12 And then a not so brief low period from 2008 to who knows when.
Sorry the fw14 didn’t launch with active suspension only the b spec had it hence the bulges on the front suspension, nor the did the fw13 or the fw12(c) have it from silverstone 88 onwards.
Mansell said as good as the FW14B was it really was a confidence car. He had a lot more confidence in the car than Patrese it seems.
4:22 LMAO
LOL i missed that one
How is the Lotus 72 not top of this list?
Leyton House!😍
Really need to turn those mic levels down!
That minardi ps04b was basically an updated ps02 chassis from 2002.
Those late 90's cars look funny how the front suspension is mounted as low as possible for centre of gravity. And now they're trying to make it as high as possible.
Giving Williams some ideas
Imagine rocking up to the first race, feeling like you got a good, quick car and a shot at the win.... and then getting summarily SLAPPED by someone using last year's car.
1:53 AAÆAHro
I suppose the McLarens M23 and MP4/1 and MP4/2 don't count? M29 too , I think. Also, Lotus 49, 72 78, and 79, Brabham BT49, Williams FW07and FW11. Oh and Tyrrell P34 and Marussia did it recently. I'm pretty sure that most of the 2012 cars were 2011 cars with minor changes and new names, maybe same for 2013 ......actually, there is a lot more...this used to be normal practice.
crusherbmx some of these are and some of these aren’t. Interim cars not just b spec, so the mp4/2 and fw11 for example were never interim because they Intended to finish the seasons they started. Lotus 49 and fw07 would be because they started season while their successors were being prepared/finished.
More of these Top 10 videoooooss!
Mercedes should use the W10 next year as well. Shouldn't be too difficult
Racing Point are already doing that
Somehow the Scuderia Italia F3000 modification isn’t included.
Yes that Dallara 3087 I think it was named, was the ultimate interim car, and the worst as well :D but it marks the last appearance for the glorious Cosworth DFV 3.0 in a grand prix, when everybody else was running 3.5 liter engines, so it is even more remarkable. Shame it didn't make it to the video. :(
Add the 2020 Racing point in this list.
Regardless of the joke it isn’t a interim car.
7:24 Ferrari's cars were so quick they could dominate a race in last season's vehicle
LOL the disrespect towards ole😂😂
Can we go back to the car designs without extra fins and winglets, so smooth body with just spoilers providing 90% of the downforce? Such good looking cars.
Football analogy? Stan & Olie don't have a single managerial trophy between them
@Liam07 Winnie the Pooh disagrees, he can't even look at you...
Even comparing the two in a sentence is weird..
One is norman, the other brit.. one is tiny, the other a brute.. one is cute, the other an ogre.. one is a substitute, the other key-player.. only comparison.. they're both legends
2021: all cars interim
YOU MISS THE 1983 MCLAREN, turbo, it showed the team the teething areas creating the dominance of their 1984 car, it retired six times i e 3 more than the 1984 car all season.
The 1991 Williams FW14 didn't have active suspension! Get your facts straight
Um, what about the McLaren-TAG MP4/2? That car won three consecutive World Championships for two of its drivers (Lauda in '84, Prost in '85 and '86).
Joe Dionisio not a interim car, just a b and c spec that raced fully over 3 years.
Arhhh autosport what about the McLaren mp4/5b from 1990?? Won a title and no mention lol
Anthony Ackovski I think it’s a lose definition of what a interim car is, the mp4/5b was meant to and did race all season where as the fw14b was meant to be replaced by the original fw15 but since it was so successful, hence we only ever saw the fw15 in c spec.
Anyone know the make/model of hifi receiver Martin Brundle ans Michael Schumacher are holding in the Benetton picture?
Sanyo, probably
Judd??!
IMHO, the most beautiful F1 car ever is ,
1.Mclaren MP4/17
And ..
2. Ferrari 248 F1
3. Williams FW-16B
4. Mclaren MP4/8
5. Ferrari 641
6 Brabham BT 52
--------------------------
Todays F1 cars are just giants squids on the carts.
McLaren also ran the MP4/6B for the first couple of races of the '92 season prior to the MP4/7 being ready.
Where are the Autosport videos with interviews and analysis of the past F1 races??? Did you guys loose your budget?
They also has budget caps
@brownwings00 English is not my native language. How many languages do you speak fluently mr bigshot
The Mp4/5 and Mp4/5B or the Mp4/6 and Mp4/6B, perhaps?
Cbr 3 the mp4/5b wasn’t an interim car and the m4/6b just isn’t interesting enough I guess.
Eh, ok.
Cbr 3 do you get it?
Greta Jokes...
Thinks that the 14 and 14b are the same car...
MP4-2 and Lotus 72 seem to be ghosts...
Autosport is back!
Leo Arc mp4/2 was never a interim car.
Not watched all the vid. But technically the mclaren that started last season was technically a interim car.
Comparing Solskjær and Shearer, is a bigger botch, than Ferrari's last 5 seasons
Correction... last 10 seasons
Very good video, thank's ; & there is the french team Ligier - the JS39 (with the Renault V10 3.5L engine) : the same car in 1994, the cars in 1993 driving by Martin Brundle & Mark Blundell was driving in 1994 by Olivier Panis & Eric Bernard ; piece of information ; Cordiality.
That is not a interim car.
Can a parent company like redbull give there car from the previous year to there sister out fit torro rosso
yeah they did that
williams for the past 5 years be like:...
A Greta tunberg approved recycle 😂👍🏻 great comment ❤️
where MP4/5B
That was not an interim car. It was intended to race all season and did so.
Force India???? Did this serval times
Why is the narrator shouting into the microphone? Indoor voice please
I thought autosport was a serious company, not some kid studdering through the script not to mention the audio quality or lack thereof.
I expect better from my free entertainment while I take a shit.
